When times are tough, Russian president takes 800K rouble pay cut
— Purple Avenger

Obama and Congress take note -- THIS is what leading by example looks like.

/Instapundit mode

I thought about sidebar'ing this, but I didn't want it to just fly by unnoticed. This is precisely the sort of thing our overlords should be doing to demonstrate to the serfs that the "burden is being shared", but NOOOOO, our oblivion beltway royalty votes themselves pay raises and demands 7/24 access to Gulfstreams on our dime.

You know what? FTS. FTS Hard. We're starting to notice.

8 they've murdered the polish leadership

Do tell.

There's enough evidence of actual Russian perfidy not to go all Truther over an aircraft accident.

Fine, but keep in mind who you are celebrating here. Putin overthrew a government last week. Possibly made it so the polish leadership was killed in a plane crash. He's selling weapons to Iran, etc etc etc.

Let's not start sucking his charles johnson over what, really, is meaningless money in what is the most corrupt government on the planet.

Posted by: lorien1973 at April 13, 2010 12:01 PM (IhQuA)

11 FWIW, the Russian president is paid less than house members of our congress.

Posted by: dfbaskwill at April 13, 2010 12:02 PM (usjNq)

People in government don't get their money from salaries. They get it from bribes, fraud and graft, duh.

Posted by: DoDoGuRu at April 13, 2010 12:02 PM (31pnY)

14 Don't much care if the President or Congress cut's their salaries, but boy I'd love to see them have to give back a good percentage of all the kickbacks, bribes and under the table deals they are into.  Now that would be some real money there.

Russia is a very free country, as long as you are paying the 'krysha' and are not garnering an undue level of attention among the criminal elements or irritating the government, or members of the government (those two groups overlap considerable BTW). Unless they think you are making too much money, then you will simply be encouraged to leave and they will then take stewardship of your interests, but they will no-longer be your interests, so don't worry about it too much. Rarely will they kill you outright without some warnings first. They are very fair like that.

@27: "The gold standard for government screw ups is seppuku. Accept nothing less."

Actually, they were usually given the choice between seppuku or becoming a monk.  Besides, sippenhaft is the more effective option - knock off the screw up and all of his/her relatives.  Encouragez the ever-loving Hell out of les autres.

Yeah even if it was an empty gesture sometimes empty gestures can be meaningful.

Like if Pelosi would stop using the Air Force like her family's private taxi service for example.

Or if the dingbat in Chief and his fashion victim wife would stop having parties at the White House every single Wednesday night.

Nah, they know that Biden's "a little bit special."  They wanted to spare us the embarassment of our VP sitting on the dias with his speech pinned to his lapel, right next to his mittens.  State Department didn't want to stick the Poles with the tab for the pizza party after the speech (assuming Biden remembers to use his inside voice), either.

136 The transformation in the perception of Russian women is astonishing.  I remember when they were tractor drivers epitomized by the Wendy's commercial.  Evening wear!  Vyery nice.  I am told that they knew about the commercial and found it very offensive.  Probably helped end the cold war.  Now they are the stuff of loser fantasies.

Having lived for a short time in the Soviet Union - I can definitely state that their younger women were very attractive.  The ugly stick did appear to strike back with a vengeance around age 40 or so, though.  Apparently a hard life and physical beauty are not terribly compatible.
