When You're Begging for Military Sales from India...
— Geoff

...the Keynesians have already won (where by "won" I mean "kilt us"). India has less than 10% of the US GDP, and a defense budget of $32 billion (2009) compared to our budget of $685 billion. So who does the administration go to for an economic feather in their cap? You got it:

The United States has stepped up pressure on India to buy US military hardware worth up to 11 billion dollars, ahead of President Barack Obama's first state visit to the country, a report said Friday.

Washington's hopes of achieving a big commercial "deliverable" from Obama's visit next month are now pinned on a fighter jet deal, the Financial Times said, basing its report on unnamed sources.

Can't wait until we start hitting up Zimbabwe for sales, and with this level of economic leadership, I probably won't have to.

Their home-built MiG-29's and the pilots who fly them are scary good; ask the American F-15 jocks who exercised against them. How much of a hurry does the Great and Powerful Ob think India will be in to make him look good?

The Indians and Russians have been allies for a long time IIRC.  It was Bush who started to cement a US/Indian relationship.

That being said, India is a good counterweight to China, but I'd still tread lightly about this alliance.

11 7 Obama, the international arms dealer.

Ever see "Lord of War" with Nic Cage?  Terrible movie, but Nic made a statement that "the President runs more guns in a day than I do in a month".  This sentiment is typical left-wing moral relativist nonsense (America providing her allies with weapons for defense is not equivalent to gun runners arming 3rd World warlords just to enrich themselves), but Obama is certainly acting in the spirit of the statement.

13 The point is not the money. It's military alliance with India. Obama has done very very few things right, one of the worrisome ones being calling such an alliance with India into question. It is very fortunate that he didn't screw this one up too (yet).

Military alliance with India is a great justification, but as you can see from the desire for a "big commercial deliverable," it's not the only one. And I'm betting it's not the most important one to this administration.

Physically impossible.  Afghanistan is bordered by Pakistan and China, so either have to fly into Afghanistan or it's northern neighbors, or you have to move all those supplies and equipment by sea to Pakistani ports and then drive them overland to the border.

59 One look at CA and we can see the future:

Schwarzenegger also signed a package of bills that allows the state to implement and participate in the new federal healthcare reforms, including measures setting up a new market for Californians to get health insurance coverage.

A California Health Benefit Exchange will be created that will help individuals and small businesses shop for and buy affordable health insurance starting in 2014 as provided for by the new federal reforms.

With the exchange, Schwarzenegger said: "We will be able to create a competitive marketplace where consumers can choose among qualified health plans — all without relying on the state's general fund."

The exchange is expected to help bring down the price of coverage because it can act as a purchasing pool in getting the best deal from insurers, and it allows participants to qualify for federal subsidies, said Anthony Wright, executive director of Health Access California, a consumer advocacy group.

"Right now individuals and small businesses are all alone at the mercy of big insurance companies," Wright said. "This levels the playing field."

The bills were opposed by some health insurance firms and the California Chamber of Commerce. The chamber said the legislation "prematurely creates overly broad and expansive governance and guidelines without oversight for the state health benefit exchange, which could lead to unnecessary cost increases and limited choice for employers."

VDH:  The visionary dead-enders known as the statist democrats, try again.

"Whether hard communism or soft socialism, statism does not work. We all know why — it goes against human nature, rewarding mediocrity and punishing merit, professing egalitarianism for the masses, while the operators of the system, whether the old Soviet apparatchiks or the new crony EU Brussels bureaucrats, satisfy their appetites like capitalists. Ultimately, it is simply like coasting on a bike uphill. The last hard peddles are simply not enough to push the bike and rider over the hill: finally the brilliant small manufacturer, the lean contractor, the enterprising farmer, the late-into-the-night engineer — they cannot carry any longer the clerk, the auditor, the regulator, the tax man, and the bureaucrat who wish not merely to piggy-back onto the biker, but to try to stop his peddling even as they demand to get over the crest.

Yet we are finishing a second year of absorbing banks, insurance companies, auto manufacturers, and the health care system, borrowing trillions to redistribute in new entitlements, with more lust for equality of ends notions like cap and trade and immigration amnesty. Any House member who went along with all this and lives outside a blue-gerrymandered district or San Francisco or Chicago cannot run on the Obama agenda.

The entire statist protocol polls well below 50%. Past leftist candidates like Michael Dukakis, John Kerry, George McGovern, or Walter Mondale could not get elected on their visions; those who did (Carter and Clinton) either imploded after a single term or triangulated and so found a way to a two-term presidency despite never getting 50% of the popular vote.

Statism versus free markets is about as easy to understand as the difference between Singapore and Greece, and yet here we go again. This weird suicidal statist impulse seems for Obama to trump almost every other consideration: he may well destroy the Democratic Party for a decade just when it was recovering; he has so terrified private enterprise that trillions of dollars in capital are simply sitting out his first two years, waiting for the end of his congressional majorities, and hence his agenda to implode."

I can't figure out why this happens, why some wholly become American and others don't.  Why some leave the original little enclaves of their country and spread out and others don't.

Not much different than Fucks News spending plenty o' time on this today, always making sure they're "fair and balanced" by giving the attackers maximum air-play.

Conservatives are keeping this story alive in the mistaken belief that if they report it accurately, people will realize how stupid the "illegal-alien" attack on Whitman really is.

And the libs can report that "conservative" Michelle Malkin's little head is exploding with hatred for Whitman. When she isn't keeping the Colbert debacle alive by snarking about it.

Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies. At least the friggin' libs know how to bury a story when it's in their best interests to do so.

That's been an obsession with our military since the 1960s--the idea that you can save money making one aircraft with 3-4 variants.  The financial misadventures of planes like the Osprey, unfortunately, didn't disabuse the brass of that idea.

Shrum doing what he does best -- talking nonsense.

Let's pay attention to him. He's got a stellar  record.

Lol.. thanks for the link, I needed a good laugh this morning.  The guy's premise is that Democrats will hold on to the house and the Senate, and he sites as his evidence the fact that races are polling fairly close (at least thus far) in democratic strongholds like California and Washington State.  Amazing.

In any other year most republicans would be at least 10 points behind in races like this, if not a whole lot more.  And yet even in the biggest haven for left wing moonbat libertards Republican candidates with pretty much zero name recognition are running neck and neck with incumbent or extremely well known Democrats, and he thinks this is good news for the Democratic party?

Rotfl... this is why I simply could never be a liberal.  I lack the ability to to delude myself that much.

97 Just to show how we still haven't got anywhere with the media Faux just had Commie Chris Wallace on.

Be it known that (1) This is not an "anti-Democrat" election coming up. It is an anti-incumbent election and since there are more Dems it is hitting them worse. "The primaries showed that.

(2) He will have Rand Paul on Sun with his Dem opponent. He also want you to know that that race is a dead heat and too close to call.

The first lie is one of distortion, yes a few Republican incumbents were "primaried out". What he didn't bother to say is that they were ALL RINO liberals who liked to work with the Dems. So yes it is anti-Democrat. And that includes any Repubs who were helping them,

On the KY race I can't see how he expected to fool anyone. The last Ras poll had Rand Paul up by 11 points. There can be no argument made that it is too close to call.

Let's not forget that Chris Wallace is the asshole that dreamed up the "no fire in the belly" attack on teh Fred. That SOB is just as liberal as his daddy was and he hates a conservative.

106 A couple things about the Indian deal: apparently a US company got the engine contract for one of their domestically produced fighters. This was the one we had the contract for twelve years ago before Clinton put an embargo on India for testing some nuclear weapons. They tried to develop their own but had problems.

As for the fighter contract: I suspect they're interested in the F-18 model because it has an electronic warfare version and a really good radar. I am under the impression that a lot of the reason the F-15 force is "behind," relatively speaking, is that while we were building the F-22 we weren't bothering to upgrade things like the radar in the F-15 because hey, we'd have the F-22. Meanwhile the Russians were upgrading the radar in the Su-30, with the money they got from the Indians.

Her and her family are fully assimilated in the U.S. She does not live in an "Indian Community" where everyone speaks some foreign dialect.

148 Not sure I get why pressing for military sales from India is a bad idea.  Everyone with something worth selling does so to just about everyone with ability to buy (needed or otherwise).  Just follow defense news and you'll see how many countries jump when someone expresses interest in 50 aircraft or 200 tanks or something.

152 If you build ONE GOOD PLANE it will turn to have lots of uses. The definition of one good plane may vary, but the basics include a high thrust-to-weight ratio and a low-to-moderate wing-loading. Look at the P-38,P-47, Corsair... Excellent escorts, excellent air superiority fighters, superb ground attack machines. Look at the F-100 Super Sabre, F-4 Phantom and the F-16. Excellent interceptors, air superiority fighters and ground attack machines. All combat proven in those roles. It's the specialized machines that prove to be the white elephants: the P-39, the F-104, the wretched F-102. I suspect many additional uses will be found for the F-22, long before the -35 enters service.

130 D'Souza isn't the first to argue that Barry's stuck on Barak's anticolonialism. I wonder what all will be new in his latest book. Interesting link.

“It may seem incredible to suggest that the anticolonial ideology of Barack Obama Sr. is espoused by his son, the President of the United States. That is what I am saying. From a very young age and through his formative years, Obama learned to see America as a force for global domination and destruction. He came to view America's military as an instrument of neocolonial occupation. He adopted his father's position that capitalism and free markets are code words for economic plunder. Obama grew to perceive the rich as an oppressive class, a kind of neocolonial power within America. In his worldview, profits are a measure of how effectively you have ripped off the rest of society, and America's power in the world is a measure of how selfishly it consumes the globe's resources and how ruthlessly it bullies and dominates the rest of the planet.”

The KingÂ’s College seeks ambitious students who want to make a difference in the world. The college aims to contribute to American society by producing graduates who command the important intellectual traditions, who think lucidly about the social and political issues that confront them today, who write with force and flair, who speak with eloquence, and who are eager to exchange ideas in open debate with those who espouse different views. The KingÂ’s College educates students to lead with principle as they aspire to make America better. We prepare students for principled leadership. And nothing else. Like F117A
B-1

B-52
B-17
F-14
A-6

and on and on and on....

Those multipurpose planes. I love the P-38 but, it was not the best fighter in the sky, nor capable of serious ground pounding. The only thing it did really well was long range intercepting, in that role it was spectacular. The P47 was nearly incapable as a fighter, it's only advantage in a close fight was it's ability to dive away and escape; oh and it could carry a LOT of enemy lead back to its airfield. The Corsair had a thing for killing pilots with bad aerodynamics, could barely outrun the zero; a wing of Corsairs could not carry enough ordinance to sink a decent sized vessel.

So no, I disagree, the "single platform" concept has produced a number of aircraft which had mediocre at best coverage of their secondary roles.

There'll be pro/con propaganda regarding recycling former candidates for 2012. So far as the Republican establishment is concerned, either ignore the Tea Party demands or give the protest lip-service. It's as if the Tea Party phenomena never happened, exhausted itself into oblivion, or is too "inexperienced in politics" to know what's best for America.

"Fred could have BEEN an excellent President, but he wasn't much interested in RUNNING for President."

Given his name on the ticket, I'd vote Thompson hands down.

1. The candidates MOST interested in RUNNING perpetual campaigns make the WORST presidents. Voters so intoxicated with campaigning's intrinsic sinister elements are the very addicted minds who forced Obama on the rest of us. Take Obama. Dress him with elephant tusks, Romney who promised socialism his last weeks in Michigan, government subsidized manufacturing jobs, ANYTHING for votes.

2. Teh Fred would be an excellent President. For any purposeful mind, campaigning only has its proper place without permeating all else in the value system. It isn't as if Thompson has to prove anything to anyone. We already know who he is, and how he will perform as America's Chief Executive.

Thompson is a fiscal conservative. He BEGAN the common sense Constitutional Platform long before Palin showed up, and before the Tea Party materialized.

His campaign was sabotaged by the likes of media mouths and bloggers who kept up the mantra that Fred "lacked fire in the belly" and that he was quitting. Fred acknowledged on radio the other week, regarding Angle in Nevada, that from his own experience he learned that having the right campaign manager makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE between winning and losing, despite a candidate's ability, experience and qualifications.

Unlike any other candidate, Thompson has the best of friends in Republican circles, great minds who would comprise a magnificent conservative administration with him.

Thompson's PROVEN he listens to citizens' concerns. And his level headed maintenance of good will is particularly well accomplished during raucous moments following Obama's hateful assertions towards conservatives.

Putin et al. could never stare down Fred Thompson. Whereas, plastic bambi Romney melts under the lights, and Palin's eyelashes would flutter. And Perry would make a deal under the table in his own attempt to rule globalist power.

198 I don't want "awe-inspiring". I want a human being who has the ability to operate in, and understand the complexity of, the modern international economy. As I stated earlier (I think) I have already lived with Romney as my Chief Executive, and watched him fight with the moonbats every single day of his term. He never had less than 85% of the Legislature against him (that's not an exaggeration) and he still managed to retain the corporations/industries (Raytheon, among others) that the Libs had been trying to drive out for generations.

The A-10 is a good aircraft for what it does but it isn't the end all to end all. My brother worked on the electronics for that plane. Every time it fired its main gun every electronic device in the plane went tits up and had to be yanked. Despite the circuit boards being tripped dipped in a compound to seal them they literally vibrated to pieces when that gun was fired.

They were getting like the F-14 in that they were hard to keep in the air. Meanwhile the old Harriers are doing OK with the Marines. I have a BIL who works on those at Cherry Point.

Nice try, Mav. But teh Fred! didn't do a friggin' thing to convince voters he had the attention span or interest to go through with the job if they elected him.

Never mind the "conservative" bloggers or any of that. In the debates, Fred! came off as unprepared, which is a cardinal sin for any would-be leader who wants to be taken seriously. He didn't hit the trail enough even to say he would serve if elected.

A great guy, and potentially a fine president. Better, without doubt, than Osama Obama, McCain, Mutt Romney or Shuckabee. But even if the presidency wasn't Fred!'s highest aspiration in life, he needed to step and and convince voters he would remain engaged for at least four years.

If he wants to try again, I'd sure as hell listen. I'd even ignore his pimping for some reverse-mortgage outfit. But I'd expect him to display some energy, some serious desire to serve.

Posted by: JEM at October 01, 2010 11:57 AM I think he was okay campaigning, he simply was not into 'playing the game'. He was more interested in substance over style. Unfortunately, you've stated the major problem we have among the American electorate right now: they care more about style over substance. That's the only reason Obama got elected. He was all style, no substance. (Plus he ran as the anti-Bush candidate). Fred Thompson was not interested in playing that game of sound bites and gotcha statements and mud slinging, etc. His YouTube commentaries were all focused on issues and policies and ideology. Apparently, a common sense adult was not 'sexy' enough for the American electorate. In addition, too many Republican voters and 'conservative' voters were more focused on "electability" than on substance. It's sad when we are living in a time when the American electorate gives more credence to how someone campaigns for President, rather than how someone will govern as President.

True, but one also has to consider logistics.  If your fighting a long way from home trying to supply and then resupply a base with enough parts to keep 1 type of plane up and going as opposed to trying to supply them with enough parts to keep 5 seperate type of aircraft up and running and suddenly the "multi-role" aircraft starts looking a bit more attractive.

Yes, in the design you are always going to have certain trade-offs.  Building an aircraft for multi-role will always make it less than ideal in other types of missions.

But for a country like India that really can't afford to spend a boatload of money trying to purchase, maintain, and aquire parts for dozens and dozens of different aircraft, purchasing something that can fulfill a variety of rolls is probably their best bet.

Boeing's F/A-18 Super Hornet is also competing with Lockheed Martin's F-16 , France's Dassault Rafale, Russia's MiG-35, Sweden's Saab JAS-39 Gripen and the Eurofighter Typhoon, produced by a consortium of European companies."

As I understand it, one of the F-18s drawbacks in this particular competition is that it's large; the Indians would prefer a small single-engine plane.

Looks like India's also getting some C-130s.

211 This has alwasy been the American way of electing Presidents. Campaigns matter. You can have the greatest ideas in the world. If you can't sell it to the people who are voting...you will not win. Posted by: Henry at October 01, 2010 01:11 PM True... to a point. I don't believe Obama would have been taken seriously in many previous elections. Heck, the only way he was elected to IL State Legislature and the US Senate was because he got his opponents taken out and ran unopposed. Then, in the 2008 Democrat Primary and Presidential Campaign, he played the race card constantly (to both prop him up as a historical candidate and to beat his opponents over the head as racists were they to wield any criticism his way), lied about President Bush's economic record, had the mass media cover up his entire background and history and shrugged off any associations with Rev Wright and Bill Ayers. 2008 was not a case of selling oneself and one's ideas (most Obama voters simply voted for "change" or "hope"), so much as it was a case of tapping into the ignorance and naivety -- and 'white guilt' -- of the American electorate. Would that have been possible at any other time in recent campaigns? Assuming he had the same background at the time... would a Senator Obama have been able to beat Gore in a Primary in 2000? Would a Senator Obama have been able to defeat President Bush in 2004? My guess is no. Also, during the 2008 GOP Primaries, I can't even remember how many times I heard "conservatives" say "I support Fred/Hunter/(insert any other conservative candidate here), but the polls show they probably can't win, so I'm just going to vote for Romney/McCain/Huckabee, because the polls show they probably can win". Imagine if "conservatives" actually voted for their candidate of choice, instead of voting for whom the polls told them to vote. I dunno. I'm sure in every campaign there is showmanship, but I think we are in a time now when we have more than usual showmanship than substance and the electorate doesn't seem to mind. Until they realize they voted for showmanship and the showmans turn out to be corrupt jackasses. They then whine and blame the corrupt jackasses, when it was they who were stupid enough to vote for their showmanship and put them in office in the first place.

"I was responding to an OT posting.  By the way who do you support so I can act like a six year old retard and call them a name too."

I support Palin.  And yea, go ahead and try and think of a name somebody else hasn't called her or her supporters.  Who cares what you call her.  She doesn't.

She's had libturds waving signs calling her a F_ _king C_ _t.  Think you can top that?  She's had libturd homos set fire to her church.  Think you can top that? Be my guest.

She went eyeball to eyeball with three international oil companies that owned the legislature and they backed down.   No brag; just fact.

By the way, when is the Mitt boy going to come out and fight?  Why does he hide in the shadows and pimp out his media whores (ala Krauthammer) to take snarky shots at the Guv.?  You think you'd make a better president?  Fine.  Go on national television and tell us what you stand for and what you would do.  Where are you Mittens?  Come out, come out wherever you are!  What's the matter Mitt, scared of a girl?

F him and all Northeast liberal elitist draft dodging Wall Street hustling RINO douche bags that look like him.

P.S.  .. and the horse he rode in on.

213 Posted by: Call Me Ishmael I'm sure Palin is thrilled to know that she has the "shit-for-brains Internet screamer" vote all sewn up.

215 I'd like to see the Indians buying F18s.  In order to sweeten the pot I'd throw in the aircraft carrier Kittyhawk.  Hell, to sweeten the pot I'd also throw in all the F-4s they want.  That would give them the capability to have a presence anywhere they want from the coast of Africa to the Philippines.

It would also make the Pakistanis go absolutely apeshit.
