I could post this anywhere, but I'll post it here.  I really can't believe this man is our president.  I have never in my life (39 and counting) ever imagined anyone less presidential.  Even real novices grow into the job.  After 2 years even Bill Clinton was looking kind of statesmanish.  Obama looks less like a president now than he did when he took office, and he looked nothing like one then.  I get more amazed with every passing day.

Gabe, If I am reading it right it is a 2% reduction on the employees Social Security withholding tax, not a 2% cut on "payroll tax".

So it's 4.2% for the employees share of SS withholding instead of 6.2%.  The employer is still paying the whole 6.2% I believe, as well as all the other medicare, state, and federal witholding.

It isn't a 2% across the board cut of all payroll taxes.

It will be marginally noticiable at best.

They extended funding UC for 13 months. They did not extend the 99 weeks eligiblity by 13 months. Now they will not have to vote on it for another 13 months. If they had not done this, people who had only been unemployed for 26 weeks would no longer been eligible for any extention. Remember, they voted on this about 4 or 5 months ago and the funding they voted for then ran out on Dec. 1st. This is just status quo, nothing new.

The average person doesn't earn 100,000 a year, they earn 44,000.00.  It'll be about 70 bucks and change a month(depending on if your paid monthly or bi-monthly). While that is nice, and I'll take it, keep in mind it is a payroll cut for the employee, not the employer. It is the employers we need to give incentives to in order for them to hire.

That's only half accurate. There are a lot of employers, the company I work for included, that have the work to hire more people, but intentionally haven't because of cost related to employees and uncertainty. A company can have work to do but the government can make the company think twice about hiring new people. Just think about your local bank. When the recession began they cut bank tellers down. Now when you go to the bank, you have to wait in a long line because they only have a couple of tellers. The work is there. It's just too costly to hire people to do it. Sure if the economy goes gangbusters, then the banks will fill those spots immediately, however in the meantime, tax cuts on the employers payroll might help, and probably will, convince them to bring back at least 1 more teller at each branch location.

You're right in that a payroll tax won't spur massive hiring that will solve all our problems, but I'd be willing to bet it would spur enough hiring to shave a percentage point off the unemployment rolls.

Good point about the fair tax.  That was a big deal in 2007 and he was the only one to embrace it.  I think that Huck's name came up in the evangelical churches quite a bit.  I do think that his stock has sunk, but he'll still be strong in Iowa.  I also think Mitt has a better standing vis-a-vis the pro-life issue than he did then.  But now he has the MassCare problem.

Indeed. However, another reaosn people aren't hiring, and this is only for select businesses, is Obamacare. One we still don't know what the F is in it. But we do know that it becomes effective if your company has more than 50 employees. So there are a lot of companies out there that may have 40-49 employees and the work to hire more, but the potential profits of that work don't outweigh the costs if they have to comply with Obamacare.

There are so many things our government is doing that is directly resulting in keeping people out of work.

114 As for buisnesses hiring my prediction early last year was that if the Republicans took both houses of congress (not likely) there would be a fast turnaround. If they only took the House the slide would stop (for real) and a slow recovery would begin provided we elected non-RINOs who demonstrated that they would not pass crap and tax type legislation and tax hikes. I further predicted if we didn't take either house we would collapse totally because we could not continue with what was going on.

We are now going to get the slow turnaround.....provided we don't get too many GD "deals" next year. Business will wait though until they see what the House is going to do.

This, ladies and gentlemen.  We don't have the House until January, and letting the tax rates go up now would make it almost impossible (Remember, still Dem Senate and Prez) to bring them back down (even retro-actively) in 2011.

Much of this was probably Kabuki, but it does really help with some things right now, and we can look at making things better when we actually have some power (as opposed to what we have right now which is an expectation of power).

I'm not thrilled about everything in it, but the full Conservative option wasn't going to be enacted anyway.  Yes, you fight for that (and our Reps did), but when you get a compromise you can actually work with, sometimes you just need to take it.

Gotta disagree with you on Dubya's "strengths." GWOT? I'd call his actions against terrorists half-hearted and wimpy, at best. (I was very diligent and TRIED for about 7 months but I find working at $10 per hour for 15-30 hours per week much less stressful than collecting UI.  Not sure how my landlord feels about it, though!)

*This might sound crazy and I'm all about fighting for basic economic survival at this point but I'm still, really interested in how retailers (at the corporate level) make their decisions as to what goes in and out of individual stores.  I think that I should get an MA in accounting at some point, if I want to pursue this.

Honestly, scheduling is also why I get paid crap by my "regular" employers and eat it up!

Give me at least 20 hours per week and I'll stick with you, at this rate.  So long as you give me at least 20 hours per week, every damn week, I will represent you.

(Honestly, I haven't even got that, lately!  Some stores, the time budget is 90 min. but seriously, I'm just DONE after 40 min. or so...  I have tried but Lord Knows, I am incapable of dicking around for more than 5 minutes.  Just makes me itch!)
