White House Still Considering Raising Electricity Prices During Bum Economy
— Gabriel Malor

They will never learn:

President Obama will likely discuss setting caps on the utility sector when he meets with senators this week, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel told the Wall Street Journal on Friday.

"The idea of a 'utilities only' [approach] will also be welcomed," Emanuel said, noting that "a wide range of ideas will be discussed." Obama is scheduled to meet with a bipartisan group of senators Wednesday as Democratic leadership plans its strategy for bringing an energy and climate package to the floor this summer.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) -- who is co-sponsoring a Senate climate and energy bill with Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) -- said he would also consider a power plant-only cap.

I just can't emphasize it enough: the President wants to raise electricity rates (and the cost of everything in the country produced or served using electricity). This is indefensible in a bad economy. Even artards like Lieberman and Graham, who bought into the global warming bullhockey, should recognize that.

But it's also unconscionable at any time because there's no reason to believe that any of these proposed carbon caps are going to improve human lives. They're just going to make life more difficult for the people least able to pay for Democratic pipe-dreams. (See also the gasoline tax.) And in the meantime, they'll hobble the U.S. economy.

8 Osama Obama wants to raise prices on everything. That way, he can tax the bejesus out of "runaway profits" and spend the loot on government assistance to his cronies and other members of protected classes.

He doesn't give a FFAARD about the environment. He simply wants to punish people who are actually productive to benefit those who have never done anything. Like him.

This is all about revenge, visited on the country by a hate-filled, none-too-bright Marxist.

Gosh, I'm sure no one will notice the bump in their electricity bill when Obama's out there touting his new fund for fathers.  From Michelle Malkin's site:

The Budget also includes $500 million for a new Fatherhood, Marriage, and Families Innovation Fund. The fund will provide competitive grants to States to conduct and rigorously evaluate comprehensive responsible fatherhood programs, including those that incorporate healthy marriage components and demonstrations geared towards improving child outcomes by improving outcomes for custodial parents with serious barriers to self sufficiency as a mechanism for improving outcomes for children in these families.

What could possibly go wrong there?

103 What your missing is that the utilities themselves are pushing for a "price for carbon".  They need that kicker to move regulatory commissions on plans for newer plants using NG or Nuc.  I would not be surprised to see the costs of the carbon taxes built into the ROI models that support current regulated price levels - you may already be paying it.  In un-regulated states, the same economics are there to a smaller degree in the bond market.

I don't think the utilities are really excited abut nuclear. If they were, they would be pushing that. No, the Utilities are a percentage business. The quip is that it is the only business where the CEO can turn a profit for shaerholders by redecorating his office. More money spent = more profit.

Their play, as in Europe, is that if costs skyrocket then profits skyrocket. It is like fanny and freddie.

111 Like Rush said today, in order to destroy the Chi-coms so that we can compete again, we need to start exporting our labor unions, our environmentalist whackos, our femi-nazis, etc. to bring them to their knees just like they've done to businesses in America.

We could thoughtfully include a single .38 cal glaser with each one; if that would help clear up any visa issues.

103 Darth, didn't something similar happen in chicago? with heat?

From what I can find on the internet, back in '95 Chicago had a 120 degree summer that lead to the deaths of 790 people due to heat related causes.  Of course, back then we still had a viable, capitalist economy.

113 To bambam the economy is not an issue except for reelection.

Cap and trade will mean more money and power to gov. and more money to distribute. that means more punishment for small business (who will bare the bulk of costs) and more control over big business (who can afford to buy politicians votes) and more cahs to distribute to voters. It's a triple win for big gov and socialism and the state of the economy makes it more important to get the control and the money so they can buy the next election.

Posted by: nine coconuts at June 21, 2010 01:09 PM (DHNp4)

114 I don't know 9cocos - I have seen the utilities pushing for modern nucs hard here in DC.  They are dropping significant coin on lobbyists for something they don't want.  I would say next generation natural gas is preferred - but they each want a blend - with coal as a significant part.

Their big push is (was) how to deal with the restrictions on derivatives in the new financial bill -- their long term fuel contracts are derivatives.

117 Jean,
I don't see the push, but I am not following it closely. I know they really like NG but my guess is that they are trying to line up a profile that allows them to sell credits to other companies.

I dont know the current status of the legislation, but i would expect that they will get free money if they have lower than average CO2 output, and if they can be all coal now, and then switch to NG or Nuc after the bill passes they get lots of free money.

My guess is that this is separate accounting from how they will bill the customers. so lots of free money, and high costs means higher profits. Time to buy a villa!

118 Speaking of electricity, you might want to watch today's Glenn Beck program on FOXNews (06/21/10). It hypothesizes with some logical thinking and with some facts a "crime" loop tying together Soros, the Podestas, Center for American Progress, BP, Petrobras, GE, and Obama and his policies. It's truly incredible.

Of course, our businesses were all too happy to give up without a fight on way too many occasions.  The Chinese, who are cool with shooting people who bitch about stuff, would not suffer a whole hell of a lot.  They might suffer from a momentary shortage of bullets in their Type 56 rifle magazines, but that would be it.

@42: "At what point does Ockham's Razor kick in and the simplest explanation--that Obama is an unrepentant academic communist who is doing as Ayers taught him--begin to be plausible?"

The bigger questions are (1) will enough people actually care; and (2) what can be done?  There's really only two ways to get rid of a politician - the first attracts attention from the Secret Service, and the second is a purely academic exercise unless the GOP controls both house and senate and somehow grows a spine.

So basically, Obizzle isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
