Who is Guy "Guido" Fawkes Anyway?
— Dave in Texas

Much has been made (idiotically) regarding Time magazine, the 2007 publication you can read in your doctor's waiting room, associating the recent cool ad from the Republican Governors Association, the meme "Remember November" (from the Fantastiks), and a 17th century anti-British government failed Big Ben Bomber named Guy Fawkes.

I say 17th century as a guess, because it happened around 1605, and for reasons I'm still fuzzy about, you're supposed to add a century for the th.

This is about as lame as you could imagine something from Time could be. And "lamest Time" thing is a pretty high bar.

I give them points for some knowledge of history. Anyway, this is the most pathetic weak-tea (see what I did there?) attempt by an unread media outlet to associate a Republican political advertisement with domestic terrorism I've ever seen. I say could be, because I haven't been to the doctor's office in a while. There might be more lamer shit out there between the cushions, I don't get around in the waiting room scene.

So some of you might be asking "who is this Guy Fawkes guy they're talking about, the example of domestic anti-government (hint: anti-government now is the new 'anti-Obama' agenda slur, cause he's the government now and if you're against that you're a goddanged RACIST TERRORIST which is their point not to give away the whole thing here or nothing) guy (no pun there, it's his name) who wants to blow up Obama admin (see prev. splanation about govt = Obama you racists) with bombs and stuff?" (Sorry for the long sentence Mr. White)

Well he was a guy feller with a funny hat who was fighting a religious war (hint: CHRISTIANS!!111!1) against the crown by attempting to set off mucho explosives underneath England's Parliament (hint: Congress!!) while King James and the Gang were there meeting to oppress them further.

The Brits laugh at him every year everafter, which is a) a long time and b) a friggin cool thing to do and we should adopt this practice.

SO history tagged him as a terrorist (and a swarthy one, see: "Guido". Sounds just like Timothy. Try it) and he got arrested and all before he could do in fact what he planned to do (they did not have a Patriot Act!), and whatever else happened happened, I don't want to get into that right now.

The only real point I'd like to make to the readers of Time Magazine, all 27 of you, is that "Remember November" might actually refer to, call me crazy, an upcoming election, which is on our radar but up until recently when your boyfriend pushed our buttons all year might not have been on yours.

Have a nice weekend.

* I have totally stolen this format from our pal Rosetta, who will hate me now with a pure white hot hateyness, and that warms my soul. Stealing is wrong. It's very very wrong.

I'm sorry.

Okay, this:

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...

And "Remember November" are clearly not the same thing, especially if you read the contents of the R's new website. They're obviously talking about the election, not some plot to blow up Congress. Besides, if they were to try to do such an act convincingly, they'd be dead, too.

I saw it in a movie someplace.

12 The problem is the same as the "new mellinium" thing.

Since facts are no longer taught in school, progressives can not deal with simple language constructs.

The First Century (in the current reckoning) started (at least nominally) with Year One  and ended with Year One Hundred.  (Yes, let us ignore the 3 and 33 year problems--they are book-keeping errors, not structural issues. and yes, for the comp0uter geeks it would have been handy it they had started with Year Zero, running to Year Ninety Nine.  But I don't think we had invented Zero yet.)

The Second Century ran from Year 101 to Year 200 (notice the "add 1" thing already at work?)..

Some where along the way some illeterat failed to handle the fine points involved with not adding the One if the Year ended in 00, so now we have the maximum drive the geeks crazy thing of the 20th Century running from 1900 to 1999 instead of from 1901 to 2000 like it  should.

I don't know that conservatives have to rebel against "Obama" as much as they have to rebel against the mindset that has allowed him to be elected.  Barry's just a symptom of this country's disease.  Being angry at Obama is about as productive as screaming at a genital wart.

You might hate the genital wart, but the genital wart is just doing what genital warts do.  The real problem is your inability to control your man-junk.

Worst analogy ever - I'm drunk.

It's heartening to see someone on our side who actually understands how to make an effective message.  I hope that whichever idiot the RNC rigs as the next pres nominee gets the hint and adopts a similar technique.  This is the only way to win.  Go negative, and go negative immediately and totally.  Throw in positive stuff as an afterthought to show that we have a message, but mainly just use the public stupidity of our enemies against them.  Pound 'em.  Incite as much public rage as possible, to the point where people will crawl over broken glass to vote them out.

The absurdity of the assertion that this ad is an incitement to some sort of rebellion is obvious to anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together.  If one wanted to stir up an insurrection, there is way better stuff out there to do that.  Like, for example, including info about the way Holder basically legalized voter intimidation for the Black Panthers.  Or how Obie went ahead and put a man who advocates legalization of child molestation in office as the "safe schools" czar.  Or the "God damn America" bit by his spiritual mentor.  Or the recent bump in IRS staffing combined with their large purchase of short barrelled shot guns.  Or a montage of Obastards ghetto-slime supporters, howling in triumph and anticipation of their free rent, free car, free food, and free everything else at the expense of the tax payer (not to mention their utter contemptuous treatment of the police, telling them "we're in charge now!").  Or perhaps a reminder about the massive pay increase for bureaucrats that recently went through.  I could go on and on.  If the Reps ever had enough balls to call a spade a spade, those are the things they would put in an ad.  They could wrap it up with some of the founders' comments regarding why they wrote the 2nd amendment, including the "tree of liberty" bit that we all know and love - followed by the recommendation that Americans form militias in preparation for any illegal moves by the federal government.  If they did all that, which would be 100% justified, then I could see some small, though still illegitimate, merit in the Leftists' concerns.

66 Well, let's not get too clever here.  It's not an unreasonable stretch to think that the RGA ad was trying to remind people a little bit of Guy Fawkes.  Maybe not in the whole "blowing up Parliament" way, but in terms of revolutionary-type zeal to restore our government and save the Republic.

But, of course Time wouldn't apply that level of nuance to the crazy right wing tea baggrz - no, according to them, we are plotting seditious mass murder.  But, really - as far as we are concerned, WHO CARES?  This is the SOP for liberals.  They live in liberal enclaves in liberal cities, they don't actually know any conservatives, and so the only way they have to understand anything that we do is through their own leftwing biases and caricatures of us.

To them, there can be no principled opposition to liberalism.  To be a liberal is to be a good person.  So to them, whenever anyone says anything negative about liberalism, it must spring from evil motives and malicious intent.

79 To them, there can be no principled opposition to liberalism.  To be a liberal is to be a good person.  So to them, whenever anyone says anything negative about liberalism, it must spring from evil motives and malicious intent.

One of the things that has fascinated me greatly of late is the left's latest examination of "the closing of the conservative mind".

They aren't actually talking to conservatives to come to this conclusion - they are watching/reading leftwing stereotypes of conservatives and thereby pronouncing us as closed minded. It is fascinating in a way really.

96 SantaRosaStan, well I don't think Guy Fawkes is as completely forgotten to history as you may think (there WAS a recent movie about him), but still, this whole kerfluffle is no different than when libs hyperventilated about Sarah Palin wanting to "take our country back" - to them, this was dangerous seditious revolutionary rhetoric, even though when that same exact phrase was used by the left during the dark Bush years, nobody at Time or elsewhere gave it a second thought.

The mere fact that any conservative says anything that might possibly be construed in a negative light is proof enough that the worst possible motive must be ascribed to the speaker - again, because to them, to be a liberal is to be a good person, and so conservatives are not good people and when they say something they obviously have evil intent.

It all makes sense once you understand the modern liberal mind.  A conservative is a bad person.  So Rush Limbaugh, a conservative and therefore bad person, must tell lies.  So why would anyone listen to someone who tells lies over and over again?  Ergo, the reason why your liberal friends complain.

Why?

I'll tell you why.

Because the Tea Partiers are racist and anti-immigrant, you see, and their bigotry makes illegal immigrants angry, see, and so, being "the oppressed", it's only natural that they have a short fuse when it comes to having their "rights" infringed.

IOW the racist  Tea Party bastards fomented the riot and violence--- just as Bill Clinton predicted they would.

I guarantee some leftard will make this argument.

Well it is becoming more and more clear why the libs are now pushing to legalize pot, it makes BS logical like this Times deal seem to make sense and gives them an excuse for their short term memory loss resuting in their inability to recall the hatred and vitirol that they all oozed out during the Bush Presidency.

But you know what libbies?  Those of us who really are in the reality based community recall that your people ran on a platform of fical responsibility and moderate social policies.  Moreover, those who were decieved  into actually swallowing that crap sandwich, which was made palitable by the romance of electing the first black President, are now aware just how you lied to them.

It is now time to buckle up buttercups, put on your big boy pants and face up to the reality that you have really screwed the pooch and that your people are going down in flames in November.  Not because of "angry white men" or "racist, homophobic tea partiers", but because your people turned a deaf ear to the very people who put them in office and put the interests of the Democratic Party first.  Of course this means that you have to take responsibility for your actions, an act that you are clearly unfamiliar with, but who knows, it may become a habit.

That must have been terrible!  I'm glad I never have to hang around such places.  I do my best to never come into contact with the near-ubiquitous gutter trash infesting this nation, those wretched products of the welfare state, yet even I can not escape their noisome presence completely.  Seeing what you saw there would probably push me over the edge into carrying out some kind of one-man pogrom.  If only we could have some kind of plague go around that would kill anybody who didn't wash their body at least once every 2 days with soap and water...

Good.  I love when the Libtards get all excited about this.  There is a roughly 70/30 split on this subject favoring our side.  The more the leftist trash bitch about it the better.  They do nothing but show that they are opposed to the best interests of the nation and its people.  The Reps need to spell out the facts - the recession has hit the low end of the pay scale the hardest - and those are the jobs being stolen by illegals.  Simple as that.  You want the unemployment to drop?  Deport the illegals.  Please, liberals, scream and holler for the poor, disadvantaged illegals.  Drive the independents away from you!

190 Dude from Washington Post is making the same wimpy noises about Guy Fawkes

http://tinyurl.com/46yrx

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at April 24, 2010 08:04 PM (PQY7w)

191 Guy Fawkes was by no means a terrorist. He actually DID try to attack targets that had direct political significance. He wasn't trying to scare the people in charge to enact change; he was trying to actually kill them. A terrorist would have killed the kings falconer or some other such ineffectual trash.

Furthermore, Fawkes did not cry foul like a little girl when someone dropped the word "enhanced interrogation". He took some real medieval level pain without betraying his comrades until he knew they had a chance. When sentenced to die, he took it like a man.

Whether you agree with his actions are not, rebel is a more accurate term then terrorist.

192 You people might laugh, but the whole thing is a lot more diabolical than it might appear at first glance.....There have been reports of signs at tea party rallies which say 'I Can See November From My House'. This is getting positively ridiculous, but ok, so be it.  This country wants itself a good, old fashioned bar brawl; let's just get it over with.  Hopefully if we do it sooner rather than later it won't get too horribly nasty.

I for one watched "V" and enjoyed it -- why?  because like all "subversive art" it fails to take into account that it can be taken against its own side.  Most lefties saw it and thought "Booosh!!!!"; meanwhile, others could watch it and be thinking "Lefties!!!" (and historically, the people who perceived it in the latter form are more correct -- take that Moore).
