— Ace Since this argument has begun again, let me explain, and hopefully, attempt to persuade.
First of all, there is the issue of people's personal sensitivities to the issue of race. I have some of this. Many readers do. Many voters do, including white swing voters. (More on that later.)
There is rarely overt racism per se on the blog. I try to avoid the word "racist" because it doesn't really apply. However, there is often what certainly sounds like an emotional-level animus directed at some groups. Now, that may not be racism at all. It may just be grousing. But you have to admit -- it does at least sort of sound like the tone of someone with a racial axe to grind.
This is what I mean by multiple comments in a row, each of which might have been okay on its own, becoming, in the whole, rather ugly, in that a series of comments each express some low-level hostility at blacks (or whatever) but taken altogether they seem to paint a picture of rather higher-level hostility.
It sounds, in short, that you're pissed off at black people. Not this black person or that one. But black people, generally, or at least most, with some prominent exceptions. And that's not racist per se, but, let's face it: You're not going to be winning a BET Spirit Award anytime soon, either.
It's not that frustrations like this can't be expressed -- I say this a lot: Racial politics is a part of politics, for good or for ill, and whites have something to say about racial politics too, and must be allowed to say so without being called a racist. Whites don't like racial set-asides and "plus factors" (minus factors for whites) for one thing. Nor socialist, economy destroying redistribution of wealth which seems undertaken 99% for purposes of "racial justice."
But certainly when we get into sensitive areas, delicate areas, we can try to be careful about wording and tone, so it doesn't lend itself to sounding like simple emotional resentment and anger. When I touch on these areas I do try to do that myself-- I adopt a clinical tone, and try to drain all passion out. Because passion in these areas is usually anger and frustration.
And I mean for me-- I am not without racial baggage or racial resentment myself. I get very bothered by things like, well, if there are a bunch of black teenagers on a subway car, I'm probably, 30% chance, in for a loud and misbehaved sort of ride, and 10% chance, in for some territorial fuck-with-the-white-people shit.
That has an emotional effect, which I try to fight, and try not to just vent that kind of emotion. Discussing it in clinical terms? Yeah, fine: Something needs to be said about the territorial payback instincts that a lot of black teenagers are being indoctrinated with.
But if I just vented about a particular experience, it would sound pretty ugly. So I try not to.
A lot of people are bothered by what they perceive -- maybe it's not intended; but it's so perceived -- at an ugly tone that creeps into the comments on posts on racial matters.
I get complaints. Further, it's not just me getting complaints; I am often bothered by a negative tone on racial matters.
Some people will dismiss this with a hand-wave as "political correctness." It may or may not be. It may just be political correctness, due to a childhood of relentless race-harmony messaging from the media and schools, which I internalized.
However, whatever it is, it exists. It's real. It may have been counterfeit or artificial in its inception but it's now a part of me. And it's part of many readers.
It also might not be counterfeit at all. I don't believe in political correctness per se, but I do believe in what I would call "racial politeness." I believe that it's generally a Good Thing, a Civic Good, to treat people as individuals and to refrain from unnecessarily branding groups with negative terms. I think that inflames people, bothers them.
I know that I -- and most of you -- don't like the idea that whites are, in some respects, treated almost as an official second-class citizen group by the government. With "racial plus factors" -- for whites, read "racial minus factors" -- and such. And not just in tangible ways, but in the general sort of suspicion and hostility directed at normal tax-paying law-abiding whites by the media and government class. We are treated as some distasteful group, full of bad feeling and bad intent, and it rankles. We don't like it. Hate it, in fact.
I would urge readers to consider that other racial groups have the same sensitivities when it comes to their groups being broadly criticized with a hostile tone, and that two wrongs don't make a right, and that if you're attempting to protest political correctness, there are better ways to do so than using the same weapon you don't like against others.
Not only is there a personal sensitivity here, there's a professional one. At some point this blog must end. I don't say because I want to give it up. I say that because that's life-- things end. And this blog is paying almost nothing (I'd be embarrassed to tell you) and only reader donations keep a roof off my head. (And on that -- I know my thank-yous are very late; I will send them. Let me say thank you to contributors as a group, but say I promise I will send out the individual thank-yous soon.)
So understand this: You may not think that racial politeness or political correctness is warranted, but the vast majority of the professional world does -- 99% of possible employers do -- and at some point I will have to put this blog forward as the work I have done for six, seven, ten years, and I will have to account for what is written here. Not just what I write; but what I allow to be written as well.
Also let me talk about politics. In 2000, in Bush's nomination-acceptance speech, I believe, he made a pitch to black voters. I forget the specifics -- it was something along the lines of, "Now we haven't been very welcoming of black voters... and (wry smile) black voters haven't been very welcoming of us." Laugh line.
Anyway, he made his pitch. A commentator -- Howard Finemann, I think -- noted that Bush didn't intend to get any black votes with that pitch. No, Finemann said, that pitch was about white voters who were uncomfortable with the Republican Party's media-insisted reputation for racism. He wasn't really hopeful about getting anything more than the usual 10% of the black vote (which is, I'm guessing, mostly servicemembers and army brats).
His appeal was instead to the large fraction of white voters who probably would vote Republican... if only it didn't have the reputation for racism.
By appealing to blacks, he was appealing to these whites.
Sometimes we have discussions about just how influential this site is. Some will buck me up and say it's quite influential; I often think not at all. And sometimes I think "just a little bit."
I think "just a little bit" is about right.
But the point then, is that this blog is not just about venting and catharsis and screwing around making dick jokes and posting as Pat Caddell. It is those things, of course. It wouldn't be at all without those things.
But there is a dimension of it, at least I hope there is a dimension of it, that is actually tangible, that actually can affect elections-- slightly.
My use of profanity and dick jokes isn't just a part of my personality. It is that, of course. But there was a reason for it, too, an intellectual one, a strategic one.
My idea was this: There are many attractive personalities on the right who can cultivate people who are strongly religious/rigorous in their personal moral behavior (and whose mores, I mean, in turn demand they not take delight in profanity or dick jokes).
But there were other Republicans, more like me, who were a bit... sketchy.
And furthermore, that there were people who could be Republicans, but were put off by the notion that it was all fuddy-duddy and straight-laced and no fun, but who maybe could be induced to pull the lever for the GOP if they saw there were other... sketchy characters in the party, too.
That it wasn't just a party, it was... well, a party. That we had fun. That we cut loose. That we weren't just all buttoned-up and inhibited.
We were the dirty conservatives.
That's not a big demographic, but it does exist. The fact that it is small will, unfortunately, forever limit this site's top size. But it will exist at a moderate size to serve that niche.
Now my point is: This blog is intended, among all the other things, as outreach. As an ambassador. As... well, an evangelizer.
And what frustrates me is that often comments are made without care or restraint that retard that intent of the blog, that undermine it, that defeat it.
I don't think some commenters are sufficiently respectful of other readers' sensitivities, nor of the sensitivities of less-formed, less-ideological possible Republican voters who may swing by for whatever reason, whether because they got a link from a friend in an email or overheard Rush Limbaugh mention the site.
One of the reasons I do this is to turn those people on to conservatism. And it bothers me when some commenters don't seem to be on that team, and seem, to my mind, to be turning them off.
It's easy to vent. And venting is fun. (And I should know, as I do vent. A lot.)
But 90% of the time what is easy, what one wants to do, isn't what one should do. That is life: That is what I have learned of life in my 29 years of existence. (Well, I will be 29.... and yeah, I've decided I'm 28 no matter what my Social Security card or "mathematics" has to say about it.)
90% of the time we spend justifying doing what we want to do to ourselves, we're wrong. Not just you; but me, everyone. Usually the right thing to do is the thing you're trying to rationalize to yourself you don't have to do. The thing you're arguing against in your head is the thing you probably should do.
I mention that because whenever this comes up, people start justifying/rationalizing hot racial talk as if it's a good thing, as if they're really advancing the cause, somehow, by throwing off the shackles of political correctness.
Well, are you sure of that? Or is that one of those cases, those 90% cases, where you're justifying the thing you want to do over the thing that's a little harder to do and which you have the sneaking suspicion might be the right thing to do?
And I say that because 99% of these comments I find objectionable or a little overly hostile could be perfectly, inarguably sensible and unobjectionable... if only there had been a little more care in their presentation and a little more consideration of tone and sensitivities.
And if that's the case -- if you can express pretty much any thought you like as long as it's done in a cooler, more careful way, without alarming anyone -- shouldn't that be the way it's done?
This ties into my greater point about the usefulness of anger in politics. It's a double edged sword -- anger is the most powerful force in politics. Anger wins elections. If we win big in November, it will be primarily because of anger.
As I've said: Intellect steers, but emotion drives.
But the flip side of that is that anger often looks ugly to people who aren't quite as angry as you. An angry person is generally unattractive and unappealing in his angry moment. Some find him attractive and appealing -- those who are angered themselves and feeling the fire too -- but for those we're trying to get into a Remember November mood, but who aren't quite there yet it's a turn off.
It is. Anger may be an energy, as John Lydon said, but anger is not an argument.
So this is why I get so pissy, so often, over this issue. I have good reasons for it -- you may not agree with these reasons, but they are, I hope you will concede, at least good reasons, even if you think you can muster better reasons against them.
We're out here -- or at least I'm out here -- to win. Not just to vent. But to win.
And I do get a little cantankerous when I don't see people getting into School Spirit with me.
Especially now, 79 days out from the election. I think most of you noticed -- last week the switch turned in my head that we are now in Full Campaign Mode. We're in just do it mode. We're in do or die mode. We're in taking care of business mode.
Or at least I am. I am now in full campaign fervor and ready to chew broken glass to get this thing done.
I hope you'l join me. We've got one shot at this. All right, we have two. There's another one in 2012. But how we fare in 2012 is directly related to how we do in 79 days.
So I implore you, fellow Dirty Conservatives:
Let's knock their dicks in the dirt, and let's remember we are all evangelists and all ambassadors.
And if that's too high a price to pay for turning out the socialist horde -- then I really don't think you are as anti-socialist as I am.
Something I Forgot To Mention: WhoDat wrote:
So far today, your readers are:
- angry

I responded:
Yes, you did: Many are at fucking work and attempting to read the site on a fucking computer owned by a fucking corporation which could get them into fucking big trouble if they're seen reading a site which appears to have a racial animus.

Longshot U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene has been indicted on a felony charge of showing pornography to a South Carolina college student.
This is absolutely disastrous for the Democrat Party because most conservatives were totally enamored with Mr. Greene. That's green with an 'E' according to Alvin, and I'm disappointed he won't become a United States Senator.

Well I really think that the parent should be criticized for the diaperhead, not the baby. I mean, the baby isn' usually the one that put the diaper on. Though, being babies it seems like a lot of them would put it on their head, so given the numbers, I hardly see how we can be too critical.

you make valid points but given that we have been bludgeoned with the race card whether warranted or o for say 50+ years now at some point there will be recoil to the action of the push.
I try to be polite, on my block we have about 1/3 minorities and we are all cordial...mostly there is a crazy hispanic or latvian woman who is a recluse that glares at all our kids black, white, asian, and hispanic but "politeness" eventually does necessitate a two-way street or you are setting up the whites to get steamrolled by the indoctrinated you alluded to IMHO.

Great post ace. I think most of what happens here isn't necessarily racist, it's people who are fired up about racial issues and race politics who don't take the time to realize what they're writing might be read by some (and used by others) as hate speech. Everyone needs to be careful, not because of political correctness, but because we need our words and sites like this that let us express them to have some impact beyond the choir.

Many will disagree with me on the following point. America can and will be liberated when a significant portion of us address the issue that we have allowed to exist in our midst when a large portion of our population is either used as a voting block to remain in power, and effectively warehoused in huge open air prisons we call ghettos or inner cities.
The other side of the SAME coin is to ignore this plight and go about our business, but this has allowed a cancer to keep growing in our midst that is helping to destroy us as a nation. To now have a culture that will have entire news programs run by both liberals and more conservative types following cases where a single middle class white girl is killed or missing, yet we have whole cities where young black men are being murdered in significant numbers by each other reinforces the message that we just don't give a damn.
Is it our responsibility? Perhaps not, but the reality is that somehow God does hold us responsible, We Are Our Brothers Keeper, and if we see our brother in prison, or hungry or unclothed and do not help, that was the very point of our judgment before God.
America must do something about this situation, just as the world better start caring that women are being whipped to death and stoned in Islamic lands...it is the abdication of such things being our responsibility that draws the wrath of God, not so much our venal sins of the flesh.
In part Europe is going dark first because it did not care for little Iraqi girls, and now little Afghanistan girls being tortured to death, beaten to death under a Satanic system. The next great revolution must be spiritual, and it must start here in America, we cannot afford a power base of voters who are forgotten, and then used by the corrupt. We allowed this to grow to the point where an obvious fool and evil man was given the reigns of power over us, and we rightly complain, yet Obama was simply the result of a disease we ignored. And Obama is the perfect illustrated sermon of a white liberal mixed together with a grievance-monger black man steeped in Marxist ideology, he is the perfect anti-American. Obama comprises in his person the very system we have allowed to exist and grow into a world-destroying monster in our midst.

BTW, just something that seemed significant to me at the time. Did anybody catch the week of rage in Oakland following the transit cop sentencing which everyone *knew* was going to happen? When the arrests were actually made, they looked to me to be the same miscreants that travel the world for G8 meetings to trash. The blacks ... pretty much behaved like most everyone else, voiced their complaints and left it at that. Something has changed (or what 'everyone' knows isn't quite right), and we probably should be paying attention to it.
But 90% of the time what is easy, what one wants to do, isn't what one should do. That is life:
I think St. Paul had something to say about that.

I have to disagree on one point - do you really believe that people are coming here who have not made up their minds about their political leanings? That can be persuaded to vote republican or for conservatives?
I doubt that. My guess is that 99.8% of the people who come to this site are either already in the choir (i.e., righties who already vote and are politically engaged) or come here to throw stones at the choir (lefties who already vote and are politically engaged).

This is carried over from the other thread, but as far as voting is concerned, it pretty much is all there is to say.
"Preference Cascade - I think the new media might show black conservatives / moderates that there are others out there and they don't have to hide."
To your point about outreach: This blog is a useful tool for outreach, people who are curious about what conservatives believe will come here and draw their own conclusions. If they're offended they'll leave for good, but if they really are open-minded, they'll base their decisions on more than what's expressed on one thread.
If more of us were able to interact with minorities on a personal level, barriers based on skin tone would be more easily brought down. But that's easy for me to say because I have a diverse family: black, brown , yellow, olive, and even Anglo. The only race that matters is the human race.

It also might not be counterfeit at all. I don't believe in political correctness per se, but I do believe in what I would call "racial politeness." I believe that it's generally a Good Thing, a Civic Good, to treat people as individuals and to refrain from unnecessarily branding groups with negative terms.
You can't treat everything that pertains to human interactions as nothing but individual behavior. That is just a practical impossibility - even aside from the fact that the great strength of the human mind is the ability to recognize patterns, to generalize and to abstract. Human groups have aggregate characteristics, with some groups sharing more of these than others. It is beyond folly to even contemplate not making generalizations about different groups. It is distinctly un-human to even attempt to build such a world of ignorant bliss - which is exactly what it is.
The problem is that people try and pretend that singling out certain races/ethnicities for special treatment (kid gloves, at the roughest, frankly) and don't really care what anyone says about the others. Personally, I find this sort of paternalism to be offensive, but most of society has deemed such behavior to be the only acceptable way of dealing with certain issues of race/ethnicity. That's just another reason why this society is headed into the chasm. Ignoring reality never solves any problem. Usually such problems fester and eventually kill the host.

Anyhoo, Holder was the real coward when he made his asinine comment, as I'm sure he knew that the Left would NEVER allow anyone from the right to attempt to hold a real conversation about race because the Left (as we've seen) has too much invested in the current paradigm of Left == Good for Blacks (even though the Democrat party FOUNDED THE KKK and VOTED AGAINST THE CIVIL RIGHTS BILL) and the Right == Fascists, wishing they could own slaves again.
It's how Obama got elected; everyone was afraid to point out the bad stuff about Obama for fear of the Race card being played and a lot of Whites let their false guilt override their commonsense.
Race in this country is like an earthquake. Earthquakes actually are a good thing as they release pent up pressure from the movement of the Earth's crust. If they didn't happen the pressure would eventually get so large that a cataclysm would occur when the strain finally overloaded the crust. We've danced around and stifled any real efforts to discuss how to create an equal society to the point where we're now afraid to do so because the reactions would be/are so intense. Everyone's been keeping quiet for so long and the frustration has built up so high that when any situation arises that has even a whiff of racism in it (egged on by the aforementioned Race Hustlers), we have riots and shootings. (another reason for the stifling on some folks part; an actual physical fear of the consequences.)
I'm concerned that the coming rebound of the Right will be seen as a sign by Blacks as a rejection of 'their' Black President and thus Blacks and that the elections will spark more resentment and possible physical confrontations on a Black vs White divide.
We've already had a taste of it during the townhall meetings last summer. Plus, it's only a guess but I would bet that Blacks make up a larger proportion of Federal workers than their proportion of the total population would indicate. The Federal government and the Unions embraced affirmative action hiring from the beginning so this shouldn't be a surprise.
What's going to happen when the Right tries to cut back the Federal workers pie?
It's not going to be pretty, folks.

True. But I know black conservatives, and ignorant they are not. Ignorance is the major problem. That makes schools a major contributor to the problem, and the fucking government fucked up the schools along with the parents who don't give a shit, and the teacher's unions who also don't give a shit. So it is up to individuals to educate themselves, and that takes effort.

Once, many months ago, late at night, a few commentors discovered that the anti-military stuff started showing up during the Korean war. We realized that it occured the first time, really, that the US was at war with communists. We extrapolated that the anti-military propaganda and subsequent lsm water carrying was at least begun by communists. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. Most of the baby-boomers, who to this day laugh at "military intelligence" jokes, have no clue why they have been cultured to think negatively about the military and hence military spending, et al.
When we talk about race issues, especially in politics, I'm always interested in examining why people think the way they do and how people were cultured (I know that's a novel way to use the word but I you know what I mean) to believe certain things and who was responsible.
As far as the problems we have with race in today's politics, I think it comes from the same place as anti-military bias. I grant that there were serious racial disparities long before Marx but I think his followers are the reason they haven't disappeared in this country.
So, IMHO, the direction to lead the race discussion is why, who, how, and can it be reversed? The communists accuse the teaparty of their own goals; fomenting fear. I don't think anger and resentment spring from racism but from fear and that fear was put in place for a reason.
We have to be careful with the quick comeback and look at from where the issues spring. I'd just like the good people who vote dem to examine why they do, but I don't know if they can.

I post on lefty blogs.. and it's damn hard to convince them (why do I try? who knows? masochism, I guess.. but maybe I just like stickin' it to 'em once in a while),, but it's hard to convince lefty's we don't care about color, we hate lefty ideologies period, when they can easily pull stuff out of conservative blogs that sure looks like racism... even if it wasn't meant like that.
So yeah.. some sensitivity might be in order.. without diluting the message..
Racism is an especially hot button for me in the immigration debate.. any, and I mean any little thing, said against illegal immigration policies is now all of a sudden bigoted and racist. I do what I can to call out race bating when I see it, but it is rampant with the left and I don't know how we can combat it fully.
anyway.. good post.

I have torn off a lot more calendar pages than you have, enough that I lived in a time when racial animus was still pretty overt. Likewise, I lived through the "New Sensitivity" that began in the 1960s and continues to this day. So my mileage may vary from yours.
Somewhere along the line, I became the problem and not the solution. Not because of anything I personally did, but because of my ethnic background.
I was responsible for the evils of slavery. I was responsible for sending poor kids off to war, for oppressing the helpless masses. Every billyclub or baseball bat that hit someone who only wanted to live in freedom had my fingerprints on it.
In short (I could go on and on), I was one of you people, judged solely by my race.
I have been insulted for that reason, have received indifferent service in stores because of it, have been denied jobs because of it.
And yet, I can honestly use the "some of my best friends are..." line to describe myself. I can say that I marched in civil rights demonstrations as a yoot, did volunteer work in an "inner-city" program.
I'll never say I am racism-free. Who can honestly claim that status for themself? Jesse Jackson? Al Sharpton? Give me a break. But I try to be honest. Good is good, and bad is bad.
Somewhere along the line, I rejected my "liberal" education in the 1960s. I cast aside as much political correctness as I possibly could.
As a result, when it is my sense that a large percentage of black people make themselves into a bloc and are pandered to by a political group I dislike intensely, I say so. I would say the same of groups that pander to whites, Asians, American Indians or Hispanics on a "you have had it so bad so let us give you reparations from someone else's pocket" level.
I would reject similar "outreach" from our side of the political aisle, too.
In part, this feeling stems from a basic truth: there are no ex-slaves in the United States today. Probably damn few (if any) children of ex-slaves. The number of Irishmen who survived the Potato Famine or suffered discrimination upon the arrival here is likely damn small, too.
Look through anyone's ancestry and you'll inevitably find that everyone is a descendant of someone who took it on the chin in a big way. But that doesn't entitle us to some special government handouts or hiring preferences.
My black friends know where I stand politically, and some are pretty irritated by it. We mutually try to keep that from affecting our personal relationships.
I've rambled on too long (et tu, ace?) but I want to make one more personal point: In real life, I'm a writer, albeit unemployed right now. I love words, and try to employ them for effect. When Ebonics words carry a punch, I'll use them. When slang from other languages is the best form of expression in a given situation, I'll use them. When plain old proper English is best (thanks to the interwebz and our current education system, that's getting more rare) is most effective, that's what I use.
I am an equal-opportunity offender. Be good -- at least by my standards -- or be zinged.

Posted by: Herr Morgenholz at August 13, 2010 10:22 AM (5aa4z)
Take me:
-I tutored inncer-city kids in New Orleans for 4 years.
-Had a really disapooint/eye opening AmeriCorp experience in NOLA where I went into the worst neighborhoods and tried to educated them about ways to improve their housing situation by shedding the lihgt on corrupt politicains and their lame excuses
-Worked for Habitat for Humanity in both Baltimore and Philadelphia where the primary beneficiaries were poor blacks.
-Worked tireless in one of the worst neighborhoods in Philadelphia to help control crime and improve the neighborhood.
-Hell I even helped a local democrat get elected to the state house because he was better than the corrupt and inept 20yr incumbent and I knew my time would be wasted working for a republican that only2% of the district would vote for.
Given my experiences, it pisses me the fuck off when I get accused of being racist because I disagree with democrats. And I'm often tempted to deliver the same base insults just because I want to lay the hurt, no matter the collateral damage, or whether or not I believe it. Most anger is not 100% rational.
Now I don't think that I've said anything racially charged, certainlly not in the last thread where I didn't post anything, but I understand how good people at some point get fed up with being faulted for something they had no part in. Being accused of contributing to the slavery, Jim Crow, and inner city-ghettos ought to be a serious accusation, yet the left throws it around brazenly. As a result, I think a lot of people have a very emotional gut reaction, where things come out before they're thought through entirely.
That being said, if we are the party of thinking rather than feeling, it's good to take a step back and reread your post to make sure it's what you really want to say, and not just a gut statement you might not really mean.

And argument is even less persuasive than being a total asshole is. Lydon is exemplary. He's securely an immovable, shouting douche. That's its own appeal, and it's pre-rational. Pro- or con-Lydon arguments that follow it are rationalizations of a first-look emotional attachment (or revulsion).
The Dems are similarly in-your-face—proud liars, panderers, crooks, favor-sellers, etc. Their core voters love them, and are eternally devoted to them, because they're that. The GOP is jittery, shifty, cowardly, obscurely motivated, untrustworthy, weak, asking-for-it. That's why even its supposed ideological base's support is unreliable.
Republicans can't win anyone over, except as an "oh well" second choice when the Ds are fucking up—unless and until the Party decides what it is and proclaims it unapologetically. In our lifetimes, there have been two R landslides: Reagan and '94. Those wins came from "We're this. Get in the damn car." campaigns. "Hey lady, you need a ride somewhere? I'm not gonna hurt ya" doesn't work.
Confident aloofness—"This is what we're about. Join us or don't. It's all on you"—is the only potentially winning posture the GOP can adopt toward groups whose first-look emotional attachment strongly points them elsewhere. Anything else comes off dishonest, clumsy, creepy, etc.
Analogy: The GOP is a "beta." No woman wants him until a long list of bad boys have already given her nine overlapping cases of herpes—and she'll go back and bang any of the herpes guys behind GOP's back anytime they booty-call. Everything GOP does to be "nice" makes her despise him even more. What should he do? Not calling her is step one.

You be right: For example, over 2/3 of employed Black women with a college degree work for the gubmint. Blacks are over-represented in government just as they are over-represented in gubmint 'transfer payments' like AFDC and SSI.
Recent legal non-White immigrants are even more over-represented in gubmint jobs and welfare, which partly explains why they vote overwhelmingly Demo. The other reason, which some on the previous thread wondered about, is RACE
in 2008, non-Whites ( regardless of ethnicity ) voted for O. Coincidence ?

I was so jumping-up-and-down, break-out-the-champagne, set-off-the-firecrackers ecstatic about McCain's announcement of Sarah Palin--with whom I was already passingly familiar--as his running mate, that I went immediately to the Internet and googled Sarah to get more info. One of the headings that caught my eye led me to Ace of Spades. And of course, I was immediately hooked.

I'll tell you why I am angry at Black people. It's because they turned their back on Booker T. Washington and his campaign for economic development and instead embraced W.E.B. DuBois and his campaign for instant equality.
Washington knew that economic development would overcome racial prejudice over time because whites would regard Blacks as economic producers with whom they could do business and ultimately lose any irrational fear of Blacks. DuBois believed that if you forced whites to treat Blacks as equals, there would be instant racial harmony.
One proof of the superiority of Washington's approach is that Black Americans were able to achieve wealth and widespread acceptance earliest in the fields of entertainment and sport -- fields in which outstanding performance commands respect and compensation. In many other fields, removing racial barriers made little difference in acceptance or achievement because few Black people were prepared through education and experience to excel in those fields. Affirmative action was an implicit acknowledgment of that failure, an attempt to overcome a failure to prepare with brute-force racial preferences.
The 20th century was largely lost to Black Americans because of the single-minded emphasis on civil rights and the neglect of education and economic development. One hopes that the 21st century will finally see Black America put its house in order.

This is profoundly true. If I"ve learned nothing else from my years of reading (and I haven't) it's that people hate weakness and compromise. People love only strength. This is true of both men and women, but especially of women. And the Reps never project strength, until they're backed into a corner, where even a mouse is finally forced to act like a man.
But there is a big segment of Christians who take the "be Christ-like" command to mean that, and they avoid profanity and avoid movies (for example) that have too much of it, since that would be taking delight in a non-Christ-like pleasure.

I've run into this a lot, particularly in my own family. Personally I think most of the time it's more a form of seeking refuge in legalism. As for me, once I get to the point where I can consistently forgive/love my enemies and put aside by hot, hot hate for them, I'll move on and start worrying about my movie watching & profanity.

Yes, you did: Many are at fucking work and attempting to read the site on a fucking computer owned by a fucking corporation which could get them into fucking big trouble if they're seen reading a site which appears to have a racial animus.
Solution: work when you're at work, and read blogs on your own time. Many companies will go ape sh*t if they find you browsing Amazon.com. It's not the racial content they'll object to per se, it's the 'you're f*cking surfing the web when you should be working' issue that'll they'll have a problem with. So, I dig the overall 'cool it' vibe, but the 'don't get in trouble at work' angle is weak.

True Racism: "My race is better than yours. Period."
Darwinian Racism: My race is better than yours because of genetics, and science has proved this.
(Both of the above have largely died out in the West as serious philosophies. I cannot comment on the state of other areas of the globe.)
Ethnocentrism: "My group is better than yours because we have our acts together in a way yours do not." Every group has this to a certain extent. I'm sure select Asian communities roll their eyes in exasperation at the foolishness of the rest of us...
Tribalism: "My group, may it always be right, but my group, right or wrong." Every group has this to a certain extent.
Group Identity and Animus: "You know, I really don't like XXX fans. Always show up late to their ballgames and play with beach balls and do the wave". Every group has this to a certain extent.
Cultural Predilection: "You know, I don't really find that I like hats turned backwards/sideways, gangsta rap, gold teeth, or anything remotely similar that appealing."
Commonsense: "Very hard to support children out of wedlock. Kinda a historical truth."
Political Philosophy Belief: "It is very hard to keep income redistribution societies from turning into Animal Farm oligarchies that forget that original 'noble' purpose."
Philosophical Belief: "We must cultivate our garden" and "He that does not work does not eat" and "What you create, is yours, within the rules of the system we have created" and "Don't throw good money after bad" and "Tomorrow is another day" (see 'tending to garden', above).
You know, when they on the left cry "racism", they mean one of the above. But which one?

Just a point to keep in mind, Ebonics is the only English dialect that saw its speakers (representatives) sue in court claiming that Ebonics speakers need to be treated as ESL students. I don't know if you remember this case (from the LA schools, IIRC) but this is what ticks people off. There's a suit in court claiming that Ebonics is a separate (and legitimate) language and then, on the other hand, it's treated as a slur in most other contexts.
What reason is there in that?

Besides the comment threads (which are the best in the blogosphere IMHO), one of the things I really like at AoSHQ is when you do one of your longer analyses/commentaries such as this one on race. I don't know how someone whose blog has so much gutter humor (this Christian conservative just skips over the really gross stuff) could be so profound and have such on-the-mark insights--but there you have it: You're one of the best.
(Hey, just remember a back-handed compliment is still a compliment!)
In this particular commentary, I especially appreciate your phrase "racial politeness." I think that should become a MAJOR MEME all over the country, I really do. One of the reasons the fascist/dictatorial/insidious "political correctness" has steamrolled the whole national discourse is that nobody's had the imagination to replace that evil concept with a sufficiently appealing alternative. "Racial politeness." That is PERFECT. And long, long overdue.
It makes me think of Dr. Laura, whom I listened to years ago, and one of her big themes when people called in whose relatives/co-workers were driving them crazy, was "You don't have to like them; you only have to be polite." Say what you want about Dr. Laura (I quit listening to her), but I have found that bit of advice to stand the test of personal experience.
Spread it far and wide, people: RACIAL POLITENESS.

I think there is a little bit of "dirty conservative" in everyone. Everyone is complex and has in their make up in their thinking all their experiences that have gone before and their frame of reference. It's more about how we communicate and what we learn through that communication which may start to set the "thinking person group" apart from the "herd group". I think the separation is beginning.
Posted by: curious at August 13, 2010 10:53 AM (p302b)
when people who say "one of my own kind" and and mean race are not treated with deference as for example, Shirley Sherrod and Sotomayor were treated, then and only then will I listen to lectures about racial harmony from groups that use that same language to describe their particular minority group today ...
To be clear I don't think of "my kind" as white or male and never will. In general terms I am not defined by my race or gender nor do I expect to be treated a particular way because of those "traits".
But today, because 200 years ago white men enslaved blacks I am constantly reminded that "my kind" was once slave owners. Check, I get it. In the past there were white male slave owners in America, I am a white male in America today thus I am stained with that historical fact and nothing I can say or do can erase that stain (not the historical fact) from the minds of some.

Because the Oakland teachers only wanted Ebonics recognized as equivalent to standard English so that they could instantly get credit for improving test scores in their classrooms. They wouldn't have had to keep struggling to teach standard English and could have claimed that students fluent in the "Ebonics" dialect were fully up to grade level.
And then those teachers would have felt absolutely no compunction or pangs of guilt for sending their students out into the world without the ability to read, write or speak standard English. So what if those young adults couldn't ever find a decent-paying legitimate job? Not the teachers' problem.

Good post, Ace. And yes, we've noticed you getting just a little testy about the comments lately. But this is your place, we respect that, mostly.
If there really are 100 readers for every comment, then you really do have something to be proud of. I haven't been anywhere else where the comments are as thought-provoking and informative as here. I call this blog "mental Wheaties" for a very good reason.
I was raised in Alabama during the Wallace era so I've seen racism and bigotry all close up and personal like. I got my little ass forcibly dragged away from water fountains, too, when it was hotter than hell and all I wanted was a drink. That kind of shit cut both ways, but you'd never know it from listening to the professional race hustlers like Wright, Jackson, Holder, and all the others.
In my other life as a musician, you won't find racism in my genre, the blues. Either you can play or you can't. If you get a reputation for being a bigot, regardless of your race, I can guarantee that you won't be getting many gigs. And rightfully so. This bullshit of judging someone solely on the color of their skin automatically reduces your IQ down into the low eighties, max. Anyone who thinks that way just isn't thinking, period. Those of us who aren't racist, and there are quite a few who don't share my skin color, once had great fun mocking racists.
But that was then. This administration has done more to set race relations back 50 years than any other single thing I can point to. It truly sickens me that we were almost to the point of race becoming a non-issue, only to have it dreged up from the past in order to be used as a political weapon by those who clearly don't like our country and want it to be fundamentally transformed into someplace that is unrecognizable to us.

Anyway, I hear you on the race stuff. I hate it when fellow conservatives vent on this issue. Every society has taboo areas: you go there, you pay. Race is a taboo area. Eric Holder can whine all he wants about how cowardly we are but he's a disingenuous ass. We don't and shouldn't talk about race because it has been roped off as a toxic waste dump for intellectual discussion. Guys like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton did the roping off and they're the only ones who can open it back up. White people cannot and should not try.

Rule of thumb: if the same comment (or same tone) about your own group would kinda sorta tick you off, it will probably do the same when leveled at other people
Sometimes I think some people need to do a better job of qualifying some of their statements -- some of those comments do come across as very rude and bigoted (and not in a naughty but nice, fun n dirty kind of way). I realize that sometimes things slip, and hell, everyone is a bit of a bigot -- but you can at least try not to be, or admit that you are and try to not be.
I think the arguement "well, "they" do it to us" is a cop out -- being pissed at people for being racist is fine, because it's wrong (just like it's ok to be nasty with islamofascists -- they're assholes; they deserve to be given the stinkeye), but being rude and bigoted at a whole group of people because somebody from that group does it to your group? Isn't that two wrongs?

Booker T. Washington's point exactly. Up from Slavery, Ch. X:
My experience is that there is something in human nature which always makes an individual recognize and reward merit, no matter under what colour of skin merit is found. I have found, too, that it is the visible, the tangible, that goes a long ways in softening prejudices. The actual sight of a first-class house that a Negro has built is ten times more potent than pages of discussion about a house that he ought to build, or perhaps could build.
The same principle of industrial education has been carried out in the building of our own wagons, carts, and buggies, from the first. We now own and use on our farm and about the school dozens of these vehicles, and every one of them has been built by the hands of the students. Aside from this, we help supply the local market with these vehicles. The supplying of them to the people in the community has had the same effect as the supplying of bricks, and the man who learns at Tuskegee to build and repair wagons and carts is regarded as a benefactor by both races in the community where he goes. The people with whom he lives and works are going to think twice before they part with such a man.
The individual who can do something that the world wants done will, in the end, make his way regardless of his race. One man may go into a community prepared to supply the people there with an analysis of Greek sentences. The community may not at that time be prepared for, or feel the need of, Greek analysis, but it may feel its need of bricks and houses and wagons. If the man can supply the need for those, then, it will lead eventually to a demand for the first product, and with the demand will come the ability to appreciate it and to profit by it.

Thoughtful post ace. I come here several times a day, enjoy the comments (for the most part) and usually leave a little more enlightened. The morons and moronettes here are extremely bright, funny people. There will always be some people that will post things I find offensive (like the gay stuff). Don't get me wrong some of it's funny, but some of it just isn't. I usually just write that person off and try not to let it bother me. I don't know how many black readers you have here, or gay ones either but if I steered a gay person to this site (which I have) and they saw some of the comments, they would be turned off by it. But then again, maybe they should try having a little thicker skin. There's always going to be people who don't like gays or are uncomfortable around them. There's always going to be racism (not saying there is HERE). Just a fact of life.

I've been thinking about that a lot recently. Good post on the spectrum of opinion in question. Reminds me of a passage from Death of the Netherlands (samizdat, banned and burned by the Dutch government).
There was real institutional and de jure racism based on the 'science!' of the day. After 1964 that's mostly history and examples are crushed with legal process. Science, through genetics and anthropology, no longer recognizes race as types of people or creates the infamous heirarchies of the Ninteenth Century.
Fast forward to today. Opposing 'ameloriative' (some pigs are more ameliorated than others) racial discrimination in the form of affirmative action -- favoring equal treatment for everyone -- opens you up to a charge of racism.
As the Left has lost actual racists to fight they've moved on Quixotically, Charles Johnsony?, to finding racists behind every bush. And then quietly moved on to racial balkanization and various types of unequal justice (cultural defense, segregated dorms, special rights for Muslims, always assigning race on every form...) themselves.

Rule of thumb: if the same comment (or same tone) about your own group would kinda sorta tick you off, it will probably do the same when leveled at other people
Maybe. You know, following 2 simple rules would clean up about 75% of the racial stuff that I see on AOSHQ:
1). Don't ever use the N-word, unless you can prove you're Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, or any rapper pre-1995, when rap was REAL (and good luck proving you're Richard Pryor).
2). Do not refer to Michele Obama as a 'wookie'. She's not hairy enough to be a wookie, so it's a dumb nickname to start with. Aunt Esther is also a no-no. I like my term - Sexy Arms - because it pokes fun at both her and the media that created the myth of her sexy arms, and it's non-racial. Angelina Jolie also has sexy arms. It's a term that transends color. Try it.

Ace,
I have to disagree on one point - do you really believe that people are coming here who have not made up their minds about their political leanings? That can be persuaded to vote republican or for conservatives?
I doubt that. My guess is that 99.8% of the people who come to this site are either already in the choir (i.e., righties who already vote and are politically engaged) or come here to throw stones at the choir (lefties who already vote and are politically engaged).
Posted by: Monkeytoe
Going to have to disagree with you on this one. I have personally sent the link out to plenty of liberals and indi's to this website. People just like me that just havent found the access to the information they are craving. And I know if i send the link out, there are others on this blog who are, as ace says, ready to chew glass to get the word out to win in November. IMHO posting racist comments and firing back at those comments/commenters just perpetuates the cycle. Like getting made fun of in grade school, i learned at a young age (as a ginger kid named Jack) that not responding to the critisism and "jokes" of others made them lose interest in even saying them. Now can this work on a national level? Im guessing its a slim to none chance. But on a blog like this, i would say it has a better shot.

I was on an escalator in Nordstrom's with two black dudes who kept calling each other the n word incessantly. I finally turned around and asked them to stop using the word since they were making me and everyone else on the escalator uncomfortable. They were shocked that I would do that but everyone else on the escalator seemed to agree via body language and shaking of heads. The conversation that ensued mostly centered around how a tiny little white chick like me would dare to take to two really really tall white dudes that way...like essentially 'are you a black belt or something not being afraid to talk to us like that"...bottom line, they stopped with the n word and were all of a sudden very nice and respectful with me. That's just not usually my nature but there were lots of kids who could hear them and I thought it was just plain wrong, so I spoke up.

When it first hit the cablewaves, the new police drama Memphis Beat was reviewed by someone (whose name escapes me) over at PJ Media. The reviewer was somewhat surprised at all the race-neutral dialogue. I chimed in that, in most parts of the country, and definitely down here where I live, that surprisingly race-neutral dialogue is the norm, not the exception.
Just as it should be, IMHO.

The M&Ms generally get the balance right, but once in a while, the line gets crossed. Not surprising - in the midst of the fun, it's easy to go too far (I should know - I seem to do it far to often among my colleagues). And of course, Morons have widely differing levels of tact and sensitivity (did I REALLY use Morons and sensitivity in the same sentence?).
Race is a hot potato - I should know, since I taught for a few years at a Historically Black College. I was amazed at the little unexpected differences in the students' (about 98% black) cultural experiences relative to mine. Some of it is generational (I'm closer to codgerhood than not), but I found a lot of minorities that are looking for any excuse to be offended (and they'll almost always find it). My fellow "minority whites" at the college were constantly self-censoring.
Keep up the good work.
As an aside, it was the jokes about Laura's Hump that kept me initially coming back to AOS.

Not really. Chewie was always arguing with Harrison Ford Also, from wikipedia:
Adult Wookiees are typically taller than most humans, averaging 2.1 meters (6'11").[2] They possess enormous strength; Solo states that his friend Chewbacca can pull a man's arms out of their sockets if angered. Wookiees have a keen sense of smell, are fully covered with a thick coat of hair, have good hand-eye coordination andare shown to be excellent marksmen. Chewbacca is shown in such diverse planets and moons as Hoth, Tatooine and Endor, never requiring any type of environmental protective clothing. Wookiees have a lifespan of several hundred years.[

Further, let us also be even-handed with the enforcement of the issue -- if it's wrong to denigrate black people at a racist level then it is also wrong to denigrate any other skin color, including white morons like myself.

That's why my whole life I have sought to find common ground with liberals, something on which we could agree so that we could get along. By now, however, I've learned that you can't get along with someone who doesn't want to. You can only hate them back. In fact, you must hate them as a matter of self-defense.

> tempter-tantrums as somehow useful to the cause.
He may not have said it perfectly but I didn't take that message from #131 at all. It is better if you stand clearly FOR something, even with people who disagree with it. And the Rs usually don't stand for anything, at best we muster a general opposition to the Ds but that isn't a position. That a strong Alpha Male confidence works on a level below conscious thought, where reason doesn't go.
And he was spot on that the two times in recent memory when the Republicans made strong gains were the two times the average voter knew EXACTLY what the party stood for and intended to do. Reagan had been talking about his views for years, everyone knew what he stood for and intended to do if elected. Some liked it, some hated it but everyone was clear on what they were voting for. And that while Reagan might compromise for tactical reasons or pick which fights to have, his beliefs were his beliefs and they weren't going to change regardless of popularity or political fortune.
Same for Newt & the Contract in 1994. They promised votes on a list of issues and votes were held. Some won, some lost but they did what they said they would do. The problems came later when too many of the newly elected congresscritters went native.
If the bulk of the candidates for office in this cycle could come together and state plainly, clearly and confidently what they believed and intended to accomplish; that the power of attraction combined with the existing repulsion against the current misrule of the Dems would be game changing. It would be the difference between winning an unusable (other than absorbing all the blame for everything that is wrong in 2012) bare majority in the House to winning a governing majority in the House and taking the Senate.
And part of that attraction would be rational, people reading the positions and arguments and deciding they are for it and an equal measure would be irrational reaction to the projection of confidence the act would entail. People want strong leaders, not politicians and within limits a portion of the population will vote for a strong alpha leader they disagree with over a beta they agree with on policy. This primitive reaction can be used for good or ill, but used it will be.

That "... there goes that 'guy' with the two assholes" joke just doesn't hit as hard as other versions. Sad, but it simply loses that shocking edge that triggers the forbidden (wink wink, ha ha funnier cuz we shared a bad word) laugh. Marginalizing people is just plain foolish. You miss out on getting to know really cool people. I miss Dave Chappelle's show. In re: to Ace's topic here, his blind kkk character was thought provoking and funny. I think he was making progress as far as anyone having a right to use "dirty words" to make a simple fucking joke. He managed to take it to a deeper social level while making racists look like the ignorant kool-aid drinking dumfucks they are. Hate and ignorance is one thing, but just because some dumbass sticks his gum under the desk, no one can chew gum in class anymore... especially not white guys! I know I won't change society's race issues, so I stay clear of those jokes these days. Last time I said one, I felt kinda stupid. I never ever ever said them the way fuck wad Michael Richards did, but that opened my eyes. Don't want to even have a chance of being grouped in with that dickhead. I can go without using THAT word, NBD. it simply isn't worth it. However, I do kinda resent anyone roundabout claiming ownership of language, though. So, why is cunt soooooo horrible versus bitch or whore or whatever, anyway? It sure gets a chick fired up for some reason. And it really doesn't stand a chance of marginalizing people, does it? Or does using that one make me a sexist?
Hope I didn't come off as anything but human here.

"I have to disagree on one point - do you really believe that people are coming here who have not made up their minds about their political leanings? That can be persuaded to vote republican or for conservatives?"
I'll defer to Ace on this since he has the best idea of the demographics of his site, but I do see this site as a recruiting tool. I came here (I read a comment recommending it by Vic a couple of years ago) looking for some dialogue and good commentary, and was amazed at the high caliber of the posts by Ace and the co-bloggers.
It is a site I can recommend to squish friends (there is no possibility of converting true liberals) and say, "Look, if you want to get a feel for what conservatives really think, not what the media tells you conservatives think, check this place out. I'll be very surprised if you give it a chance, you don't have some 'Gee, I never saw THOSE facts and stats, or thought about it that way' moments".
I enjoy the wild and crazy side and the sock puppets, they are part of the pulse of this site and make it what it is. But for me personally, the real power of the site and the part I enjoy most are the longer, thoughtful essays like the one above, and the ensuing dialogue. And I do sometimes read comments that make me cringe (see comment 6 above). They will do nothing to persuade anyone to take an honest look at our side of the aisle; but they do have the ability to negate much of the hard work done in the posts, to set a lousy tone for the good (including the snark) comments, and to turn off people, who, given half a chance, might become morons.

But - how many times of hearing "black...black...black...black..." is too many times? I couldn't care less what color Obama is - I hate his policies and his ideology, and I would feel the same way if he were my own lily-white brother. And I'm tired of being accused of being racist for feeling that way. Socialism is bullshit, and packaging it as the "cure" for racism doesn't make it any less bullshit.

It's true that clean conservative are no fun. I like fun!
Now before I check out this thread, coupla things: most black kids who grow up in the inner city DO NOT learn the kumbaya that white kids apparently learn--that's confirms several of the premises my "Herding" series.
And, yes, the military drains that out of many of us. Many; not most. Onward...

So, there are plenty of reasons not to write racist crap, but concern for people who are pissing their day away online instead of doing their fucking job is a piss-poor reason.
And don't give me "well I'm on a break"- go to the break room, get on your personal laptop and browse away. There is NEVER a good reason to be fucking around online on a work computer. I work in an online industry. I spend a lot of time online. I don't surf around the internet on my boss's computer, and I don't do it on his time, and anyone who does is a fuckwit who DESERVES to get fired, regardless of what he's looking at, racist or otherwise.
So just can that argument, sporty.

Prior had that rare ability to make fun of everyone and make it come out in a harmless way. He would take away anger and replace it with laughter. At the end of a Prior show blacks and whites would leave closer together, always.
In the right hands poking fun at people can be a good thing.
Bob Hope could do this also, in a different way. We have almost lost the stand-up comedians of yesterday who often provided a service beyond humor.
Fortunately Ace has the comedic touch and can broach tough topics in a light way - let's leave it to him.

Onward it is.
I agree that the military doesn't necessarily drain the racism out of it's members . At least it doesn't when it comes to adults, if my enlisted navy experience is any indication . The military brats seem to be a different story , however . My kid sister's best friend in grade school was the daughter of a black officer that lived across the street from us when my old man was stationed in Panama . It was hilarious watching them sing the Supremes together , steps and all .
Both our dad's went to Viet Nam the same year , 1967. Mine came home without a scratch , despite a year in the Iron Triangle during Tet . Sadly her's didn't.
RIP Maj. O----- . You were a fine man .

I'm sorta angry, but not in a way that I'm antagonistic toward minorities or women. I don't want anyone told that because of their gender or skin color they should be denied opportunity.Sorry if I didn't include the previous line in each and every one of my comments.

There is an entire generation out there who can be online and in a college lecture and shopping and still get an A and the blouse and calm down the friends. They are way more productive....way more than you can imagine...the tech sector got this right away....others not so much. It's multi tasking and it's here to stay since life is "complicated" I mean sure the check out person and the bank teller probably can't be online and do their job decently but a lot of folks can and do.
Posted by: curious at August 13, 2010 01:46 PM (p302b)
well, the next thing probably coming is the racism toward the white male...you know it don't you...it's coming...after all, after we get through with forming the PC line of who gets what and when and why, the poor little hard working put upon white male will finally be addressed....it will be all his fault, everything, all of it...lol

the problem with the new "normal" in multi-tasking is that when the lads and lasses implode it is quite spectacular.
Compartmentalization has its uses as well.

We all have prejudices, myself included, but most of mine were picked up over the course of my life as I observed how people behaved. There are certain groups I don't like, and that is unlikely to change unless those groups do. (Hint: it's not about skin color. Skin color or national origin is never an issue with me. It certainly is on the left.)
To be fair to these groups, their most visible proponents usually manage to tar the rest of them with the "I don't like those people" brush. Probably the vast majority are decent people. I blame the media for that misperception (if it is).

Ding! One more anecdote that demonstrates my premise that blacks are educated into holding racial grievance and how difficult it is to deprogram many of us.
My brother-in-law--my sister's husband--is a DOD cop, which means that he patrols a military base. He's also white. Every single time he stops a black person--military service members all--a complaint comes into the office about his "racism." The complainer always get the same letter to the affect that his wife and four children would be very surprised to find out that he hates black people. I was more ticked off than he was--I guess he's used to it now-- but that state of affairs was very illuminating to me.

And Ding! from the other side of the country. The view from here: When the topic of race or racism comes up, people always have strong opinions and always appear desperate to convince me that they're not racist. "Here," by the way, is a town that's 97% white and 99% non-Hispanic. Yet I'm surrounded by experts on race relations.

just out of curiosity I have recently left Columbia, SC a town dominated in three of its five major areas by a 75% African-American population with the remainder largely hispanics.....
do they "understand racism" when they tell an applicant, "nice resume but you're not getting hire until we have five more of our people"?
Something tells me even in the most vanilla town someone so open about their "preferences' that has a Federal contract would get sued in the mirror image of that.

There is a new normal coming, I think, where the race card is diminished, and thus, where we don't have to be so resentful and angry at each other. Which means we can sort of start just being politer, since minorities will, to put it bluntly, not have a PC gun pointed at our heads for much longer.
The greatest heroes in our country at this time are black conservatives. God bless the dozens of them who are actually running for Congress on the GOP ticket this election. Brave, smart, feisty men and women. "May their tribe increase!"

Sven --
True story: One of my relatives worked for a company that did a project using some government money. They had to submit a report about the diversity of the company and of the town benefitting from the project -- you know, to make sure the contractor reflected the racial makeup of the town. The comapny was very small so it would have been exempt from this, but they had to submit the report anyway. The racial composition of the town, from the Census Bureau's own data, was 100.0% white/non-Hispanic. The project went forward, but they had to expand the area so the report showed that some people in minority were being served.
I get the sense that race plays a part in hiring, even if it's unintentional. That's not to say latent racism is at work; it's just how it is. Kids (late teens, early 20s) of minority groups seem to always work for a place that has a corporate office in a different town. Maybe the managers doing the hiring are under pressure to submit "good" data about its workforce. Maybe, too, that the independent store owners and restauranteurs are going to hire their own kids first, then their nieces and nephews, etc., which will reflect the racial makeup of the owners -- white and non-Hispanic -- so the non-white and Hispanic kids really don't have any other options for jobs. But I really don't know, and no one is going to say what's what out loud.
Posted by: FireHorse at August 13, 2010 03:24 PM (cQyWA)
But then I get into the comments, and the gay "jokes" aren't entirely funny or smile-cracking. They're just . . . hostile. Hostile, unwelcoming, not worth the effort to read.
There's definitely a line, and many bloggers are very good at tap-dancing right up to it without quite going over. However, their commenters often have a lot of trouble perceiving that same line, so they trample right over it.
Then you don't really want to read or participate anymore. I read, but I gave up on commenting a year or two ago. The bigotry was too much. There's music to those words, and if you're tone-deaf, it just won't work.

As a Catholic Christian who's totally into Theology of the Body, natural law and an orthodox view of Scripture, I find I have to do this all the time when dealing with issues around homosexuality--i.e., "How would I phrase this if I were talking to a gay friend?" The age old challenge of "speaking the truth in love."
Of course, there is the obvious difference from the race issue in that, even if one is born with a genetic predisposition toward same-sex attraction, one does make choices about their behavior--
whereas if you're born black, you're black, and if you're born white you're white.
Well, unless you're Michael Jackson.

Personally, I think some of the same hot buttons that get hit on race get hit around here on other issues, including profession (our Fed workers are touchy sometimes), family status (there was a near flame war between the non-breeders and breeders the other night), gender (how many times do I have to read what bitches women are?), religion (I'm lookin' at you, Mike Huckabee), and of course the infamous North and South flame wars, etc etc.
Each of us as individuals is responsible for how we live and how we treat others. Only we know if we are bigots or sexists or whatever. It seems to me that on any open forum like this, as soon as you start generalizing about people in the post - which I think is sort of what you did, ace - then the comments are going to take a "tone" that some find objectionable. So let's just not generalize unless there's polling data and it is of such high quality that there really seems to be a pattern there.

I take one exception to your otherwise excellent post. "Niggardly" is a word that is completely unrelated to race. It means "stingy" or "miserly." The fact that a city employee of the District of Columbia lost his job for using that word correctly in the context of describing cuts in city spending exposes a problem of people on a hair-trigger looking for racial offense and creating it out of their own ignorance of the English language.

Drawing general conclusions and detecting patterns from sparse data is a hard-wired part of how the human mind works. It's a survival strategy: the proto-human who learned how to group "red berries good, green berries bad" first gained a competitive advantage over his peers who didn't make such snap judgments -- and ended up dying from eating unripe berries.
Human beings are rotten judges of actual probabilities -- if we were, Las Vegas would still just be a watering hole on the road to California -- but that often helps us survive even when it offends or harms other human beings. The fact that most cab robbers are of a particular race doesn't mean that a random individual of that race is at all likely to be a cab robber, but cabbies make that error in assessing probability and think they are safer for not picking up people of that race. It's not really rational, but it's how the human mind works.

You're right, stuiec. I guess I was trying to say to ace - as delicately as possible - that if he doesn't want these sorts of uncomfortable threads, he shouldn't put up a post in which he attempts to generalize about a group based on anecdotal evidence. I think he kind of got the ball rolling (I did not read every comment so I'll accept his word for it about the "tone" being less than ideal - or at least accept that he found it that way), so I am surprised he was surprised by the results. (Again, I'm not passing judgment on the comment(er)s - I honestly didn't see bad comments, but I did not read them all.)

Two of your examples have nothing to do with blacks, though. Sambo isn't black, he's Indian, hence the fact that he's chased by tigers. The book The Story of Little Black Sambo was written by a Scot who had lived in India. The term "niggardly" has nothing to do with race. It's derived from a Swedish/Viking term.
Those two things *should* be the basis of a lot of jokes about race-obsessed America is. We find anti-black racism in stuff that has no connection whatsoever to blacks.

I get very bothered by things like, well, if there are a bunch of black teenagers on a subway car, I'm probably, 30% chance, in for a loud and misbehaved sort of ride, and 10% chance, in for some territorial fuck-with-the-white-people shit.
That has an emotional effect, which I try to fight, and try not to
just vent that kind of emotion. Discussing it in clinical terms? Yeah,
fine: Something needs to be said about the territorial payback
instincts that a lot of black teenagers are being indoctrinated with.

I have a very close black friend who is hysterically funny. We were all at a wedding recently and we were dancing and he was literally stepping all over my feet, not hard but hard enough. So as the dance was ending he leans over and whispers in my ear: "It is a great burden to bear, I'm the only black male on earth who can't dance, it's my dirty little secret"....I laughed so loud cause it was the funniest comment after you'd spent all that time stepping on my sandal clad toes...lol He then had a few more drinks and said he despises the myth that all blacks have rhythm since he apparently didn't get that either. It's the same kind of thing as "well you're Italian so you must have mafia in your family if you have money". sometimes stereotypes can make people feel inadequate and that is such a shame. Why can't we just view people as beautiful interesting flowers opening up to show you who they are and not assuming you know what is on the inside? It would truly be a better world, I think.
Posted by: curious at August 13, 2010 07:45 PM (p302b)
However, here's the problem that I see. Let's say CNN or the New York Times picked up on this essay of yours and did a story on it. How do you suppose they would report on it? I bet their headline would be something along the lines of "Leading conservative blogger pleads with readers not to spew racist venom as election draws near."
And other, even more leftist "news" outlets like MSNBC and Media Matters would probably run a headline like "Top conservative blogger admits to racial baggage and resentment, fears blacks in public places, and calls young blacks 'indoctrinated' and 'territorial.'"
You know it's true.
My point is this: The left will call us "racist" no matter what we do, or say, or believe. They do it simply because it is effective. No matter how PC you try to be, or how PC your commenters try to be, we will be called racists. And I think it's natural for people to become frustrated with the constant and never-ending smears and attacks from the leftist media and say, essentially: Fuck it, I might as well speak my mind as bluntly as possible because I'm going to be demonized anyway.
I understand your position. You want to have a professional career post-blogging and you don't want this blog to somehow become a hindrance to you achieving that goal. However, I would like for you to understand the position of a frustrated conservative commentator: If it's not acceptable to be politically incorrect in the unmoderated comments section of a notoriously profane conservative blog while posting under a pseudonym, then it's not acceptable anywhere. And if it's not acceptable anywhere, then we have just ceded our right to free speech to the left, without a fight, all because we were worried about someone's feelings. And that would be a damn shame.
That being said, it's your site, so it's your rules.

I am annoyed at black people who think that being black makes them special, makes them somehow different from a white person. Their demands for special treatment are especially ridiculous. What does it say about a person's belief in their own abilities when they demand to be treated as if they were somehow handicapped? What does it say about the leftists who are so keen to treat them as if they were?
I'm disgusted at black people who actively define themselves by the color of their skin and work to create a racial identity based on being the polar opposite of what they perceive the average white person to be. There is a hell of a lot that a trained psychiatrist could say about that nonsense. There are white people who do the same thing, more or less. They don't look at black people and then try to be the opposite of what they see, but they are careful not to adopt any traits that they do perceive as being "black." Leftists are especially bad about this. These same leftists also have no concept of what black culture is really like. They think that black people all live in inner-city slums. In truth only a small minority of blacks live in such places. Most black people live in rural areas in places like Mississippi.
Don't believe me?

I really do wish that the people of this great nation would realize that we're all Americans. What color we are or what part of the world our fore-bearers came from is irrelevant. What matters is that we are all part of this nation. In fact we ARE this nation. A nation isn't land, it is people. We're all in this together. There is no reason for us to be at odds with one another. Tribalism is bullshit. There is only one tribe: American. Everything else is either secondary or irrelevant.
