— DrewM I think I've made it pretty clear I'm not a real big fan of the whole Koran burning thing. What I'm even less of a fan of is government coercion of legitimate, if abhorrent speech.
FBI agents visited Thursday with a minister of a small Florida church that plans to burn the Quran on Sept. 11, as public safety became a paramount concern and President Barack Obama added his voice to the chorus of opposition....The FBI spent about a half hour talking with Jones, but church spokesman Wayne Sapp would not disclose what they discussed. Agents leaving the church wouldn't talk to an Associated Press reporter.
Jones said earlier this week that agents have visited him twice since he announced his plans in July, the last visit about two weeks ago.
Now, I suppose it's possible Jones is caught up in something else unrelated to the Koran burning plans that has the legitimate interest of the FBI. However given the nature of this story and the unprecedented involvement of government officials in this matter (more in a minute on that), I think AG Holder and/or President Obama need to come out right away and make it clear that federal law enforcement officers are not being used to intimidate Jones.
Jonah Goldberg made a great point last night on FNC's Special Report...a lot of people went nuts right after 9/11 when Ari Fleischer said, "all Americans that they need to watch what they say, watch what they do." (follow the link for Hitchens' take down of the faux hysteria). Now however it's the policy of this administration to have figures such as the head of the NATO mission in Afghanistan, the Secretary of State, the President of the United States of America weigh in on the wisdom of Americans exercising their First Amendment rights. The Secretary of Defense even called Jones to personally discuss the situation with him.
I've gone quite a bit over the last two days about the double standards employed by the left about Islam and the delicate sensibilities of Muslims who are peaceful unless you know, they aren't, but the idea the government is mobilizing to talk someone out of protesting and suddenly FBI agents show up is truly outrageous.
How about the Obama administration do it's damn job and protect Americans who do dumb things but are exercising their legal rights. That's why we have a government in the first place. Stop lecturing some kook in Florida about what they should and should not do and make it clear to everyone around the world, sensitive and extremest Muslims included, that we do and say what we want here in the US and if you have a problem with that, tough shit.
I hope Congressman Daryl Issa adds this to his list of things to investigate come January of next year.
Until it's clear that the FBI was there on unrelated matters, I'm not giving this administration the benefit of the doubt.
Update [Gabe]: Ann Coulter's column today is on FI-YA. As they say, read the whole thing.

Just look at all the fucking cockroaches that are fleeing the scene and also we are having another illustration of how peaceful those fucks in the religion of peace are.

An American president -- as opposed to the treasonous fuckweasel we now have -- might at most have suggested that Koran-burning is dumb. "Pastor" Jones has a right, but it's not a hot idea (so to speak).
Said patriotic president would also mention to slimeball Rauf that he has a right to want to build the GZ mosque, but it's not a hot idea.
I'm with Herr M. I don't like the idea of putting korans to the torch, but it's beginning to have a certain appeal. What bothers me is that the Mohammedan Mouthpiece will justify the "rage" of the Muzzies and tell us to STFU and let them run roughshod over us.

One is not like the other. These may not have been entirely innocuous but they were not intentional provocations and the level of resultant violence could be said to be unexpected. I cannot say the same for organizing a Koran burning.
Again, when do these animals need a provocation? If the pastor cancels the burning, will the Muzzies forgive our infidel ways? No, they'll find another illegitimate reason to murder us. America was (and still is) pretty damned tolerant of Islam before 9-11. Where did that get 2,997 innocent people?

For that matter, the guy who is supposed to be the very exemplar of the moderate Muslim is one of the ones lecturing us on what is and is not acceptable, all the while shoving the mosque in our faces and preening on how he will not back down.
I'm starting to sense a real backlash as per McCarthy's excellent column, "This Is Where We Begin To Say No."

I think the Koran burning is stupid because it's a cry for attention. I couldn't care less about its provocative aspects. If it offends moderate Muslims, hey, sorry about that, but (to me) not enough of them have come forth to condemn the radical elements in their religion. After 9-11, they sat on their hands and never opened their mouths. And because of that, if they burn the Korans, I won't lose much sleep over it.
But that's just me.

I've been there since around 2005. I realized our modernity made most people incapable of thinking enough like the enemy to see through their deceptions. The realization makes some people recoil into deep denial: Charles Johnson. Our attention span is too short to handle creeping sharia or stealth jihad. Soft modern people can't deal with steely suicidal fanatics wearing smiley faces when convenient. Not insane, fanaticial.
The bottom line to most people is retirement and benefits, not fighting for territory like a pit bull and martyrdom. That's old school, which Islam has in spades.

Any protest, by definition, is a cry for attention. That's why they're also called 'demonstrations'. And according to the beautiful people, burning symbols (flags, draft cards, bras) is a powerful, legitimate statement. Defacing/destroying religious symbols is also a legitimate statement and art in the bargain.
By the standards of the beautiful people, there is nothing wrong here. And to the anti-theists ( I do NOT mean athiests) this is something to be encouraged.
Wahoo.

Can we combine this with that idiotic day when everyone is supposed to shut off all their lights and yearn for the good ole days of living in darkness and squalor (for the sake of Gaia)? If we all BBQ pork or freshly hunted bambi over it we can go for the hat trick and piss off the militant vegetarians and anti-hunting types.

Now that O has continued to piss them off, as well as the moderate dems and the independents, if Hillary gets the nod, they will vote for her before they will vote GOP. If O is the candidate, they will either hold their noses and vote GOP or not vote at all.

General Petraeus (and Obammy and everyone else I've heard) condemns the book burning because it might endanger the lives of troops. Odumbass adds the "against American values" bullshit, because, you know, values unstated in the constitution have more value than the constitutional right of free speech.
Um... isn't protecting Americans (and thus their constitutional rights) the point of having a military? Is it now the point of the military and the president to tuck in their tails and play it safe at the expense of our constitution?
Exactly! Also, if our partnership with moderate Muslims is so fragile that this LITTLE incident sends them off on an American troop killing spree, it shows our entire military strategy is built on a foundation of sand.

I heard Kelly and OReilly offer a purported "distinction" between flag burning and bible burning, the latter having no point other than to give offense, not make a political statement. Kelly cited some case to that effect.
I found that singularly unpersuasive: if I want to shout to the world that as a man, not the POTUS, Barky is a complete asshole, is that actionable??
If I shouted out, "I hate the Pope and his Church", can the Church sue me?
If I shout out, "I hate the Pope and his Church, and this bible's binding is hideous and offends me. for all these reasoins I will burn the bible.", have I committed a crime?
I don't think so.
The FBI has no reason to advise people that they may commit a tort, so I have no idea what they were doing.

A lot of morons are wondering about the FBI visit and will Obama somehow order law enforcement to stop this. And people argue that this is protected free speech.
Well, it is protected, but it is going to be surpressed. This guy may burn a Koran, but he'll never be able to do it again, and no other group will be able to either.
How? Simple. The government(s) are going to civilly bankrupt anyone who does by charging them for the costs of security.
Just read the following comment buried deep in the article.
"We are sending a bill for services to the Dove World Outreach Center. We're tracking our costs," said city spokesman Bob Woods. "I'm sure the cost will be substantial."
This is it. This is how future Koran burnings will be prevented. When you get a bill for about a million dollars of police overtime and what-not, very quickly people will realize that the government will destroy them financially if they get out of line.
And all the while, the government will point out that you still have full 1st amendment rights. "Of course we aren't supressing free speech! We're just recouping taxpayer dollars."
Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they start saying that they're fiscal conservatives for doing so.
It's the old saying, all over again: Freedom of speech, just watch what you say.

The FBI was down there to talk about the death threats. From what I've read and watched this is procedure when someone or a institution such as a church (regardless of it's size) has received credible threats. Do the bloggers really think that they were dispatched to intimidate this guy into not burning a koran and not expect that to come out? Don't read conspiracy into everything or when the real abuse of power happens (as it's happend before with this administration) it will get lost in the noise.

I use my copy of the Koran as a coaster on the anniversary of 9/11. I set an alcoholic beverage on it after I toast the memory of the innocents murdered by Muslim terrorists. I've also been known to set a slice of pepperoni pizza on my copy of the Koran. Since I'm a 1) woman and 2) an infidel, that's probably just as bad as burning it.
And I can do it again and again and again. I've owned that copy of the Koran for 9 years, since I bought it for a buck at a used book shop.

"Tax exempt" status has nothing to do with anything.
In this case, a minister, not a church per se, is exercising its free speech rights. The minister pays taxes, though his situation as to what he pays and for what is a lot more complex than the rest of us.
But he is still a citizen, and still is deserving of Equal Protection under the law.
What the hell good would freedom of speech and religion be if the government can charge you to the eyeballs, or refuse to defend you, for exercising your rights?
Hypothetical: a synagogue receives threats against its rabbi and its members, requiring police protection. Someone burns down the synagogue, and the fire department has to come put out the fire.
should the town send the rabbi and his congregation a bill for the extra protective services the police gave, and the expenses of sending out the firemen?

However, if I deliberatly set fire to my home, having announced previously that I would do it, doesn't that change things? If you are charged with arson, most states will bill you for the cost of fighting the fire, as part of your sentence.

And just what fucking law is he breaking?.......................
maybe you think that burning the Koran is or should be illegal so as not to offend the goatfuckers...but it's not and it isn't going to be any time soon.

Pay attention. I stated that if you are going to burn your own building as a protest, then you will probably be billed by the fire dept.
Don't read anything else into it.

Nice slid job there., my bad, didn't know we were talking about buring his own building. All this time I thought this was about buruning the Koran.
If he wants to burn his church down he pays for it and gets a trip to prison.....the Koran....not so much.
Again, my bad.

Maybe he could just deep fry the Koran instead of burning it, you know, with a little breading on it, or maybe just sauté it a little bit?

"Next thing you'll tell me is that Phelps is also a upstanding man of god that we also should not ridicule like a low life scum deserves."
Ummm....you mean the Fred Phelps that has a law degree? Is being from Kansas sufficient to be considered a backwoods hick? What about the rest of flyover country, or is that just a label you stick on anyone you disagree with? I had no intention of telling you anything about Phelps, but if beating up a strawman makes you feel all better, have at it.
I will say that you're free to ridicule Phelps, and Jones, without fear of retaliation largely due to the efforts of a lot of stupid backwoods hicks who put their asses on the line to protect yours. At least it's been my experience that there's a disproportionate number of dumb country shitkickers in the military. If you want to lump them in with the likes of Phelps, thats on you.

"what if it were a mosque and an iman made a big public announcement that he was going to have a bible burning protest and continued to flame the fires and dared any infidel to do anything about it.
You think we have an obligation to provide that mosque security through our police force without them incurring at least some of the costs? "
******************************
I asked first, and I say again: if police forces are going to be allowed to pick and choose which Free Speech rights they will charge to protect, and which citizens they will protect, then we are in deep shit.
Should police forces be able to charge to protect a Gay Pride parade? An anti-abortion demonstration? How about a Tea Party gathering in Berkeley?
See where this winds up? "Free Speech for Me, but Not for Thee"

"However, if I deliberatly set fire to my home, having announced previously that I would do it, doesn't that change things? If you are charged with arson, most states will bill you for the cost of fighting the fire, as part of your sentence.
What I'm saying is that he is incurring the cost. Why not charge him for it?"
****************************************************
If you deliberately set fire to your own home, you are likely physically endangering the property and lives of others, and would wind up being charged with a crime such as reckless endangerment.
So your example fails, in that Jones isn't committing a crime or even threatening to; moreoever, the police are protecting him from those who would commit a crime against him or his property to punish him for asserting his rights.
But if you live in the middle of nowhere, own your home free and clear, and announce you're going to burn it down, why would the fire department have any reason to come put out the fire?

Yeah, I understand. But if this is a small town, and someone is causing lot's of police, fire protection without a permit, then why not charge them?
I don't disagree, and I can see your point. But if someone is, as I said, burning their own building, then why not charge them for it?
Meanwhile, I'm looking for my gasket...

Because fires have a tendency to spread. And where exactly is the middle of nowhere?

Second, Islam *IS* America's only official, protected religion. No other religion gets personal attention from the President, the Def. Secretary, Petraeus, etc. ISLAM is our official, government sanctioned and protected religion.
Third, ALL America MUST BOW DOWN to Islam and the Koran. All of it. Because it is, see above, our official protected religion, and Muslims world-wide and the President will come and punish you (Muslims with death) if you don't worship it.
Fourth, Muslims and the Muslim world live cheek-by-jowl with us. There is no escaping them. Modern two-way technology, the internet, allows obscure Florida Pastors, or some guy in Wyoming, or some guy in Georgia, and Fred Phelps, to burn Korans and EVERYONE, from Jakarta to Islamabad, to Cairo, to Kabul, to see and hear it. EVERYONE. And of course, Muslims burning bibles, Christians, and Churches, also is inescapable. Search on the internet and you will find it. Governments can no longer control simple, one-way mass communication.
Fifth, it has now begun.
Burning the Koran is the un-official, anti-elite, American rebel way to commemorate and memorialize 9/11, the murder of 3,000 Americans, by Muslims, for Islam, on that day. Jones may or may not burn it, but thousands of other Americans will. As an act of rebellion against our Official, State Sponsored and Protected Religion you all are ordered to worship by Muslims world-wide and Obama and the elites.
There is no "center." There is no moderation. There is no compromise. America will either be ruled by Sharia, bit by bit, as a slave nation to Islam, or it will destroy Islam. There is no fantasy any more of simply withrdrawing to fortress America. The internet alone means everything we do, from eating pork, to unveiled women, to booze, to having dogs as pets, to hell watching Football (the pigskin, get it?) means Muslims are outraged and will kill us until we adopt Sharia and Islam. The fight is eternal, and unavoidable.
Bow down to Islam. Or fight. And the first step in fighting, is burn the Koran. To memorialize the murder of 3,000 of our own, on 9/11, by Muslims, for Islam.

Let me get this straight. Islamic terrorist organizations and their supporters operate free and clear in this country. There are Jamaat al Furqa training camps in at least 17 states. They burn bibles and American flags. They use American internet servers to spread their terrorist jihad and inflammatory rhetoric. They issue fatwas from their mosques. They hoist signs during protests with "death to America" and "behead those who insult Islam" printed on them. But, the FBI doesn't see fit to take any of that as a threat and drop by for a friendly chat.
If you see everything that's going on in this country thanks to Obama and his autocratic thugs, and you're not angry, there's something wrong with that picture.

That night nike outlet there was a rude
interruption. The gramophone suddenly stopped playing; there was a scuttling among the
alcoves; two seedy figures in raincoats strode across the room and began questioning the
proprietress; a guard of military police stood at the street door. Raids of this kind, cheap nike shoes to round up bad characters, are
common enough in French Protectorates. It was the first time I had been caught in one. The
girls were made to stand along one wall while the detectives checked mbt shoes their medical certificates. Then two or three
soldiers stood to attention and gave a satisfactory account of themselves. Then I was asked
for my carte d’identité. By the capitulations the French police had little cheap high heels authority over British subjects, and
since the criminal class of Morocco mostly possessed Maltese papers, this immunity was good
ground for vexation. The detectives were surly fellows, African born. Even the sacred word
“tourist” failed to soften them. Where was my guide? cheap wigs Tourists did not visit the Moulay Abdullah
alone. Where was my passport? At my hotel. The Jamai Palace? No? Tourists did not stay at the
hotel I mentioned. Was I registered at the police headquarters? Yes. Very well, I must cheap football jerseyscome with them. In the morning I
should have the opportunity to identify myself. A hundred francs, no doubt, would have
established my respectability, but my money lay with my passport in the hotel. I did not cheap jordansrelish a night in gaol in company with
the paperless characters of the Moulay Abdullah. I told them I was a friend of the British
Consul. He would cheap women shoesvouch for me.
They grumbled that they had no time for special enquiries of that kind. The Chief would see
about it next morning. Then when I had despaired, they despaired too. There was clearly no
money coming for them. They had been in the profession long enough to know that jordan shoes cheap no lasting satisfaction results
from vexing British subjects. There was a police post in the quarter and they consented to
telephone from it. A few minutes later I was set at liberty with a curt reminder that it was
advisable to keep my passport accessible if I wanted to wander nfl jerseys china about the town at night.
I did not return to Fatima. Instead I set off for the bus stop, but the annoyances of the
night were not yet over. I was halted again at the gates and the women monster interrogation was repeated. I explained
that I had already satisfied their colleagues and been discharged. We re-enacted the scene,
with the fading hope of a tip as the recurring motive. Finally they, too, telephoned to the
Consulate and I was free to take my bus replica
sunglasses home.
They were still serving dinner at the hotel; the same game of billiards was in progress in the
bar; it was less than an hour since I went out. But that hour had been decisive; I was
finished with Fez; its privacy had been replica
oakley sunglasses violated. My weekly visit to the Consulate could never be repeated on
the same terms. Twice in twenty minutes the Consul had been called to the telephone to learn
that I was in the hands of the police in the Moulay Tiffany jewelry Abdullah; he would not, I thought, be
censorious or resentful; the vexation had been mild and the situation slightly absurd—nothing
more; but when we next met our relations would be changed. Till then they had been serenely
remote; we had talked of the news from Christian Louboutin shoes England and the Moorish antiquities. We had exposed the
bare minimum of ourselves; now a sudden, mutually unwelcome confidence had been forced. The
bitterness lay, not in the Consul knowing the fact of my private recreations, but in his
knowing that I knew he knew. It was a salient in the defensive line between us that could only
be made safe by a wide rectification of frontier or by a complete evacuation. I had no
friendly fake watches territory into which to
withdraw. I was deployed on the dunes between the sea and the foothills. The transports riding
at anchor were my sole lines of support.
