— DrewM The SOBs at WikiLeaks are back and along with their willing accomplices in the media they are revealing internal State Department communications. So far most of the stuff seems likely to cause some mild embarrassment and discomfort.
Gaming out an eventual collapse of North Korea: American and South Korean officials have discussed the prospects for a unified Korea, should the North’s economic troubles and political transition lead the state to implode. The South Koreans even considered commercial inducements to China, according to the American ambassador to Seoul. She told Washington in February that South Korean officials believe that the right business deals would “help salve” China’s “concerns about living with a reunified Korea” that is in a “benign alliance” with the United States.Bargaining to empty the Guantánamo Bay prison: When American diplomats pressed other countries to resettle detainees, they became reluctant players in a State Department version of “Let’s Make a Deal.” Slovenia was told to take a prisoner if it wanted to meet with President Obama, while the island nation of Kiribati was offered incentives worth millions of dollars to take in a group of detainees, cables from diplomats recounted. The Americans, meanwhile, suggested that accepting more prisoners would be “a low-cost way for Belgium to attain prominence in Europe.”
...
As he left Zimbabwe in 2007 after three years as ambassador, Christopher W. Dell wrote a sardonic account of Robert Mugabe, that country’s aging and erratic leader. The cable called Mr. Mugabe “a brilliant tactician” but mocked “his deep ignorance on economic issues (coupled with the belief that his 18 doctorates give him the authority to suspend the laws of economics).”
Hopefully Obama will read that last report, he might learn something.
It'll take awhile to parse all of this out as various WikiLeaks media 'partners' (in crime), roll out their stories.
Der Spiegel has a preview of their planned stories, including the revelation that the US was apparently getting some inside information as Germany built their coalition government and some unflattering assessments of the new German Foreign Minister.
Mostly they seem really surprised that the US isn't thrilled with Turkey's lurch towards Islamic fundamentalism.
Mostly it seems this is a story about they hyper-empowerment of individuals and small groups in the modern world. How in the world does an Army PFC get access to this material. Why can't the US government shut down a cartoonish 'international man of mystery' like Julian Assange?
It seems the most likely danger is that individuals will be afraid to share information with US officials out of fear that they will show up in the next batch of WikiLeaks. In some parts of the world that will get you dead right quick. Of course Assange doesn't care about that.
Personally, I think it would be kind of fun if Assange could get a hold of some European or Asian government files and see what they think about Obama and Madame Clinton.
Added: Via Andy Levy....Blake Hounshell, the Managing Editor of Foreign Policy magazine is "live tweeting" as he reads through the cables. He's already found some interesting nuggets.

How in the world does and an Army PFC get access to this material.
What makes you think this stuff is coming from an American, much less one single American?
1. It might be coming from multiple American sources. Now that they have the cover of previous leaks (or other leakers), they are less likely to be singled out as a source.
2. It might be coming from within the security/foreign affairs aparatus of our erstwhile allies - seeking to manipulate us using the same type of cover as noted in item #1. Which might explain why Assange either does not have similar dirt on the Euroweenies, or is choosing not to run any of it.
Either way the US needs to squash this. The best way would be to have something profoundly horrible happen to someone closely associated with Assange.

The explanation that presumes the least amount of unknown things is that he doesn't have any dirt State can't feed him. Strategically, they should be giving him all kinds of shit from everywhere and burying what they want leaked among that shit. But they don't have that shit. They only have their own shit.

"How in the world does and [sic] an Army PFC get access to this material."
Okay, HOW DOES an Army PFC get access to this material? Particularly, given his location ... someone or some group in Washington, or several consulates, makes more sense. Or am I mistaken, and such material, including diplomatic communiques, routinely circulates through the intelligence community, and at levels where a not heavily cleared PFC can get it?
Perhaps AssRange simply made some coordination calls, and Manning either was given all files or agreed to take credit for having all files and giving them to AssRange.
The "credit" part that bothers me; as a side observation, I suspect that Manning may not have realized that he was going to take credit for very many more files (or that there WERE additinal files than the ones he provided).
But having to take "credit" ... as previously asked: are there others, how many, who are they, where are they and specifically what are their jobs?
Manning is screwed; he likely knows no names, other than AssRange ...
I guess everyone has known, since at least the early 70's, that the State Department and Diplomatic Corps (a small difference) could not and cannot be trusted to even look out for American interests.
To some degree, the possibility of "others" in this leak suggests an attempt to undermine the US Government.

Don't buy into that myth promulgated by the MFM about the PP case. SCOTUS did not rule that people could leak secret documents with impunity, or even that newspapers could publish them with impunity.
What they said was that government could not pre-censor publishing them. If they wanted to block a newspaper from publishing a document they had to seek a court order and they had to show that the publishing of the document would be a clear and present danger to the national security.
Also, the leaker can be prosecuted as part of the security contract they sign as a condition of getting a clearance. The newspaper can be prosecuted for publishing the document IF the government can show in in court that the published article resulted in real harm to the government.
Ironically the PP did result in real harm and the deaths of several people who had helped the U.S. spy on other countries.
The government though failed to prosecute because they had already lost the case against Daniel Elsberg due to illegal spying on him.
Most of the time the government will not prosecute because doing so will most likely result in divulging even more classified info. Look at what happened in the NYC terror trial the government lost.

Seems unlikely. That would be dangerous to his health. It would also be dangerous to the health of anyone who wanted to send documents to the wikileaks outfit. Whatever the case, I still don't get the impression that Assange is a disinterested neutral seeker of truth.

Regarding the previous incident: What in the hell was a PFC doing with access to almost any of that? In that MOS, the rank of PFC indicates a year or less of experience and NO track record of reliability to speak of. The only way someone at that rank should have access to anything remotely sensitive should be when everyone above him is dead. Period. Which still doesn't take into account the progressive/marxist moles that infest every level of our intel apparatus. Putting Osama bin Laden in charge of our security would only be a downgrade in degree, not in kind.

If the government has so little in the way of legal recourse against the leakers of sensitive information, then what's the point of classifying documents at all?
I think I get it that the point of the PP was to strip Washington of the ability to hide info just by saying "National Security!" three times and clicking their heels together, particularly after Watergate. But hasn't the pendulum swung back a bit too far? It seems that nothing is sacred if these so-called classified documents can be made public with little to no effect upon the leakers.
There are still large chunks of this that I don't understand.
*sigh* I miss the old days when laws were laws and meant what they said.

I hate to say it, but security in almost any government body is probably lax about certain things. "Hey, I forgot to check my mail and I'm logged out. Can you give me your password?" "Hm, I think I'll go get a sandwich. No need to log out, I'll only be gone for a minute or two." "Hi, we're conducting a security test on the system--can we use your ID and password for testing?"

The wiki-leaks are interesting but beyond the mere fact of interest they reveal nothing in terms of American policy that warrants contravention of keeping military and diplomatic secrets secret. The goverment should be able to transmit contemporaneously diplomatic accounts and assessments without the fear of some bastard dumping such on the "open market" if you will when the subject matter would fetch all of a $2 bill at a Vegas Diplomatic Voyeur convention.
The focus should be on prosecuting these bastards. Unless, the general public is of concern what type of hair tonic Italy's prime minster prefers or how Libya's full birded colonel likes his traveling "nurses."

I don't think you have to wonder. He's going to release it anyways, just not immediately. Arrest him and everyone associated with that website. When stuff is released track down the ones that did that and arrest them too. Eventually you'll get everyone involved or there will be no one else willing to be arrested for espionage and releasing classified documents. Don't let the little shits like him think he has the power or we're afraid of what he might do. He's just another powertripping narcissist like Obama.

The truth is that international law is a bitch and we dont have half as much on him as people assume. He's a shifty little fucker with no allegiance to the US.
Interpol has an arrest warrant for rape and molestation charges. But he will be an international hero for bating the US. He'll be protected everywhere.

137 Actually no...Pvt. Asspile had roughly the same MOS as some people in my family have had -- it involves a pretty high security clearance even for a private; they would have access to this sort of stuff. Somebody didn't perform a very good background check on Bradley and/or somebody did not do a good enough job of training Bradley (however, somebody from my family is connected to people who went through AIT with him -- they were as suprised as anyone; either Bradley didn't start out warped, or he hid it well-- I'm going with the former, at least that's my hunch).
Nevertheless, he now deserves a long drop from a short rope.

195 I'm saying either the person who did the initial background check on him (so he could get into that MOS, even go to AIT) did not do a thorough job, or Manning was a really, really good actor (with not only the checker, but employers, family, neighbors, friends, teachers), or something happened while he was in (people can be bribed, blackmailed, seduced, deluded and led astray in a lot of different ways -- even people with more clearances, more access to pertinent info, and more experience with this particular game than Manning).
In which case, whoever trained Manning and/or was in charge of him may have pucked up. It could be a case of all of the above -- I don't know.

If Obama was going to ditch Biden and not leave the Vice-Presidency vacant with Boehner immediately following him in the order of succession, he'd have to do it now, during the lame-duck session, not after the new Congress takes office. Under the 25th Amendment, a vacancy in the Vice-Presidency is filled by presidential appointment requiring confirmation by BOTH houses, not just the Senate like other nominations.
Moreover, it's pretty well-known that Biden actually can't stand Obama. If he was asked to resign, he'd probably say no. And unlike any other federal executive official, the VP doesn't serve at the pleasure of the President: Barry can't "fire" him.
"He will pick his successor to join him on the 2012 ticket, who I suspect will be a general, possibly Petraeus."
A general maybe, but Petraeus I seriously doubt. He pretty much dismisses any suggestion of interest in political office. He's not Wesley Clark, for which we should consider ourselves infinitely grateful on a daily basis.

"He's been charged with a couple of things, but I don't see "treasonous acts" in there. Maybe they will rethink the charges now."
Treason as such is not defined in the UCMJ, so it would seem he'd have to be charged in civilian court. You see Eric Holder's DOJ doing that?
However, Article 104 of the UCMJ, "Aiding the Enemy," is pretty closely analogous to treason and carries a possible death sentence. Article 106a, which covers espionage, is likewise a capital offense. Every single document Manning provided could be charge as a separate espionage count, possibly numbering in the hundreds or even thousands.

Damn! Can we borrow that dude? I would be in favor of a Constitutional amendment making him -- and him alone, BTW -- the only non-American eligible to be president!
Shit, if he could keep that attitude going long enough to dismantle all the bogus bullshit our current regime (and, sadly, past administrations) have stuck us with, I'd favor a lifetime term for him.

201 Really?
Sorry for the snark, but I'm not the one asking why a mil intell analyst would have access to the secret squirrel stuff.
Thing of it is: Manning was a bit more than a "clerk", and honestly, by griping about this some of you are inadvertently slamming some young people who are not treasonous and do a very fine job. I would take the time to remind you that we have diplomats, Pentagon employees, embassy Marines, and a host of other people who shouldn't have given away secure information (or given away how to access it)...and did anyway. It sucks, but it does happen. People are very easily played out; you just have to find their weak spot.
Unfortunately for Manning, he appears to have been a bit of an idiot -- in the sense that those who lack circumspection and suspension of belief are idiots -- which is of course very tragic for Manning and his family. However, being an idiot and a patsy is not a defense of treasonous acts, so he needs to hang, or be shot -- either one.

If any of these documents are truly classified, then their unauthorized disclosure is a crime. Their disclosure does not unclassify them. Therefore, any medium those documents pass through is subject to classification and confiscation by law enforcement authorities. The printing presses of the NYT, its web servers housing any classified information, and any and all other computers, disk drives, thumb drives, CD/ROMS, printers, monitors, keyboards, mice, webcams, USB devices, and any peripheral devices of any kind attached to the production stream for publication of these documents, is classified. Anybody handling these documents or involved in the editorial decisions to publish them is subject to fines and imprisment at Leavenworth on grounds ranging from espionage to high treason. Ditto for Wikileaks most obviously, and every other entity that published classified data.
When are the feds going to grow a pair? They sure as hell aren't shy about pushing "the little people" around. It's about damn time they pushed back against the leftist grandees. Hard.
But of course they won't. If Republican administrations won't do it, what makes anyone think a bunch of Marxists will? Hell, I bet you have some asshats on Pennsylvania Avenue high-fiving each other right now.

<a href="http://tinyurl.com/clintonwikifolly">"Most seriously for Washington, they also showed the U.S. had ordered a spying operation on diplomats at the United Nations, including British officials, in apparent breach of international law.
U.S. staff in embassies around the world were ordered by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to obtain frequent flyer numbers, credit card details and even iris scans, fingerprints and DNA of foreign officials"</a>
Hillary Clinton on signed orders violating International Law? Remember when Democrats cared about undermining the USA's image and status in the World? Remember when they were concerned with alienating Allies and Enemies alike?
Here the old Sniper Dodger, the one who illegally obtained FBI Files as a First Lady, foolishly signed and transmitted these orders around the Globe. Even if someone was thinking this is a good move, spying on Diplomats, it is a really bad idea to have it known.
The Democratic Partisan folly is a disaster. Hillary Rodham is a joke of a Secretary of State, and it just got much, much, much, much worse. Spying on British Subjects as well? Seeking DNA? Orwellian nightmare on display for the entire World. Hillary exposed as a creepy Authoritarian Swindler yet again. Thanks 'smart power'! Great job.
