— Gabriel Malor And so the most-watched sporting event in television history comes to an end. Holland takes on the Spanish national team at 11:00am Pacific on ABC.

Neither team has won a World Cup championship and the two teams have only met nine times in history. (They're tied at 4-4 with one draw.)
In this tournament they've had very different styles so far. The Netherlands have been playing a defensive game, taking few shots, but making them. The Spanish have been doing the opposite, batting the ball every which way and hammering the goal repeatedly.
Also at stake is the Golden Boot award for top goal scorer. The Netherlands' Wesley Sneijder and Spain's David Villa are both contenders, though they're tied for the moment with Thomas Müller of Germany.
So, who to root for? I'm pulling for Spain, as I said I would back when the Cup got going. Paul the Octopus also says Spain's going to win, despite the death threats. However, the canny cephalopod cannot be said to be unbiased. After Germany's loss in the semifinal, Spain offered asylum to keep angry Germans from eating the poor fellow.
As for Holland, um...they wear orange. So, they have that going for them.

The best thing about the tournament is the commentary. The ebb-and-flow of the game lends itself to very nice turns of phrases and witty observations.
Unlike, say - He's at the 30 the 20, the 10, the 5 ... TOUCHDOWN.
American football - better sport, much worse commentators
Similarly, the Tour de France is ... dumb. The only thing that makes the Tour de France watchable are the commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen, who are wonderful.

Much of islamic tradition became deeply embedded into Spanish culture with their occupation and that contributed a great deal to the fact that the Spanish were shitty colonizers and that just about all of the ex-Spanish colonies have been little but anti-capitalist shitholes of instability.

Soccer plays on a 110-yard wide field with 10 players running for 90 minutes. They can only have three subs, and only halftime for a beak. Most midfielders run about 5-7 miles during an average game.
Baseball has three to six breaks between every batter. Breaks for innings. Breaks for pitchers. People like John Kruk are considered "athletes." Players usually run only 90 feet at a time - unless there is an extra base hit. The pitchers pay once every week.
And to be honest, there is more contact in soccer than there ever is for baseball. Although the refs/umpires suck just as much.

TOKYO — Japanese voters handed a stinging electoral defeat to the ruling party Sunday, exit polls showed, rejecting a proposal to increase taxes and handicapping a fledgling government struggling to keep the world's second-largest economy from financial meltdown.
With public spending at more than double its GDP, Japan is trying to manage its ballooning debt while also addressing high unemployment and stagnant growth. Prime Minister Naoto Kan has warned the country could face a Greek-style meltdown if it does not get its finances in order — possibly by raising the sales tax.
But projected losses in elections for the upper house of parliament indicate voters have rejected his solution . . .

The World Cup is growing in importance in America. The ratings are solid. But it's still mainly an Olympics style event. The huge Michael Phelps ratings don't mean Americans became swimming fans in 2008.
Wimbledon ratings were down huge this year. Unclear why. I think the World Cup and Wimbledon audiences overlap a good bit, especially in the northeast, (upscale, white, cosmpolitan) and Wimbledon got drowned out.

The reason the left loses is, paradoxically, because of its periodic successes: once in power the mask slips, they cannot control themselves and so the people ultimately recoil and cue up “Won’t Get Fooled Again” by the Who. But of course they do, and so Tomasky’s “pitched ideological battle” — the struggle for the soul of the American experiment — goes on.

Yep -- and they got their asses handed to them by the Nippon version of the Tea Party.Read the Associated Puss article I linked to. They're crying in their Saki over the election results. A sample:
But projected losses in elections for the upper house of parliament indicate voters have rejected his solution, and will make it difficult for his government to effectively revive the economy.
. . .
The progressive Democratic Party of Japan was on it was to losing its slim majority — a stark contrast to the landslide victory it scored last August that ended a pro-Washington, conservative party's nearly 50-year grip on power.
. . .
"It's bad news for Kan and the party, and its really bad news for the nation because it means there isn't going to be resolute action on all the festering problems facing the government," said Jeff Kingston, director of Asian studies at Temple University in Japan. "And that's got global repercussions."
. . .

You're forgetting the most awesome ESPN personality in the history of awesomeness- Mel Kiper Jr and his hair. Mel and his hair come out of his Baltimore bunker for three days a year, makes up shit about players he never heard of, and then disappears for another year. And his hair seems to get taller over the course of the weekend.
My favorite ESPN moment was Bill Polian taking him to task - "You have no qualifications for doing what you do. You're as qualified as my mail man"

We were going to a Spring Training game and stopped at a convenience store for something, and there was Gammons, big as life, ten feet away. Tier 1: Follow in not only playoffs and regular season, but follow in off-season: NFL
1b: College football. I like almost as much as NFL, but unlike the NFL (where I can get hooked on a game even if the teams don't interest me) I usually have to have an interest in a team to watch a regular season game. Bowls, though, I'll watch more than my share.
2. Follow in playoffs and regular season, but not every team and not as much in the off-season: College basketball. This is partially because I don't get to see too many games up here.
3. Mainly follow in playoffs, but like several teams: NHL
4. Only follow in playoffs, and only care about a couple teams: baseball (college and MLB)
5. Only follow during big events infrequently, but with great interest: soccer
X. Just don't care: tennis, boutique Olympic sports, golf

So who gets to cook up Paul the Octopus?

And so the most-watched sporting event in television history comes to an end.
And so the most boring final game/match in any sport's history finally comes to an end, with a bogus red card on a flop leading to a goal in extra time by the Spanish against a short-handed Dutch side.
Ugh, I hate this "sport."

Holland had its problems. The referee, Howard Webb, is supposedly a British cop on his "day job". He decided to give the Dutch players yellow cards like a motorcycle cop trying to meet his "qouta" ---while letting the Spanish players "speed through the trap" without so much as tapping the siren to slow 'em down.
Ugly game.

ESPN was awesome when they started. Remember when MTV played videos, and ESPN played Aussie rules football, boxing, pro softball, any sport they could find (and by sport I do not mean Vegas poker)?

Webb the ref pulled so many yellow cards for the dutch that they were forced to played with a brake on.
Injesta and xavi are the game dividers and had to be given as little space as possiable by the dutch midfield but with yellow cards that could result in send off, so they had to play safe. The intensity had to cool otherwise it would mean a send off early in the second half.
Webb really fucked up the whole game by giving the netherlandse all the cards and spain hardly any cards and in the last ten minutes made five or six partial calls for spain which resulted in a goal. The Netherlands was robbed just like the USA.

I thought it was an excellent match. It had me on my toes wondering which side was going to break through. Each one had so many blown chances, including two total whiffs on crosses and many blown fastbreaks. Both of the keepers did well on a ton of saves.
The Dutch gameplan to engage the Spanish with physical play seemed to be working, and the Spanish looked like a different team than the ball control wizards who baffled Germany earlier this week. But it almost blew up in their faces early on, when a high kick challenge ought to have drawn a red card. I suspect the only reason it drew yellow was the refs' determination not to have an early red card controversy mar a World Cup final. He seemed to think he could control the game with yellows, and this had an unfortunate effect of encouraging excessive diving and histronics -- all absent from both teams' qualifying games earlier this week, which were notably clean. This was probably a mistake, as it created a sort of penal calculus going on that no doubt affected two controversial calls late in the game: the non-call of a penalty kick for, who was it, Robbens?, and the inevitable red card. After the high kick challenge early on, I figured it was only a question of time before some Dutchman got the red card, it was only a matter of who and for what. Sure enough, it came over a marginal call.
So, in this challenging environment, it was Spain who did emerge in the end with the game's sole uncontroversially clean goal. And they deserve the win. Congrats, Spain, this one has been a long time in coming! Well deserved.

Spain was the stronger side but only after the card bombardment.
The high kick of the jong was indeed a red card but so was the violent reaction of injesta after he was fouled somewhere in the second half. He would not have been in the match anymore to score that goal and spain would have been crippled by missing a player with a role like a quaterback.
The Netherlands just lost their third final so you could say
they had it long time coming.

Which of those Dutch cards did you feel was undeserved? All of them were no-brainers -- certainly De Jong should've seen straight red adios for the flying karate kick to Xavi Alonso, and van Bommel's wasn't much better.
So Webb did the Spanish no favors. They could've played 60 minutes with 10 or fewer. (He didn't send Arjen Robben off for kicking the ball away at the end, either.)
Frankly, after seeing some of the jams Webb gets himself into in the EPL, I expected much worse of him. His assignment today was almost impossible -- two teams who are cagey with the ball, flop all the time, and play defense right on the line between good and evil intent. I thought Webb did as good a job as I could expect.

Except for the bizarre goal-kick-to-Spain call, which (as Webb's luck would have it) indirectly led to the goal. 700 million people saw that go off of TWO Spaniards, and they get the ball? OOPS!

The kick was red but much of the spainish fouls where yellows and injesta who even attacked another player not even with the ball in sight should have gotten red too.
Webb was quite even handed till the last 10 minutes.
He suddenly started giving spain all kinds of breaks like not awarding a free kick and not giving an obvious corner. You can watch the last 10 minutes and you will see it happen. It was wierd.
The dutch were confussed by these wierd discissions and lost their grip on the game.

Yeah, the outcome of this game was set to break the hearts of a nation. The Dutch have now lost three finals and have become the Buffalo Bills of international soccer. I was serving both Heineken and sangria, but favoring the Heineken. My college roommate was a Dutchman, but our family hosted an exchange student from Barcelona, giving me personal ties to each country. So I had conflicting allegiances going in. Leaves me disappointed for the Dutch but happy for the Spaniards, who have had little to be cheerful of in a while.
It comes down to this. The Spanish took 19 shots, 6 on goal, and one worked out. The Dutch took 13 shots, 5 on goal, but they could not find the net. So we have elation in Spain and heartbreak in Holland. The Netherlands remain the best team to have never won a World Cup, which is a place of honor and nothing to be ashamed off. Number Two three times. That's a big achievement. They'll win yet, even if the Bills won't.

-- That's the "penal calculus" I described kicking in. It's similar to the thinking that results in a "make up call" in football. It's also foolhardy, I believe. Nevertheless this world has a stubborn, misbegotten faith in managed outcomes and enlightened guiding hands. I betcha Webb had a tit-for-tat punchcard tally up in his head running the entire game, and at the end he began meting out his justice. It isn't right; it's always better to call a spade a spade, even if that means issuing a red card in the first minute of a World Cup if that's what's merited. But they're all to chicken to do that, because it takes balls. Rather, they'll resort to this kind of penal calculus.
