World Cup: USA v. England
— Gabriel Malor

The U.S. team's first match starts at 11:30am Pacific and you can see it on ABC. It has been sixty years since the U.S. and England last met in a World Cup, when the U.S. team beat England 1-0, and there's been a lot of hype about this matchup.

England has a reputation that it frequently can't live up to. They've got some of the best players in the world, but the sometimes don't play well together. On the other hand, the U.S. is, in the soccer world, a young upstart still in need of schooling. Expect the commentators to bring Churchill quotes 'til your ears bleed. ("Two countries separated by a common language...oy.")

Either way this match goes, there's a very good chance of advancing out of the group stage, as England is the only major competition. Algeria and Slovenia are the other teams in Group C. However, (protip) never bet on a soccer game. Anyfreakingthing can happen when the typical game is decided by only one goal.

U.S. guys to keep an eye on are midfielder Landon Donovan (probably the most well-known U.S. player), defender Oguchi Onyewu, and team captain Carlos Bocanegra.

On the other squad, keep your eyes peeled for world-class striker Wayne Rooney (whose play today will probably make-or-break the UK game), midfielder Steven Gerrard, and midfielder Frank Lampard.

The rest of the world really is trying to make us care about soccer, excuse me, "football" as we were corrected by one of our UK guys yesterday. He sends our group an e-mail about the UK-USA matchup, wishes us luck even though our team won't win, anyway brought it to our attention when most of us have had more important events on our minds -  the Stanley Cup or NBA finals.

I've been in Italy when they were in the World Cup finals, and another time when they won. There is no U.S. comparison to the fever that consumes Europeans when their team is a contender. I hope the US team wins the World Cup, then I can get the T-shirt.

have y'all heard of Christopher Seider? He was a boy among a small mob who was taunting a Customs agent for the British at the man's home.

The mob was throwing rocks. The Customs guy shot his gun from his window to disperse the crowd, the shot hit and killed the Seider boy.

This happened two weeks before the Boston Massacre.

"The Seider/Richardson events could not have given Samuel Adams a better tool for kicking the revolutionary propaganda campaign into a higher gear...[...]

A funeral procession of five thousand Bostonians took place four days later (February 26, 1770) for Christopher Seider. His casket, inscribed with "innocence itself is not safe", was carried from Faneuil Hall, past the Town House where the governor and council met, down to the liberty tree, and to the Granary Burying Ground. His body was laid to rest there. People left flowers as a tribute. Sam Adams called Christopher "the first martyr to American liberty"."

74 I'll try to watch it, but I have to be somewhere around 3:30. The timing is exactly wrong. I'll probably be able to see the first half-hour and then miss the rest. Oh well. Related note: i know a woman who was contracted to do some artwork for the World Cup. She's originally from Nigeria and traveled to Africa to make an awesome photomontage thing of "street soccer", etc. Then, when she had finished her work, she got into a spat over a few hundred dollars worth of software that she needed to perfect the piece and FIFA wouldn't pay it. I thought she was nuts for not just paying it herself (I don't think she's wealthy but she does have a full-time University job, so she's not broke) and enjoy having gazillions of people see her work. No dice. She never signed off on them using anything and nothing of hers is in any of the promotional materials. Bad decision if you ask me, but she's the artiste so what do I know? Not related at all, but are any of you watching "24 Hours of LeMans" on the Speed Network? My wife and a few colleagues are there being hosted by the Aston Martin team all day today. I'm not a race fan, but I am a little jealous.

Internal administration documents reveal that up to 51% of employers may have to relinquish their current health care coverage because of ObamaCare.

Small firms will be even likelier to lose existing plans.

The "midrange estimate is that 66% of small employer plans and 45% of large employer plans will relinquish their grandfathered status by the end of 2013," according to the document.

In the worst-case scenario, 69% of employers — 80% of smaller firms — would lose that status, exposing them to far more provisions under the new health law.

Posted by: A Balrog of Morgoth at June 12, 2010 09:38 AM (ZESU0)

95 One reason why soccer is anti-American is an enormous amount of effort yields almost no substantial outcome. Back and forth for hours and the score is 1 to 0? Eff that. Americans like results. That's why we like basketball. Back and forth for hours and each team gets a hundred points. Euroginas can't understand that because all they live for is endless decay.

It's not so much the length as in the lack of scoring (heh). I used to play soccer and even I get bored watching low scoring games.

98 In regard to the BP oil spill, it would seem the staff for Admiral Thad Allen let him down since yesterday in the interview with Jack Tapper he said he knew nothing of the Maine oil boom supply but his office was sent a letter a few weeks ago letting him know of said oil boom ready to go and capability to manufacture.  Ooops.

Posted by: CDR M at June 12, 2010 01:33 PM (5I8G0)

I don't think Thad can blame it on his staff.  He failed, miserably, and that was after he was being such a miserable prick like his boss.  Of course, I have no respect for any of these douches who ally with, and disingenuously defend, the Indonesian Imbecile.  Thad Allen was a disastrous loser in this whole affair from the beginning.  No wonder he was working with The Precedent.

105 Designated hitters? Does soccer have designated corner kickers? Pinch runners? WTF? All soccer players are cross trained well enough in all aspects of their sport to play any position in a pinch and switching roles and positions is a constant part of a dynamic game. Let's see a major league pitcher play shortstop for an inning. For that matter, let's see a shortstop pitch for an inning. Which sport has the most annoying prima donnas? No contest. Google me this: How many times has MLB gone on strike and how many times have various soccer leagues in the world gone on strike? Does anyone know if the goalies have to run and cardio train with the rest of the team and have that capacity to run that 7 miles per game wind-sprinting for an hour and a half? It is amazing that they can kick a soccer ball nearly a hundred yards on the fly. I bet they'd do okay in a penalty kick off. Let's see a designated hitter (and you call soccer players pussies? WTF! Seriously. W.T.F.) throw a one-hopper to the plate from deep center. BTW, I play golf now. Go ahead, I can take it. Keep this in mind, though: An out of shape old man like me gets to watch a ball fly on target after imparting an average force that rises to approximately 2,000 lbs.during the half-millisecond of impact. If you haven't tried golf and kept at it long enough to really hit it solid, you should!

a simple, i dont care for football would suffice.

I love real football. I despise association football, i.e., soccer, not because it is boring, dull, silly, and as unsatisfying as betting on cats. I despise it because of the fact that it is pushed in our face repeatedly by people hung up on some idea that it is 'better' because shitheaps like Mexico and France enjoy it. Like that has any draw to an American.

Here, soccer is like kickball. It's a child's game. Sure, playing four-square and kickball and soccer was fun, but then I went to sixth grade. That's a huge obstacle to overcome before any American without elementary-school age children becomes very excited about soccer as a grown-up sport.

Outside of that, soccer is also seen as a foreign sport. And that's never going to change, and it is never going to be perceived as a positive.

Succes for the USA team from europe.

You are getting to the top five or six in the world even if

soccer isn't that big in the US.

The next world cup you will be world campions.

I'm rooting for you guys. Enjoy

Do not think soccer equals invasion of mexicans. It's got nothing to with it.

Invasion of mexicans is an invasion of mexicans.

Soccer is soccer or the real football. Foot and ball says it all.

The US declared national suicide on Nov 4th, 2008. There's no question about that. But, it doesn't help Europe's case, at all, especially as the Indonesian Imbecile was more popular among Europeans than he ever was among Americans.

I still don't understand why Germany even allowed the retard to hold a US Precedential campaign stop there. Of course, I don't understand why he was thrown out of the race for doing that. Campaigning in a foreign nation is, so far as I am aware, totally illegal.

-->just remember that before you start pointing the finger and having a laugh at our suffering.

I heap the same sort of disapproval on Obama as I do on all the European socialists. More even, since the US should be able to learn from the failed policies of Europe.

Of course, Europe has been electing socialists since the end of WWII, whereas this is only year two of the US' experiment in suicide, and there's a strong reaction against it, whereas Europe seems to be loving their Kool-Aid, so I maintain it's one giant sea of Communist fuckknobs over there.

Er ... patriotism applies to important things.  Not sporting events.  We don't have much in the way of "national teams" or appetite for such.  Americans are more into individual achievement, and with teams, individual teams - not national teams.

How many Americans watch the Davis Cup?  How many watch Olympic tennis?  Almost none.  But we watch lots of professional tennis and golf - and we generally root for the Americans in those.

Yes, really.  Americans approach the Olympics differently than any other nation, too.  That's why The Precedent's pathetic trip to Copenhagen to have the White House beg the Olympic committee for the games was so unbelievably un-American.

Americans like the Olympics for the actual competition - especially in sports that we don't see much otherwise.  But it isn't the "national" part of it that Americans care about.  Most Americans, I think, thought the basketball Dream Teams were kind of pathetic.

Name one "national team" that your average American knows about or knows how it's put together.  We just aren't structured that way.

No there is pure patriotic whoring on the Americans part with the Olympics (outside of probably admiration for a few spectacular athletes like Nadia Comenchi or Usain Bolt). I really don't see Americans all that interested in cross country skiing or team handball. There are a few sports, namely tennis, where the individual is more important than the team itself. I don't think that anyone cares about the Davis Cup and foreign players do have lots of fans. Soccer is odd because outside a very small minority, mainly working for the New York Times, most Americans could care less about either the team or the individual.

Exactly.  And you don't need an Olympics for sports that have major professional leagues, like tennis or basketball - especially if the Olympians can be pros, themselves.  It makes no sense.

Frankly, I have yet to figure out why any top pro tennis players waste their time at the Olympics.  No one even watches it or cares.

512 I dunno, IlliniDiva... granted, I'm not the most objective observer because I spent a decade working in hockey and have friends who've played for the national team, but the US National Team is something I keep pretty close tabs on.

I would counter that if any of the US national teams were followed at all aggressively, they'd remain in the public eye. Hell, in the (rather unexpected) soccer hotbed of KC, there's a pretty aggressive discussion (at least online) of folks talking about the long-term prospects of US Soccer.

Your mileage may vary.

Some good points you got there. They should try some of those things but the fifa is very hardheaded in changes.

Soccer is  sometimes  also a game that you play with controle of the ball.

If you have posession the opponent has to first get posession

to determen the game.

Controlling the ball passing with the correct speed and recieving it are all very difficult with your feet. Every body can catch a ball that is what your hands are made for.

If you can appreciate those things a soccer match gets a deeper demention.

I would say that "judges" in boxing aren't really judging. They count the number of punches landed to determine the winner of a round. That is except when they want a particular boxer to win, that is when it ceases to be a sport.

An umpire is there to assure that you play by the rules, a judge is not.

573 IlliniDiva-

True enough- but my point is that unless the folks who decide what's being talked about decide to talk about it, nobody gets behind it. Case in point- the Beckham signing. The hope was that it would generate genuine interest, but none of the folks involved in sports journalism know anything about soccer, either. Result? They didn't write about it.

Conversely, when Wayne Gretzky was moved from Edmonton to Los Angeles, hockey exploded and people got interested. In the next ten years, a bunch of teams popped up across the southern US.

On the National Team stage- no sports journalist appears to give a wet shit about playing for your country (or being one of the best in your country) and the honor involved in that.

Meanwhle, Chicago's Patrick Kane (Cup-winning goal for the Blackhawks) talked about how he wore his Team USA jersey for a week after being picked for the Olympics "because it's real".

Great story, but the journalists all yawned. That's my only point there. Playing for your country doesn't matter to them, and they can keep it from being a discussion.

America only really got into international competition during the days of the USSR.  It's not our bag.  But national teams have that whiff of fascism about them.

Our sports have people who play "for" cities and but mostly never lived there until they were hired.  It's a very American thing, although you see it in Euro soccer leagues.  But what they really care about is the national team.

647 Amish-

Gotcha. I can't answer that accurately, because when I left football and went to soccer and ultimately hockey, all I ever wanted to do was play for Team USA in something.

Certainly, in the US, we've got guys who are poster children for their adopted cities (Jim Kelly in Buffalo, Drew Brees in New Orleans, Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles), and in Canada, you could make the argument that Sidney Crosby (gag) has picked up the national icon status from Gretzky or from Mario Lemieux.

I think geography does have something to do with it- there are so many distinct regions in the US that are the size of many of these countries that make national heroes of their athletes.

Even Michael Jordan- as close as we've had in my lifetime to a national hero athlete- didn't capitalize so much on his Team USA fame as he did on being a Chicago Bull.

So let me turn that back around- is it a function of the sport, of the country, or of the neighborhood? You're right- the US has never really bought into international play.

Actually, someone taking the time and energy to notice that someone is "middle aged" (because that's a crime, they must have done something horrible to actually age, like live, work, rear a family) and then spending the time and energy to notice what they are wearing and the logo on their clothes and how much they weigh and the fit and then store that information away to denegrate them as a class at some later date is more disgusting. Of course, it's always nice to be young and fit and not ridden hard by life and wearing something approved by who? Perhaps Michelle can help you set up a logo police.

Illinidiva at June 12, 2010 04:38 PM (9ubSc)

Kids can play one against one with bricks standing up at about 30 feet from each other and if you knock your oppents brick down with the ball  you score.

But for grown up's the aspect of the tactics is more important.

You can play a counter game where you pull back and let the opponent come to your goal. Thus opening up the space behind them to break out fast before the defense can  regroup. You would do that if you have a good defense and a few fast running forwards.

A team can play on possesion of the ball to prevent the other team to play their own game and putting presure on the goal of the other team.

A team can use the off side rule to sabotage the other teams offence.

There are alot of aspects of soccer that grown-ups also like. But you must know what to look for.

If I where the FIFA I would stop the clock and have a fixed playing time to prevent the girly cuddling and rolling on the field to waste time.

And like someone already said 4 times 15 min. Good for advertising and good for the speed of the game.

Just one note still.

I must admit, compaired to american football and the show and activity  on and around the field soccer looks boring.

A big difference but also simularity is that a lot of runnig of offensive or defensive patterns is happening dynamically and is sometimes hard to spot.

With american football the plays have a clear beginning and end.

A few yards are won or lost while in soccer that is a continuing process with out a clear beginning or end.

The anticipation of an american football game is sliced up in sections to lead up to an explosion but with soccer every dual is a gaining or losing of yards.

So if you look at it that way there are some simularity's.

American football is much more explosive than soccer admitted but I still don't understand that people can say without a doubt  that they rather look at a baseball match for 5 hours but can not get though a soccer match.

Maybe because it take 45 minutes for one half and you can't just walk away because maybe you will miss a goal.

Baseball you can and nothing would of happend, nuff said.

734 With baseball, despite being boring for stretches, there are generally homers and spectacular defensive catches, etc. during the game. Plus, it is really about the atmosphere (aka going to Wrigley and people watching). Now I generally just forgo the ticket and do the people watching around addison for the cost of a couple of 312s.

Posted by: Illinidiva at June 12, 2010 01:56 PM (9ubSc)

735 gdg- Depends. They were showing replays of a shot on goal, so I went to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. Yup. England scored their goal so I missed it live. Goes with the territory. Cooler by the tv and Depends should fix that, but I am not a contingency thinker. That's one (among many) great thing about American Football, you won't miss live action while the broadcasters are showing replays. WHo decides when to show the replay? They could blow a live shot of a goal. I am sure it has happened and will happen again.

312s ?

Attending a Baseball match is, what I understand more a family event in theUS.

With a BBQ and camping gear but it is more for the event than for the sport. Playing it could be fun and relaxing on a summer afternoon. Great

Watching it on TV is boring accept for a few moments with three bases taken and two out, but man you have to wait  along time for those.

Soccer at least has a time limit of 90 min.

So when people say they can watch a baseball match and not a soccer match they are not always telling the whole truth.

Posted by: gdg at June 12, 2010 02:16 PM (JS+7s)

737 Eh, that was actually pretty good for a soccer game. Still, a tie......World Cup would generate a lot more interest in the US if it was a true "one loss and out" tournament style like football(the real one) to get to the Super Bowl. Oh, with overtime/sudden death. Not godforsaken "shootouts". The Best Part though was seeing how distraught ESPN's limey commenter was about the tie in the post game show. I hung around just to see him. Yesterday, he was pissing all over the US team's chances to even make a game of it. Like a Brits were going to treat the US team like The Chicken. So, yeah, eat it, Percival. The only thing better would've been if England actually lost. Then we would've seen full-on man tears for sure as upset as he was over the tie. ----------

The TV directors  should  play the replay in a cut out screen  while they keep following the main game.

They never do.

The reason why soccer is less interesting for advertisers is the lack of dead moments but the players create them themselves to buy time when leading the score. They should stop the clock and show a few sec advert. It could be done but part of soccer is to sometimes suddenly start the game to surprize the other team. That would change the way it is played.

776  After having an Austrian friend try, frustratingly so for him, to get me interested and conversant in soccer/football and then having the likewise experience myself with him concerning baseball I have come to this conclusion:

Maybe Americans (in general) are just not supposed to "get" soccer...and Euros (in general -- my husband is German and adores baseball, hates soccer) are just not supposed to "get" baseball.  For myself, while I loved playing soccer as a kid I just can't get fired up about it as a spectator; whereas with baseball I see it as one of the most fascinating games out there -- wonderful to play, excellent to watch (although I hate seeing it on tv because you miss a lot of the finer and more nuanced aspects of the play -- hmm, sound familiar Euro and S. American football fans?).

Perhaps we should just accept that about ourselves and be thankful that the world is such a wonderful and various place -- look at how much fun we all have poking fun at each other's sports proliclivities!

-- and no, I'm not watching the World Cup, probably won't and, well, you notice I haven't commented on this post until now.

743 For once, I'm rooting against the US.
The faster we get eliminated, the faster I stop hearing about soccer.
For the next few years, anyway.

While I'm sure it's nice that there's a sport where double amputees aren't at a significant disadvantage, seeing athletes deliberately handicapped by a rule best described as "downright silly" is straight out of Harrison Bergeron.

While it's good that a poor third-world village can pool its resources and purchase all the equipment needed for the sport (a single ball).  It kind of overlooks the fact that we are tool users.  Most sports not only acknowledge, but embrace, this fact.

We can only wait for much of the world to realize this and come to their senses.

I know baseball is an intricate game. Very tactical and great to play and attend in a stadium.

There is nothing wrong with baseball but it is not a game for LIVE TV compaired to say soccer.

Ice hockey is very lively and action packed  great for live TV but even that is sometimes much to fast to follow. First you have to see five reruns to see how and if a goal was made.

Posted by: Illinidiva at June 12, 2010 03:40 PM (9ubSc)

I disagree.  Soccer is on the rise in the US in a big way.  Here in Seattle we have 32000 season ticket holders for the Seattle Sounders (our MLS team), and average 36000+ in attendence--which puts us in the top 40 in the world.  Next season we have Vancouver and Portland joining the league, and they should have similar success.  More tickets for the world cup were purchased in the USA than in any other country, and ESPN now has broadcast rights for La Liga and the English Premier League and you will be seeing more of that.

If we get the 2018 World Cup--fingers crossed--it may be the final nudge the US needs to join the world as a first-class soccer power.

" Now I'm off to remind some Australians that the USA doesn't really care about the 'America's cup' sailing thing much either.

758 If the USA did win the World cup it might indicate that Obama's sabotage has finally cause a schitzoid cognitive dissonance sufficient to mentally transform the USA (or at least the elitist decision making end of it) into yet another European nincompoop nation. Winning seems like it might be a symptom of national brain damage or confusion due to hyper-toxicity levels of bullshit in the country's mental blood supply. So losing really seems like the better option to me.
