World Cup: USA v. Ghana
— Gabriel Malor

Good morning, sports fans, after a shaky match against Algeria, it's the Round of 16. The U.S. team will take on Ghana at 2:30pm Eastern.

Ghana is supposedly the weakest team to make it past the group stage, so the U.S. team should have no trouble....Yeah, right. They said the same thing about the Algeria match, which had to be won in extra time after the U.S. team missed shot after shot. With a dozen missed goals and another blind referee, I'm sure this game will keep me on the edge of my seat.

Oh, and here's something to keep an eye for at the top of the game. The national anthems of the two teams play just before the start of the games and soccer fans have a tradition of belting out their nation's song. Didn't know how U.S. fans would handle it, as our national anthem doesn't exactly lend itself to full-throated drunken warbling. But the Americans at the World Cup have been absolutely screaming it at the top of their lungs. And it. is. AWESOME.

Update: From commenter Tami, this doesn't sound good. Err...I mean it sounds good for some, but not for others. (By which I mean: w00t, suckers.)

5 I couldn't really give a rat's behind about this but I just read this at another site and then saw the thread here.

But the Serbian coach of Ghana, Milovan Rajevac, complained that his side is beset by injuries and may not have enough time to recover after a tough match against Germany.

"We don't have enough to refresh, consolidate our team, Rajevac said. "All we can do is pray that our players will be ready for the next game."

That's a rope-a-dope.  Ghana's real problem is that if they don't get the call when they flop in the crease, they can't score.

Which, considering our defense and our luck, means they will win like 7-2

8 Are ties not allowed going forward? I hope they aren't. Can't really get excited about a team that advanced in a tournament by only winning 1 of the 3 games they have played.

10 Even more than usual.  Since they don't have many big-haired Euros, they need to make up the difference in extra referee punching and injury faking.

Well given my expert experience of watching about as much nba as I do soccer, I think the NBA players typically fake being fouled, and try to put on a performance there.  I don't think they try and spend a minute or more writhing around on the court.  So um, more.

Posted by: Jehu at June 26, 2010 09:30 AM (dgfvb)

19 Flopping in the NBA is usually the result of real, substantial (but not foul-worthy) contact. Basketball is a contact sport -- especially inside with the big men. Dudes just ram into each. But a defender is expected to take a solid hit on the dribble down or when the guy square's to the basket.

In soccer they flop with, often, zero contact. More commonly there's a slight brush on the ankle or tap to the thigh that sends them to the ground rolling in agony.

That's another thing. The NBA doesn't do the rolling in agony. You take the hit, fall to the ground, get the foul, and jump right back up. A classic Rodman/Artest NBA flop is you take a shoulder-charge and don't brace yourself -- you let the shoulder-change send you flying. They really take a serious hit. It's the equivalent of crowding the plate and leaning into the pitch in baseball to get hit by the pitch -- it's cheating, but it still takes bravery since you really have to take the physical damage.

26 Yeah, the Ghana coach is definitely sandbagging.
USA will need to score at least 2 goals in this game to overcome the 1 the Refs are sure to give them. They don't want a tie either, the US will lose on penalties.
Hopefully Altidore passes a lot because if he keeps taking the shots the US is doomed.

Ghana is definitely beatable as long as we come out strong for a change.  If we win, it doesn't get any easier, because we'll have to play Uruguay.

Personally, I can't wait for this game, because every US win is a shank in the back of the Eurotrash.

29 8 "Are ties not allowed going forward? I hope they aren't. Can't really get excited about a team that advanced in a tournament by only winning 1 of the 3 games they have played."

The contest must end with a winner and loser.  If the score is level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time are played - 2 15 minute "halves"; no sudden death.  All 30 minutes (plus any injury time) are played.

If still level - a penalty shoot-out.  Each team gets five penalty kicks (manager determines kicking order).  Best of five wins.  If still level after 5, first successful penalty wins; however, both players in each round kick - if both succeed, go to next round.  Players do not kick twice until all eleven (or however many) on the field at the end of the game (including 'keeper) have kicked - then through again in the same order.  If one team is playing with less than 10 men at end of game (due to red cards), the other team must eliminate a player from its kicking order so that both teams enter the shoot-out with the same number of players.

Posted by: cconscious, but incoherent at June 26, 2010 09:46 AM (YVZlY)

37 Think of soccer flopping as the old-time acting styles in vaudeville and stage drama.

You have to make the emotions big cause the audience is far away and can't see detail. Subtle eye movements and slight frowns are invisible. You have to be really, really happy or really, really sad or really, really angry for the audience to see.

Same thing in soccer with the ref. He can't see everything and might be dozens of yards away from the incident, so you have to roll on the ground in fake agony to get his attention and convince him a foul occurred. If you don't then real fouls won't get called. Of course, as we've seen, this is easily and often abused.

They could fix this with more refs on the field. They have rules against flopping, but since typically the ref doesn't see the actual incident with any detail, he can't tell whether it was flopping or not.

Harsh post game penalties after reviewing the video replay would help as well -- but not in the biggest matches where the reward is so great for flopping.

44 Yeah flopping is silly but fouls won't get called without them and you can thank Brazil for them really. The Italians didn't really do it 30 years ago and just took the pummeling from Germany then they watched Brazil get call after call and then the Italians, being Italians, raised it to an art form.

There won't be an African ref but the European's will be just as bad.

FIFA thinks part of the job of promoting soccer is to allow bad teams to go further than they would have as an incentive. The only game that really matters to them is the one Brazil is playing anyway.

PRE-GAME JOKE

HOW TO SELL.....TOOTH BRUSHES

The kids filed back into class Monday morning. They were very excited.

Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on productive salesmanship.

Little Sally led off: "I sold girl scout cookies and I made $30.00," she said proudly, "My sales approach was to appeal to the customerÂ’s civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success."

"Very good," said the teacher.

Little Jenny was next:

"I sold magazines," she said, "I made $45.00 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events."

"Very good, Jenny." said the teacher..

Eventually, it was Little JohnnyÂ’s turn.

The teacher held her breath....

Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacherÂ’s desk. "$2,467," he said.

"$2,467!" cried the teacher, "What in the world were you selling"

‘TOOTHBRUSHES," SAID Little Johnny.

"Toothbrushes," echoed the teacher.

"How could you possibly sell enough toothbrushes to make that much money?"

"I found the busiest corner in town, "said little Johnny, "I set up a Dip & Chip stand, I gave everybody who walked by a free sample."

They all said the same thing, "Hey this tastes like dog shit!"

Then I would say, "It is dog shit. Wanna buy a toothbrush?

I used the Obama governmental approach of giving you something shitty, but looks good, for free, and then making you pay to get the shitty taste out of you mouth."

The teacher was speechless.....Little Johnny got 5 stars for his efforts, bless his heart....

If you recall, one of the liberal Democrat executives at Google remarked on C-SPAN several months ago that, in what would essentially amount to a sleazy campaign of harrassment,  Google and Microsoft (via Internet Explorer) are going to make it increasingly more difficult for right-wingers to access right-wing blogs and to post on those right-wing websites

BTW, if you had gone to Wikopedia a little while ago, you would have seen a shocking series of comments to the effect that they had been instructed (by unidentified persons) to delete mention of Ace Of Spades HQ for "presumably political reasons", for which they were receiving a lot of flack, especially since they were also blatantly advising people to go to Andrew Sullivan's website (presumably for an explanation as to why people couldn't access Ace Of Spades HQ), and they were asking for reader feedback. No bullshit. That's what it said.

It ain't happening just in Venezuela, folks. It's beginning to happen here, too. Another example of which was the sneaky end-run legislation to restrict First Amendment rights that the Democrats passed in the House on Thursday, and which now has to go to the Senate.

It's not you. They are better technically but altidore  must switch to defence when ghana is in possesion. He doesn't make the switch by stepping back a few yards and therefore ghana has an extra free player in midfield.

The US defence has to leave their position to pick up the man altidore lets go.

The space than increases for ghana between the US defence and midfield lines.

I really can't get into a game that can go 90 minutes without a score and, in fact, can end up as a 0-0 tie. Even more outrageous is these idiotic penalty kicks that often win the games.  What was the purpose of all the running beforehand?

So, I have to ask myself -- why does this game appeal so much to the rest of the world but barely hits the radar in the US?  There has to be a reason.

Is it the mob of men in shorts trotting up and down the field?  Basketball has that. I'm not a big fan of basketball but I'd watch it before I'd watch soccer.

Is it the fact the game can go on for eternity without a score?  Baseball has that. Yet baseball is a lot more watchable than this crap.

Is it the occasional low-blow foul that gives a ref his Academy Award moment?  Just about any normal sport has that. Hell, Mike Tyson ate Evander Holyfield's ear -- lot of outrage but not a lot of real surprise.

If you like soccer, fine.  Some people love "Championship Wrestling" -- go for it.  I guess I'm one of those clingy, gun-toting types that would rather watch a re-run of an NFL game than any live soccer game. I don't get soccer and, in fact, it is about as boring as a sports can get.

The legislation that the Democrats passed in the House on Thursday essentially requires Republican candidates to disclose the sources of all of their financial contributions and the amounts of those contributions , while also enabling labor unions and environmental groups to conceal both the amounts of their contributions and the people to whom they funnel their contributions via a variety of organizations, an end-run to get around and to nullify the SCOTUS decision of a few months ago, again in favor of the Democrats.

I'm surprised that Ace didn't mention that legislation which again limits First Amendment rights for Republicans and their for their contributors. If it passes in the Senate, it will benefit Democrats greatly in this fall's election.

325 did you know: ghana was once called 'the gold coast' (it's next to a country called cote d'ivoire or ivory coast). they have big gold deposits. the dominate group, the ashanti people, are famed for their gold work. back in the 16th century (i think) the king of ghana made a hadj to mecca with a huge retinue and brought so much gold that price of gold in europe was depressed for decades! people traveled much more back then than we think.

Point of the concert is to BRING PEOPLE TO THE GULF to spend money.  Some people bought plane tix and hotel rooms and now have to cancel because the tickets are pretty much ungettable.  So, well done, commie libs.

I don't think our soccer team being good is going to help either.  Because no matter how good you are there will always be games where you lose.  But in those games where the US would lose and people are watching you will have what happened here as soon as Ghana was ahead.  Everytime that a US player touched them they fell to the ground holding their knees and crying.  Because they know that milks the clock.  There was even one where I don't think anyone even touched the guy and he was on the ground and I saw nothing for a reason.  Its not going to make anyone interested and just piss off and disgust casual viewers to the point they will never move beyond casual.

470 soccer: the peasant sport. the commoner's aspiration. when marx wrote of sports being the opiate of the masses, with its projected national identity, he was talking about soccer. not baseball. or football. i know a dutchman, long living and working here who has the typical disdain for baseball. i put this to him: when a visiting team no-hits a home team, what do you think happens? he answered with disdain, a riot. no, i told him, the crowd gave the visiting pitcher a standing ovation. showed him!

476 Do you know why soccer sucks?   Essentially because the thing that defines human beings on a physical plane is we walk upright and we USE our hands.  I mean would you like a pie-eating contest where people use their feet to shovel slices into their mouths?  Or how about a tennis match swinging the racket with your teeth or feet?  Dumb European sport, almost like their culture, lets have a government where we cripple ourselves, our economy, our ability to function.  That is why soccer sucks it IS European.  In this country, until Obama outlaws the use of hands we like sports, where you use your hands!  And we like more closely interacting teamwork and precision, think Basketball, or Football, or something that is a little more strategic like Baseball.

Soccer is just like ice hockey; only without ice, sticks, pads, fights, and actual excitement. Even lacrosse is better (despite the cheese-eating surrender monkey name), but at least has the grass field like soccer. But since lacrosse still has sticks, pads, fights, and actual excitement it's still the better game.

But other than that, this 'soccer' thing is ok. Just not enough to get worked up about either way.

There's shittier sports out there, I guess.

Shuffleboard. Badmitten. Dog fighting. Cock fighting (which just seems to be a bad way to use one's cock).

Yeah, the spine-yanking fouls were pretty typical. The only thing that seemed questionably un-called was the lack of an unsportsmanlike for delay of game when Ghana had some guy collapse after a "foul", the stretcher being called across the field, and the subsequent, slow substitution. Clearly a penalty that should not have been mere extra time applied to the bonus-time already being played.

Overall, officiating was fine for the World Cup.

521 yet decide to tell me to fuck off and make fun of my mother I wasn't making fun of your mother, Monkey Nuts, I was making fun of you. Really, no one is worked up about your preference of leisure activity. Your being an ill-mannered little shit weasel. That is why you are getting grief.

522 like the shining city on the hill, american sports represent the ethos of individual achievement within the structures of fair play. soccer players are frustrated individuals desperately acting out their aspirations of personal achievement within the set clock of their lives, all within the context of hopeless, class-bound societies. the opiated masses find relief in projecting themselves into the futile drama. in baseball and football all, is grace and opportunity for the individual within the team , in a timeless universal (rather than existential) context.

523 LincolnTf-- I used to, when I lived in Iowa (and had nothing better to do, lol).  My rating is strictly blue-hair...haven't played in a tournament in two and a half years.  I've thought about checking out the Milwaukee area clubs when I move back...I don't know.  The politics stuff seems more urgent a hobby, but it would probably be healthy to obsess over something else for awhile.

525 543 Couldn't a large group of pro-2nd Amendment campers, say 200-300, decide to go camp on the BLM land out there? Maybe bring some beer and hot dogs.

I saw a report briefly while surfing the T.V. a couple of days ago, showing a bunch of guys in fatigues getting ready to go down to the border.  This was not the bunch that organized a few years ago, forgot their name, but looked like a bit more militant bunch.  People are getting mad about this.  Now talk that Obama wants to executive order amnesty, you want to see an explosion, then let them try that.  This is nation destroying what is going on with immigration right now, already it is dividing states.

526 544 anybody that doesn't want to start a war over soccer opinions on here? or are the weekend commentators this pathetic? ----------------- Don't know about the other commenters, but I'm pretty certain this was dealt with decisively way back at comment 303.

528 YRM, here's another clue for your clueless ass. If you had showed up during the game maybe some would have cared what you tought and not have jumped on your ass.

Instead you show up afterwords to rub salt in the wound just because someone actually gave a crap what a US National sports team is doing.  You are as bad as the dnawagon jumpers you are trying to pretend to make fun of. Check that, your worse. At least those people had good intentions. You're just a douche with time to kill waiting for Mom to get ready to take you to McDonald's.

this place is getting ugly w/ you and Fluffy being complete dicks but I already explained about why I came here after the game, I was busy, didn't expect the US to win, saw they lost, went to Ace to feel better, saw a soccer thread was the only one breathing, ranted on the soccer mania cycle, gave props to it as the funnest to play but most boring to watch, and then you 2 became complete dicks, last thing I will say on the matter

Posted by: YRM (The Youngest Ace Reader) at June 26, 2010 02:17 PM (uLoHz)

534 524 I take it no one is rioting in LA with the loss.  Oh nevermind.  It was the US that lost, not Mexico.

Yes, it is. (Change "loves" to "hates" -- that, too.)

541 The U.S. just lacks talent, especially up front.

Four games. Zero goals from strikers.

Oh, and the defense is porous.

Can't score. Can't defend. Other than that, we're on the right track.

542 I wonder how they select the players and coaches for the national team. I saw a defender go 1-on-1 with Guyana's star player with nobody behind him but the goalie, and lose. The entire defense played kickball over their midfield. It seemed everything they did was to reduce probability of success. Can you imagine watching a NBA game where the players shoot from midcourt, or a NFL quarterback throwing hail mary's every play?

I for one did watch the game. I happen to like the game, although I'm not what you'd call an enthusiast, and the USA is about my second-choice as team. I thought that the USA should have done better and my condolences to the USA fans in here that the team let you down.

England's my team, and I do not have my hopes up for tomorrow. However I do have some, faint, hope and I'll be up early to see how well they are founded.

As for those who hate the game, well, you can blow me. I'm watching this shit anyway.

549 Yeah, the mighty USA loses a pointless "game" to a bunch of 3rd world dirt farmers. The team's reward? They get to come back to the USA and sweet, sweet anonymity.
