WTF? "MacGruber" Currently Earning 100% Positive Rating on Rotten Tomatoes
— Ace

Only seven reviews, but seriously, weren't you guessing 20% at best?

The scary thing is several of these reviews are kinda rave-ish. This review pans the film as stupid and unambitious and a waste of everyone's talents -- but then still says it's funny enough to see anyway.

I never really liked the sketch myself, but apparently they've made, as one reviewer says, one of the best comedies in recent years.

Two jokes I like -- the villain is named "Van Cunth," with a silent "h," and that business about parking 20 blocks away at the end of this.

Funniest MacGruber Ever: Okay, this series of short sketches had me wailing. Thanks to CDR M.

1 I have a really hard time believing this but, if so, great--a good comedy is about as hard to find as a good horror movie. (Speaking of which: go see Lake Mungo.)

A film Ace will soon decide is one of the best cinematic endeavors of the last fifty years.

And who knows? He might be right.

3 Yeah, this is gotta be some kind of joke.

I couldn't believe it when I saw this trailer in the theater the other day.  A MacGruber movie?  Srsly?

5 Hey, I lol'ed. I'm hoping this is good; I like movies and too many of them are a waste of time and cash.

Posted by: Zimriel at May 12, 2010 03:44 PM (leK0F)

6 I doubt it... I really think the sketch is kind of dumb, and apart from a couple of gags, the trailers don't make me laugh. I am sort of interested to see them string together a series of unrelated dick and poop and gay and race jokes together. They seem to have decided to just throw everything at the fan, and half of it sticks.

7 Given that the A-Team is coming out soon, it is a well-timed spoof.  I've always liked Will Forte more in movies than on SNL, so I'd give this a chance (on Blu-Ray, from Netflix).

I guess I'm just surprised Hollywood is actually releasing something, you know, half way original.

Hell, it's not a remake or a reimagining. That's surprising in and of itself.

Posted by: Dack Thrombosis at May 12, 2010 03:50 PM (P33XN)

15 >>>>And it doesn't look that funny to me. I don't think so either (except for a few jokes), BUT... there is a thing you can do in comedy, which they did here, which is just start throwing every fricken joke you can think of at the audience, which starts to work on them until they get into the spirit of it and just start laughing at most anything. I mean, if it works. But for a lot of these reviewers it seems to have had just that effect. Like Airplane. Everyone raves about Airplane. But... a lot of the jokes aren't great, exactly. What they are is extremely silly. The magic comes from the spirit of it and the sheer number of gags. The effect of having one extremely silly joke after another piled on you is to make you start grinning and then start laughing at whatever joke they tell next, even if (maybe *because*) it's even dumber than the last one.

I'm not sure how old you are, Ace, but the movie is funnier if you grew up seeing stuff like Bracken's World or The Bold Ones on TV, the kind of stuff that Leslie Nielsen appeared in doing roles like Drebin, but played straight. Airplane! is really a sendup of the whole corny '70s Big Men Doing Big Things milieu, and not just the Airport movies.

Still, I've never been all that fond of the Robin Hood story, nor of the various fictionalizations of it over the years (not even the famouse Erroll Flynn one). 72 48%er, Night At The Roxbury and the song was "what is love" by Haddaway.

For about 6 weeks in the fall of 1989, the top three on the Radio One charts were: Black Box "Ride On Time", Technotronic "Pump Up The Jam", and "What is Love" at #3. I remember it vividly.

The next summer Bryan Adams was #1 for fifteen weeks: "Everything I Do I Do It For You".

73 I picked up Legion recently, thinking, "How bad can it really be?" Answer: very bad indeed. Very bad. Not even due to the blasphemous premise (note: God's angels do not "possess" people), but due to the completely inept and senseless script. The SFX were even pretty sub-par. Constantine was better than this turd of a movie, and Constantine was only slightly less offensive than a dog turd on top of a wedding cake.

96 Constantine was hilarious. They invent this new chapter to 1 Corinthians, which somehow survived such that it got to a freakin' printing press and attached to a copy, not of Paul's letters in Greek, but of a Vulgate of part of Isaiah in Latin.

And then the old sage who's supposedly translating the thing puts his finger on the WRONG LINE of the Latin.

I'm thinking every Biblical scholar who saw that scene wet himself in laughter.

114 Constantine was hilarious My pastor once got on my case a little bit about my taste in movies, and mentioned Constantine prominently. I told him not to fret, because Constantine had about as much to do with actual Christianity as McHale's Navy with the actual Navy. Legion is even worse, positing a God who dispatches pistol-packin' angels who will gun down the sinners of the world. (Why God would need to actually have angels shoot evildoers rather than just drop them on the spot from an aneurysm or stroke or bolt of lightning goes pretty much unexplained.) In short, these movies simply appropriate the most surface-level Christian iconography for artistic effect, and combine it with the usual "look how daring I am!" rebellion against religion. (But note how careful they are to mock a religion that doesn't behead people for such things!)

Now it would just be some lame spoof by someone like Damon Wayans or Chris Rock. In the DVD commentary, Mel Brooks said that he hired Richard Pryor to write the "black comedy" parts, but Brooks ended up doing a lot of the dialogue for Cleavon Little, and Pryor wrote a lot of Korman's dialogue. Mel Brooks had absolutely no fear. It just goes to show that modern directors are complete pissants compared to the guys who came before them.

When it comes to movies about math or science, we never get much to choose from.  I loved Good Will Hunting, even though it screwed up the math story to end up as a whiny diatribe about "love" - going against the whole real point of it.  But, the few parts where the math shone brightly (not real math, but close enough for movies) was enough to make it thoroughly enjoyable.

The same for A Beautiful Mind.  It would have been nice to keep the idiotic "love" crap out of it and make it more about real math ... but we're never going to see that, as those who make these movies are just too dumb to know the real stories.  It's a shame, because a movie about a true genius, like Gauss or Von Neumann, doing their stuff would be a huge seller, I think.  Especially Von Neumann.  He was made for movies to be made about - for real.

197 200 Buckaroo Banzai was a pretty damn good comedy too.

Always left me totally cold. I even gave it several chances, wondering what everyone was seeing in that mess.

198 John Lithgow will forever be Dr. Emilio Lazardo to me.

199 I loved Good Will Hunting When Damon started spouting off with Zinn's "People's History of the History of the United States", I wanted to punch him in the face. I despise that movie on so many levels that it's hard to explain without an easel, paper, and several colored pens.

200 Lithgow did a good job in Raising Cain.

Not unless it goes heavy on a love interest(s).  Most people who pay to see movies don't give a shit about math or genius.

I'm still disappointed college was not as fun as portrayed in Real Genius, which I first saw at....math camp.

204 The 90min Phantom Menace Guy could have a career on Matt Damon's shitty movies. Oh, I like the Bourne movies okay. But Damon lets his leftist agenda drive a lot of his career, which explains turds like The Green Zone.

205 Uh, I know what you mean, but his "original" works were parodies, and not that original to begin with, n'est-ce pas?

There's quite a difference between writing a parody and then just taking that same script 40 years later and re-making it as a Broadway play because you're out of ideas.

Of course, if the alternative was to make more fine films like 'Dracula: Dead and Loving It...'

I disagree.  I think people are fascinated with genius, and with math, specifically.  Even though they don't understand it, the equations and symbols fascinate people - even more than they like to watch medical shows that throw around jargon they don't understand, in the least.

209 A movie about a skit on a show I hate that is a parody of another show I hate. Guess how likely it is I will see it.

211 I think people are fascinated with genius, and with math, specifically. Smart people are interested in it. Duller people...not so much. And even I have to admit that I'd rather watch big robots kicking the shit out of each other in Transformers than some mopey nutcase in A Beautiful Mind. I'd much rather read about geniuses; watching some egghead sitting at a desk for ten hours straight working out a new Riemann-Zeta function isn't all that visually compelling.

That would be fantastic.  And he was a major prick, on top of it, which would add some spice to the story.

Did you know that Newton calculated the end of the world, according to the New Testament, to be around 2009, or so?

Posted by: progressoverpeace at May 12, 2010 05:58 PM (Qp4DT)

213 Does "The Villain" count as a supporting character? That just reminded me of the old movie with Kirk Douglas and Ann-Margaret and pre-Conan Schwartzenegger. Not a great movie, but a pretty fun one for a rainy weekend afternoon.

Oops.  I just looked it up and they say he predicteded the end at 2060.  I remember seeing a documentary stating that they did some change on Newton's assumption of the re-emergence of the Roman Empire and put the date around 2009.

My mistake.

217 The only reason Turing gets any play on stage is the tortured gay-before-it-was-cool thing. There's enough material to make a really good biopic of Oppenheimer, I think. He was a very strange dude in a lot of ways, but interesting. Wolfgang Pauli is another scientist who had an interesting life-story. Still, it'd be uphill work to make a successful theatrical-release movie for any of these guys. I think it would play better on direct-to-DVD, or on one of the pay channels.

Posted by: HeatherRadish at May 12, 2010 10:03 PM (OkT2m)

But no one ever made a good Turing movie (or play) about his actual work and showing him solving problems.  I think that people do appreciate seeing the genius of problem solving, especially for situations they can understand (though I think there is an innate human appreciation for beautiful formulae).  Like in The Manhattan Project when the kid solves the puzzle Lithgow gave him by simply spinning it on the table.
