— DrewM Via Powerline, David Hogberg at Investors Business Daily takes a look at 20 ways the Senate health care and reconciliation bills make us less free.
Here are a few.
1. You are young and don’t want health insurance? You are starting up a small business and need to minimize expenses, and one way to do that is to forego health insurance? Tough. You have to pay $750 annually for the “privilege.” (Section 1501)2. You are young and healthy and want to pay for insurance that reflects that status? Tough. You’ll have to pay for premiums that cover not only you, but also the guy who smokes three packs a day, drink a gallon of whiskey and eats chicken fat off the floor. That’s because insurance companies will no longer be able to underwrite on the basis of a person’s health status. (Section 2701).
9. If you are a large employer (defined as at least 101 employees) and you do not want to provide health insurance to your employee, then you will pay a $750 fine per employee (It could be $2,000 to $3,000 under the reconciliation changes). Think you know how to better spend that money? Tough. (Section 1513).
16. The government will extract a fee of $2 billion annually from medical device makers. If you are a medical device maker what you will pay depends on your share of medical device sales in the U.S. So, if you sell 10% of the medical devices in the U.S., what you pay will be 10% multiplied by $2 billion, or $200,000,000. Think you, as a medical device maker, know how to better use that money, say for R&D? Tough. (Section 9009 (b)).
The reconciliation package turns that into a 2.9% excise tax for medical device makers. Think you, as a medical device maker, know how to better use that money, say for research and development? Tough. (Section 1405).
And on and on.
I find the penalty for not covering employees interesting. If it stays at $750, isn't every employer simply going to drop health coverage, pay the per capita fine and pocket the difference? That might not work in a boom economy where employers are competing for workers but in tight times like these, a job without insurance is better than no job at all.
Even at 2 or 3 thousand dollars per employee it might be worth it for some companies to dump health care coverage. I'm not sure what group rates are for big employers but I'd think it's got to be close to that number and then factor in all the costs associated with a company administering a plan, including all the HR types you could lay off and it's probably a money maker for companies.
Then you have to pay your the individual mandate fine for not being covered and/or go get your own policy. That policy will be heavily subsidized making you dependent on the government and adding to the cost of the program beyond what's already "budgeted".
Then we would hear from the left not that we should repeal this crap but that we need more government in the form of either a public option or single payer. The answer is never, ever less government, even when government is the problem.

It's cheaper than paying for their insurance, I can tell you right now. My employees are covered by the company. $750 is less than one months premiums. Shall we call this what it is...extortion.

He makes this sound like a bad thing. If I cut it down to 2 packs, half a gallon and only the chicken fat which isn't in direct contact with the floor is that okay?

Close? You wish. At only $3000 any business would be saving over $5000 per employee, more for family coverage.

Normally I would say you are right, but not in this economy. A business wouldn't do it arbitrarily but what if they are going under? It would make economic sense to tell employees it's no health care or the doors close. Since the government is going to take care of it, it's unlikely they would bring it back when times got better. Certainly new businesses have no incentive to offer health coverage when the government is going to offer it.

Don't forget, the IRS will be making sure you buy the "right" kind of coverage and check up on you from time to time to see that you've maintained it, or else pay another fine or penalty for failure to comply.
Anyone remember that link to a .gov website showing the IRS putting in a requisition to purchase several thousand shotguns? I believe they wanted the Remington 870 police model.

"even if the penalty is cheaper than the coverage? "
Small companies will be dropping people like flies. A commenter was discussing two friends that plan to drop all their employees. Pay the fine. Give every EE $1000 to cover normal Dr visits. If someone subsequently needs the insurance, they'll pick it up. IIRC, they'll save approx $500,000.
And if a lot of companies do that, what happens to the insurance pools? Premiums sky rocket. The Dims have really dug themselves a hole on this one.

I'm all but expecting it here at my job (approx. 25 employees).
Why wouldn't they? Employers won't have to offer medical coverage any more. They're not hanging their employees out to dry; there's government-provided health care for all now!
And this is how private insurance will disappear. Obama said we can keep the plan we have now. But if/when employers take our benefits away, well, that's not Obama's fault, right?

The thing is, its a long term plan to force insurance companies out of business and then once again big government will come to everyones rescue with a public govt option. Louise Slaughter basically said exactly just that, right after the vote last night, saying the war on insurance companies has just begun. Yesterday was just about getting the camel's head in the tent so to speak.

A new law also went into effect whereby parents are responsible for their debts also up until age 23. Oddly enough, the credit card companies could not wait to hand out credit cards during the first week at a brand new college for the brand new freshman. No. Absolutely not. But employee benefits like medical insurance get favorable tax treatment because they are purchased with pretax dollars. If the employee bought his own medical insurance, he would pay with after-tax dollars. Therefore, the employer can provide a form of compensation that has a higher value to the employee (compared to the cost of self-paid medical insurance) than it costs the employer.

IMO the only thing that has to be considered is who will be managing the cluster flop - the same people who have created the mess that required that something like this be aborted and then used to solve the insolvency created by medicare, social security, medicade, Fanie Mae, Freddy Mac, the Post Office, the Dept of Education, the Dept of the Interior, etc., etc.
They absolutely had to implement this or some capitalist solution or the system would have imploded.
Any capitalist solution would have been unpalatable because it would have meant dismantling programs that allow them to disguise their graft and corruption. Must'nt have that.

One of these things is not like the other, one of them just doesn't belong...

Can that be true? How can you know how many devices are to be sold? If all your competitors suddenly suck it you might get saddled with that? And WTF is a 'medical device'? Something to ponder on...
On 9/11/2001, this nation was attacked by Islamic terrorists. Their goal was, and still is, to destroy America. Osama Bin Laden was obsessed with bring down the Twin Towers - America's symbol of financial and economic prominence. Bin Laden sought to cripple America's economy with the destruction of the World Trade Center.
Seven years later, the United States elected a man named Hussein who was raised as a Muslin in a Muslim country. Now, this Muslim is going to finish the job from the inside. How could Americans be so blind? What would any of you said on 9/12/2001 if someone told you that 7 years later we would have a President named Barack Hussein? I dare say there would have been laughs at best and beat downs at worse. Simply amazing to contemplate...

I don't see the penalty making much difference, at least for existing employers. They already provided insurance when it was voluntary, so why would they drop it now that there's a penalty
Gosh, let me see, maybe because the asshat's in congress just added a boatload of new taxes and fees so that health care costs per empoloyee aren't just going to go up a little bit, but are going to skyrocket? Their average cost for insuring and employee pre Obamacare might have been say 2 grand, odds are good thanks to all the overhead, waste and abuse Obamacare adds to the system by design that will likely come close to doubling, if not tripling.
So why would any company keep health care benefits when it's so much cheaper to just offload them to the taxpayer? Short answer, they wouldn't. Which is exactly the effect this bill tries to produce.
They want single payer, and this bill is designed from the ground up to bankrupt the others, create a new "crisis" so they can fix it with.. guess what, single payer government run health insurance.
Welcome to a brave new world. Or as grandpappy would say, were he still alive to see perhaps the saddest day in our recorded history of a nation, "pass the ammunition boy. We'd best be preparing for a long, hard winter."

Hypothetically I run a small bank. I have 101 employees. My healthcare coverage for those 101 costs 500 a month. That is a total of $50,500x12 or $606,000 My industry is tanking. 5 banks in the state have been taken over, 70% of the rest are under MOU's, so they have to shrink their balance sheet- thus laying off loan officers and their support staff. I'm one of the remaining 30% that actual eeked out a small profit last year, but that is dwindling quickly as defaults rise.
If I dump my employee coverage, I pay a penalty of $75,750.
$606,000-75,750=$530,250. I save over a half a million dollars if I dump my employees. Straight to my bottom line. Furthermore, my staff would be lucky to find employment anywhere in the industry right now. Or probably anytime in the future. They ain't going no where.
Sign 'em up on universal healthcare. They deserve the best. That's what they voted for.
Obviously, if the penalty is rendered per month, forget what I just said, unless I pay more than 750 per month per employee. Then its back to the cost savings analysis.

I had a conversation a couple of days ago with the president of a company that I'm doing contract work for. We discussed health care costs and he speculates that he is paying roughly $8,000 per employee.
He said he would definitely consider dumping health insurance and paying the penalty if ObamaCare became a reality.

Awesome. He's my gov and just an hour ago I was bitching in an email to somebody, wondering where the hell was he?? (I'd still like to know why he thinks it's a "bad bill" since he was pushing for the Louisiana Purchase bribe behind the scenes, but I'll take what I can get...)
Louisiana to File Suit Over Health Care Legislation
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell says Louisiana will file a lawsuit challenging the national health care legislation passed by Congress Sunday.
Governor Bobby Jindal, who supports the move, said Monday that he believes the national health care bill approved by Congress Sunday is unconstitutional.
"It's a bad bill for Louisiana, a bad bill for America," Jindal said.
"This is a huge overreach," Jindal said during a Monday afternoon
news conference. "I believe it would violate the constitutional rights
of our people."

Glad to hear that some states are not going to take this outrage lying down. Unfortunately there are some states, like mine, that would sit on the sidelines and watch if all 49 (or 57) other states filed suit.
Yeah, Illinois (spit)

"It gets better. ObamaCare tax revenues will likely be raided to "strengthen" two other collapsing entitlement schemes; Social Security and Medicare."
And that govt take-over of student loans. Wanna bet the interest rates go up too?

Oh, America has been fundamentally changed? I'm old enough to remember the 1980 presidential election. Carter's worthless presidency was painful, and it took most of the four years to get people ready to kick him out. But Obama has the majority of the population angry at him now, barely a year into his term.
People are probably afraid to tell pollsters on the phone how they really feel about Obama himself, since the left is so quick to label anybody who doesn't love Obama as a racist. But the anger about healthcare destruction, the anger about the worthless stimulus programs and the continued high unemployment, the feeling that congress hates our guts and laughs at us, these things are not going to go away.
The media can only paper over this anger and the lack of jobs for so long. Homes are being foreclosed, the living is getting tough. It doesn't matter how high the casino known as the stock market goes, it doesn't have any positive effect on the average person's life.

I keep hoping that da yoot are gonna revolt against this. If the eeevil Republicans could peel away 10-20% of da yoot vote, it'd be tricky for the Dems to get elected."
Not bloody likely - what do you expect from voters who get their news from Jon Stewart?

Hell, yes, that's exactly what employers will do, and who can blame them? It's a business decision, and businesses exist to - say it with me, Libs - make money. $750 per employee is a bargain; the employer's portion of group health insurance can run into the thousands. So - if you're an employee who works for a company that suddenly drops its health insurance plan, guess where you're going to end up? Well, damn, looks like it's the public option for you. And there will be a public option. That's where this whole thing is leading, has been all along.

Yes, a lot of people my age ARE borderline communists, but there are also MANY people my age that are this close (index finger and thumb really close together, eyes squinting) to going up in arms against these tyrants.
I shit you not, if you give my generation a catalyst so we know that it really is open season on the traitors, you will be referring to guys my age as "The second Greatest Generation." If there is another war for freedom, the majority of the fighting will be done by young men like me, so don't count us out. We might have the occasional outspoken socialist in our ranks, but plenty of us are aware of what is going on and wouldn't even consider "letting our chains rest lightly upon us."

Does any anyone know which order of nuns went against the Pope, the church hierarchy and the Bishops?
Posted by: curious at March 22, 2010 03:47 PM (p302b)
Curious, the Corner at NRO had the info. I don't remember if it was an "order," per se, but kind of think it was some pseudo-religious independent coven of "Catholic" dikes.
Not that the Catholic bishops would denounce that sort -- I see them as about on par with Stupak, grinding their teeth at having to oppose Obamacare, and yeah, I'm Catholic, but I'm not blind.

Why does your employer even offer you coverage today?
Posted by: spamhead at March 22, 2010 02:45 PM (lMBos)
"Why does your employer even offer you coverage today?"
Because, as of right now, before this bill is signed into law, it is useful for attracting talent--employer-paid health insurance is paid with pretax dollars, and effectively reduces the recipient's taxable income. This is not the case if the employee buys his own health insurance.
After this bill becomes law, there is absolutely zero benefit--the employee is required to have health insurance, the employer gains absolutely nothing by providing it--it becomes significantly cheaper to pay the fine and leave the employee with the bill.
Also, with 10-24% unemployment (depending on which set of figures you believe), it's an employer's market for talent. Employees can be told "like it or not," and if the employee's answer is "not" then s/he becomes unemployed.
