— Ace Reality show?
Well, she actually says she'd "not necessarily be interested" in a reality show, unless it was a "watchdog" type program (that is, not a reality show at all), but she's also keeping options open.
Incidentally, since I just got burned by buying into MSNBC's and Scheck's spin, I'd like to point out that I did read this article beyond the headline. The headline claimed "O'Donnell Considers Reality Show," but in fact her answer indicates she's not considering that.
It always bothered me about Christine O'Donnell that she had, to my way of thinking, too big an appetite to be on TV. I view her various silly Senate bids through this prism: Ways to keep on television. To grab the spotlight.
I always got a strong "flake" vibe, not to mention a strong "dumb as a bag of hammers" vibe to boot.
I always viewed her as I viewed those failed comics and writers for Radar who infest every episode of Hey I Remember the 80s: People who were on television not due to any accomplishment or talent, but due to a confluence of two things: 1) 500 cable channels' insatiable hunger to videotape any human being willing to work for scale and then edit together in such a way that they can call it "content," and 2) quite a few people who desperately want to be involved in such ventures, just to say "Hey, I'm on TV."
I grant you Mike Castle was a RINO, of course. If that means you can't support him, even in Delaware, where only a RINO has a chance of winning, fine. I understand then you had no good choices and went with the one you thought at least had some upside to it. (Whatever that was.)
I'm just glad she's in the past.
But I sort of don't think she is. Not completely. Her whole adult life has been focused on getting into the limelight. I do not see this impulse abating at any time in the future.

Plus, if she can think of another fake campaign, she gets to legitimately drill into that campaign honey pot to pay the bills. Nice to have a slush fund for the unemployed times.

'a book or reality tv'.
world of difference there. a book could give her credibility (depending on what she wrote).
but reality tv?
there's just NO reason for that 'career' path. ever.
actually if she drops out of politics I wouldn't mind seeing her on one of the VH1 shows. she could go on a date with Ochocinco. I envision them playing the Ouija board.

Why should it? If Elliot Spitzer can get a show on CNN then why shouldn't she? Considering what is on television today could any logical argument be made there is a person who should not be allowed on tv?
(Whatever that was.)

It gives the salutary message to the next crop of Northeastern RINOs that they need at least to sign up to fiscal responsibility if they want to avoid being booted in their primaries. Seems like it's already giving Olympia Snowe a case of Fiscal Hawk Fever.

Thanks. It's always nice to have support.
Going to the Senate was a life time achievement award for Castle. He would have spent his time there concerned about one thing, his legacy. Well, his legacy consisted of a House career of stabbing the Republican party in the back 50% of the time and giving cover to the Dems. So we need have no illusions as to what course Castle would take. Frankly his record on guns alone should have been enough to warrant the state party to back a primary challenger years before. He was far more of a gun grabber than even the Dems in DE. If a party can not find itself capable of removing such a questionable member from office then the least that could be done is to prevent that person from being promoted.
Having Coons in office may hurt the progress of the R agenda but it does nothing but hurt the party. The exact opposite would be true for Castle.Posted by: Rocks at November 12, 2010 10:48 AM (Q1lie)

Why, oh why, is that when ever anyone anywhere makes any critical comment about COD the first (and only) line of defense is "Mike Castle sucks". Mike Castle is done. Seriously........can someone here please defend poor Christine without resort to the Mike Castle card? Seriously. This thread is not about the Delaware primary - that sucker is done. Its about a media attention craving, permanent candidate for life doing what she can to keep herself in the limelight. Which, from what I can tell, has very little to do with stopping the evil Mike Castle from trashing the republic.
Posted by: Mallamutt---
Who says I was defending COD?? I desperately wanted Castle to win the Delaware primary. I was just repeating a good point I had heard on the Ricochet podcast a few weeks ago, where one of Bush's speechwriters, Bill McGurn, said that as Caslte got older, he'd likely become more and more liberal.

Okay, I've never lived in Delaware. They elected Joe Biden, though, so they can't be very bright, can they? The choice between Castle and Coons was, do you want someone who supports Obama in almost everything, or someone who REALLY supports Obama in almost everything? Does principle mean nothing? It's kind of like a choice between being shot in the left side of the head, or the right side of the head. The end result is pretty indistinguishable for the chooser.

For the Castle haters, just remember we need 4 seats just to get a bare majority now. I love the idealism, but it is the motivation of teenagers.
Scott Brown is in trouble, Ensign is a time bomb and we could lose the Maine seat if amateurs and fools from half way across the country decide to back a right wing head of lettuce. And there are X factors.
We just won six seats with the wind at our backs. In 2012, we need 4 seats and possibly as many as 6 seats just to get to a bare minimum of 51, which is crap. You cant do anything with 51 Senate seats. Besides, the Senate will still have Collins, Graham,... and other imperfect Republicans.
Bottom line: We need numbers to repeal ObamaCare and other liberal crap.

Keep dreaming about your pure party, while ObamaCare takes root and becomes intractable. You can fight the Republican "establishment". I will fight for my Republic.

It isn't about "purity", it's about having Senators who vote with us more often than they vote against us. Castle is well to the left of the Maine Sisters, Lindsey Graham, and Arlen Spectre (before he switched parties). Manchin will vote with us twice as often as Castle would have. Besides, the winner of that race is just a placeholder until 2012 when Biden's kid steps up to take his proper place in the Pantheon of Dynastic Nepotism.

In the name of Christ in Heaven and Satan in Hell, this is pathetic. The snide comment about the Dealaware voters is particularly telling.
Poeple in Delaware have repeatedly tried to explain what happened here during the primary. Some of us begged for a change in tactics to secure Castle a victory. And the end result is this.
Combine a flawed candidate with a base pleasing list of positions (Ned Lamont anyone?) with an enraged party leadership and another candidate with a sense of entitlement (Leeeeeza Moocowski anyone?) and you get the primary we had. Take that winner into one of the shittiest media markets; fold in national support for a jerk who raised taxes repeatedly, and you get a Dem winning in a blue state.
But that is harder to chronicle than "she's nuts and dumb."
Here's a fun thought: the only outsiders who read the situation right in Delaware were the Democrats. The national punditry fucked up, as did the TPE.

It has the virtue of honesty. Obama, by contrast, claims his goal is to be the best one-term President ever, but his actions prove that he'd rather be golfing than be making any executive decision whatsoever.
I personally am not very impressed with politicians whose life goal is to be politicians and who seem to be addicted to office. We've got all sorts of term limits laws in California and all they accomplish is setting politicians on a perpetual merry-go-round of seeking other offices when they get term-limited out of the ones they're already in.

Defense of what exactly? If COD served only one purpose as a candidate, keeping Castle out of the Senate, she was a success. She did that. Why does success require a defense? COD AND Urqhart were clearly primary winners because the majority of the R party in DE is fed up with their leadership and wished to show that. They did. Again, success.
If you mean her attempts to stay in the limelight, and hopefully make some cash, I would say the same. What defense is needed? There are a 100 people who are far dumber, crasser and cruder than COD on TV and I don't remember reading about anyone being surprised by that. The repeal of ObamaCare will require compromise, but now it will require more compromise. We could probably get people Manchin, Landrieu, Pryor and other moderate Dems to build the necessary coalition.
If we took nine in 2010 and played our cards rights in 2012, we'd be in the mid to high 50s. But not now.
The whole chest thumping, repeal ObamaCare now if a bunch of crap. Defudning will only take you so far, the lawsuits are bunk and then you will have to use parliamentary tricks, which will also require a lot more then 51 or 52. Compromise with the Mike Castles now or try it with the Harry Reids later.

If a Republican is a slam dunk in any state, that's a sign that the Republican party and conservative people of that state should be looking for an electable, more conservative replacement for the primary process.
This goes for Senator Graham et al.
This doesn't mean "go teh stupid" in 100% of all cases. It is just that there should be serious efforts to primary most everyone most all the time. Christine was a mistake because she was flat unelectable. Fine. The key reason she was the slightest bit viable in the primary season is the Republican party's right flank was hanging out in the wind.
The exact same polls that pointed out "We should have gone with Castle, he was a slam dunk" are the same polls that should have meant "Wow, we should find someone 7% more conservative." Not "75% more conservative", just a smidge.
Adding 75% crazy is also just not the plan. I would have voted for Christine in the general because Senators aren't executives. But I would have voted for Castle (Or Graham, or most anyone with an "R" whatsoever) in the general also. Once the primary is FUBAR, you get what you get.

yes, sometimes in politics you hold your nose and bargain hard. Delaware was not Florida or Alaska--or even Colorado.
I know how much this hurts some of you, but you need to compromise sometimes. Compromising too much is Very Bad but losing the only possibility of a R Senate seat is worse.
the TP, if it wanted to de-throne Castle ( which I understand completely ) should have found a much better candidate. COD was and is a mess; Messes rarely win Senate seats, although Al Franken managed to steal one.

I agree about Graham but obviously, SC and DE aren't remotely in the same league. You need to consier that state and the candidate. Sometimes slam dunks are good and you take 'em.
As for the GOP's rightwing being out in the air in DE, the reason for that is when it comes the to general election it's not a significant factor. You don't pander to or worry about a segment of the electorate that means nothing to final victory.

Why is this always reduced to such ridiculous extremes? There was no guarantee Castle was going to win and considering the GOTV the Dems did in the NE I hardly think that DE would have done worse. At best Castle had a very tough fight on his hands.
As far as compromise I think the DE R voters made it pretty clear they have been doing that for 18 years with Castle and the idea of promoting him to the Senate was just a bridge too far. People are only going to hold their noses for so long. Sooner or later they need to stop. If party leaders expect to have a say in when that is then they had better offer better choices then Castle or COD. Otherwise don't bitch and moan.

I never implied that Coons will ever vote with us. My point is that people who vote with us less than half of the time are nothing but a drag on the party. They allow the Dems to put the "bipartisan" label on whatever piece of shit legislation they vote with them on.
I'm not asking that we only nominate people with a 100% ACU score in every state. I know there are places, in the northeast especially, where we have to settle for more moderate candidates. I'm not even sure about primary-ing Olypia Snowe, and I'm against primary-ing Scott Brown. But Castle isn't even close to being moderate, he's a flaming liberal. We need to find qualified people who are somewhere in between Castle and COD ideologically in states like DE.
In any case, I think the northeast is a lost cause with the exceptions of NH and ME, and we shouldn't worry about it too much. We should be more focused on the Midwest and Great Lakes. Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana all moved our way this year. If you told me two years ago that conservative Republicans would win WI-7 (Sean Duffy) and MN-8 (Chip Cravack) in the next election I would have laughed in your face.

While I think COD is an opportunistic free-loader, I'm not down with re-hashing election fights. I look at it as lessons for the future.
For the record, my beef is with amateur activists and idiotic idealists, who meddle in states they no little about (especially blue states) and fuck things up.
One good thing about Sean Bielat losing big and COD getting crushed is that I dont have to worry about a Scott Brown primary anymore because there really was a growing faction of retards calling for his head and looking for a primary opponent because he hasnt been Jim DeMint's wingman. These are the same idiots that almost fucked up NH by spreading lies about Kelly Ayotte in the waning weeks of the campaign to nominate Ken Buck... whoops I mean Ovide Lamongtagne. (That's not fair to Ken. Although both were too extreme for their states, Buck was not a washed up has been, who lost both a Congressional race and a gubernatorial race by double digits).

Perhaps it's time to get back to the 11th amendment. We have a common enemy that is far more dangerous than a Castle or an O'Donnell. It's actually a benefit that we don't control both the House and the Senate at this moment in time. We're in for rough times for the foreseeable future. If Obama and the MSM can blame the R's when they were in the minority with no power, imagine how bad it would have been if we were the majority in both houses with out the ability to overcome a Presidential veto. We would have needed a super majority in the Senate anyways and Delaware wasn't the 51st seat.

I think you might have mentioned this -- plainly -- several times before. I really don't think there's any confusion on this point, and I seriously doubt you're changing anyone's mind by rehashing it through the prism of a failed candidate that no one wants to hear about any more.
Find a new angle. Preferably after you concede that your bald, factless assertion that COD cost Angle and Buck their elections was either a cynical way to attract traffic or the emotive bleating of someone who has lost their objectivity.

I wont be suprised. She actually front paged one of my blogs on her campaign site. I was defending her from the Tea Party insurgency and she posted it.
Kelly committed the sin of being backed by Judd Gregg and the NRSC. Of course, to some, this meant she sucked and needed to be taken down for a two-time loser, who New Hampshire voters rejected twice.
Jim DeMint pumped 500,000K into that race. Worthless. A people wonder why there is a certain backlash.

Republicans on the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works have called on Barbara Boxer to hold hearings on BrownerÂ’s data doctoring. (Teaching moment: This illustrates one of the bennies of being in the majority, chairmanships. With chairmanships, you get to set the agenda.) I'm sure Boxer wll get right on it. [rdbrewer]
Yes, because it is vitally important we expose this fraud on CSPAN2 in front of a live and captivated audience of tens or even dozens of people.

The upside is, a Senator Castle would have been a worse strategic liability to the GOP than a Senator Coons. Say Castle won the primary and the general, and say we picked up 2 or 3 other Senate seats. Mike Castle becomes the most important man in the US Senate. The most likely defector in a split Senate always is. He can swing the Senate as a whole, and even the Senate GOP, to the left in a way that even Harry Reid couldn't in this term. He could provide a fig leaf of "bi-partisanship" to Obama and progressives in a cycle where there is a strong constituency in favor of fiscal conservatism. In a cycle, in fact, where even Rush Limbaugh is openly threatening a third party push next election if the GOP doesn't get their shit together and start balancing the books instead of just talking about it. Some degree of party purity is in fact a practical consideration for the next election.
I'm not a 30 seats in the Senate purist though. I backed Scott Brown even knowing he never was a hard-right conservative. I'd back someone even a step or two to the left of Scott Brown in a state like Delaware. Mike Castle is not such a man. He's a pro-cap and trade, black-listed by the NRA, big-spending, get along with Democrats "Republican." The point of primary-ing him was, first, to preserve the GOP brand, and second, to let the party leadership and "strategists" like Karl Rove know there are limits to what we'll accept. You (well, Rove and GOP headquarters, not you, Ace) want an anointed professional candidate, fine, but throw us a bone, meet us even a quarter of the way. Don't just recruit the party man who's next in line, and who, incidentally, you happen to owe a favor for past services rendered, and act surprised when the Tea Party rallies behind someone talking about fiscal conservatism.

I don't think Ace did. I think he's always been of the mindset of running and supporting the most conservative candidate that can win in the general. And that in the Delaware Primary, there was Castle, an obvious liberal, and O'Donnell, more conservative than the population of Delaware would like to vote for. I think you could say that Ace really wish he didn't have to pick Castle and that he would have loved a more reasonable conservative option but O'Donnell was just too much of an overshoot, so it was a case of go with the win, or go with principle.

OK, I read the article you posted and I can see why you think of her as a candidate. However, the "if" she stated leaves her a hole big enough to drive a bus through. I think her default position is 'not running," although I admit a big part of that is my wishful thinking
"If no one else is conservative enough, I'll run," is not the same to me as "count me in," or even "I'm exploring my options."
I like her a lot, but really hope she doesn't run. I don't think she can win, and I think she is far more valuable as an eminence grise, or as the conscience of the GOP conservative wing.

RD, it ain't nothing personal, but I'm just not eye to eye with you on these sort of issues any more.
Chairmanships are ultimately meaningless. So are elections, given the current dynamic. I have history books, you know. I recall the 20th century. It don't much matter which party you vote for, things move in one direction.
They didn't do it with chairmanships, and they didn't do it by always having majorities. It wasn't, strictly, even limited to the political.

Nominate a few more COD's and you won't have to even worry about the winning stuff - which should make it easy for you.
Yes - nominating and electing good conservatives should always be the goal. But, if the good electable conservative isn't available then I think I would rather have 1/2 a loaf than no loaf.
And again, you can't defend COD without resorting to the Mike Castle sucks card. You can't make an argument that she was a good candidate or that she had a chance to win. It is nothing more than "well...at least she isn't a RINO...she stands for something."

Why are we always presented with this ridiculous dynamic? As if candidates are chosen by the national party or something? You want to insure you have no more CODs? Then tell the people at a national level to do something about guys like Mike Castle. More importantly tell then to do something about the guys in control of the state parties who reduce the choice to something like Mike Castle VS COD by pushing a Mike Castle to begin with.
What other defense is needed? She won the primary didn't she? Mike Castle is not going to be a Senator. It didn't matter if she was a good candidate and everybody at least has some shot at winning. The women was a vehicle for DE R voters anger and she was a complete success at it. What other defense do you need exactly? At the very least she's lit a fire under the asses of the R voters in DE and put the fear of God into a state party that stopped wondering what their members thought about things years ago.. For the first time in 20 some odd years they cast a vote they thought actually meant something.
You say you'll take half a loaf. Fine. McMahon, Brown, Fiorina....these are half a loaf. Mike Castle was an old moldy loaf with the potential to spread that mold to the few good loaves you have and even worse you want to put him with your biggest best loaves. At some point you have to throw out that old moldy loaf. Even when you don't have another loaf to replace it.

I'm sorry but I just don't get where you are going here or what you expect me to say.
A warm bucket of spit would be a success if it beat Mike Castle in a primary.
And no I don't think she hurt any other candidates anywhere. It was dumb when Ace suggested it and it's dumb now. If the people of DE or CO want to elect a nut job it's their business. The average voter doesn't even keep well informed about their own candidates let alone those in other states.
Posted by: Rocks at November 12, 2010 04:15 PM (AoVGn)
Posted by: JEA at November 12, 2010 04:26 PM (MtFX9)
As far as I can determine, it was some Tea party people from outside the state donating money to her, along with a few talk radio hosts pointing out that Castle was really liberal and had ALREADY VOTED FOR CAP AND TRADE IN THE HOUSE. That meant he WOULD vote for it in the Senate.
That's meddling? What about sending money to Scott Brown or Michelle Bachman? What about columnists and talk radio people talking about Rubio and West in favorable terms.
The time to make the case against O'Donnell was before the primary. After she won, the only intelligent choice was to act like she was neater than sliced bread and save your criticisms until after the election , on the off chance that she might win.
But the criticism by establishment Republicans like Rove (who I still think worked for castle and was mad because he lost) and blogs never gave her a chance to try to capture that outside chance.
The Delaware voters voted for her. No one put a gun to their heads. She was the candidate. It was our responsibility to back her. Was she the sharpest knife in the drawer? Probably not, but AL FRANKEN got elected, and Patty Murray has the IQ of a turnip, so why worry about her flakiness or ijntellect.
The only important thing about her is that she would have voted AGAINST cap and trade and FOR extending the Bush tax cuts. She also would have been a vote FOR Obamacare's repeal.
This is all I have to say on this very tedious subject, which I agree with someone up thread is beginning to look like an obsession.
Maybe I should start a blog where once a week I gripe about how McCain wound up as the 2008 nominee. That was SUCH a success.

Oh I get it now. You expect me to say I agree with you because you keep repeating the same crap. Is there some evidence she hurt anything? Is there some exit poll showing it? Are the candidates who lost blaming her? As far as the soft squishy middle the majority of them didn't even know where their candidates stood on most issues let alone who the hell COD is.
This isn't a momentary thrill and lessons get taught each and every time people forget them. If you are going to keep running guys with a record like Mike Castle they better run as Democrats because they aren't going to win as Republicans.
And as far as her hanging around what do you think should be done about it?
I get it. She's just supposed to shut up and go away until you need her to vote for a Mike Castle I guess. Yeah I don't think she's going to do it. I don't expect many others will either.
And I know it's a long term game. Everyone does. They been playing your long term game and voting guys like Mike Castle into office for 20 years. At some point it stops. In DE and other places it was this year. In 2012 it will be other places. It doesn't matter who it's good for or batnds or anything else. it was good for those R primary voters when they marked that oval. It's the only good they are concerned with after 18 years of Mike Castle.
You really want to help the movement? Stop worrying about COD every time she says something and start getting some decent candidates to buck the systems in their states because if they keep pushing people like Mike Castle you are going to find yourselves kvetching over a whole new crop of COD in 2012.
You keep suggesting the lesson has been learned. Every time you go on about COD you make clear it wasn't. The lesson of COD was Mike Castle needed to not be a Republican senator. If you are still somehow thinking he should have been then you didn't learn the lesson.
Posted by: Rocks at November 12, 2010 06:12 PM (AoVGn)
'COD became a national joke. Please do not pretend she was anything other than a national joke.'
We, the electorate, are the National Joke. We who insist upon perfect candidates, such as Reid and Pelosi, are the joke. Those who get their clothes in a twist because a candidate isn't perfect are our real problem.
Politicians, in case some of us haven't noticed, are not perfect even though they are perfect candidates. Some, who aren't perfect candidates, may very well be perfect politicians.
Most folks won't even run for office due to our stringent requirements. We lose.
COD did, in fact, rid our body politic of one progressive, Castle. That's success enough for me. Those of you playing coulda, shoulda and woulda have nothing to show for your efforts.

Especially the COD sock puppets. Kinda huffpo's the place up a bit. Maybe Ace can hang a few of the old Chimpy McHitlerburton posters up to go with that.
Why do you believe the electorate is somehow to be controlled into voting for whoever would have won "us" the Senate? Good luck with that. If you could just look around to see that this Tea Party you are so bent on hammering (for being "purists" or "stupid" or whatever accusation makes you happy today) was the prime mover in this election, maybe you'll realize this isn't the same old game.
It stopped being about "Republicans" a long time ago. But you go ahead and play that tune. Go on and make fun of people for getting behind a return to smaller government. Sell that soothsayer's line of snake oil about "building a team" and "biding your time" and "Sarah should run for dogcatcher, 'cause that will drive the Libs crazy." At some point you may just catch on that your accordion is leaking, and the band you're in has no rhythm.
It would be more productive to reward good behavior. Like congratulating the newly elected and then voting in better ones whenever you can. But if you can't manage that, it would be nice if you'd stop the freaking attacks. A while back this place was generating a whiff of "Free Republic," and that was worrysome enough. Now the place seems more like Little Green Intolerance Balls.
No rhythm. That has to be the worst.
