— Ace On the plus side, next year we get to draw districts about as ugly as this.
Except in some places -- like Illinois. Damn, we just voted Phil Hare out of his horribly gerrymandered district, and now Illinois is going to redraw it to move Bobby Schilling's home out of the district he represents (and make other mischief, such as including more liberal voters there to give a liberal a chance to win it back).
On the upside, though, we'll be doing a lot more drawing.

Seems a computer could come up with solutions--input the population of each township (racial makeup unimportant), superimpose a grid or radial slices over each state, and bump out the boundaries by complete townships until all districts have roughly the same population.
Of course, the fighting over which state's university's comp sci dept. gets the (over-inflated) federal contract will take the next ten years. But there's probably a thousand young nerds who would it do it for Mt. Dew and pizza.

It is the same as having a state. You don't have a state for federal representation. That is a side effect. You have a state so you can have state laws. The county is the smallest form of sovereign governorship in the US. Cities are not given sovereign authority under the old English Common Law the County is, so when we established the US system we followed suit. Therefore the highest lawman in the City of Los Angeles, is the Los Angeles County Sheriff. Keep that in mind. If you are friends with your County Sheriff, you have far fewer problems with laws.

I can understand some of them. Like the NC one that covers my beach place in Atlantic Beach. The islands down there have similar interests and outlooks, and they're close to each other. Yeah, they're connected by water, but islanders deserve representation too. People didn't really live on islands back in the day, the rule should be updated. Preferably with some actual statue, not just with "evolving interpretations", but it's fair to put islands together with their closest mainland district.
Now, then you have the case with VA-3, a couple blocks from me. That should have been mentioned in the article. 4 separate areas, connected by the James River. Of course, its DOJ mandated majority-minority district. Surprise.

A few years ago the CO Repubs won the state house and were set to do the redistricting. Dems threw a fit, stalled the process and eventually a Dem leaning entity got to do the redistricting. Can't remember all the details.

Damn, we just voted Phil Hare out of his horribly gerrymandered district, and now Illinois is going to redraw it to move Bobby Schilling's home out of the district he represents (and make other mischief, such as including more liberal voters there to give a liberal a chance to win it back).
Point of order - there is no Constitutional requirement to "live" in the district one represents, just the state one represents.
