7 Minutes Vs. 16 Hours: How The Media Reports Delay
— Ace

George Bush was relentlessly mocked for waiting seven minutes (actually waiting for his security detail to ready the exit and for his vehicle to be readied) before leaving the school he was visiting. He calmly finished reading My Pet Goat for the kids before going to his now-ready helicopter.

On the other hand, after Obama was told (most likely for the fifteenth time) that the CIA was really, really, really quite confident that Osama bin Ladin was at that compound in Abbottabad, he decided he needed to sleep on it.

Sixteen hours later (hours during which Osama might have fled-- bear in mind, his courier's name had just been outed by WikiLeaks), he made up his mind.

How does the media report this? Well, relying upon those in Obama's inner circle (that is to say, his political flunkies and spinners), we're told this:

"But the next morning after 16 hours, Obama summoned four top aides to the White House Diplomatic Room. Before they could speak, the president put his fist on the table and declared 'It's a go'."

Why does it matter that he did this "before they could speak"? They had spoken already yesterday when they strongly, strongly urged the president to give the order, and he had decided to sleep on it.

They were only waiting on him, after all.

So, after 16 hours of vacillation, during which the operation might have been rendered a failure by intervening invents, he fist-bumps a piece of furniture and finally makes up his mind.

This is something to brag about? This is, in Howard Fineman's words, "almost Biblical"?

Seems like a very cautious, feckless, indecisive individual delaying and delaying on critical decisions and then attempting to sound heroic when he finally does what he's being paid to do.

Thanks to OCBill. This is from the Daily Mail, via Drudge.

To Be Honest: I don't begrudge a president some thinking time before a big decision.

But the media still hasn't explained to me which of the previous presidents and which of the potential/hypothetical future presidents wouldn't have ordered this.

If everyone including Jimmy Carter would have ordered this, then I'm afraid I don't see why President Made a Poopie should be so praised for doing what everyone else would have done. That is, why praise him for being ordinary?

And yes, even Jimmy Carter probably would have ordered this. At least the 1970s version Bear in mind: He did order a failed hostage rescue attempt -- also fraught with peril, obviously, since the choppers crashed in the desert.

A commando hostage rescue is a lot trickier than a hit, of course. A lot more moving pieces, and you have to get all those people safely away.

So why should I praise Obama for a choice that every single one of his predecessors and every plausible successor would also make?

And probably not requiring 16 hours to do so, either.

A thoughtful, intelligent thing?

What is there to "sleep on", exactly?  Whether or not capturing/killing Osama Bin Laden is a good thing?  Whether or not we should act on the soil of a nation doing its best to protect him?  Does our Muslim-sympathizing knee-jerk pacifist President really need to wring his hands over these no-brainers?  If so, we are in so much more trouble than we ever thought.  Yeah, he made the right call this time (on a yes/no question 16 hours later).

Also, if I found out that BO could have gotten OBL and didn't, I would be pretty curious as to why he didn't and I venture to guess a lot of Americans, yes even the libs, would get downright angry to think that they "lost him yet again".   So he was not in the best position on this.

Just more bullshit.

I'm supposed to believe that they were, at least, 96% sure in February that the goatfucker was in that compound.   The SEAL team built a mockup of the compound and spent a month practicing for going in.   deWon had a whole 5 meetings (snarc) since March, because he was in total control and command of the situation.   BUT, he needed 16 hours to sleep on it before he made the final decision?  He did all that planning himself we are supposed to believe, but he, after 2 or 3 months of meticulous control, still needed 16 hours to sleep on his decision.

Yeah, the asshole is a pussy, and he was dithering.   He was basically told he didn't have a damn choice because if it was ever found out that he was a pussy and didn't kill the goatfucker when he had a chance, it would be the end of the messiah.

As for the report of him slamming his fist on the table, and pronouncing it was a go...well, I suppose he's the only president in the history of the US that his administration ever allowed him to take credit and manufacture an out for.

Now, I don't mind violating that in this specific and rare case, but I can see that it would give pause. Quarterbacking after the fact when we have the certainty of the outcome is pretty weak.

Finally, on the day of the big fight, he was almost killed but just when all appeared lost, his 16 hours of training paid off and he smote Drago. That was my favorite part of the bible.

Instead I think he should have the media bid for first look at the picture and again, donate the money to reduce the debt of America and let them look at it and vouch for it's authenticity and then that's that.  If you don't trust the media, have representatives from the republicans, the dems, the libs, the conservatives, the green party, the tea party, the conspiracy blogs, anyone who has a vested interest, there for the unveiling and they can vouch for it.  then it's done and the "reduce the debt" fund gets a nice donation.

Other than that, I guess I dislike the man enough as he is now to not worry so much about his origins... which is to say, I guess, that I am as satisfied as I expect to be that he is constitutionally qualified for office.

Joint Chiefs: Mr President. We have very solid intell and a visiual on a guy we've been tracking for years that's Osama's courier. We've never been more sure and have had numerous sources and background on this. We've been working this for years. We have a plan formulated and are ready to go on your command.

POTUS: And you're pretty sure?

Joint Chiefs: Mr. President, it's the most sure we've been in years.

POTUS: And you have a good plan?

Joint Cheifs: Yes Mr. President. We have seal team 6 ready to go on your command and we will go kill Osama Bin Laden.

POTUS: Uuum, I, well, you see, uuumm, I uh, well. Let me sleep on it......

182 According to rdbrewer's link in the Headlines:

"The following day, and with PanettaÂ’s permission, Clinton met in private with Bill Daley and urged him to get the presidentÂ’s full and open approval of the Panetta plan.  Daley agreed such approval would be of great benefit to the action, and instructed Clinton to delay proceeding until he had secured that approval.  Daley contacted Clinton within hours of their meeting indicating Jarrett refused to allow the president to give that approval.  Daley then informed Clinton that he too would fully support Panetta in his actions, even if it meant disclosing the presidentÂ’s indecision to the American public should that action fail to produce a successful conclusion.  Clinton took that message back to Panetta and the CIA director initiated the 48 hour engagement order.  At this point, the President of the United States was not informed of the engagement order – it did not originate from him, and for several hours after the order had been given and the special ops forces were preparing for action into Pakistan from their position in Afghanistan, Daley successfully kept Obama and Jarrett insulated from that order.

This insulation ended at some point with an abort order that I believe originated from Valerie JarrettÂ’s office, and was then followed up by President Obama. This abort order was later explained as a delay due to weather conditions, but the actual conditions at that time would have been acceptable for the mission.  A storm system had been in the area earlier, but was no longer an issue.  Check the data yourself to confirm.  Jarrett, having been caught off guard, was now scrambling to determine who had initiated the plan.  She was furious, repeating the acronym “CoC” and saying it was not being followed.  This is where Bill Daley intervened directly.  The particulars of that intervention are not clear to me beyond knowing he did meet with Jarrett in his office and following that meeting, Valerie Jarrett was not seen in the West Wing for some time, and apparently no longer offered up any resistance to the Osama Bin Laden mission.  What did follow from there was one or more brief meetings between Bill Daley, Hillary Clinton, a representative from Robert GatesÂ’ office, a representative from Leon PanettaÂ’s office, and a representative from Jim ClapperÂ’s office.  I have to assume that these meetings were in essence, detailing the move to proceed with the operation against the Osama Bin Laden compound.  I have been told by more than one source that Leon Panetta was directing the operation with both his own CIA operatives, as well as direct contacts with military – both entities were reporting to Panetta only at this point, and not the President of the United States.  There was not going to be another delay as had happened 24 hour earlier.  The operation was at this time effectively unknown to President Barack Obama or Valerie Jarrett and it remained that way until AFTER it had already been initiated.  President Obama was literally pulled from a golf outing and escorted back to the White House to be informed of the mission."

7 Minutes? 16 Hours?

Instead of: "But the next morning after 16 hours, Obama summoned four top aides to the White House Diplomatic Room. Before they could speak, the president put his fist on the table and declared 'It's a go'." -- maybe it was more like: "the next morning, a full day after an attempted abort and thirty hours after Panetta said, "go", Obama summoned four top aides to the White House Diplomatic Room and said, 'you bastards are doing it without me? It's a go?'"

183 I am sorry, but if you run for president in 2008, and tell your CIA guy that Osama is priority #1, then you shoudl already have that decision made up in your mind. Whether to bomb or use men, yes, that could take a couple of hours. (Really 30 minutes with good advisors tops, because you can be sure they have thought of this stuff before.) Its not as if we randomly chose 5 people to make the decision who had to review the evidence and come up with a plan.

186 Assuming that we had known since August about this compound, I would guess we were watching it to the best of our ability (no idea what that actually means, though) and hoping to develop even more intelligence.  The idea is that if Osama had been there for five years, he probably wasn't going to go anywhere unless something spooked him.

Now lets say his courier's name comes out in Wikileaks.  Ok, fine.  If I am Osama, I look at that and say .... so they have known his name for at least a year or more and haven't got me so far, they must still not know where I am.

My guess would be that something changed in some way in the routine at the compound that gave some indication that Osama might be preparing to move.  Or maybe we really weren't able to watch the place very closely and simply decided to go lest he become spooked.  But it seems obvious to me that *something* had certainly increased the urgency that something needed to be done *now*.

The combination of that wikileaks report *and* the capture of the other guy in Abbottabad might be enough to make me nervous.    Oh, and did anyone else notice in those pictures of the compound, in the separate area where the "trash burning area" was, that there appeared to be piles of dirt?  Wonder if they had started digging a tunnel or something.

But then, it is more likely that the terse and manly snappy phrase came from a media wonk after having been successfully tested by a focus group of "Independent" voters. 208 As far as Obama ordering something any other president would have ordered. That is assuming the other presidents would ALSO have directed the head of the CIA to prioritize the search and that when it started to produce results, to continue to develop the plan, attending 5 high level meetings about the plan. Granted Clinton tried really hard. The funny thing about this is he actually suggested something on this order to the head of the joint chiefs, and got ridiculed by non other than Richard Clarke in "Against All Enemies". Point being that the capacity of the special ops forces has dramatically increased over the years. Neither Clinton nor Obama did anything to curtail that. When he had the chance to carry out his campaign plan, he did. VERY carefully. Bush hung out in an Elementary School for at least a half hour while Air Force One, completely designed and outfitted for POTUS to maintain his duties during an attack, was 10 minutes away.

217 Praise for Obama's making this decision (in 16 hours) is really a deep insult.

In order to praise him for doing this, one's assumption must be that he's a complete idiot, a rabidly anti-American ideologue, an incredible pussy, or more than one of the above. If one assumes that he's not completely stupid, his sense of patriotism is at least neutral, and that he has the backbone of an eel, then there'd be no reason to praise him for making this call.

225 16 freaking hours while the Seal team is waiting, anything could have happened during his little "time out" routine. I agree, even freaking Carter would have pulled the trigger faster.

Seriously, you think waiting 7 minutes when you're on defense is less troublesome than waiting 16 hours to make the final call on an offensive action, where the other side doesn't know it's coming?

Really?  I kind of doubt most soldiers would agree, perhaps none, since the type of soldiers who just sit tight while they're under attack don't live to voice their opinions.

227 Oh, now I get it. You're 12 years old. And stupid. And a spaz.

228 I know you hear this all the time, Ace, but you really are astoundingly stupid, even for a conservative.

That'll never happen.  Shitbags like Ace never own up to their mistakes.

"So why should I praise Obama for a choice that every single one of his predecessors and every plausible successor would also make?"

Since the Ace O would never "praise Obama" for anything, ever, that's a moot point.

Furthermore, if you can't identify the difference between "a plane just crashed into the WTC" and "we're 60 to 80 percent sure that Bin Laden is in a house in Pakistan not far from the country's top military academy," then analogies must not be your thing, and I'd hate to see your SAT scores. if(typeof(dstb)!= "undefined"){ dstb();}

232 "George Bush was relentlessly mocked for waiting seven minutes (actually waiting for his security detail to ready the exit and for his vehicle to be readied) before leaving the school he was visiting."

This is hokum. Bush himself said that he didn't want to alarm the kiddies, so he foolishly stayed right where he was. The Secret Service should've/could've (& presumably would've very much preferred to have) hustled Bush's ass out of that school & footballed him into his limo in ninety seconds flat. There'd already been a highly suspicious prior incident there with a surprise-visit from a "film crew" who vamoosed after trying  very hard to get an audience with him. That seven-minute delay was bizarre in the extreme, as was the later FUBAR of having Air Force One circle around for ages in one place like a sitting duck.

B-b-b-but those 16 hours that changed nothing MIGHT HAVE BEEN CRUCIAL!!!!!1111111111111!!!!!!!

Straws: you are clutching at them.

16 hours? How about SEVEN YEARS of Bush pretending to give a damn, oh, wait, no, sorry - Bush came right out & said "I don't think about him much" after about three years, & dissolving the CIA's OBL Unit was sort of a tip-off there too, come to think of it.

President Obama promised to get Bin Laden in 2008, & he delivered. Bush made no such promise because other than as a convenient boogeyman, he simply didn't give a rat's ass about him, period. Pretty rich to see the usual suspects try to shake some of the credit off on Bush after he himself literally shrugged & walked away.

Yeah, infantile garbage like President Made A Poopie tells me just how credible you are. One of the great moments of triumph in American history, & your response is to sulk & whine on the Interwebs.

Thanks for failing. AGAIN.

233 Jesus keerist you people are so full of crap. Obama could cure cancer and you assholes would bitch about it. Each and every one of you douchebags need to STFU and pull your heads out of your collective asses. What a pathetic group of ignorant morons.

234 I'm amazed at how knowledgeable people who were nowhere near the actual situation, with maybe 5% of the facts about the whole deal, are able to know exactly how their fearless leader should have handled it. What a shame so many of the fine minds here, completely unclouded by ideological prejudices, aren't in the command loop.

HA HA AHA AHHHAAA!

Thanks for the laugh!

It takes 23 minutes for an ICBM to reach the U.S. from Russia, no-one said "planes are flying into buildings" Andy Card said "America is under attack".

WHAT PLANES FLEW INTO BUILDINGS IN THE LAST 4 YEARS BESIDES THAT RIGHT WING IDIOT WHO ATTACKED THE IRS????

Obama dithered for "16 hours"????

BUSH DITHERED FOR 7 YEARS AND LET OSAMA GET AWAY TO GO ATTACK IRAQ!

face it, your hero W is an abject failure, GDP, national debt, average wages, employment, home ownership ALL FAILURES ON HIS WATCH.  And Mr. Dead or Alive Mission Accomplished COULD NOT CATCH OSAMA IN 7 YEARS.

LOSERS!
