9.1% Unemployment, The New Norm
— Dave in Texas

Obama is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure. Let's get that right out there.

WeÂ’ve been within 0.2 points of 9% since January, sometimes a bit higher, sometimes a bit lower, but essentially going nowhere. Just like Tim Geithner predicted 18 months ago...

So when the Obama administration tells you things are “unexpected” or “worse than we thought,” remember that they’ve known exactly what would happen for 18 months. And they did nothing. Or at the least, they did nothing useful.

FIAF STORY BONUS: via Stacia, the tales of a modern day nomad. "I have single-handedly created two international incidents and have been an element of three others." I'm only up to Thailand so I don't know if the international incidents were in Afghanistan or Arkansas.

That poll seems a bit of a stretch. Not that I am not glad that Mittens is behind. But that Cain has a 20% lead? I don't know. Sure it's possible but I wonder if it's an anomoly. In fact I was wondering about all these huge swings in polls. One minute Perry is way ahead, a shitty debate performance and he's done. Bachman is tied with Romney and now she's at 3% Etc. Etc. WTF? Do people change their minds that rapidly? The polls just seem to be all over the place.

Obama Fundraiser Pushed Solyndra Deal From Inside

An elite Obama fundraiser hired to help oversee the administration's energy loan program pushed and prodded career Department of Energy officials to move faster in approving a loan guarantee for Solyndra, even as his wife's law firm was representing the California solar company, according to internal emails made public late Friday.

"How hard is this? What is he waiting for?" wrote Steven J. "I have OVP [the Office of the Vice President] and WH [the White House] breathing down my neck on this."

Romney could do what he always does and renounce his former stance, but I'm not sure that'd be all that credible. Which leads in to the larger issue of where Romney gets his support from in the first place. Polls are coming out that show it's from blue states, that is: blue state Republicans prefer Romney - but they live in states where Republicans never win. I 'spose you can argue this both ways, but one of those is disaster.

It looks like it's a reciprocal thing.  I believe that the LDS Church doesn't recognize non-LDS baptisms and most (all?) of the major apostolic Christian sects don't recognize LDS baptisms.  I believe part of it has to do with their very different concept of the Trinity (they seem to reject it) as well as what seems to be a rejection of the apostolic foundations of the modern Church.

As far as I'm concerned, they recognize the divinity of Christ, so I'd call them Christians.  But I admit I am not too keen on delving very deeply into their specific beliefs, because it's my understanding (from talking with folks well-connected in the LDS church) there are some pretty anti-Catholic roots.

All I care about is how people treat me and others.

#191 - taking shots at a candidate's religion should be off limits.  Hopefully it was someone not connected with the Perry campaign.

As for the Romney blue states thing - Romney is more moderate than Perry so he picks up more support in the more moderate states (purple and blue).  As stated here recently the issue boils down to a) Perry can win the red states but can he win purple states vs b) Romney can win purple states but does that cause a problem with red states?

Posted by: nobama12 at October 07, 2011 12:52 PM (ykY2u)

194 This could say something on what Mormons believe, and it says something about Values Voters too, but I'm undecided on whether it's a bad thing: "The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. " http://tinyurl.com/akrwhz

195 @205 "Cult" has connotations outside of it's original definition, everybody knows that

(If you're responding to me) I guess my point about relevancy is simply this: if someone holds a commonly held view (which it's my understanding based on polls I've seen reported is the case, justifiably or not) about someone's religion, it's relevant to them, certainly, but it is not relevant to anyone who doesn't make their decisions about hiring based on someone's religion.  So, if anything, I suppose it could help Romney by weakening the strength of the Southern Baptist Conference leader's endorsement amongst people who find that guy's opinion offensive.

Cult is certainly a loaded term, but all that matters is what weight each individual chooses to place on someone's religion.

Posted by: Y-not at October 07, 2011 01:01 PM (5H6zj)

196 Did I miss the link to the details or if not, can anyone link?

Lincolntf is reporting a tweet(s) he read from the Hill.

I could not find what he read reported at the Hill's website, but I tried to provide context by pointing out that the Hill reported that Perry was not going to be introduced by a "surrogate," but rather by the leader of the Southern Baptists who is planning on endorsing Perry.

Unless there's some evidence that Perry is running around saying Mormons drowned puppies, I really don't see the relevance.  It is commonly known that many Christians do not consider LDS to be true Christians.  That's kind of just life.

I don't think it benefits Romney's campaign to make an issue of this incident (even if it did happen, which I still don't know is the case) since it plays right into the questions about Mitt's electability.

Posted by: Y-not at October 07, 2011 01:06 PM (5H6zj)

197 208 Cult is certainly a loaded term, but all that matters is what weight each individual chooses to place on someone's religion.

I think many voters are more comfortable with a candidate who has relatively mainstream, generic religious views but there is evidence that they really do not care about the details of those views.

Many evangelical Christians term any religion with a focus an individual  (?) outside of the Trinity as a cult. That would include LDSism (Joseph Smith) and Islam (Mohamet or whatever this month's preferred spelling is).

198 I think this is The Hill article referred to.

199 Great link Tami.

"“As evangelical Christians, we understand that Mormonism isn’t Christianity and thus the difference between someone who is good and moral like Mitt Romney and a true follower of Christ [like Perry],” Jeffress told reporters after Perry’s speech. “I think the decision for conservative evangelical Christians right now is going to be, do we prefer somebody who is truly a believer in Jesus Christ or somebody who is a good moral person but is a member of a cult? And it’s not politically correct to say but it is true: Mormonism is a cult.”"

So it was not something said during the introduction, it was said in a presser afterwards.  To me, there is no impact on Perry.  If this minister chooses to make an issue of it, that's his business.

Yeah, that's my impression.

I confess that the way I was raised (Roman Catholic) we spent absolutely no time critiquing/analyzing/whatever other peoples' religions.  We were taught RC is the one true faith.  End of story.  In other words, my parents would have been just as freaked out if I became a Lutheran as they would if I became a Latter-Day Saint.

202 Governor Perry now playing the old 'I don't say it's a cult, HE does - but I'm not judging him'. Which - and here I'm agreeing with Y-not - is pretty much the only way to go with this. He's not saying Mitt's a closet thespian sympathizer, but others who do, he's not going to judge them. He's not saying Mitt fathered a black baby - oopsie, got my campaigns mixed up - but others who do, he's not going to comment on. Anyone fearing Governor Perry doesn't understand politics ain't tiddlywinks can rest easy. As he said, once he's in, he's in to win.

Based on that article there is nothing to this as I see it. That has been their view of Mormons since there have been Mormons. Of course the language would have been a bit more harsh in the past.

I am sure that there are some who will not vote for a Mormon candidate because of his religion but that is nothing new.

204 @215
Well, my impression is that the guy was speaking as a minister of his particular faith.  I mean, he makes a point of saying that Romney is a good man -- just not a good Christian.  I don't know if it will sway anyone.  I certainly don't give a rat's ass.

I mean, the Pope himself could stand up and expound on the ins and outs of Evangelicalism, the LDS faith, or what-have-you and simply would not rate on the give-a-shit-meter when I cast my vote.

208 Lincolntf,
My read of the article Tami linked is that they are trying to gin up controversy.
Do you think Perry should reject the endorsement based on what the guy said at the presser afterward?

Posted by: Y-not at October 07, 2011 01:22 PM (5H6zj)

209

I also agree this appears to be a nothing item so far.  My statement at #204 was more general in that religion should be off limits in campaigns.

#215 - Perry does seem to punching back much harder at Romney. I just hope he doesn't pull the Mormon card in order to get the GOP nomination.

210 Hano's self description: "... I'm normally pissed or on my soapbox about something involving the idiocy of politics. I'm pretty liberal and extremely impatient... I can be a bit vulgar... I'm very opinionated and, lots of the time, full of shit." Man, you could have just stopped at "I'm pretty liberal."

I agree, let's keep religion out of this, which is one reason I rejected Cain.  I can't forgive him for his 'won't hire Muslims' comment.

I really dug around Perry's background before signing on because, frankly, my best friend now is LDS and I am living in Utah.  I could not find any public evidence of Perry having a "Mormon problem."  Now, whether or not in the context of his faith he believes stuff about the LDS faith that I disagree with, I can't say.  I know he believes in a much more literal interpretation of the Bible than I do, but I am at peace with that.  I can't hold Perry's Evangelical faith against him any more than I can hold Romney's beliefs against him.

213 Who is "They"? The media/TheHill/Politico? I'm not sure that anyone is making a big deal of it, just observing. Being a Romney supporter I've become more wary of stealth Religious tests for Office. Obviously Perry isn't responsible for everything his Emcee says, so I'm more curious about the speaker's views than Perry's.

Posted by: Lincolntf at October 07, 2011 01:32 PM (uIz80)

214 I don't think Perry is anti-Mormon any more than he is racist.  His past shows no evidence of it.  Any time you have a religious leader endorse you, you take the chance that they are going to get carried away in their endorsement and push their beliefs while endorsing.  I was raised Baptist and they definitely consider the Mormon religion a cult.

Posted by: Old Texas Chick at October 07, 2011 01:34 PM (lLXZV)

215 226 Who is "They"? The media/TheHill/Politico?

They is the people who authored the article - The Hill.  As you pointed out, they introduced the term surrogate.

If the original tweet is as you reported, then there has been an injustice done to Perry, because the cult comment came after Perry's speech during the minister's press conference, not during the introduction as reported.

Posted by: Y-not at October 07, 2011 01:34 PM (5H6zj)

216 224 I agree, let's keep religion out of this, which is one reason I rejected Cain.  I can't forgive him for his 'won't hire Muslims' comment.

I think this is a dead horse now but...

I would prefer Cains with his view that he would be reluctant to appoint a Muslim to his cabinet than the idiocy we have been stuck with for the past 10 years. Bush was inviting every prominent terrorist-supporting Muslim leader in the country for White House meetings accompanied by asinine statements about the hijacking of Islam.  He was clueless (in part, surpisingly, to his particular blend of Christianity) which is why we spent fruitless years trying to bring Western-style democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan.

220 "222 ... Perry does seem to punching back much harder at Romney. I just hope he doesn't pull the Mormon card in order to get the GOP nomination." Whatever it takes. With Perry, you can either lose or you can win. With Romney, you can lose outright, or you can think you won, and found out you really lost. Today Romney said this: "I will reverse President ObamaÂ’s massive defense cuts" which is fine, except if Mitt gets the nomination, he's gonna get asked in the general election debates why he said that when the U.S. government defense budget increased by 7.5% from '08 to '09 (which was really President Bush, since the budget's done the year before), then increased by 5% from '09 to '10, then increased from that by 11% from '10 to '11 (and is forecast by the General Accounting Office to go increase in 2012) - & what's he going to say? I never said that? It was in a keynote speech on defense. I was misquoted? It's on YouTube, and it's in the text of the speech. He's going to have to back down, or admit he didn't know what he was talking about, or admit he lied to get the Republican nomination, and no matter how it goes, it's not going to fill voters with confidence that they sleep easy knowing Mitt's the commander in chief. While Mitt was door-knocking in Paris, Perry was flying C-130s in the Middle East. I'm saying Governor Perry has too much respect for the military to have made such a bonehead move.

Posted by: Rex the Wonder God at October 07, 2011 01:56 PM (vahvH)

221 207 This could say something on what Mormons believe, and it says something about Values Voters too, but I'm undecided on whether it's a bad thing:

"The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. "
__________

Mostly, it says that it's harder to find a convenience store in Utah that sells pron.

Posted by: Anachronda at October 07, 2011 01:57 PM (xGZ+b)

222 Also, I don't believe that Perry is racist, or anti-Muslim (He's had them in the Governor's mansion, for the start of Ramadan.), or anti-Mexican, or anti-Mormon, or anti-anything other than Obama and Democrats. Even Cain doesn't believe Perry is racist, and if Cain understood how hunting lease interests worked, he couldn't even have raised that crap about "insensitive" (but if Cain happened to be a stalking horse for Mitt, yes he still would have raised it, regardless; and Cain's whole life has been spent in the kind of corporations Mitt's millions were made off of, so ... I'm just saying, it's odd how every time Cain opens up with any criticism of any other candidate and then has to apologize, it always just happens to be Perry.).

225 toby, I'm trying to figure out that chart. If it starts out in January 2007, that means the thing bottomed January 2009 & went up since, not much, in stuttering clusterfucks of a miserable failure steps, but nonetheless up. That can't be: the economy lost hundreds of thousands of net jobs per month well into 2009. If you take the right side extreme of the red line for the "2007" recession and assume that is October 1, 2011, the recession is shown starting April 1, 2008 - six months before the panic on Wall Street that led to TARP. That puts the economy in free fall when the SCofMF comes in January 2009, then the bottom in May 2010, then a baby peak in the middle of the census - but even after that, the line goes up, hits & passes that same baby peak in spring 2011, then starts to climb. But that can't be right, because it shows the bottom coinciding the end of the last Bush administration budget and recovery after that, and Romney says the SCofMF took what Bush did "and made it worse". Please don't tell me this is yet one more thing that Romney said just to get the nomination is and will have to eat during the general election debates. The beltway myth, fed by the Obama campaign, is that they 'most fear' facing Romney. Sure they do.

226 Okay, I watched that intro to Perry speech, and there's no room for doubt what Pastor Jefferies said in answers to the press after was simply clarification of something he said in the intro. And given that intro would have been approved by the Perry campaign beforehand ... I really have no problem with this line of attack. If anything, it fits within the theme in the intro, which is a warning that you really do not know what Romney stands for, including who he is, and it's up to Romney to deal with all that. How is that larger theme wrong? Do you want someone who talks like a conservative, when it's convenient (and besides: governed as a liberal the one & only time he's ever run a government), or someone who's walked the walk for three terms?
