Pictures From Perry's Announcement Speech;
Plus, Full Text of Speech

— Ace

Early in the speech.

I forgot the first thing he talked about was the "immeasurable" and "profound" sacrifice of the troops lost in Afghanistan recently. He spoke about them first, rather than as an afterthought, as Obama did. He just asked the audience to "take a moment" to contemplate their "selflessness."

This I think was shortly before that, just as he was saying hello to his family and to Red State.

perryannounce.jpg

This is his family. I think his wife is Ann (or Anita), and his kids are Griffin and Sydney.

perryfamily.jpg

And another one of Perry.

perrydeclares.jpg

Apologies for the bad pictures. Only a few came out, I think because of the crowd -- if someone's ahead of you, the camera focuses on that guy's head, rather than the subject you actually want.

Here's a section of it:

What I learned growing up on the farm was a way of life that was centered on hard work, and on faith and on thrift. Those values have stuck with me my whole life. But it wasnÂ’t until I graduated from Texas A&M University and joined the United States Air Force, flying C-130Â’s all around the globe, that I truly appreciated the blessings of freedom.

To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan, I realized that the United States of America really is the last great hope of mankind. What I saw was systems of government that elevated rulers at the expense of the people. Socialist systems cloaked maybe in good intentions but were delivering misery and stagnation. And I learned that not everyone values life like we do in America, or the rights that are endowed to every human being by a loving God.

You see, as Americans weÂ’re not defined by class, and we will never be told our place. What makes our nation exceptional is that anyone, from any background, can climb the highest of heights. As Americans, we donÂ’t see the role of government as guaranteeing outcomes, but allowing free men and women to flourish based on their own vision, their hard work and their personal responsibility. And as Americans, we realize there is no taxpayer money that wasnÂ’t first earned by the sweat and toil of one of our citizens.

That’s why we reject this President’s unbridled fixation on taking more money out of the wallets and pocketbooks of American families and employers and giving it to a central government. “Spreading the wealth” punishes success while setting America on course to greater dependency on government. Washington’s insatiable desire to spend our children’s inheritance on failed “stimulus” plans and other misguided economic theories have given us record debt and left us with far too many unemployed.

But of course, now weÂ’re told we are in recovery. Yeah.

But this sure doesnÂ’t feel like a recovery to more than nine percent of Americans out there who are unemployed, or the sixteen percent of African Americans and 11 percent of Hispanics in the same position, or the millions more who can only find part-time work, or those who have stopped even looking for a job.

One in six work-eligible Americans cannot find a full-time job. That is not a recovery. That is an economic disaster.

If you think about it, for those Americans who do have full-time jobs, they arenÂ’t experiencing economic recovery with the rising fuel costs and the food prices that are going up. Recovery is a meaningless word if the bank has foreclosed on your home, if you are under water on your mortgage, or if you are up to the max on your credit card debt. Those Americans know that this President and his big-spending, big-government policies have prolonged our national misery, not alleviated it.

And what do we say to our children? YÂ’all figure it out? DonÂ’t worry, WashingtonÂ’s created 17 debt and entitlement commissions in 30 years, but the fact of the matter is they just didnÂ’t have the courage to make the decisions to allow you to have the future that you actually deserve? That Washington wouldnÂ’t even make modest entitlement program reforms in this last debate? And the President even refused to lay out a plan, for fear of the next election? How can the wealthiest nation in the history of civilization fail so miserably to pay its bills? How does that happen?

Well, Mr. President, let us tell you something: you canÂ’t win the future by selling America off to foreign creditors.

We cannot afford four more years of this rudderless leadership. Last week, that leadership failed, and the tax and spend and borrow agenda of this President led to the first ever downgrade of the credit rating of the United States of America.

In reality though, this is just the most recent downgrade. The fact is for nearly three years President Obama has been downgrading American jobs. HeÂ’s been downgrading our standing in the world. HeÂ’s been downgrading our financial stability. HeÂ’s been downgrading our confidence, and downgrading the hope for a better future for our children. ThatÂ’s a fact.

His policies are not only a threat to this economy, so are his appointees – a threat. You see he stacked the National Labor Relations Board with anti-business cronies who want to dictate to a private company, Boeing, where they can build a plant. No president, no president should kill jobs in South Carolina, or any other state for that matter, simply because they choose to go to a right-to-work state.

You see, when the Obama Administration is not stifling economic growth with over-regulation, they are achieving the same through their reckless spending. Debt is not only a threat to our economy, but also to our security.

AmericaÂ’s standing in the world is in peril, not only because of disastrous economic policies, but from the incoherent muddle that they call foreign policy. Our president has insulted our friends and heÂ’s encouraged our enemies, thumbing his nose at traditional allies like Israel. He seeks to dictate new borders for the Middle East and the oldest democracy there, Israel, while he is an abject failure in his constitutional duty to protect our borders in the United States.

His foreign policy seems to be based on alienating our traditional allies, while basing our domestic agenda on importing those failed Western European social values. We donÂ’t need a president who apologizes for America. We need a president who protects and projects those values.

Look, it’s pretty simple: we’re going to stand with those who stand with us, and we will vigorously defend our interests. And those who threaten our interests, harm our citizens – we will simply not be scolding you, we will defeat you.

He did mention God briefly, and "values" learned growing up on a Texas cotton farm, but did not otherwise mention (or even allude to) social issues.

Just stopped by the Kos site, and heads are exploding over there like the loads from a squadron of B29s flying over Tokyo.

They're in full panic/attack (or panic attack, if you like) mode. They're even attacking Perry because of his minister (they sang a different tune re ministers in 2008, no?).

Now, Pecos Bill Rick Perry could ride anything that ever was. So, as some tell the story, there came a storm bigger than any other. It all happened during the worst drought the West had ever seen. It was so dry that horses and cows started to dry up and blow away in the wind. So when Bill Rick saw the windstorm, he got an idea. The huge tornado kicked across the land like a wild bronco. But Bill Rick jumped on it without a thought.

He rode that tornado across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, all the time squeezing the rain out of it to save the land from drought. When the storm was over, Bill Rick fell off the tornado. He landed in California. He left a hole so deep that to this day it is known as Death Valley.

107 Even if you aren't a Perry guy, his strong showing is good for us on this side of Obama.

-A rising Perry divides the lefts dirt digging and character destruction efforts.

-Should help winnow the field making future debates more focused.

-Pulls Romney more conservative while at the same time making him appear farther in the moderate window.

-*more an ambiguous one for me, but a win for the rest of you, attention on Perry distracts from Paul strong showing in the straw poll.

*For me I would like to see Republicans get pulled more in the libertarian direction then to the right but its all still a huge improvement over corporate socialist Obama.

I am not and I repeat I am not a Ron Paul supporter, never have been due to his position on Iran. But as far as economics, Paul ain't off the mark. And we will all be seeing that in the coming months as Italy and the Eurozone has to roll hundreds of billions in debt amidst deteriorating social, political and economic erosion during a point in history where most banks are insolvent.

OH, Ron Paul, you're nuts, you're crazy - yea, ok, he's basically the reason why we just had one of the most serious debates about debt and deficit reduction in years. You think he's nuts just because his foreign policy isn't all about bombing and invading foreign countries - OH MY, he actually wants to bring our troops home rather than spread our imperialistic agenda. Gosh, what a freakin' nutter. I used to read this site religiously, but you guys pretty much just want more of the same - another asshole republican - or democrat - they're basically the same thing at this point. Honestly, if you guys don't see that, we're in big trouble. So yea, let's vote another BushCarterObamaClinton into office - continue our failed foreign policy's and dig ourselves further into debt. You morons are a bunch of morons.

I'm in agreement totally with #294, his speech was awesome, and even though I don't believe all the shit I hear from any politician it was very refreshing to hear something positive and to know that this guy might actually be on my side.

Everytime Obama opens his mouth it's like he's mother f'n me, and I'm tired of his condescending tone and I'm tired of looking up his goddamn nose.

I've been waiting for Perry to announce and can't wait to help his campaign, although I don't think he'll even bother opening an office in my shitty state of Connecticut.

I'm so excited.

276 Sorry for being late here. However, I am excited about Perry. People like ACE and his fellow bloggers can have a target rich environment to ridicule the stupidity of the left now if they are honest about their attacks against Perry. Perry is my man now! For all his flaws, he has a track record that is hard to dispute. So it is time to ridicule the left. They went all in with Obama. And that 's the obvious evidence of their stupidity. So please use your writing power to point out the obvious. Thanks in advance.

277 169 Perry's detractors have nothing. Absolutely nothing. Is he weak on illegal immigration? Posted by: Rand at August 13, 2011 05:44 PM Tom Tancredo says yes, he is: Rick Perry not a true conservative ===== When he first took office as governor in 2001, Perry went to Mexico and bragged about his law that granted "the children of undocumented workers" special in-state tuition at Texas colleges, the first state in the nation to do so. "The message is simple," Perry concluded, "educacion es el futuro, y si se puede." Education is the future, and (echoing Cesar ChavezÂ’s slogan) yes we can.] Just a few weeks ago, Perry defended his decision to give in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. He said "to punish these young Texans for their parentsÂ’ actions is not what America has always been about." =====

278 239 rick perry's position on immigration compared to who - obama? wtf, what is to compare? i don't remember perry inviting the president of mexico to trash arizona's immigration law. Posted by: x11b1p at August 13, 2011 05:59 PM Looks like people need to do more research into Rick Perry if you don't even know about his stance on the Arizona law: ===== Perry opposed Arizona’s tough anti-illegal immigration law SB 1070. "I have concerns," he explained, "with portions of the law passed in Arizona and believe it would not be the right direction for Texas." He spoke out last year against using E-Verify to prevent illegal immigrants from getting jobs as state employees, who get their paychecks from the taxpayers. He insisted it "would not make a hill of beans’ difference." Numbers USA, a group that supports immigration control, gives Perry a “D-“ for his positions supporting amnesty, open borders, and opposing border security. ===== Doesn't sound much different than John Amnesty McCain and Lindsey Grahmnesty. If Obama or Sarah Palin had these positions on illegals, I doubt anyone would be giving them a pass. Interesting how Perry, though, gets a pass.

279 More from the Tancredo article: ===== Perry, in a speech in Mexico in 2007, said he supports completely open borders, calling for the "free flow of individuals between these two countries who want to work and want to be an asset to our country and to Mexico." In the same speech he came out against building a fence along the U.S.-Mexican border. Perry also came out in favor of blanket amnesty for illegal immigrants in 2006, albeit without citizenship, supporting "a guest worker program that takes undocumented workers off the black market and legitimizes their economic contribution." [ ... ] PerryÂ’s only true conservative positions on borders involve calling for an end to sanctuary cities and signing a voter ID law. While I support these measures, they donÂ’t make up for the rest of his positions on immigration. =====

280 @journolist, thanks man, birthday was good. I sensed a portent of trouble ahead way back and almost bought a stack of gold in 2004 @ 275$ ounce. Kicked myself for passing that up. We were broke and moving and weren't sure if we had a job... couldn't rationalize buying gold when food might soon be short. So when silver dipped in 08, I jumped. When oil dropped at the same time to 38$ I wanted to buy a ton but didn't know how. I also was part of an early messenger on the Utah gold thing back then as well. Anyway, glad to bump into another metals appreciator. Metals are the future if you can survive that long.

281 That picture under the lede makes it looks like Governor Perry has a flag-toting eagle-angel sprouting from his head. Now that he's running nationally, expect a couple of legions of crackerjack national media types take a serious run or several at those stories of him in the closet (Hot tip: National Enquirer seems to always have the best sources.). Also: serious in-depth investigative journalism on whether a toup's where there oughta be a bald spot.

And I am a Palin fan, not sure why a Palin fan would be displeased, especially since she is not running.

She's lying in wait to kill Schmidt and company.

It would need to be a conflagration of biblical proportions to avenge the harm they did.

284 239 rick perry's position on immigration compared to who - obama? wtf, what is to compare? i don't remember perry inviting the president of mexico to trash arizona's immigration law. when the current standard is to sell weapons to mexican criminals who use them to kill our citizens while bitching about building a fence or having any type of security - what could perry have possibly done that stinks of that filth regarding immigration?

Exactly. The illegal invasion makes me foaming mouth crazy cause my mother is a resident alien with a green card. She's been here since the late 50's and has to jump through her ass every time the damn thing has to be renewed. She almost got deported back in the early 80's for some financially bullshit, but you can't deport people who overstay their visa's or who violate our federal laws? Fuck that. Like x11blp states above, Perry's record, while not without stupidity on this issue, is far better than the lyin king, who has a la raza bitch on his cabinet receiving millions of taxpayer dollars to preach sedition. They are openly inciting their "homies" to start a race war against "whitey". Just read their "manifesto". They are the latino kkk. Perry's past stupidity with mehico and illegals is nothing in comparison. GO RICK GO!!!

I want my candidate to reflect how I think and one thing that Perry is doing is capturing the youth vote. Did He read the book written by Herbert Hoover's daughter? Wow! Margaret Hoover wrote American Individualism and it spells it out. Exactly what the candidates need to do and Rick Perry is leading the pack. Where is Rudy?

Let's cruise!!! or go to Las Vegas!!!
