A Quick Little Shot of DOOM!
— Monty

DOOOOM
(All hail the mighty Slublog for the graphic.)

While I labor on part 3 of my "basics of economics" series (Savings, Credit, Debt, and Banking), I thought it wise to remind you that DOOM! still lurks close by. You know, in case your mood had improved or you were thinking of being happy today.

President Obama's speech didn't exactly thrill Congressman Paul Ryan, who'd been specifically invited to attend. You might say that Obama's partisan, hectoring, mean-spirited speech pissed him right off, in fact. It's kind of like being invited to a party only to find that the point of the whole party was to insult you.

The WSJ wasn't feeling the love either. Our very own Ace shat on it from a great height yesterday. The Hammer thought it was "a disgrace". So to whatever juiceboxer Obama detailed to write that abomination of a speech, congratulations! You certainly had an impact!

Many rank-and-file Republicans have become rather dispirited at how little "there" is there in the hard-fought Continuing Resolution spending bill that House Speaker Boehner proudly announced early in the week. Mark Steyn captures some of the ennui:

At some point, you have to close a cabinet department just to show youÂ’re serious. Instead, the governing class is sending the message that the political institutions of the United States are so diseased they do not permit meaningful course correction.

To the looming public-sector pension "bomb", the housing "bomb", the Medicare "bomb", the Social Security "bomb", and the real actual Iranian "bomb", we can now add the "tax and debt bomb". We've got so many bombs up in here we oughta open up a bomb store. Complete destruction, now 10% off! Every bomb must go!

This just in from rdbrewer: Jobless claims jump by 27,000 to 412,000. All together now -- unexpectedly!

And yes...California and Illinois are still boned.

[UPDATE 1]: Here's a good policy-level discussion of what Obama's budget alternative really means in fiscal terms. (I can summarize it: much higher taxes, not much in terms of reduced spending. And it doesn't touch entitlement spending at all.)

[UPDATE 2]: A reminder -- Atlas Shrugged opens tomorrow. I've never been a huge fan of the book -- I think The Fountainhead is a far better work -- but I'm going to see the movie. It feels almost like a duty to go see it at this point.

Would you folks recommend a 10mm or a .45 ACP for home defense?

Thanks to Barky, I think I'm going to need it.  I live in a city.

I like the .45 because it was my personal sidearm when I was in the service (9 mm came later).  But I've heard good things about the 10mm too.

I recommend a short barrel shotgun with the plug removed. A 10mm or .45 can act as a backup but the shotgun all around is better for the short distances involved and will not go through the exterior walls of the house after going through the target.

How about the 35 dollar a day meal allowance for Officers for one?

Considering the SES class of civil servant gets expense accounts for lunch maybe there is a lot of belt tightening the government class can engage in before they decide they need to go 'breakfast of champions" on everyone making more than a hundred Gs?

Also add to that, when the collapse comes, as it looks like we will have more and more your best bet is to GTF out of the city as fast as you can.

You need to be at least 100 miles from any city over 500K and 35 miles from any city over 50K.

24 We here at Team DOOM expected all that occured last night.  I, personally, did not expect quite that much.  I mean, I knew we were boned when we got down to $38B from the initial drop-in-the-bucket of $100B, then we heard that it was more like $15B, then $8B, and, like a fool, I fully expected it to stop there.

Like a fool. -_-

26

You know what I was thinking about ammo?

.22 bullets are dirt cheap.  You could conceivably buy 10,000 of them and just put them in a box in the basement.

Modding your rifles to take .22 ammo is not all that hard/expensive.

And a .22 pistol will kill someone just as dead as a 9mm or .40 or .45.

Posted by: Truman North at April 14, 2011 05:08 AM (8ay4x)

27 A shotgun using #6 shot at room distances will go all the way through the target as well, making a "fist sized" hole. It will not go through the exterior wall after that though unless you are using heavier shot.

However, all that being said, for the collapse of civilization/doom scenario those concerns may not be important.

Posted by: Vic at April 14, 2011 05:08 AM (M9Ie6)

28 Yep, short barrelled 12 guage shotgun with extended magazine loaded with #5 birdshot will cut you in half at short range, but is much less likely to pass through a wall and kill your kid. But I keep a .44 S&W special revolver by my bed. If I were to choose an automatic, it would be the .45 ACP, as ammo is quite a bit cheaper for it than a 10 mm, due to age and popularity. Even the Russkies load .45 ACP. It is good ammo and cheap too.

37 And a .22 pistol will kill someone just as dead as a 9mm or .40 or .45. I'm a big fan of the .22LR. I've got a .22LR rifle and a pistol. They're cheap to shoot, accurate to decent range (if you buy good ammo), and good for varminting/hunting small game. My pistol is a Browning Buckmark, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The rifle I'm less fond of -- it's a Remington auto, and it jams a lot. I'm probably going to sell it and get a Savage Mark II or something.

44 I doubt there will be any hordes making it out of the cities.

The "saving grace" of those urban rioters will be the fact that almost none of them have POVs. Initially the only vehicles available to them will be the emergency vehicles that they have commandeered without burning.

The ones that make it to the 'burbs will be somewhat smarter and they will steal cars there. of course, in the cities away from the NE those burbs will be armed so at least half of the  scum will be killed in the local 'burbs before moving to the more distant 'burbs and small towns.

Even with all of that, within the first month the "die off" in urban areas will be in the millions.

Posted by: Vic at April 14, 2011 05:16 AM (M9Ie6)

45 NB: I think the Remington jams *because* it is an auto. The .22LR doesn't have a lot of powder to drive the ejection mechanism. The next .22LR rifle I buy will be a boltgun. (The Buckmark is an auto, though, and it almost never jams, even with crappy ammo.)

Owners of gas-powered cars in Chicago could get some city sticker shock to go along with the pain at the pump if one alderman's plan to increase the cost of the annual stickers is approved.

Ald. Proco "Joe" Moreno, 1st, hopes to raise about $21 million a year under a proposal that also would make the stickers free for drivers of electric cars and cut the cost for those with hybrid vehicles.

"The long-term goal is to give more incentive for people to drive more fuel-efficient cars," said Moreno, who drives a hybrid.

60 For deadliness in a pistol bullet, the bullet most likely to kill in sub magnum pressure ranges is the flat nosed cast wadcutter. I have witnessed the killing power of wadcutters first hand. They cut a clean edged hole through the target and it bleeds to death in seconds. Not as much shock as hollowpoints, but more likely to be fatal.

This post-apocalyptic Mad Max stuff is silly talk. It won't happen.

"DOOM!!!" will look more like Detroit or your typical Latin American country. There will be a large number of peasants on the dole, they will be given subsistence level payments, just enough to keep them from rioting. Crime will be even worse in the cities than it is now. There will be a small number of very wealthy people who will control everything and all government systems will be designed to prevent any competition. It won't be what you know but who you know. There will be widespread favors given and earned along with payoffs and bribes to the necessary government officials; the government officials will take this in cash to supplement their income. Everyone will know that the government officials are corrupt but rarely will anything be done about it because corruption will be the grease that keeps the system's wheels turning. There will be an even smaller middle class that will spend most of its time trying to stay above water but will never be able to become wealthy because the system will be set up to prevent that from even happening. Everyone will cheat like crazy on their taxes. The best and brightest of the middle class will leave the country for better options elsewhere; the only question I have is which country or countries will be the destinations.

The more likely scenario to me is a slow, crushing descent into national poverty which gives time for people to adapt to a new normal. A brain drain requires people to figure out where to go, I have no idea where that is right now. I suppose Canada is an option.

In a perfect world, I might be willing to take for granted all that you say.

But the world is not perfect; you forget that we live in a first-world nation accustomed to luxury, armed to the teeth, with a heavily resentful dependence class, seething with rage, lusting for the opportunity to 'get even' with the 'haves'.  You also have the heavily resentful independent-class, armed, wary, and aware that there are many, many people, especially amongst the leadership of the nation, who have their eye set towards taking what is theirs, and throwing them head-first into a 21st-century USSR.

Then, you have the ever-expanding problem with Islam trying to rape and kill everything that walks the earth, Russia eyeballing taking its satellite nations back, the Middle East set to explode, all of Europe ready to go down the financial drain, and South America and Africa being pits of poverty and repression, as always.  What you have, sir, is World War III, not Mad Max.

Hungry, angry, disenfranchised (real or imagined) people are susceptible to a great many base impulses, and are ripe pickings for manipulation into war, riots, and all manner of political darkness.

One thing you can count on for certain; any solutions proposed for this time period are going to fail. <.< We are way, way too far along the path.  Trust in the Lord, and nothing else, 'cause all this is goin' the way of the dodo.

It's a madhouse waiting to happen.

How I wish that were true.  But I doubt it.  I consider my own situation.  I am enraged daily by the Libtards abuses, by their destruction of our culture and nation.  The government is already illegitimate.  But I have too much to lose to go taking up arms, as do most other middle class conservative types.  As things decay it will only get harder to keep up a decent way of life - who has time to rebel?  And replace the current pukes with what?  The Right is pathetically unorganized.  If we had any kind of real leadership (we don't) we wouldn't be in this mess.  Or else we would certainly already be organizing local cells in every town.  We're not.

Without an organization, a structure, we can't effectively rebel.  Our central government is not some ancient monarchy across the Atlantic - it's a modern super state, right here, watching us.  It's ready to do whatever must be done to preserve itself.

88 I've got the exact same rifle, you must be a better shot than me though, at 50yds I'm only doing dime sized groups. Getting tight groups with .22LR is highly ammo-dependent. (I'm a lousy shot, so even with perfect ammo I rarely get better than quarter-sized groups at 50 yards, but I get lots of flyers with cheap ammo.) I've seen guys put bullets in the same hole at 50 yards with .22LR, though -- heavy varmint barrel and good ammo and a very still day, though.

NB: I think the Remington jams *because* it is an auto. The .22LR doesn't have a lot of powder to drive the ejection mechanism. The next .22LR rifle I buy will be a boltgun. (The Buckmark is an auto, though, and it almost never jams, even with crappy ammo.)

Ruger 10/22, but only with the factory 10 rd magazines. Most examples are extremely reliable with decent ammo, with the bulk-pack Remington Golden Bullet, not so much. Awful, awful ammo.

Plus, there's a shitload of accessories for the 10/22 out there. You can build it as a tackdriver, or as a smaller ultralight trunk gun or anything in between that's appropriate for .22lr.

And for most of us who live in non-free states, you can legally build one from scratch (paperless!) with some basic tooling and an 80% receiver.

Cal State is set to lose $500 million in state funding, and annual tuition will increase by 10% in the fall.

At Cal State Long Beach, several hundred students and faculty gathered in front of the student union, where they joined a gospel choir to sing civil rights songs, including "We Shall Overcome."

Donald Bessom, a political science graduate student, energized the crowd with a message to Cal State administrators and state legislators. "The harder you hit us, the louder we get," Bessom said, as the crowd cheered.

I have about 15k+ rounds of 22 because they will be worth thier weight in gold come barter time. Most of my prepping is for an economic collapse and short term supply chain problems which most if not all infustructure (travel, power, water) are still intact. I'm working to rectify that. Either way everyone should make a list of things that can not do without such as first aid and medication and prepare accordingly. I'm kinda against fuel storage because of the safety concerns unless you plan on bugging out a 500+ miles. If you are rural your best bet is to stay put since you know the area, people and being in your own home can reduce the stress levels.

I don't quite know how I forgot about China in all that... forty million men unable to find a chickie friend by 2030, massively deflated currency at home, propped-up economic scoreboards beneath which is swept the cold stark reality that China's ready for its own kind of collapse in the next twenty years, if not way sooner, and their eternal animosity with Japan, which is also in dire straits, economically, demographically, et cetera.

None of this is good.  All of it is really, really bad.  The DOOM is only a half-joke, a bleak bit of black humor before it all goes batty on us.  As bad as it is made out to be, it's actually quite worse.

We live in dark times, where we may literally watch the play-by-play of how the world descends into war.  In the build-up to World War II, they already had newspapers, but were not afforded the kind of true instantaneous communication and dissemination of news that we have in the Internet era.  It's hard to for us to believe, simply because it's all right there, and we can see all of it.

142 I contend that they'll keep coming - they'll just buy less and less over time.

Late response due to morning walk-about (aka Dr. Detroit)

The Republican budget proposals would insure what you are talking about; a gradual walk-back of the government cheese over time.

But what you are missing is that these proposals are being killed and the Republican leadership is compromising them away. So what will happen is that we will continue along in the same manner as we are now with trillion dollar deficits, printing money to pay for it, and the collapse will hit over a relatively short period of time.

Think Wiemar Republic here.

And for the discussion on the accuracy of the .22 you must keep in mind that the .22 LR has never been a truly accurate cartridge to begin with. The true accuracy .22 contests that I have seen used single shot .22 rifles with a "bull barrel" firing longs or shorts.

The most accurate rifle I ever owned was a 03-A3 Springfield firing hand-loaded 160 gr Speer boat-tail spire points.

145 A post-apocalyptic wasteland would require a sudden catastrophic event, IMO. The more likely scenario to me is a slow, crushing descent into national poverty which gives time for people to adapt to a new normal. A brain drain requires people to figure out where to go, I have no idea where that is right now. I suppose Canada is an option.

SpaceX, Orbital Sciences, Armadillo, Bigelow, Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, and lots of others -- private space exploitation is starting! (And yes, I used exploitation on purpose. I want to go there to make money, dammit, not to look around and plant a flag in the dirt.) I just hope I live long enough to see it come to fruition -- and hope the Donks don't ruin our industrial base to the point that we can't support a privatized space industry any more.

150 On the point of wadcutters vs hollowpoints. One thing to keep in mind, you need to hit the target at a velocity of at least 800 fps to get expansion with the easiest expanding hollowpoints, most require higher velocity to expand significantly. My .44 special is a snubby with a 2 1/2" bbl. To get 850 fps from my snubby (I am shooting gold cup hollowpoints) I had to work up special loads using Power Pistol powder. I was successful in that. My MV is right at 850 fps with 200 grain gold cups. Later, when loading data for that powder/cartridge was published, their max load was EXACTLY what I had worked up for my revolver. Had I not been able to get 800+ from my pistol, the bullets would not expand and would behave as non hollowpoints. In that regard, wadcutters would be superior, as they don't have those velocity requirements to be effective.

I won't say it's impossible.  But I question the time span.  Right now I don't see the government spending doing much to net demand for goods and services, other than propping up what we've already been doing.  We still have lots of empty housing, and lots of underutilized factories.  I would be shocked if it turned out that farmers we not expanding the crop land in use next year, thus expanding food output (assuming the can get loans).

There's a lot of slack capacity.  Until the private sector starts demanding the use of that capacity, I don't see inflation going anywhere.  Deleveraging is still taking place, and banks aren't lending.  Unemployment is sky high, so the labor supply is abundant.  People need those dollars, and that sustains demand for the currency.

The big threat, as I see it, is international demand for resources driving up our input costs, while at the same time we stupidly cut our own throats by refusing to use our own abundant resources.

160 New DNC chief: GOP budget endangers senior citizens' lives

Republicans' budget plan would put seniors' lives at risk, the incoming chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) said Thursday.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Florida congresswoman tapped by President Obama to lead the DNC, said she stood by her characterization of Republicans' 2012 budget as a "death trap" for seniors.

When pressed on whether she intended to say that the GOP budget put seniors' lives at risk, Wasserman Schultz doubled down.

"That's exactly what I'm suggesting," she said during an appearance on CNN.

171 Legal Insurrection:

Update:
  Charles Krauthammer's reaction:

“I thought it was a disgrace,” he said. “I rarely heard a speech by a president so shallow, so hyper-partisan and so intellectually dishonest, outside the last couple of weeks of a presidential election where you are allowed to call your opponent anything short of a traitor. But, we’re a year-and-a-half away from Election Day and it was supposed to be a speech about policy. He didn’t even get to his own alternative until more than halfway through the speech. And when he did, he threw out numbers suspended in mid-air with nothing under them with all kinds of goals and guidelines and triggers that mean nothing. The speech was really about and entirely an attack on the [Rep. Paul] Ryan plan.”

And
Clive Crook (who does not like the Ryan plan) in The Atlantic:

The speech was more notable for its militant--though ineffectual--hostility to Republican proposals than for any fresh thinking of its own. It was a waste of breath.

177 CNS News:

Obama's Increasing Federal Debt $1,148 Per Month Per Household—Enough to Buy a Car or Pay Tuition at State College

The pic to go along with it is so perfect

Overall, according to the U.S. Treasury, the federal debt increased by $3,646,116,554,704.36 between Jan. 20, 2009, when Obama was inaugurated, and April 13, 2011, when he gave a major speech announcing a plan to deal with the debt.

Given that the Census Bureau estimated in March that there are 117,538,000 households in the United States, the $3.6461 trillion increase in the debt under Obama works out to $31,020 per household.

Obama has now been in office 27 months. The $31,020 per household increase in the federal debt under his watch thus equals a per-household increase of $1,148 per month.

That $1,148 per month per household is more than a household would need to finance the monthly payments on a new domestically manufactured automobile

There are a huge amount of data that show this to be incorrect. The FBI did some studies that found that hollow point expanding rounds were the most reliable stoppers.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo (NJConservative) at April 14, 2011 09:57 AM (LH6ir)

You miss the point. I was talking lethality, not energy dump. Hollowpoints dump more energy and shock, but the wadcutters are more lethal. There is a difference.

Posted by: maddogg at April 14, 2011 10:20 AM (OlN4e)

If you're talking about handguns, you're both right and wrong. Excluding exotic ammo (e.g. Glasser safety rounds), hollowpoint expansion is very inconsistent with handgun ammo. About the only hollowpoint handgun ammo that expands fairly consistently is .357 magnum. According to FBI statistics the .357 has the highest rate of first round incapacitation and the highest lethality of LEO handguns.

Wadcutters are virtually pre-expanded bullets, so they perform well if expansion isn't assured.

Of course I'm skipping non-typical LEO handguns like .44 magnums, .38 Super and the .454 Casull.

193 When any machine becomes unstable or performs erratically, there are usually safeguards in place to correct or terminate the operation.

We have activated repeatedly the non-destructive termination routines for our out of control Government. We have input our instructions and changed many effectors but the machine has failed to respond.

When such a situation arises in the world of machines and mechanics, one of the options usually is soft termination of ALL input (energy sources, data) the next to last option is the soft termination of output (disconnection of the machine's ability to effect action) and the final step is the INTERRUPTION OF ALL INPUT AND OUTPUT WITH DISMANTLEMENT BEING EFFECTED WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE.

I believe we have reached that moment.

Unfortunately too many people still have false hopes that it will self correct (the definition of insanity) and will stand in the way of a soft termination of the process' making a more extreme and more violent physical termination necessary.

In 1962, John F. Kennedy famously said, "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."

who here is a macho tubthumper?

I don't suppose you notice I am not blowing up bridges or anything I am running like hell to get away from the likely "NBA title celebratory riots" that will be going on in every major US city the first time the foodstamp cards don't work en mass.....

when I get to my "undisclosed location" hidey hole I plan to work my ass off helping keep vittles going....

YMMV

Yep.  That's why, in terms of national policy at least, it's best to take people at their word when they say they want to kill you.  I'm thinking of the Muz, specifically.  This is especially true when they say it but don't think you'll find out - like when they preach murder in their mosques in Arabic.

Most conservatives are so law-and-order oriented that it takes something pretty extreme to get them to the point of violence.  Unlike the Left.  However, there is a limit.  Pushed too far, even a mouse will fight.

Medieval monarchs gave out land, titles, and sinecures to the nobility and the purpose of this was to maintain loyalty and power. The nobility in turn provided the support and muscle to keep the monarch on the throne. Modern Russia is no different; Putin is for all intents and purposes the czar, while the new capitalists/industrialists are the aristocratic gentry. He gives them enough to keep them happy but also keeps the threat of the whip at hand. They in turn will support him as long as they are wealthy/fearful. He derives his power from them, but they have enough money that they could band together to overthrow him if he adopted policies that were destructive to their wealth or status.

233 Boehner on Ingraham just now:

"$315 billion in cuts over 10 years versus $0 cuts with Obama."
"Largest non-defense spending cut in history"
Said it was the best he could get and it was a 1st step.  The real cuts come tomorrow with the 2nd step w/ Ryan's plan to cut trillions w/ entitlement reforms.

Said he was "very disappointed with president's speech (yesterday)."  "If he won't lead, we will."

Ingraham said she had dinner last night will one of his colleagues.  They admitted the R's were afraid vs. showing a position of strength.  Boehner's response was "look where we are today.  The debate has changed.  We have a plan."  He said he met w/ Obama yesterday and thought he understood...then went out there w/ that terrible partisan speech.

He continued, "I want more spending cuts.  Nobody worked harder to get spending cuts on the table than I did.  Best deal we could get.  Now we're moving on to save trillions."

Laura asked about debt ceiling.  He said without raising it, we'll have "true economic meltdown."  But he alluded to not proceeding with it unless there were real reforms that went along with it.

As for the CR, I think it will pass. The conservatives within the conference are split because Obama is now talking about next year and some think 2012 is the hill on which to die. As a related note of interest, an article in Politico this morning made it sound like Rep. Jim Jordan and the rest of RSC will be upping pressure on Boehner after this.

The share of the population that is working fell to its lowest level last year since women started entering the workforce in large numbers three decades ago, a USA TODAY analysis finds.

Only 45.4% of Americans had jobs in 2010, the lowest rate since 1983 and down from a peak of 49.3% in 2000. Last year, just 66.8% of men had jobs, the lowest on record.

The bad economy, an aging population and a plateau in women working are contributing to changes that pose serious challenges for financing the nationÂ’s social programs.

That is the rankest kind of sophomoric bullshit, and it gets pitched by both R's and D's whenever the topic comes up. "We don't want to curtail our spending!" they wail. "We'd have to spend our precious dollars on debt-service if you don't increase the limit on our credit card!" Fuck them sideways with a rusty pitchfork. If the bondholders are going to get shafted, better to do it now and get it over with. There will be no spending discipline in DC until it is forced on them, and the best way to do that is to deny them a raise of the debt ceiling. Cut up the credit card and throw it out.

Keep in mind that we have always known that the Senate and the Bamonite would not go along with ANY budget cuts. That is why the strategy was to split the budget bill by department and give it to them in a take it or leave it basis.

i.e. Take this amount or nothing.

However, even though Boner ran on this platform it appears that he has abandoned it now. This 2012 budget and the debt ceiling ARE, in fact, the hill do dies on now.

YouTube Comedian Gets Two Months In Prison After Appearing To Sing Dirty Sex Song To Kids

“The footage of the children was recorded in January when Emory performed a clean song for the class. It was only later that Emory returned to the empty classroom to record a vulgar song, which he edited with clips of the children and posted to YouTube in mid-February.

On Tuesday, Judge William C. Marietti of the Muskegon County 14th Circuit Court sentenced Emory under a previously arranged plea deal to 60 days in jail, two years probation, 200 hours of community service, mandatory counseling and fines and costs. And when he emerges from jail, Emory can’t be within 500 feet of children under the age of 17. All for a comedy attempt gone awry.”

Raising the debt ceiling is a lot like the heroin addict 'needing' just one more shot before actually trying to quit.  The IMF attempted an intervention but Obama insists we have Tiger Blood.

I'm firmly in Camp Doom these days.  The interesting questions involve how our government is going to try to obfuscate and bully its way around the natural autostop features of spiraling government debt.  They already lie about inflation and have the banks loaning all their money to the US Government while claiming the banks aren't loaning period.

I don't know about this budget deal bill but Rogers has not yet touched the 2012 budget. He has specific amounts which are going to be voted-on tomorrow, and if those pass he will then have to appropriate at those levels. Whether he breaks it into 12 separate bills is an unknown.

283 Darn Boehner, don't go saying we MUST raise the debt ceiling. I think we do but we need the R's to be saying over and over that raising the debt ceiling without a serious cut to the budget is the road to ruin. If the GOP house leadership is not ready for that fight right now than raise the ceiling by .1 trillion and get ready. I think they should redo Obamacare repeal attached to the debt ceiling increase. Attach debt ceiling increase to Ryan's budget. get something substantial in return, they seem to think they can get more campaign contributions and votes for 2012 by playing the "we cant do anything with only the house" card. It seems to me like that will backfire badly if they don't at least make serious attempts to stop the runaway train of government spending as conservatives will go "why bother, may as well let the Dems/Marxists crash the system faster"

Posted by: palerider at April 14, 2011 08:07 AM (vL0Nv)

284 Someone yesterday said BO would give a speech today or tomorrow about how Dems and Repugs need to 'come together'.  They were spot on:

Obama: Parties must 'come together' to solve debt problem

"At some point, we're going to have to come together as Americans," Obama said before meeting with the co-chairmen of the fiscal commission he appointed last year, Democrat Erskine Bowles and Republican Alan Simpson.

"As they pointed out in their bipartisan effort, it is important to put everything on the table," Obama said.

Obama did not adopt the fiscal commission's recommendations, but said its work "helped shape my thinking on these issues."

At the White House today, Obama echoed some of the themes of his speech. He said debt reduction should not sacrifice essential programs like education and energy, and that wealthier Americans should bear a higher percentage of the tax burden.

"We've got to look at everything, including our security spending, in order to achieve the goals that we need," Obama said.

285 261 Laura asked about debt ceiling. He said without raising it, we'll have "true economic meltdown."

That is the rankest kind of sophomoric bullshit, and it gets pitched by both R's and D's whenever the topic comes up. "We don't want to curtail our spending!" they wail. "We'd have to spend our precious dollars on debt-service if you don't increase the limit on our credit card!"
_________

Here's what I don't understand: what does the debt limit mean? What happens if it's violated? How is it enforced?

I have a sneaking suspicion that Congress enforces it and they can simply choose not to.

286 DeMint: If vote to raise debt ceiling is GOP's Waterloo, 'let it be'

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) said on the conservative Laura Ingraham Show he is considering filibustering an upcoming vote to raise the nation's $14.3 trillion debt limit, if it doesn't contain other fiscal reforms.

Asked if that would serve as the GOP's "Waterloo" in the 2012 elections, the senator replied, "If it is, then let it be."

Posted by: momma at April 14, 2011 08:09 AM (penCf)

287 Since except for voting there is not much I can do about the specifics of what economic plan they are going to implement so I don't stress over it. I just try to plan accordingly which means for me I just have to worry about inflation. Shit now I've just stressed myself.

I disagree with his assessment of Boehner as a leader but what I'm reading from CBO this morning meshes with what Foster is saying about the deal. The key thing is that Rogers failed to reduce the deficit by a larger amount this year, but that doesn't change the reductions in spending authority.

She didn't, but I am surprised.  She rarely lets anything slip by her.  And I agree.  Who has ever seen Olyingbastard do anything remotely to suggest he is willing to 1) work w/ Republicans or better yet, 2) take the debt and deficit serious in any form or fashion?  There are no indications he has ever done it.  Why The Weeper from Ohio would think he "got it" now is beyond me.

297 Here's what I don't understand: what does the debt limit mean? What happens if it's violated? How is it enforced?

I don't know how it is enforced, my guess is they will just ignore it.  If for some reason they actually do enforce, its not totally as bad as it seems, all maturing debt can just be rolled over, its not new since it is already counted, what the interest is may be a different matter.  If enforced it just means no new debt and they can only spend what comes in.

Nevertheless, we all know they will increase it, and it appears we will get nothing for it based on the negotiation skills I have seen.

The only thing I know about the debt ceiling is that the same people who are screaming, "OMG economic collapse if we don't raise it!!1" were screaming the same thing before the 1st vote on TARP. I've gotten to the point that I automatically reject anyone in government who preaches instantaneous economic armageddon if we don't pass the current bill without even examining it.

Heck, Pat Toomey outlined a plan several months ago that would maintain the debt ceiling without defaulting on the debt.

I am god on my land. I told them to get lost, and they seemed to take it badly. They upped the level of tension, so I took it to the limit. LOL!  I haven't had so much fun reading a thread here in a long time.  Looks like my husband got a few people a bit hot while I was away (and yes, he did it on purpose...just to see what would happen; looks like it worked).

For the record: Phoenixgirl, my husband has as much right to this keyboard as I do, or anybody else in my house.

Lemmiwinks, no, I'm not 50 yet, or a guy (last I checked) or bald (that would be a bummer)...but I've never said I was anything more than what I am (which is a long way from 20) and I have never hinted that I wanted to do sex with anyone here (I'm a married woman).

And yes, my husband has been shot at -- and a good thing all the folks weren't expert riflemen; of course, not many Iraqis, Somalis, etc. usually are. (which I'm thankful for).

Plus, my husband does have a point about all the talk: folks, you are scare talking yourselves into a tizzy with things that are not here yet (and nobody knows the future).  It isn't helping you, and yeah, I can see where it's doing the opposite.  Is there rioting and murder in the streets? Are you and your children swelling up and dying from hunger right now? Are union thugs dragging you from your homes and assaulting you ? No, so try to calm down and think of ways you can alleviate that IF it should happen. (I mentioned this in the thread below, and I'll add: there are people in this world who do have to greet this everyday; you aren't even close to being in their shoes, so count what you have going for you instead of what you don't have anymore or what you think you might not have in the future -- leaven your "Doom!" a little...for your sakes and everyone else's). **And yeah, unless you mean to take up arms yourselves and get out there and do it, don't talk like that -- you're doing exactly what Nancy and Co. want you to do when engaging in that sort of thing.

Just an observation.
