— Ace In which The Comely Coed insists that sure, Weiner sent her that pic, but she didn't do anything to encourage that.
This is less of a "I believe you" than a "I'm not sure it matters at this point so, whatever."
She goes on to explain that most infamous of "Ethel's" tweets -- the one about honey-mustard -- was most likely a case of a friend, or boyfriend, typing up an embarrassing message on to her left-open Twitter.
Ethel did immediately say "Hacked... obviously." And reading this so-dirty-it's-ludicrous tweet, yes, I have to say in retrospect, this does not read like a girl being dirty. It reads like a guy being funny.
That over-the-top sexual thing? That's a guy thing. We do that 200 times a day here.
Plus, it was public.
It should also be noted that it wasn't like "Ethel" typically said such things on Twitter. Nope, that was out of character. That jumps out in the tweet history.
As an added bonus, it would explain a lot. The first part of that tweet praises someone I take to be her friend and/or boyfriend, the guy I am guessing actually wrote it. But the second part mentions "weiner" -- my thinking is this is razzing her about her crush, even as he sockpuppets her into praising himself.
So based on this, I have been on Team Pranked Tweet as regards this particular item since yesterday.
However, as regards Weiner's state of mind...? Weiner would not have known the backstory here, and might have said, "Hey, this girl's got potential."
By the Way: I realize many of you are going to say "That's not true."
I'm going to have to ask you not to do that. I know you disagree. I get that. Consider it judicially noted that there are many objections to this post.
But this is not just an argument, you know. There are issues here beyond who's right and who's wrong.
This'll Put The Kibbosh On Such Outrageous Slanders: As I wrote in a comment, and now have asked The Comely Coed:
The odd thing here is that if Weiner and The Comely Coed are being truthful, than what is admitted is worse than what is merely suspected: That the claim is that he sent, unsolicited and unwarned, a picture of his erection to a 21 year old college student who was, we are informed, merely talking about being harassed by PatriotUSA76.Ironically, the claim is this: The Comely Coed was talking with Weiner about how PatriotUSA76 was accusing Weiner of talking dirty with underage girls, which then provokes him, it seems, to send an underage (or near-underage) girl a picture of his erection.
Was his intent... deep, black-humor irony?
I don't get the joke. "That's such an outrageous claim, I shall parodize it by... sending a 21 year old an unsolicited picture of my erection! And let this sarcastic missive stand as my response to such risible claims!"
Or, as a commenter puts it:
Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: Here's a picture of my penis.
I Asked... The Comely Coed two questions. In response to Worthington, she alleged:
He wasnÂ’t inappropriate with me, though. Our talks were about people like Wolfe. I was intrigued by them. I still am. IÂ’ve watched closely. IÂ’m considering writing a piece on it.
So, my first question was a variation of:
Am I to understand, per the interview with Aaron Worthington of Patterico.com, that you were only DMing with him about these scurrilous allegations made by the #bornfree crew that he was behaving inappropriately with underage girls, and, in response to this complaint of this absurd charge, he sent a picture of his erection to you, thereby confirming the charge?
Or was it some attempt at deepest irony?
OUT: Anthony Weiner is an out-of-control cybersexer
IN: Anthony Weiner is an out-of-control ironist
Her answer was:
Why would I tell you what my speculation is? You want to know his intent? Ask him.
A commenter, May Bee I think, points out she is more eager to offer an explanation for Ethel's tweets, one that helps Ethel. I actually believe that explanation, but do note the disparate treatment. I take from that she has no speculation that could help Weiner and so chooses to clam up. On this one.
Which leads to my next question. I asked a variation of:
Since you are now alleging, and agreeing with Weiner, that he sent an unsolicited, unwarned, uninvited picture of his erection to a 21 year old girl -- a nonconsensual sex act, like flashing -- which is prosecutable (see Alvin Greene's prosecution for the obscenity of showing a coed a dic pic on the Internet), will you now join me in calling for Anthony Weiner to resign?
She did something like what she did at Patterico's place -- she stomped off and didn't answer.
Can I just say, Id rather get 20 unsolicited "lewd" pics than the THOUSANDS of harassing tweets Ive received from the obsessed extremists!
BTW, I said this on Twitter too: Please don't harass her when she's actually answering questions with an interviewer. What do you hope to accomplish? To the extent we get anywhere it is from her answers. What is the point of 1000 people shouting at her?
Well, the point is she gets to do what she did here, which is disappear from the interview, using harassment as a reason.
And I actually was sort of getting somewhere.
Anger is not useful. Repetitions of the same allegations are not useful.
I was actually asking provocative questions and now she's gone.
Please don't do this. All the anger in the world isn't going to solve anything.
I hate to pull rank here but some people really do not know what the F*** they're doing and seem to think that just shouting and jumping up and down is somehow aiding the cause.

If she was hacked, Weiner ruined her defense by crying wolf, and that ruins her name (her real name is out there).
If she wasn't, she was troubled. And either way, Weiner made it work with the private messages and his obvious pattern.
It's just sad that Weiner saw what he did. IT's interesting that Cordova promises she has secret info that clears Ethel's name, but refuses to tell us what it is. I believe she is trying to angle this story for her professional benefit, and probably also a paid story with TMZ or Gawker or wherever. She wants to use this to her advantage, but is willing to leave Ethel without this proof Cordova has? That's really sick.
Anyway, I didn't find Cordova to be trustworthy, but a good liar uses truth sometimes, and that very well could be what this is about. I think Ace has extremely solid instincts with this case, and so I'm seeing his version of this as pretty plausible.

The one thing that makes Coed (sorry, I called her by her name earlier... is that off limits?) believable to me is that she's paranoid about what a victim she is. She leaps to claiming she's being harassed or stalked when she actually isn't. She likes to move right to the edge of danger and then pull back crying she's a victim.
And in her mind, she's being 100% honest despite how it comes across, as someone playing the victim card cynically.
I don't mean this in a racist manner, but I've met a few young intelligent black women in college who were both inquisitive and apprehensive about being challenged, often seeing an element of unfairness that wasn't really there. I think Coed could easily be such a person. So she's sure Dan Wolfe is harassing her, and brings that to Weiner's attention, even though she probably could have been a little more reasonable about this and seen his pattern of behavior (looked over all his followed ladies and they talk about him, for example).
And then Weiner sends her his penis shot, and she sees nothing implicating Weiner, but rather a paranoid prank? That's rather hard to believe, but hey.
Posted by: Dustin at June 12, 2011 09:00 AM (Q3nWV)
I think ace has it exactly right, the tweet just seemed too nonsensical to be valid, virtually no other tweet she made was explicit like that. Since she tweets from her Blackberry, it's really easy for a friend of hers to grab her phone and tweet something that made it seem like it came from her, as a retarded joke.
Which makes me wonder, is that where Weiner got the idea for his weak as shit excuses? He could have been reading her tweets and gotten the idea of saying it was a hack/prank from there. The terminology is too eerily similar.
Regardless, I wish people would fucking stop saying hacked where no actual hacking occurred. If someone grabs your phone and tweets from it using your account, you haven't been hacked, capice?

They will spend most of the news cycle pretending the previous two years did not exist. It includes a carrot -- a job offer a la the ones Vernon Jordan dug up for Monica Lewinsky -- and a stick: a threat that they will groom a challenger and fund him/her (better a "her" -- victim points) to the eyeballs and no one will campaign with him.
His problem is money. He has no job skills outside telling other people how to live their lives. The job offer will get him out.

Too bad Worthing didn't point this out.
Posted by: arhooley at June 12, 2011 01:23 PM (q0Oku)"
To some extent, he got to this with:
"Worthing:
Let me ask you this. Looking back in 20/20 hindsight, do you think he was trying to get you into a relationship like he did with Weiss? Like was there anything that sounded innocent at the time, but took on new meaning now all this happened?"
I realize that's not specific or pointed enough. The whole interview I'm waiting for him to get more aggressive. But she would have bailed. No one else is getting an interview with her, so Aaron probably assumes folks like you can put 2 and 2 together and just ask her very generally about how it looks like he was either hitting on her, or his picture makes absolutely no sense.
Anyway, he also doesn't seem to care much about her opinion of Weiner's mindset, which is clever enough I guess, because she's not the authority on that or really much of anything else, and her claims to know many things for sure have been very faulty/dishonest.

Isn't this pretty annoying? She claims this was a harasser, but she's actually doing a lot of the harassment (or something much milder than harassment, but certainly no worse than Dan Wolfe was doing). Here are some people worried about Weiner's disturbing behavior, and Coed is laughing at them and mocking them, following them to send a direct message, and then unfollowing and blocking to prevent a more public reply. It's aggressively douchey behavior on her part.
Though that could just be because she's a huge fan of Weiner and so paranoid about conservatives that she can't think straight.
I mean, she liked Weiner's outbursts and that made her join the fanclub, so she's obviously into that sort of stuff.

I wouldn't take that bet no matter what odds you were giving.
What I believe will happen is that Weiner will be expelled next week. Dems are clearly at the end of their rope with him and he had left them no choice. Polite request that he depart have failed. Outright condemnation has failed. There's nothing left for them but to throw him out. I think that's why he left for "treatment". He knows they're going to expel him and he wants to be out of communication when they do.
The saddest thing is, I think the voters of New York will re-elect him even if he IS expelled.

Honestly, this is the best you'll get out of her on a Twitter interview. She has too much time to think about (or get advice on) an answer. Don't think that with every question you ask, she gets about a dozen unsolicited pieces of advice on how to respond. Some of them might be "official".
If you want people to answer questions, you have to get their guard down. Start asking her why she majored in journalism. Get her emotions running up and down about things that she doesn't have to lie about. You could get her angry by accusing her of choosing an easy major. You'll get responses about how noble the journalism profession is. You can build on that and trap her. Moreover, you can point out how difficult her prospects are, given that "news" isn't a well-paying profession anymore.
You've got to break her down and that means that you have to go off-topic.

That makes more sense... because I am pretty sure you will NEVER get her to call on Weiner to resign. But you can certainly get her to the point where she has to say, "Well, okay, he did what that Alvin Greene guy did." And then hope the NY Times guy reports that.

After reading through all the comments, I didn't see anyone else mention it (average joe maybe since he's in the area), but CNN was interviewing protesters on their latest broadcast. It came on about 2:30 PM or so.
This is a nice escalation to keep the story going. Weiner played the 'rehab' card and right now people are coming out and protesting. Further protests might keep this story near the top of the news. As it is, CNN is trying to focus on the Republican Debate especially today, since yesterday was Weiner much of the day.
The protesters pushed Weiner back through CNN's coverage of the Republican Debate (which CNN is heavily invested in), the newest Gabby Giffords photos (which made Canadian news here) and the killing of the Al Quada leader (which you know the administration would have LOVED to be talking about but Weiner is still taking up a lot of news time.)

Actually there is something to be said for a nice (and thorough) round of jeering when one shits in the bed. If one cannot get past ribbing on a page one chooses to visit and repeatedly refresh, perhaps a place where interaction with other posters is strictly limited would be more to one's taste. Lucianne.com, i.e. a salon rather than a saloon, is the place for those with such tender sensibilities.

BTW, I said this on Twitter too: Please don't harass her when she's actually answering questions with an interviewer. What do you hope to accomplish? To the extent we get anywhere it is from her answers. What is the point of 1000 people shouting at her?Well, the point is she gets to do what she did here, which is disappear from the interview, using harassment as a reason.
Ok, I get that this is your place and you get to set the rules, tone, etc in your comment section. You have the rank.Maybe I don't understand the deal with Twitter, but just wtf is your rank there? You are trying to do what you are trying to do, but other people are trying to do what they are trying to do. You aren't paying for their bandwidth on Twitter, so what makes you think you have any rank at all over them?

How about, no one includes underwear in a dic pic to a porn star?
Dic pic with underwear is somewhere around step two of what we now know the Underpants Gnomes were doing:
Step 1: flirtatious chat with innuendoes and double entendres.
Step 2: dic pic with underwear
Step 3: CYBERSEX!
Whether step 1 leads to step 2 and step2 to step 3 depends on what the person on the other end of the conversation does.
Posted by: stuiec at June 12, 2011 11:25 AM (HMdeP)
Reasonable questions on the Ginger/G******* mistake, especially about the @ instead of d.
But remember the theory that a salacious 140+ character message was bifurcated and the first part of the message was properly DMd while the second half -- the dicpic URL -- went to the public twitter feed? That would leave one mistake for Weiner (G/G) and one stupid feature for Twitter.

If it turns out they haven't seen the deleted tweets and just took Mom and Dad's word that nothing bad happened, would raise suspicions that the police, if not actually covering anything up, were just interested in having this go away so as not to run afoul of a sitting Congressman?

Superman reference. A reference to "tights" doesn't make for a
slam-dunk case on salaciousness, especially when coupled to "cape".

No one ever managed to download (right-click, save as) the actual yfrog pic -- it was just a screenshot of the pic that patriotusa76 got -- so all that data is unknown.

By your monitor's light
What so proudly I sent
At the twilight's last tweeting,
Whose proud shaft and blue vein
While we chatted last night
From my breeches I pulled
As a quick online greeting?
And the red-tipp'd stiff reed,
The balls bursting with seed,
Gave proof through the Web
Of my powerful need
Oh, say, does that wide-Twitter'd Weiner yet wave
O'er the Internet free and the blogs of the brave?

This brings to mind an interview with some government official not to very long ago. I don't remember who the official was, but Chicago sticks in my mind, so maybe he was from there. Anyway, the regular group of "journalists" was asking him the standard softball questions designed to let him run his talking points. But, there was one guy who was not playing ball. He was asking the uncomfortable questions and would then stick with it on the followup when the official would try to dodge it. What was really telling was the response of the rest of the journalpack. They were trying to block him, both physically (placing their bodies between him and the official) and verbally, interrupting to ask some other question to give the official an excuse to to answer them instead of the guy who would not play ball. The official ended up terminating the Q&A session, using the excuse that the guy was harassing him. The journalpack blamed the one guy asking real questions, asking him "Are you happy now?"
Obviously, you will not see the two situations as analogous, and you may very well be right. Without the so-called harassment, she might have continued to answer your questions. Or, she may have not answered that question in any event; she just used the excuse at hand as a reason not to. Without that excuse, she could have just come up with another.
Either way, you are not entitled to demand that others cooperate with your strategy. I can imagine that you were probably a bit frustrated, thinking she was opening up, and then have her close down right when you thought you were getting somewhere. However, I would suggest that if you do want others to cooperate with you, asking would be a better tactic than demanding.

I did a ludicrously quick survey of some people I know with teenagers, and discovered that if your kid expresses serious interest in politics, and follows a politician, the politician (or his/her staff?) follows the teen back. Evidently, this is how politicians recruit pages, interns, people to stuff envelopes during reelection and so on.
So, maybe she's actually interested in politics?
I also asked my friends if their kids ever receive private messages from the pols they follow, and got a short answer: They better not!

You know, that's not a bad idea. You could make some money from this. Actually form an Executive Committee and sell memberships. You can have monthly hour-long conference calls where paid-up members can tell you what you're doing wrong, bitch at you, and vote on what you should do differently. This could be a goldmine.

They all really should be. Yeah sure this "new media" is a great way for the Congress members to interact with their consituents but really I don't want mine to be handling 140 character messages all the time. You know what is another awesome way to interact with constituents? The Phone. But I doubt they're the ones answering that all day.
Its not as if they need someone just to handle twitter full time anyways. Hell you could probably get a "New Media" staffer for them where they handle Twitter, Facebook, and maybe even some blog interactions too. And you probably still wouldn't even need that as their fulltime job and it would still allow you to claim to be a well connected congressman in this digital age.

Maybe. But the behavior patterns demonstrate issues beyond just being a conservative surrounded by liberals. Like the things the come up about Israel and talking about how "we" don't really understand it when she means she doesn't, and yet still spouts off without going out to learn.
The case of asking questions yet admitting that she doesn't stick around to learn the answers. "I still don't know what a moby is" Always being a victim, and also regularly twisting what was said a previous day or flat out lying about it like one day posting something with an air of seriousness and then the next day claiming that it was only talking about that in a joking manner.
Or claiming she was being attacked for one reason, like being from New York rather than the actual reason, which was closer to New York has the supreme moral authority on this matter. Or you know calling someone a selfish bitch, having the post pasted in a thread the next day and almost directly below it claiming they never called anyone a selfish bitch.
Yeah if it was a one time thing, there's a lot of leeway, but its just this repeated pattern of behavior that comes off as odd an unwilling to learn. Troll probably isn't the best word. But is there really a short word for willfully ignorant liar incapable of critically thinking or learning?
Posted by: buzzion at June 12, 2011 12:47 PM (oVQFe)
Imagine being pregnant and taking a simple blood test that lays bare the DNA of your fetus. And suppose that DNA could reveal not only medical conditions like Down syndrome, but also things like eye color and height. And the risk for developing depression or Alzheimer's disease. And the chances of being gay.
So far that's still science fiction. But scientists have been taking some baby steps in that direction. And some ethics experts say it's time to start talking now about what that could mean for parents and society.
This is the second story in a two-part series on fetal DNA testing and the ethical issues raised by it.

Whose proud shaft and blue vein
While we chatted last night
From my breeches I pulled

Gave proof through the Web

Oh, say, does that wide-Twitter'd Weiner yet wave

It's not actually 10% 1st error * 10% 2nd error = 1% double error statistics math in cases like this. If your already flailing for whatever reason, (thumbing touch screen while generating stimulus packages, lost in the UI, rushed), your likelihood of further error goes way up. Yeah but then as he pointed out later, there's that 5:45 Seattle time Tweet hanging out there too. And the similarity between the comely co-ed's and the strippers statements which are very similar.
I mean I was on board originally with the idea that he was actually DMing the stripper based on her tweets of that night. But the timeframe for some things don't add up to make it a lock. Like she's still talking about her love for him after midnight of that night, and there is a post up on her blog in just a skirt and using her hand to cover her tits. If those had gone up before his dicpic went out then we could be playing connect the dots timeline with speculation.
And I think a stripper/porn star might be a little bit more palatable to go after than a young girl in college. But it really does appear to be that yep he sent his dicpic to the college girl.

Well, speaking for no one else, I thought the distinction re: the ban was clear enough. I just saw a lot of people who wanted to play on the other side of that line.

The "no one" who knew it wasn't a hack was presumably Huma, whom he had told just that morning. She -- very hard to type this -- she believed him until he came clean to her. Thank goodness, #TheKeyboardIsVeryLoyal and isn't bursting into flames at that.
I know I read somewhere that he was in crisis management with "his people" on Friday night, crafting the anti-Breitbart decoy plot. Not sure when he started begging Ginger Lee to lie.

Either this scandal has ruined the English language, or our language/culture has always been one big minefield of dick jokes and we are just now discovering it.
Posted by: arhooley at June 12, 2011 06:33 PM (q0Oku)
Minefield of dick jokes definitely. And with a hair trigger to go off too.
Oh shit! *BOOM*

Wow. Just wow. Remind me never to give you a compliment again.

What, we're not allowed to kid people about spelling errors anymore?
When "vouch" comes out as "vouche," that's funny right there. And can't we then explore that thought a bit further by asking if there's such a thing as "vouchebags"?
It's all meant to be in good fun.

"What does a "vouchebag" look like?"
I don't know, but if they exist I bet there's one on "Jersey Shore".

Hair triggers are especially dangerous when the gun is cocked and loaded. Oh, wait....

yeesh. I thought he was joking when he said he could vouch (vouche) for it, as if he had something more than pix. So what's wrong with a little humorous insinuating right back at him?

We used to joke about radio station KUNT - the reception was always kind of hairy.
On the other hand, back in the 1970s, there was actually KOME-FM in San Jose. It got away with station promos that declared it was "the KOME spot on your dial" and "you've got KOME all over your dial".

Anyway, that doll site is hilarious. The KSM doll, the Baby Drop doll, dead Uday Hussein. Links don't work, though.

Such a cheerful little tweet from the most terrified man on the planet.
So true.
And that scolding ABC interview. What was going through his mind when he was flashing out all that righteous anger?

Thing that gets me the most about Weiner now-
Hubris.
Friggin' Hubris.
He has become a major distraction, he has tarnished, probably irrevocably, his rising star, he will be dogged from here on out with questions and innuendo....
...But he doesn't quit. The Dems are right to call on him to resign. His district would be better served by a representative who isn't being questioned about DM'ing 16 year olds at every turn. But Representative Weiner apparently doesn't think there is anyone else capable enough of serving the district other than him.
Bullshit. Frankly, for the D's, this is a no brainer- the fact it took them so long to call for him to resign speaks loads- this is a safe seat. They could run the mortal remains of a serial killer and the constituents would say "sure, that was bad and all, but I think his views on Health Care are good".
The Hubris is amazing. A democratic district with a strong liberal tradition, yet he doesn't feel there exists anyone else who can serve his constituents better than him.
You blew it congressman, do the right thing and resign.
It is a Congressional seat, not an entitlement.

“Ace theorizes that the infamous Ethel DM about “honey mustard” was actually sent by her boyfriend. It’s possible, although nobody has gone on record making that claim.”
Could be another first for Ace.
