— DrewM What in the world are the GOP candidates thinking letting MSNBC and The Democratic Daily Newsletter (aka Politico) host these things? This was nothing more than an effort to get as many soundbites of Republicans knocking each other as possible.
You know who won the night? Our very own Ben who noted during the live blog a mysterious absence of certain topics.
notice the debate moderators are staying away from every issue Obama is failing at, the economy, jobs, and spending
It was nothing more than an exercise in ignoring Obama and minimizing any benefit a candidate might be gaining. If Perry or Romney started to score too many points it seemed like inevitably the next question went to Ron Paul or Jon Huntsman who could be counted on to be buffoonish and attack traditional conservative stances.
As Ben Domenech summed it up nicely it in his excellent daily email blast "The Transom" (which you can subscribe to here).
I wonder if Brian Williams and John F. Harris honestly believe the debate was between them, ordained as neutral arbiters, and the Republican field – not between the candidates on the stage. Williams’ repeated needling of Ron Paul was a particularly absurd rabbit hole, but it was Harris who wasted the most time, chasing after Perry on scooplet after irrelevant scooplet, hoping desperately for some kind of gaffe. There were more questions asked about an old never-implemented HPV policy than about job creation – zero questions, by my count, were actually asked on that score. Here’s the point: debates within Republican primaries ought to be about informing Republican voters what candidates believe, and why. Instead, we get all the insight of the New York Yankees sitting for a press conference with a bunch of die-hard Red Sox fans. (“The next question is for Mr. Jeter from Twitter user @MickeyfromNatick…”) A Republican voter would come away from that debate with no clear perspective on what the frontrunners plan for Iraq and Afghanistan, Defense spending or the Eurozone collapse. On the central fiscal issue dividing conservative and moderate Republicans – the conflict between the push for austerity and pro-growth tax cuts – there were no questions asked at all. There was nothing of note asked regarding President Obama’s speech today, perhaps an indication that not even Harris or Williams can pretend it matters.
And bringing in the guy from Telemundo to ask the immigration questions? Boy that was subtle, hey let's try see if they have the guts to be racist to the Hispanic guy's face!
It was also appalling racism on the part of two liberal news organizations.
If the guy from Telemundo is enough of a journalist to be included at all, why not include him on the panel and let him ask anything he wants? Are NBC and Politico saying Hispanic journalists need to stay in the immigration ghetto and let the big (white) boys handle the hard stuff? Seems like it. Just imagine if Fox News had pulled that kind of stunt. The howls of outrage coming from Media Matters for America and every other liberal nitwit would be non-stop (and well earned). But MSNBC? Silence.
And don't even get me started on the post debate panel featuring every liberal they could find including noted race baiter Al Sharpton. Spin we much!
I had issues with the South Carolina forum held on Monday but if you really want to get at information useful to Republican voters and get a sense of a candidates ability to think and engage on issues, then you need to go more in that direction. Candidates come out one at a time and have to talk and think. I kind of liked letting Jim DeMint and Robert George ask the questions. Steve King was useless but no more so than Brian Williams.
Take the basic format and tweak it a bit. Build a panel which includes a sitting or recently retired Republican politician (someone in Congress or a Governor), a conservative academic and a conservative opinion journalist that question and engage the candidates one at a time. It would be a far more informative way to spend our time than the soundbite factory stuff we saw last night. I'm far more interested in the ideas these people have, their experience and their plans to get their agenda enacted than I am their ability to produce or not produce talking points and per-planned attack lines on cue. If you want to see that stuff, go to the aquarium and watch the dolphin show, at least they get a fish when they perform correctly.
Just because Williams and the dude from Politico have "Journalist" on their business cards doesn't mean they are any better at getting information than anyone else. In fact, the evidence is quite to the contrary. The sooner the GOP gets this, the better off we'll all be.
As for how they fared in the dog and pony show...
Rick Perry was...uneven. Yes, let's be charitable. His AGW answer was simply awful. The name a scientist bit was cheap but Perry should have been able to lay out his reasons for questioning AGW. He came off as a talking point machine who didn't know why he opposed it for anything other than political reasons. I'm not saying that's who he is but it's how he came off. His staff needs to get him some talking points on CERN and Roy Spencer at Alabama-Huntsville.
He also needs to make it crystal clear that he's not talking about messing with Social Security for anyone on or near it. He's in big trouble if he can't make that argument.
Overall, I give him a pass since it's his initial dip in the pool but he needs to do better. Part of the problem of getting in late is you don't have time to do previews in small town Iowa, you're going right to Broadway. And when your the national leader by double digits out of the gate, you need to make sure you meet expectations. Perry simply didn't last night. It's not fatal by any stretch but it's...something to keep an eye on.
Mitt was Mitt. He's much better than he was 4 years ago and can give and take a shot now. He's also made it clear with his Social Security attacks on Perry that he's taking a page out of the Democrats playbook. It's worked for them in the past, it could work for him now.
All along I thought Mitt wanted a big field to fracture the conservative vote so he could piece together a coalition of everyone else and win by a plurality, along the lines of McCain in '08. While I still think that's his goal (Run Sarah Run! is his deepest wish), it's clear he's willing to take Perry head on. He's not going to try and out conservative him since that's folly but rather he'll try and make Perry look too extreme and raise electability questions. Think of Kerry/Dean in '04, Democrats fell in love with Dean but in the end Kerry won because he made Democrats think it was too risky to run Dean. I'm sure Mitt will love being compared to Kerry but I think after last night, that's going to be the dynamic.
As for the rest, meh.
Newt was awesome. After Monday in SC and last night he's my very, very distant second choice. Yes, I know all the reasons that's insane and stupid and crazy and I don't care. Everyone is flawed and if Perry implodes, screw it, I'll take brilliant crazy Newt in a suicide run for the nomination over Mitt. Don't bother telling me all the reasons that's wrong. I know them, I just won't care at that point.
All the others....remember that week Michele Bachmann was the hot ticket? That was weird, right? She did have a good line about why the media's favorite 10:1 spending to tax hikes thing is a sucker bet for the GOP. It was the only useful invocation of Reagan all night.
In short, bad format, not a stellar night or an awful one for Perry and if Perry turns out to be the second coming of teh Fred, I'm going to need a strait jacket.

This is one of the major reasons why both of those marhinal idiots need to drop out, or the other candidates demand that they not be in the debates (may add some of the other < 5% candidates to that list as well).

Perry's response on Social Security thrilled me on one level and terrified me on an electability level. It's not a death sentence -- beware those who are acting as it is -- but it can become one unless he pivots, FAST. His global warming and Texas-record answers were just...embarrassing, honestly. Dude didn't seem prepared to defend his record! WTF?? Debate prep, people!
The lack of questions about the economy, jobs, or spending was disgraceful. And really the biggest story of the night, IMO. What a bunch of fucking hacks.

I am not going to be on this thread long, since I can smell flame war, but I do have two things to say:
1) Obama is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure; and
2) HereÂ’s the point: debates within Republican primaries ought to be about informing Republican voters what candidates believe, and why.
This is why I think the debates preceding the primaries should be staged by the parties themselves, or by local groups, and the newsies can sit on their hands to ask questions during the Presidential and VP debates after the primary season is over. You'd get a heck of a lot more out of a candidate debate staged by the RNC than you got out of that travesty last night. And if the networks wanted to act pissy and refuse to televise them, fine. There's always the internet.

Mostly, I need the Republicans to stick on message (I don't care which one): Barack Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure.
The answer to AGW questions?: "I don't think we can be too concerned with a few theoretically possible tenths of a degree when people are losing their homes. We need to get the economy moving again, and then we can worry about any possible human-made climate impact."
The answer to Gay Marriage questions?: "I'm not sure that our Federal Government should be worrying about that right now, when people are losing their jobs and the economy is on its death-bed."
The answer to Evolution v/ Intelligent Design?: "The Federal Government shouldn't be wasting time telling local school districts how they should teach science when the deficit is over 14 trillion dollars. We need to focus on reducing the deficit, reducing the debt, and getting America back on the path to prosperity."
See? Not hard.

it is like the GOP has some kind of Charlie Brown costume fetish and dreams about finally kicking the damn ball...
Bambi never had to face limbaugh and MSNBC is every bit the partisan that Limbaugh is....
we are always allowing the newsies to control what we talk about to the point that they are in essence defining us more than we define ourselves on the first handshake with the moderate mushy middle....
truth be told not ONE of the debate victims of MSNBC pulled off reagan's trick of turning the questions back on the host, and talking past the media gotchas to the viewer.....
Newt came closest but there's no way in hell he can win.

Governor Perry, we're going to begin with you. You're the newcomer here on stage. You probably saw this coming a mile away. You have touted your state's low taxes, the lack of regulation, tough tort reform as the recipe for job growth in the Lone Star State, but Texas ranks last among those who have completed high school, there are only eight other states with more living in poverty, no other state has more working at or below the minimum wage. So is that the kind of answer all Americans are looking for?
No agenda there though, huh?
Posted by: lu at September 08, 2011 06:58 AM (pLTLS)
The problem is that it sounded like mealy-mouthed half-hearted, half-verbalized pro forma bullshit before he moved on to what he REALLY believed in, which is that it's a "ponzi scheme" and a "monstrous lie" (look for that last phrase in particular to get repeated ad nauseum in a general election, shorn of the "to our kids" context). It just seems terribly obvious that his heart wasn't in calmly and thoroughly reassuring seniors that they weren't going to get touched (before moving on to the "we need to reform" bit). Rather, he sort of muttered that bit as tepid prelude before getting fired up about what he REALLY believes in.
You see the optics problem here?

Here, lemme pour kerosene on the flame war, is Newt electable? That's not (totally) a bitchy comment, it's an actual question. Is Newt electable? I would hold my nose and vote for him in the general, of course, but I'm really not sure how he'd play on the mass stage.

Bachman did horribly and failed to answered questions. Ron Paul is the crazy uncle falling for the MFM bait to attack others. Huntsman is another Olympia Snowe. Gingrich called Brian Williams out for being a hack and a waterboy for Barry and it was funny to watch Williams be uneasy the rest of the night because of it. Santorum, just doesn't seem to connect, though generally well spoken. Romney waffled Social Security and Romneycare, but debated well otherwise. Perry didn't deliver consistently and his body language was all over the place. Yet he still landed many good punches on Obama and distinguished himself from Romney on a few issues.

He also needs to make it crystal clear that he's not talking about messing with Social Security for anyone on or near it. He's in big trouble if he can't make that argument.
As a practical political matter, this is probably right. In America ca. 2012 you probably can't get elected saying you might have to cut benefits, not just for youngsters who are still decades away from getting Social Security, but for the old coots who are on the cusp or are already receiving monthly checks.
As a matter of practical economics, however, I don't think you can get to a solvent system anytime soon -- and we need to get there soon -- without cutting benefits for current recipients, or at the very least limiting COLAs and probably (unfortunately) means-testing at the high-income/high-wealth end. And I don't see why you can't raise the retirement age for people under the age of, say, 60, rather than the current proposals for people under 55 or even under 50. Believe me, people who are 60 or older are going to have to change their expectations for retirement anyway; they might as well change their expectations for Social Security.
Finally, it's also a moral issue. The generations currently on Social Security or the baby-boomers nearing it are the people who ran up huge deficits and handed younger generations a national debt that they'll have to repay over their lifetimes. Is it really moral to say that, in addition to leaving you an impoverished nation, we also want you to bear all the burden of returning this Ponzi scheme to solvency? Everybody should have skin in this game.
Maybe I'm in the minority (probably so), but I'll vote for the first guy who says, "No, I can't promise that I'll protect Social Security exactly as it is for current recipients or people nearing retirement age. We may all need to make sacrifices to make our country great again, and we can't just exempt certain classes of people from that shared sacrifice."

Agreed almost in toto. Perry was not as good as I had hoped, but he finished strong - that's gotta be good for something. Newt is growing on me - he has a firmer and deeper grasp of constitutional and governance issues than anyone else on the stage.
Perry/Gingrich 2012? That could work, and I would love how liberal heads would explode with another strong VP in office instead of a placeholder like Biden.
And f-uck MSNBC and it's 'moderators'.
By the way,
Obama is a Stuttering Clusterfuck Of A Miserable Failure.
Posted by: West at September 08, 2011 07:05 AM (1Rgee)
In my mind that should remove Santorum, Bachmann and Paul, none of whom has ever even made it to Congressional leadership positions. Then, if you must have a debate, get rid of the moderators asking the questions altogether. Go round robin and let the candidates pose a question to another candidate and give them time to answer it. Then we can judge the candidates not only on their answers but on their questions as well. Sure, most of them would likely have asked questions of Perry but he's the one most in need of vetting from the perspective of someone not living in my great state.
Posted by: Laughing in Texas at September 08, 2011 07:05 AM (dL9LY)
The AGW question was a trap..... A trap that Perry did not fall into.
If he had named scientists who had published against the AGW theory, then liberal moderators would have simply countered with more scientists that have published in favor of AGW.
Perry did the right thing in declaring that the whole subject is not settled.

I disagree. He needs to hold to what he said. If people want to believe in the fairytale that Social Security will live on forever and ever, let's not be a party to the delusion like Mitt the fucktastic cocksucker is pledging to do for votes.
Because the system will fail eventually, and we'd be much better off with our hands clean when it does.

Actually, I disagree. The moderators asked known Dem talking points and it allowed the voters to see how our guys (and gal) will withstand the barrage. We need ways to weed out our candidates. This is one.
I think all our candidates did very, very well last night against these questions.

I take exception to the notion that he didn't say anything about it at all. Hell, by some accounts, you'd think he said "fuck the seniors!"

I'm on the Perry bandwagon and I agree with Drew's analysis.
He sounded awful on one or two questions. The death penalty answer was very good, but that's a niche issue.
He needs to bone up on AGW, Social Security and Jobs answers as those are going to be the issues he'll be questioned on most in the coming debates.
I personally liked the South Carolina debates. I'm a big fan of letting people express their ideas in full rather than in 30 second sound bites.
I cannot stress this enough, Why does the GOP still participate in debates hosted by cable and network news organizations?? WHY?
They've never been fair to you and they never will be. All the moderators are democrats at best and extreme leftists at worst.
The GOP should set up its own debates and offer the rights to broadcast those debates to networks. We cannot keep trying to kick the football, Lucy will pull it away everytime.

Also, re the moderators: all you have to do is consider the entirely imaginary, Cloud Cuckoo-land scenario of a Democratic Party presidential debate hosted by Fox News where the moderators are Brit Hume and Sean Hannity, and the after-debate panel discussion included Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Ann Coulter, and Mark Steyn. And, for the designated affirmative action Hispanic immigration question, they bring out Marco Rubio.

This is how the SEC defines a Ponzi Scheme --
A Ponzi scheme is an investment fraud that involves the payment of purported returns to existing investors from funds contributed by new investors. Ponzi scheme organizers often solicit new investors by promising to invest funds in opportunities claimed to generate high returns with little or no risk.
I for one appreciate a candidate who will call it what it is.

To those giving an attaboy to Perry on Social Security, I will agree that I'm glad he called it what it is, but that's not enough.
You need to explain to the uninformed and apolitical why that is.
We mock Ron Paul because he makes huge claims as statements of fact and then assumes everyone understand.
Sound money is good, Gold is good, getting rid of FEMA is good, Open borders are good, etc etc.
Fine, I may be willing to buy some of those, but explain to me why it's good.
What is sound money, what is our current system and why is it better? (many here may know the answer but the vast majority of americans do not)
As for Perry on SS, sure I'll buy it's a Ponzi scheme, but you need to explain why it's a ponzi scheme. You don't need to go into minutiae, but explain how demographics, IOUs, interest rates, SSDI, etc etc.
You can't command people to accept positions, you need to lead them there.
I hope he works on this before the next debate and on the campaign trail.

I've never disliked Romney and, frankly, he's stepped up his game. Yes. Masscare is a yoke around his neck, but it would not stop me from voting for him. I wouldn't give it a second thought. Yet, Perry is still my first pick.
I hope the two of them don't spend too much time tearing each other apart because they would make one hell of a team.

To those giving an attaboy to Perry on Social Security, I will agree that I'm glad he called it what it is, but that's not enough.
You need to explain to the uninformed and apolitical why that is.
Yeah, but a debate (if you can call it that, when there are 8 participants) is not the place to do that. Do it at campaign stops, in op-eds, and in adds.

And I agree with the Newt analysis. This is what he was made for. He really was the best at this debate. Its just his tendency to go go for the random off-the-wall liberal idea that freaks me out. But if Perry implodes he's becoming my number 2. Mitt seems likeable enough, but his baggage is much worse than Newt's. Newt really does seem to have an awesome command of the issues, facing us, and more importantly for me, a true understanding of the underlying principles and philosophies. I'd love to see Newt as Perry's press secretary. I know it'll never happen, but can you imagine those daily breifings?

The debate cycle will be very damaging to Perry.
He's 61, he's never been any good at it, and that's not going to change magically all the sudden.
Its a real dilemma for him. If Perry is himself, then what happened last night will continuously repeat itself. He's introducing himself to the American people at large, so that's not good. If he plays it safe, that's quite Mittish, so why wouldn't people choose the real Mitt?
If he asserts himself as frontrunner, he damages himself. If he blends in, he fades.
The debates are MSM shows; candidates do them at their peril because they lose narrative control completely. Its all gotchas and post-debate spin by media hostiles.
As a Palin supporter, I've argued long and hard she should skip as many of these as possible, even though she tends to perform quite well. Its just not worth the risk, especially so early.
Why did Rick get in so soon, exposing himself early to a format he knew he was no good at?
Same goes for the general election. The Republican nominee should consider doing no debates at all rather than lose narrative control of their message on the eve of the vote.
The media hostiles will proclaim Obama the runaway winner, no matter how much he may be, as you say here, a SCOAMF.

Well, I do agree that there is -- the science is -- is not settled on this. The idea that we would put Americans' economy at -- at -- at jeopardy based on scientific theory that's not settled yet, to me, is just -- is nonsense. I mean, it -- I mean -- and I tell somebody, I said, just because you have a group of scientists that have stood up and said here is the fact, Galileo got outvoted for a spell.
But the fact is, to put America's economic future in jeopardy, asking us to cut back in areas that would have monstrous economic impact on this country is not good economics and I will suggest to you is not necessarily good science. Find out what the science truly is before you start putting the American economy in jeopardy. Now, that's just not anti-science. Perry resists signing on to the opinion of the experts who portray themselves as the scientific consensus, but he didn't say he "clearly doesn't want to study [climate change] any further," which is the way Chris Matthews characterized his remarks. Perry said he wanted accurate science and more science — especially when it is the basis for proposals that would have a "monstrous economic impact."
Citing statistics showing success improving air quality in Texas, Perry says:
That's the way you need to do it, not by some scientist somewhere saying, "Here is what we think is happening out there." The fact of the matter is, the science is not settled on whether or not the climate change is being impacted by man to the point where we're going to put America's economics in jeopardy. That's not anti-science. That is a practical man setting a high burden of proof about the degree to which science must be "settled" where the effect on the economy is severe. You may disagree on the question of how settled the science is, but that doesn't make him anti-science.

I concur, sven makes that point as well. A 30 second format isn't condusive to intellegent discussion.
However, I would disagree with sven about most Americans knowing SS is a ponzi scheme given its current configuration. I would bet the vast majority do not know or even understand how it works.
As someone who writes checks for dozens of employees, I can tell you that most people don't even look at what is being deducted out of their check.
Apathy reigns in America and it has for some time. That's why I am a big advocate for the ending of withholding taxes. People need to see where the money is going , in what percentages and be forced to write a check to the government themselves.
Only then will they really understand what is going on.

I don't know if I go quite that far, but I can certainly see it on the horizon.
Look, we have (theoretically) two options here: pick someone who will actually fix things (or at least try) or not. If we choose "not," then we may as well choose someone who will go ahead and take America off the cliff "Thelma & Louise" style, so we can go ahead and get the grief over and get to the rebuilding- and that's going to be the Democrat (sadly).
Now, I'm not sure that a vote for Romney is a vote for "not," (which is why I'm not quite to the 'not Romney' level), but if it looks like it is, come election time, I'm going to have to take a long-hard look at what I think is objectively better for my kids, and their (eventual) kids.

But, with others, it's just that they've never bothered to think about it, and they have a (sadly misplaced) instinctive trust in Government. There's also the incendiary nature of the phrase "Ponzi Scheme." You're not just calling the other side wrong, but evil, and you'd better be able to back that up.
People who might agree with you that it's bad can be turned off if they think you're being overly-harsh with the opposition.

One of the marginal candidates needs to step up and be a goon. The GOP needs to gather some hard opposition research on the moderators and bomb the hell out of them live, on stage, until these assholes learn to behave themselves. I think Newt fired that salvo very effectively last night when he confronted the moderators on their attempt to bait some infighting. Even AOHell was accusing him of being confrontational last night but he scored with the audience and me as well with his statements on that topic.

Unfortunately, Romney's campaign is saying something pretty close to what the Dems always accuse us of wanting to do:
What’s crazy, say gleefully incredulous Romney aides, is nominating a GOP candidate who thinks that “by any measure Social Security is a failure.”
“The Republican Party has to defend the position of the nominee,” said top Romney adviser Stuart Stevens. “Every House candidate that runs, every Senate candidate that runs, would have to run on the Perry plan to kill Social Security.”

Charity is an individual matter, and the government in robbing the citizen of that power robs the citizen from their personal oversight as to how that charity will be administered.

These things are not really 'debates'..... They are more like media ambushes.
Palin is looking more and more cowardly by the day, by avoiding being asked any tough policy questions. She throws out little carefully prepared statements designed to make people think they know where she stands on issues.....but she really isn't taking a very firm stance on anything.

Why Perry was suddenly looked to by the GOP masses as some sort of conservative purist with the political skills to beat BO is something I just don't understand.
His track record on illegal immigration is atrocious. The man opposed E-Verify. He supported in-state tuition rates for illegal aliens. But all I hear is "move along, nothing to see here" from those who are so gung-ho about the man.
There is no strident conservative in the race who is electible. Bachmann is stridently conservative, but unelectible. Romney is modestly conservative (not stridently) and is electible IMHO. Perry is not stridently conservative, and I don't believe will ultimately be electible. GWB is too fresh on people's memories. "LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — Hundreds of Longshoremen stormed the Port of Longview early Thursday, overpowered and held security guards, damaged railroad cars, and dumped grain that is the center of a labor dispute, said Longview Police Chief Jim Duscha.
Six guards were held hostage for a couple of hours after 500 or more Longshoremen broke down gates about 4:30 a.m. and smashed windows in the guard shack, he said.
No one was hurt, and nobody has been arrested. Most of the protesters returned to their union hall after cutting brake lines and spilling grain from car at the EGT terminal, Duscha said.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union believes it has the right to work at the facility, but the company has hired a contractor thatÂ’s staffing a workforce of other union laborers."
And this, apparently, wasn't even an oppressed workers versus greedy capitalists fight. It was about which union goons which pieces of the pie.

Could I forget the couch with Nasty McBotox, Tiffanys, Calista!, the serial divorces, Scuzzaflooza, the fat ego on that fat fuck? I have momemtarily considered this. Throwing the long ball to the butter-fingered receiver who, if he should actually catch the ball, is just as likely to run out of bounds and congratulate himself than run to the endzone? Wow. Is it coming to this? This is how America ends? Will a deadlocked convention draft Richard Lugar?
Used to want Palin but that's over. Bachmann as long as I don't have to listen to her, she's become a cliche machine. Liked Romney last time but he bugs me particularly on MassCare. I want Perry to be the big swinging champ but I was a little underwhelmed. So, call me conflicted.
I'm probably going to redirect more of my energies to the Senate as insurance against losing to BO. At this point putting all the eggs in the Presidential basket is too risky even though we cannot afford to lose to the SCOMF. We need more eggs in a lot of baskets. Same goes at the State level. The State Legislatures may be our last line of defense against the runaway executive branch.
Yeah, and our candidates shouldn't give in to the pretense that the MFM is some objective arbiter of the important issues. They should recognize that they are running against the MFM too.

That's how I felt last night.
Let's just see to it that Romney isn't the nominee. Reforming Social Security or entitlements will be damn hard without someone who is honest about the problem. And that's just one of many problems.
Perry will hopefully be much better in the next debate. I think he needs to be. He's got my vote anyway, because he's got the most conservative record. Spin aside, he's the best candidate.
But anyway, if Romney's the guy, us conservatives will have to pull out all the stops. I think he's going to have a lot of problems against Obama that may not be very clear right now. They are going to hit Romney a lot harder, and will less decency, and I just think Romney is quite vulnerable to lies about corruption, nastiness about his religion or private life, and flip flop claims that are frankly pretty accurate.
Romney would be a much better president than Obama. Even if he's a flip flopper, he's an intelligent man who would want to be reelected. Getting rid of Obama is worth more than just a vote.
But I know your sentiment is very common. It would be really nice if Romney weren't the nominee.

Not really (whatever their intent). It's pretty obvious that a state with low wages and/or cheap and/or illegal labor is going to have a certain advantage. If everyone is willing to work for minimum wage, of course employment will be high, or higher.

Guy, I'm thinking we give the nomination to the man/woman who demonstrates the ability to win it straight up. Newt was the only one that prevented this debate from turning into a circular firing squad. Thats leadership and situational awareness. Two traits you might want in a Prez. He did it without damaging any speaker on the dias. Smart. Cool. Capable. Like I said, he demonstrated his ability while the others compared their records. Newt has a meaningful record. Time we rethink his candidacy.

It would have been funny if Perry punched Ron Paul and then said, "You're a doctor, deal with it".
Also, I noted this yesterday, it's no coincidence that Ron Paul was next to Rick Perry at the debate. Paul has been attacking Perry since he got in and MSNBC sought to take advantage of that.
Also, these networks keep out the lesser lights by having a polling percentage cutoff to prevent a stage of 20 people. If I'm not mistaken, MSNBC's was at least 4% in one of 8 polls and Huntsman didn't have 4% in any of them.
It just goes to show that the media still has a decent amount of power and influence if it can through sheer force of will get a candidate no one wants, on stage during a debate.

Yes, but he would still not be the president we need. The message from last night's debate was clear - Romney won't be cutting entitlements. If he addresses it at all, he will try to 'fix' entitlements, probably the same way he 'fixed' healthcare in MA. He will turn his dynamic, technocratic mind to the task and make things worse.
There are very real, tangible problems facing the country which a mannequin like Romney is ill-suited for.

No one is spouting off all the triumphant bragging that we saw in heavy doses prior to last night. Are the scales starting to fall from your eyes? Rick Perry is a decent candidate. He isn't God. He has a lot of weaknesses. Some of which were blindingly obvious last night.
Frankly, he was pathetic as he bounced and cried "that's not accurate, that's not true" as the applause from Romney's partisans in the crowd washed over him after Romney pointed out that job growth was stronger in TX under both of Perry's predecessors.
He had a golden opportunity to make the moral case for the death penalty but instead turned that big fat pitch down the center of the plate into a "Rah, Rah, Texas" brag and played to the baying of the crowd. Piss poor is what that was.
Not ready for prime time, clearly.

If that was his biggest flub, he's fine.
I want to see him go on the attack on science issues, though. I am confident he has the numbers to prove how pro-science the state of Texas is. He should have those numbers at his fingertips - things like patents on new energy technologies, research expenditures in biomedicine, etc (hell, I'd even trundle out the Nobel laureate numbers, iirc UT Southwestern Med Ctr had several) - and go on the offensive.

I don't know what the problem is. It's not Perry's innate ability to debate. I've seen him better than this, for sure.
Part of the issue is that Romney really is brilliant at this. So there's not much margin for error. And Romney is taking the easier ground on many issues, picked perfectly for political reasons rather than principled ones (in my opinion). But Perry just plain didn't perform very well, and he'll need a lot of prep and focus to improve his game.
This leads to the core problem. We have too long an election cycle, and it makes it much harder for current leaders to compete. We're left with professional politicians int he truest sense. Those running for office for years on end without doing anything else. And legislators who really have no basic responsibilities. We have a stupid way of picking our nominee, then. Perry's main problem is that he's going to keep doing a good job in Texas, so he's not going to be on the same competitive ground as the other candidates.
Combine that with their rabidly insecure need to pile on Perry, and it's a wonder we didn't have some serious gaffes last night.

Lomborg believes in AGW, so that would not be a source to site first (be just thinks we can't do anything about it on a cost-effective basis); he could have mentioned farming in Greenland; the hide the decline BS; the CERN findings; the fact that ice cores show ice ages with much higher CO2 atmospheric concentrations; and maybe how much more money is available to "prove" AGW than to disprove it.
My fear is that the average viewer does little more than "vote" on image. Perry seemed reasonably sane, and "Texans are conservative"; Romney seemed reasonably sane, but voting for a Mormon from MA as a GOP nominee seems insane, so Romney doesn't have a chance? Hope that's wrong, or that most of the people who care at this point are not that typical of who will vote in the primaries.
Actually, my guess, and I believe, Romney's bet is that this time, moderate Republicans, and independents and even Dems who can vote in open primaries will determine who gets the nomination. The people who don't usually vote in primaries are too scared not to vote this time, and will get Romney the nomination.

I ask that question to everyone I know who is under 55 and no one has ever said yes. Well, at least none who aren't Dem bootlickers. That no one under 55 is counting on getting SS is pretty good proof that a lot of Americans know SS is a Ponzi scheme and it won't be there for 'em. Isbout time the fedral gubmint start matching its reality to everyone else's.
Anybody who knows what a Ponzi scheme is knows SS is just that. In fact,SS is worse than a Ponzi scheme. At least a Ponzi scheme is voluntary. There's nothing voluntary about SS. And in a Ponzi scheme the crook organizing it never can change the rules for distribution without inciting the ... curiosity ... of the defrauded. Not so SS. Everyone up here knows there is going to be a different set a rules for SS in 20 years. But still folks gotta keep payin' in.
Now I'm goin' to talk to Americans 55 and older. Your gubmint made you a promise. You kept your end of the deal. Your gubmint will keep its end of the deal when you elect me President.

Do you even know what you are talking about? Newt was the architect of the 1994 Republican takeover of the House, the first in 42 years. Do you even remember that the Dem-Rockerfeller Republican lock had branded Goldwater conservatism as a perpetual loser, forever vanquished, until Newt and his insurgents came along?
Newt was suitably chastised after his "right-wing social engineering" remark. Yes, he occasionally gets off the reservation but not because of a desire for McCain style compromise/surrender, but rather because he's looking for the sweet spot of that set of issues that 75% of Americans can agree on. Give him a problem and he'll come up with a conservative solution to it.
I'll tell you, Newt is growing on me. Obama wouldn't stand a chance in a fair fight.

With an abusive personality, cheer on the bully as if he would never hurt you, as if he's your champion. Dream on, keep your nose clean within the corrupt and authoritarian establishment, as if paying dhimmi dues insures any protection from abuse.
It isn't as if Perry ever stood up for the politically incorrect populations of American citizens, either as a Democrat Legislator and Commissioner during Clinton's burning of the Branch Davidians without trial after denying them the right to surrender to the Texas Rangers as the dead victims had repeatedly offered to do; or as a Republican while removing all "children" under the age of 21 from their polygamous homes when CPS didn't even have facilities to house the hundreds at once, babies lost in the system for over a year, all on the basis of false testimony. So much for innocent until proven guilty. So much for common courtesy, decency, and rule of law.
But during his 10-year tenure as Governor, Perry's fashionable "compassion" has enabled illegal aliens to gain tax funded benefits, raising the illiteracy of Texas children in public education, increasing the costs of medical insurance given so many illegal aliens taking treatment without paying anything in return, and in-state "outsourcing" jobs displacing highly skilled US citizen tradesmen, journeymen, artisans and craftsmen in this right-to-work State of Texas who are given the pink slip by employers that re-fill those laid-off positions with illegal immigrants.
He's had 10 years to present and implement solutions, but didn't. Perry did spend his wad on forcing against Texans' will the NAFTA's Trans-Texas Corridor (eliminating border control and burdening local businesses but providing himself with plenty of kickbacks), the STD vaccine executive order (nice Merck kickback), and the arbitrary and forced removal of every person under the age of 21 from their homes while denied any contact with any family member based upon unsubstantiated testimony that proved false under the slightest amount of investigation (of all people, an out-of-state Obama campaign worker with a record of making false reports).

I have been screaming about the avoiding of certain topics since the first debates. It seems like these debates have ALL been an exercise in gotcha questions for Republicans in general and some of the candidates in particular.
I haven't seen the transcripts yet, but did a single AGW question crop up last night? Those are the things the base would like to know stances on but no questions have been asked.
