Actual Surprise: ABCNews Covers Solyndra, Top of the Show
— Ace

I tried to goad @jaketapper the other day, saying his network would cover it for thirty seconds, with twenty seconds of that "context" about Enron.

Not what they did though.

Not the longest report, but the questions were properly framed -- "Did the White House rush a half billion of your dollars to a company certain to fail?"

And more at Hot Air, as Mark Levin interviews an employee who said everyone knew Solyndra was going to fail.

From an ABCNews print article:

Department of Energy officials said the rates for all of its green energy loans were set by the bank using a formula, and SolyndraÂ’s favorable terms were not the result of special treatment.

“All borrowers under the [government loan guarantee] program receive the same treatment,” Energy Department spokesman Damien LaVera wrote to iWatch and ABC News in response to questions.

Um, no. What happens is that all borrowers in equivalent situations with equivalent risk and equivalent likelihood of repayment may get the same treatment.

But the whole point of analyzing these companies is to define them, categorize them in terms of risk and such.

That's why it's important to know how these "models" came to the incorrect conclusion that Solyndra would be fantastically profitable.

Note in the below video, at 3:36, Congressman Morgan Griffith tries to find out why all the models predicted that Solyndra's profits would -- are you ready? -- double the year following the loan.

How did they come up with that? What detailed economic model suggested a doubling of profits (during a horrendous global economy, with a business model doomed to fail) in a year?

Why, they based it on... projections provided by Solyndra CEOs. Just accepted those claims, and then, based on this stuff, pushed through the loans at super-cheap rates (and they're not loans -- they're outright gifts, as there was never any plausible way they'd be paid back).

Maybe if analysts hadn't rushed to get the loans approved by the time of the photo-op they could have done a little more work, eh? Maybe come up with their own projections, rather than just plugging in the Solyndra CEOs "double profits in one year" claim into the formula, maybe?

Not to be confused with a ready mix plant.

Now also note that the EPA will be forcing about 12 to 18 plant closures as the result of the new gas emission regulations.

27 7 It's kind of weird how this Solyndra story seems to have been fast-tracked, both in the media and in Congress, but Fast & Furious is still getting *crickets* after months.

Yes, that's a good puzzle. Perhaps the solution is that a corporation is involved this time, and any good liberal will blame a corporation when there is one in the picture, so perhaps they can cover this story, and still not be shunned at Upper East Side cocktail parties.

Also, reporters probably feel the need to act like reporters some of the time. Writing about the time when he was a reporter in Nevada, during the silver book, Mark Twain wrote:

New claims were taken daily, and it was the friendly custom to run straight to the newspaper offices, give the reporter forty or fifty "feet," and get him to go and examine the mine and publish a notice of it.[...] we generally said a word or two to the effect that the "indications" were good, or that the ledge was "six feet wide," or that the rock "resembled the Comstock" (and so it did - but as a general thing the resemblance was not startling enough to knock you down). If the rock was moderately promising, we followed the custom of the country, used strong adjectives and frothed at the mouth as if a very marvel in silver discoveries had transpired [...]Occasionally we patched up and varnished our reputation for discrimination and stern, undeviating accuracy, by giving some old abandoned claim a blast that ought to have made its dry bones rattle - and then somebody would seize it and sell it on the fleeting notoriety thus conferred upon it.

48 Okay, here's the truth - anyone, and I mean anyone, that tells you green energy works - is one of two things.

1. A liar or
2. They just don't understand the subject (i.e. fu^king idiots)

I submit that most anyone you see promoting "green energy" are in the number 2 category.  Fossil fuels were made by God.  Fossil fuels are somewhere in the 90% range of efficiency - in other words, when you burn gasoline, something close to 100% of the fuel is converted to usable energy.

Solar technology is only in the 20% or below range of efficiency once it is converted to usable energy.  Wind power is even less.

So, until some miraculous invention comes along that brings Solar and Wind into the 70 or 80%+ efficiency range, there is simply no viable substitute for Fossil Fuels.  This is why there will never be a good business case for developing Solar or Wind until major advances in technology come along.

We're trying to beat God here people - it ain't easy and may not be possible.

When this whole thing came out, I researched it. Not extensively, because there was no need to. It. Is. A. Scam. End of story.

Yet millions, nay billions of politicians are still foisting this magical thinking scam on the masses, who are slopping it up like starving pigs.

What's next, after the "green energy" myth is dead? Tesla-esque "free energy generators" that will only be free if the taxpayers give BILLIONS to the creators, who will never, ever be able to make them work? Is that where we're headed?

Posted by: shibumi at September 14, 2011 04:58 PM (z63Tr)

In late 2009 I looked into going to school and learning how to install all of this green energy crap to possibly start my own business. The line was that these sort of jobs would be good paying blue colar jobs, along the line of what plumbers and electricians make.

When I went to the community college all of the classes were filled and I would have to wait until January 2010 to get the loan and register for classes.

One of the first things I pulled up from a simple google search was that a few companies were marketing a solar shingle or film out of Home Depot/Lowe's  that was just as good as a big ass solar panel, that weighed nowhere near as much as a solar panel and cost a fraction of a solar panel. It was a DIY type thing, no 'green collar' workers needed. Someone without a student loan payment could just roll the stuff out on his roof and glue it down and then pay an electrician to install an AC/DC inverter.

I feel bad for all those folks that got in line ahead of me. Their time was wasted. Their hope for a better life was busted and they probably pissed away a nice chunk of change that they couldn't afford. All based on lies told to them by their government.

151 Here's what I want to know about "green" energy.

How much energy is to produce the energy generated from the green technology from cradle to grave?  For example, how much energy does it take to make the aluminum, etc.that goes into a Solyndra solar panel or a windmill, for example, from the time the Bauxite and other resources are mined until the damn thing is no longer usable and has to removed and disposed of?  How much air and water pollution (according to the EPA's list of air and water pollutants) is generated from cradle to grave of the solar panel?  How much material is used, cradle to grave?  What happens to the energy generation technology when it is obsolete or no longer works - can it be recycled, reused, or must it be landfilled?  How does the green energy technology compare to coal, natural gas, hydroelectric, nuclear, or oil when applying these same criterion?

One more question... can the resources consumed to generate "green energy" be better used for some other purpose?  For example, using corn to make ethanol takes a resource out of the food supply.

201 Alinsky tells us where we are headed:

The goal is to foment enough public discontent, moral confusion, and outright chaos to spark the social upheaval that Marx, Engels, and Lenin predicted

-- a revolution whose foot soldiers view the status quo as fatally flawed and wholly unworthy of salvation.

Thus, the theory goes, the people will settle for nothing less than that status quoÂ’s complete collapse -- to be followed by the erection of an entirely new system upon its ruins.

Toward that end, they will be apt to follow the lead of charismatic radical organizers who project an aura of confidence and vision (Obama, Van Jones, etc.)

Add this to the NYT/WaPo stories in the last 10 days that are anti-SCOAMF, and I think we can plainly see that the narrative has began. This morning, I said that I have now changed the odds of Obama either resigning or facing a serious primary contender from 10-1 to 5-1. The more I think about it, the more I think it should be 4-1. Don't think he'll go willingly, but his enablers might have other ideas.

Here's the thing though - this strategy won't work in America.  We have a history of success based on a system that most Americans believe we have strayed from.  That's why any social unrest would demand a return to our previous system, not one Americans have fought against and witnessed fail over the course of history.

Yes, this, exactly. Much as we hate to concede it, the guy does have a gift, and parts of it even work on us, even though we think they don't. I mean, he's astonishing. Every month, maybe even every week, he throws out egregious lies about what Republicans are doing, then goes off and does that thing himself, without bothering to pause in between, much of the time. He lies his ass off constantly, and gets away with it more often than not, even to Republicans. His big jobs speech? He said every part of it had been accepted by both parties at one time or another. How many noticed that the key piece, the "how do you pay for all this crap", has never been accepted by Republicans? He gets away with more lies than any man I've ever seen, and like you, I sometimes have to sort them out later because I didn't pick up on them at the time. The audacity of his lies is like nothing I've ever seen before, and whoever we nominate is in for a tough battle.

I'm innocently watching "King of the Hill" reruns, and what comes on but an ad for a new school. The school is the "Ecotech Institute," a school that prepares people for careers in the "green energy" field.

Here's a bit from their website:

-- the first and only college entirely focused on preparing graduates for careers in the rapidly growing fields of renewable energy, sustainable design and energy efficiency- with practical, hands-on training designed to meet the demands of employers in the green economy.

So... what we're doing here is providing opportunities for people to go into six figures of debt to prepare for a non existent job at a non existent company.

I mean, sure, there are no real jobs for philosophy/ performance art majors, but everyone knows that. This seems to be worse, simply because they're training people for imaginary jobs, while the philosophy/ performance art students aren't training for anything.

Cloward Piven indeed.

253 Obama sees himself an Alinsky hero...

"he said that organizers must be entirely unpredictable and unmistakably willing -- for the sake of the moral principles in whose name they claim to act -- to watch society descend into utter chaos and anarchy.

He stated that they must be prepared, if necessary, to “go into a state of complete confusion and draw [their] opponent into the vortex of the same confusion."

258 So... what we're doing here is providing opportunities for people to go into six figures of debt to prepare for a non existent job at a non existent company.

Probably not six figures, but twenty grand at least I'll bet.

Like the Cordon Bleu academies where you spend $60,000 to get a job paying $8.00/hr as a fry cook.

No speech.  Go to therightscoop[dot]com.  He was trying to rally black journalists to push his jobs bill and they laughed at him.  He was not happy.

"If the "progressives" are succesful in orchestrating a crash in this society..... they are likely to be the target of the ire of the general citizenry.... and I doubt it would end well for them."

Just go to your local community college or small liberal arts school or college...

That's where there at...hell, go to any school, K-12, University, Head Start...whatever.

It's where they hide, to do the most damage, the little scoundrels with that freak twinkle in their eye.

267 Administration ignored warnings on CLASS:

"Even as leading Democrats offered assurances to the contrary, government experts repeatedly warned that a new long-term care insurance plan could go belly up, saddling taxpayers with another underfunded benefit program, according to emails disclosed by congressional investigators.

...A longstanding priority of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports program, or CLASS, was spliced into the health care law despite nagging budget worries. Administration emails and documents reveal that alarms were sounded earlier and more widely than previously thought. Congressional Republicans seeking repeal of the program provided the materials to The Associated Press."

279 Sounds like they accidentally fed the profit projection data through the climate model program.

Posted by: Voluble at September 14, 2011 06:42 PM (JKX4x)

280 The problem with these "models" is they too often equate production capacity with production yield.  Semiconductor manufacturing (which is what solar panels basically are) can be tricky business and the product can have flaws that make it useless.  So it doesn't matter how many wafers you are capable of processing if a large percentage of them turn out to be defective which is what seems like happened in this case.  They apparently had a lot of waste product.

They should have had semiconductor experts from other manufacturers in the area (it's called "silicon valley" for a reason) have a look at the operation.  My guess is they were using conventional manufacturing models and not models specifically aimed at semiconductor manufacturing.  Heck, it is not unheard of to have an entire day's production thrown out due to contamination.  It doesn't happen often, but it happens.  That is why they have these huge clean rooms and bunny suits.  One sneeze and there goes the day's product.

The Left knows Obama is political toast and has a big ego. To clear the field for another perhaps they will want him to undergo the beginnings of impeachment so he will have to resign. Then Hillary can step in  for the presidency.

Maybe at some point these hearings and floggings will drill down into the cause of the failure. I would like to know if the tech was good but the biz was bad, or what? Did they fail because the tech is bad, phony, outdated by the Chinese versions, or what? Or, was the tech really good but the biz guys really bad at their jobs? Who will get this tech in the bankruptcy proceedings, I mean the patents and that kind of thing? I hope they didn't owe money to some company in China if those patents are worth gloaming onto.
