— Open Blogger Controlling 1/2 of 1/3 of gov't = Republican control.
UDATED! Now with 100% more MEME. (After the break.)
Doesn't this admission of impotence sort of validate the presumption that the only way for the Left to wield power with any effectiveness is if they are permitted absolute power, unfettered by the specter of being held responsible for failed programs in the next election?
“Democrats aren’t in charge. The House is obviously run by Republicans, and in the Senate, we have 53 Democrats but the system now is set up so that you need 60 votes to do anything,” Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) said in a C-SPAN “Newsmakers” interview that aired Sunday.
Be nice if someone had a job whose responsibilities included asking follow-up questions. I don't know, that person could be called a 'journalist', and they could ask things like "So when you had control of the Executive & the Legislative, why didn't you go ahead and pass a jobs bill that worked or, hell, even something as fundamental and constitutionally mandated like a budget, instead of spending your political capital on an unpopular health care bill?"
But then, doing so would allow the average reader to grok the hypocrisy in the following statement:
Over 240 days and this Republican Congress has not put forth one jobs plan,” Belcher told CNN anchor Anderson Cooper last month. Democratic operatives defend Belcher’s choice of words, even though Democrats control the Senate.
Of course we see the standard media tactic of providing editorial color to Republican statements. Republicans are "crowing" the success of their dastardly authority.
Democrats' statements are given with no adjectives.
And of course, the final word reinforces the meme. (Although I think they miss the unintentional irony in the statement, which I've emphasized.)
“The facts are that it’s a Republican Congress,” he said.“There is no disputing the fact that congressional Republicans have repeatedly blocked the bipartisan, paid-for ideas offered up by the president in the American Jobs Act — even though it’s the only plan before Congress that independent analysts confirm would create jobs right away,” said Josh Earnest, a White House spokesman.
Thanks to Ben K, and via Newsbusters, Bill Press states Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell "controls" congress:
"Meme meme meme meme?"
Yes you, Beaker.

I recall in 2008 that most people interviewed after voting thought the Republicans controlled the house and senate as well as the Presidency.
The Democrats and media(i know, i know) are very good at this kind of thing.

1/2 of 1/3 is bogus logic.
If you are only going to give Republicans credit for 1/2 the House, even though they have a majority, then you have to be consistent with how much credit you give the Democrats who have a majority in the Senate.
Shouldn't the Democrats also only be given a score of 1/2 for the Senate?
Truth is, Republicans have the House and the Democrats have the Senate and the Presidency.
Drop this 1/2 of 1/3 nonsense.
(now if in your "3" you are counting Judicial, Legislative and Executive, instead of House, Senate and Presidency, then i don't see how that works either. because 1/2 of the bench is conservative so we would get 1/2 for Judicial and 1/2 for House. which would still be 2/6th or 1/3rd of gov.)

Not only is it not feasible for the UE rate to go down, it is already defying reason that it hasn't gone above 9.1% for the last six months.
The numbers tell us it can't happen. Everyone agrees that 375K is the threshold.

Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Hobbit, in a REALLY BAD MOOD at October 27, 2011 10:40 AM (4df7R)
The math works like this:
3 Branches: Executive, Legislative, Judiciary.
Executive - Democrat
Judiciary - Neither (theoretically, but the Conservative Justices tend to play by the rules, so if it isn't 'Neither' then its 'Democrat')
Legislative - two Parts:
House - Republican
Senate - Democrat
Therefore 1/2 of 1/3. That's why no one is saying "1/6."

No. It is being tallied.
You have 6 m&ms. 3 are blue. 1 is red. 2 are neither red nor blue. What proportion of m&ms is red?
The Judiciary is tallied in that it is 1/3 of government. It doesn't factor into either side's "control" because neither side controls it (in theory).
Even if it didn't, then it's Exec v Leg, so we control 1/2 of 1/2 of the government. Or 1/4, if we want to do it that way.

It IS being tallied. It's being tallied as neutral, like a tie game in football, though it leans Democrat because the Dems don't give a flying fuck about abiding by rules and statutes. For example, the Dems are demanding Clarence Thomas not sit for any decisions on Obamacare, but they have no problem with Obama's former Solicitor General Kagan, who argued FOR Obamacare, being in on the decision. No conflict of interest there. None at all.
Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Hobbit, in a REALLY BAD MOOD at October 27, 2011 10:47 AM (4df7R)

It doesn't "count towards control." It does, however, count as part of the government. Like I said, that's why we're not saying that Republicans control 1/6 of government. We're saying that of 1/3 of government (the Legislature), Republicans control 1/2 of that (the House). Therefore: 1/2 of 1/3.

Well, it would help to start treating the MFM as the adversaries they are. As Rush says (and as Newt has been doing): reject the premise. Point out the bias in the media's questions, and explain that the question up for debate is the very premise they're assuming.
Do that enough, and people will start seeing that the media is biased. What's great about it is that you never have to accuse them of it. You never have to say, "that's biased," or "you're getting your talking points from the DNC." You just say something reasonable like, "I'm sorry, [Journo-puke], but your very question rests on the issue up for debate. We don't know that Obama's jobs bill will create jobs- that's an assertion by the Democrats. We're saying it will not create jobs, indeed, that it is harmful to them. So to ask me 'but if this bill will create 1 million jobs...' is like asking me, 'but if the sky is green...'"

The only talk radio we get here in flyover land is NPR, and I listened yesterday as the dulcet-voiced lady discussed something, anything, with some D pol. She asked him a pretty good question, and then he went on to "answer," but simply launched into his talking points, all straight from DNC central, about how the Rethuglicans control everything and want to slash and burn.
She let him go on for about two long minutes, and then thanked him for his effort. No followup, of course. No butting in to insist that he actually address any part, any teensie part, of the question. Nothing but giving him his airtime to advance the meme.
And advance it she will, she of the NPR golden tones, by sandwiching his little speech with what the mindless dummies think of a calm and reasonable discussion.
This is how they roll, and no one, no one, is calling out any of them.
Why the fuck can't all Republicans, all of them, everywhere, learn from this and start speaking from the same playbook, start refusing to answer the questions, and use the airtime to get out the message. Why can't they?
Punching bags, all of them. And the MFM just smirks behind their backs, and gets on with their program.

OT.... but I had my contractors continuing ed this week and we covered the new 2012 IRC and IBC rules on energy efficiency.
OMFG. New rules for exterior walls are R20 and ceilings in now R40...... plus tons and tons and tons of other bullshit testing.
You cannot get R20 on a 2x4 wall and I have no idea how to do R40 on anything but a flat roof.
You might be able to accomodate the new regs on new construction using 2x6 exterior walls and raising the space in the attic on slope roofs....
... but how the hell is a remodeler supposed to comply with this stuff. Nobody will be to afford to undertake a remodel.

So we are at the mercy of how Anthony Kennedy's bowels are acting any particular day?

Which is really funny, because he opposes it. I believe his response was something like, "Fair or not, it re-opens old wounds, and there's no reason to do that."

I think you'd be amazed at what the last two "educated" generations of Americans don't know about government, let alone congress.

Rick Perry invented the Confederate flag.
It was later that Rick Perry came up with the idea of slavery and decided to link the two.

Well, yes. But that's not new.

The highway bill expired in 2009. Obama and the democrats did nothing to pass a new one in 2009 or 2010.

Why does Rick Perry want to open old wounds?
Because Rick Perry made the original wounds, but he screwed up.
Rick Perry was the original slash-and-burn Republican. With a machete in one hand and a blow torch in the other, Rick Perry went about looking for people (mostly children, but a few old people, too) to wound. He would slash with one hand and burn with the other. It wasn't until it was too late that he realized that the torch was actually cauterizing the lacerations.
This is why he wants to bring back the Confederate flag -- and with it, of course, slavery. But it won't be the slavery that the great Democrat Abraham Lincoln abolished in Gettysburg. This time, the slaves will be sex slaves. All of us! And we will serve giant ants -- sexually! I don't knkow how that will work exactly, but I don't want to find out.

Two inches of closed cell foam will provide R12 – R14 of insulation. Three inches will get you over R20, more than sufficient for exterior walls even the coldest climates in the United States.
It certainly looks that way doesn't it.

Even that in a 2x4 wall only gets you to about R18.

That's just what my liberal Dad said when Obama was first elected: "He'll never be able to accomplish anything anyway; the Republicans and corporations are gonna fight him tooth and nail to keep him from doing anything to help this country." /sigh... Dear old Dad.

I thought all was already lost regarding remodeling, because EPA has decided that any opening in a wall greater than (?some typical window size?) in a pre-1978 home exposes lead paint and/ or asbestos, so you have to do the "full-protective-coverage and filtered ventilation of a hazmat site" when replacing windows, enlarging rooms, etc. Making, of course, an expensive renovation into an IMPOSSIBLY-expensive renovation.
Posted by: A_Nonny_Mouse at October 27, 2011 11:23 AM (hq0VE)
Since it says in the quote I linked that a specific type meets the R20 in three inches that probably means they are also pushing a specific manufacturer too.
It may not be true but if the paperwork says it meets it that is all the gov will care about. Paper is more important that proof to them.

Ok, so when it was voted on the Senate, how did that go down?
Bi-partisan? Democrats only voted for it.
Partisan evil nasty one-sided politics? Republicans, Democrats, and Independents voted against it...
Damn, can I get a White House approved NEWSPEAK dictionary that has "bipartisan" defined as "Democrats only"? Clearly my current dictionary is defective or obsolete or something.

Obama and his slithering zealots keep saying this, but I have yet to hear a single name of one of these "independent analysts/economists" that is "confirming" such obvious skittle. Other than the evil Ewok, Paul Krugman, is there anyone touting this stuff with even the slightest credentials?
