Afternoon Open Thread [Truman North]
— Open Blogger

H.L. Mencken quipped that the New Deal divided America into "those who work for a living and those who vote for a living."

The TSA has divided America into "those who grope for a living and those who are groped for living."

Especially germane: Ace's classic, "The New Feudalism".

Can I just say this about Bachmann and Wallace?  Wallace should never have asked her such a question.

Let me lend some perspective:

"Mr. Wallace, many of your detractors from the unhinged anti-Fox wing of the loony bin have stated repeatedly that you are a pedophile.  Well, Chris?  Are you indeed a pedophile?"

Would this at any time be an appropriate question to ask?  Yet, it has the same tone, the same meaning, and the same resonance as the one he asked her.  Taking the smears of someone's opponents and couching them in the context of a serious news interview-- that's something you would expect the Nutroots to do to Breitbart.

I think Bachmann's non-acceptance of the apology sets the tone for her as nobody's media punching bag.  There is nothing wrong with demanding respect the first time rather than allowing the venomous leftist MFM to get in a free shot before kissing and making up.

Yes.  Our boy had been at boot camp one week.  He was allowed to speak with my husband for a few minutes, and couldn't attend the funeral.

My mom had been sick with heart problems her whole life, but her death was due to a choking accident and totally unexpected.

I had kind of a delayed grief months later.  Still can't deal with it.

All I can say is this. They are indeed in a better place. The night she died I asked her for a sign that she was ok. She gave me one. She somehow took away a nagging pinched nerve ailment thats been screwing with me for 5 months. I have been pain free for 3 days in a way I haven't felt in months. Not sure what she did or how, but she sent the signal....no pain.

52 Jane, I can relate.  I still can't deal with it either, even though you are forced to.  Not one single day goes by without my mind on her.  I haven't been the same since.

As for your mom's passing...the exact same thing happened to my beloved grandmother.  She had health problems at age 86, but was still pulling her own.  Then one morning at the breakfast table, she choked on her breakfast.  Oxygen loss put her into a coma, then onto life support and then gone.

57 This is my favorite Mom Poem This is for all the mothers who froze their buns off on metal bleachers at soccer games instead of watching from cars, so that when their kids asked, "Did you see my goal?" They could say, "Of course, I wouldn't have missed it for the world," and mean it. This is for all the mothers who have sat up all night with sick children in their arms, wiping up barf laced with Oscar Meyer wieners and cherry Kool-Aid saying, "It's OK honey, Mommy's here." This is for all the mothers of Kosovo who fled in the night and can't find their children. This is for the mothers who gave birth to babies they'll never see and for the mothers who took those babies and gave them homes. For all the mothers who run carpools and make cookies and sew Halloween costumes and for all the mothers who don't. What makes a good mother anyway? Is it patience? Compassion? Broad hips? The ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a shirt, all at the same time? Or is it heart? Is it the ache you feel when you watch your son or daughter disappear down the street, walking to school alone for the very first time? The jolt that takes you from sleeping to dread, from bed to crib at 2 a.m. to put your hand on the back of a sleeping baby? Is it the need to flee from wherever you are and hug your child when you hear news of a school shooting, a fire, a car accident, a baby dying? I think so. So this is for all the mothers who sat down with their children and explained all about making babies. And for all the mothers who wanted to but just couldn't. This is for reading "Goodnight, Moon" twice a night for a year. And then reading it again, "Just one more time". This is for all the mothers who mess up. Who yell at their kids in grocery store and swat them in despair and stomp their feet like a tired two year old who wants ice cream before dinner. This is for all the mothers who taught their children to tie their shoelaces before they started to school and for all the mothers who opted for Velcro instead. For all the mothers who bite their lips (sometimes until they bleed) when their 14 year olds dyed their hair green. This is for all the mothers who lock themselves in the bathroom when babies keep crying and won't stop. This is for all mothers who show at work with spit-up in their hair and milkstains on their blouses and diapers in their purse. This is for mothers who teach their sons to cook and their daughters to sink a jump shot. This is for all mothers whose heads turn automatically when a little voice calls "Mom?" in a crowd, even though they know their own offspring are at home or are grown. This is for mothers who put pinwheels and teddy bears on their children's graves. This is for all the mothers whose children have gone astray and who can't find words to reach them. This is for all the mothers who sent their child to school with a stomach ache, assuring that they would be just FINE once they got there, only to get a call from the school nurse an hour later asking them to please pick them up right away. This is for young mothers stumbling through diaper changes and sleep deprivation. And mature mothers learning to let go. For working moms and stay-at-home moms. Single mothers and married mothers. Mothers with money and mothers without. This is for you, so hang in there. The world would be a terrible place without the love of mothers everywhere. You make it a more civil, caring and safe place for the precious children in our world.

So I notice the hot women and the items on my brain list of things I need and ignore everything else.

I hate shopping at all stores that don't have good tools or guns so Walmart is not as painful as many other stores are.

98 LIBYA

The first person to issue an arrest warrant for Osama Bin Laden was Muammar Qaddafi. The International Criminal Court never indicted or ordered the arrest of Bin Laden, because he had been on the payroll of the CIA and MI-6 into at least the mid-1990s. If Qaddafi ever goes on trial, one document: this Libyan INTERPOL RED NOTICE for the arrest of Bin Laden, will be an embarrassment for NATO, the ICC, and the United States.
Wayne Madsen

NATO "Intern'l Judges Order Arrest Of Moammar Gadhafi" who consistently has denied having sponsored or having complicity in international terrorism.

Also, Webster Tarpley conversed with Libyans in exodus, relaying their unanimous report that the al-Qaeda/US "revolutionaries" are targeting their homes in bombing residential neighborhoods regularly between 2-4 a.m. The emigrants are not running from Gaddafi, but are escaping the US/al-Qaeda fundamentalist war against Libya.

WASHINGTON — Alarmed by a shortage of primary care doctors, Obama administration officials are recruiting a team of “mystery shoppers” to pose as patients, call doctors’ offices and request appointments to see how difficult it is for people to get care when they need it. ...

WARNING!  Link is to the NY Times.

I agree with the majority here. This is one of the rare instances where I disagree with Thomas.

He makes a valiant attempt to walk the first amendment back to "as originally written" without all of the creep we have had over the years. I feel for him there and somewhat agree with it, but that is now litterally impossible to do because it would kill just about ALL of the current first amendment protections on speech to get this video game thing.

Good recovery, Buzz.  If I was single, though, wallyworld wouldn't be my hunting grounds.  It'd depend on what I was after:

easy chicks:  whole foods.  hands down. hottie tramp-o-rama.

hot chicks you might wanna bring home to mom:  golf course bars or high end restaurant waitresses.  Most of those girls are working their ass off but are focused on a career.  They have the sense to know that everything won't be handed to them, hence the job.

They tried that schtick with Richard Mellon-Scaife, only to be met by shrugs of "who?"

The Koch Brothers are double evil. Not only do they give money to right leaning causes, they made thier fortune in a business called Koch Petroleum.

Killing America, and the world.

158 "Okay. Off to Wal-Mart. Gag. Will report any interesting "sightings." Posted by: Jane D'oh" Use your cell phone camera. You could make a "Women of Walmart" calendar. Hey, after seeing that photo of The Wicked Witch of the Left, oops, I mean the Joo hater Helen Thomas, I can stomach anything.

What's with the feet up on the furniture all the time? Reagan would have canned anyone who did that, and Bush had enough respect for the office.

Shows lack of respect for the office itself, or "it's MY furniture, I'll put my fuckin' feet wherever I want!"

And just to top the week off, my wife just called to say that she's been laid off. I'll be curled up under my desk now.

Okay, hit your hand with a hammer or something to get the third thing out of the way.

164 Jon, Beserker, my deepest condolance. Indeed it takes foever to heal from the hole in your heart when a parent dies, I comfort myself that they were called home to the place beyond the reach of pain or sadness. They watch over us untill the promised day when we join them. I feel my foster father with me still. They will be with you. I pray God brings you comfort.

165 The irony about the left's hatred of the Koch Brothers is that they are pro-choice, for decriminalizing drugs, pro gay-marriage, anti patriot act and for cutting defense spending.  Yes, insane right wingers those Kochs.

Went there in April. Very sad to see the country degenerate from the spirit of adventure to the spirit of gimme. It was an awesome achievement to go to the moon. Now, it's an empty shell.

Twenty years ago I lived in Satellite Beach, FL about a 10 minute drive from the KSC.  At that time you could take a bus out to look at the old Titan pads where the Gemini missions launched.  They had been mostly torn down except for the main structural bases that stood like wide fat barstools sticking up in the scrub oaks.  On the inside of each base, in letters about five feet high, were painted  the words "ABANDON IN PLACE".

I think that's a fitting epitaph for NASA.

I'm so sorry.  Prayers for your mom, you, and your family.

173 That statement would never have been said about any democrat.  male politician with the exception of Dennis Kucinich.

You see, never vote based upon gender or upon race; but vote on the Constitution.

After a discussion with Ace about how the Republican Party establishment apologists disproportionately attribute "flake" to females, while ignoring the flakiness of male gaffs, I recall not-traditional-conservative women being supported by Republican leadership.

Remember the liberal appointee whom Reagan gifted to his political opponents, Sandra Day O'Connor; and the neoconservative single Ivy League academic Condi Rice who wasn't even Bush's first choice. GWB tried to get a flake into the SCOTUS, and appointed a flake to be Attorney General.

When McCain put Palin on his '08 campaign, the leadership along with most wannabe big shots in the GOP never approved. And when Michele Bachmann established the first congressional Tea Party Caucus (House), again, the Republican male leadership poo-pooed the entire concept of linking their uber elitist dignity with the crass conservative grass roots American voters who really ought to STFU and do as their told by their "betters" who eschew the Tea Party movement.

Remember Ruth McClung. It isn't that intelligent professional conservative Republican women do not run for office, or serve in Congress. But it isn't as if highly skilled, successful conservative women are promoted into the party leadership unless they've sold out like Kay Bailey Hutchison.

There's nothing new to the glass ceiling fact of life. But when claiming that the Republican Party established leaders actually support conservative women politically, where's the proof?  It seems another case of "give us your vote" because who are you going to trust, us "big guns" or your lying eyes?

You fail to acknowledge the source who served in those administrations, and established the CIA anti-terrorism program.

Intelligence comes from its own community network, and attending members witnessed our own meetings; and those who coordinated with former Joint Chiefs have their own testimony regarding where funding is allocated.

You remind me of the Cowboy who egged on a fight, shouting at his cheating friend to kill the Swede, and when the death happens, asks, "What did I do wrong?" -- Stephen Crane's "The Blue Hotel."

Sheesh

This is why I have begun asking for links. Christie may well be a social liberal but untested allegations are BS.
