American Federation of Teachers Caught Screwing Over Parents In Connecticut
— Ace

The AFT poses as more concerned about parents' desire for more control over the schools than does the Connecticut Education Association, which is more unabashedly teachers first, teachers last, teachers always.

The AFT pretended to be conciliatory with concerned parents on a "trigger" law, which would create power for parents to mandate changes in a school should it be failing for several years in a row.

But lobbyists for the AFT were actually working hard to kill the bill by making it so watered-down and weak as to not function at all in the way the parents intended.

And one lobbyist who was successful in undermining the law bragged about it on his website.

Parents are outraged over news that a lobbyist for the American Federation of Teachers bragged about watering down an education-reform bill at the AFTÂ’s national conference last month.

...

At the AFT’s national conference last month, a lobbyist for the union described the state chapter’s successful efforts to weaken the legislation in a presentation entitled, “How Connecticut Diffused [sic] the Parent Trigger.” In it, the lobbyist recounted how the AFT initially tried to “kill the bill” but later decided to “engage the opposition” to mitigate its effect.

In the slides, the lobbyist noted that the AFT dragged the Connecticut Education Association “kicking and screaming” into line and that “parent trigger advocates . . . were not at the table.”

Eventually, legislators settled on a measure that set up “school governance councils” on which parents would hold most of the seats but which had only “authority to recommend reconstitution in [the] third year of poor performance.”

Also among the slides, first reported by Dropout Nation, was the lobbyist’s reminder that “school governance council” “is a misnomer.” “They are advisory and do not have true governing authority,” the slide reassured its readers.

At some point people's eagerness to be deceived and ill-used is their own fault.

3 It's not only that our current educational system is failing many, many students.

It's not only that teaching actual knowledge is being replaced with teaching politically correct progressive crap liek global warming.

It's is also that these people who lie, cheat, steal, and vandalize simply do not have the character to be allowed anywhere near children.

About a month ago I was talking with a local university's physics teacher and asked him what he thought about the quality of students graduating from public high schools.  After stating that he thought the very smart ones continued to be very good, he admitted that there's a disturbing inability to think in a way that combines differing concepts to solve problems.  The students are good at regurgitating things that are told to them but, in effect, they're unable to think.  I think this, and the inability or unwillingness for it to be addressed, is a bigger threat to the future of the country than El JEFe.

46 Seems like you can educate 1000 students with 40 teachers, 8000 books, a big building, and maybe 3 administrators and 10 staff.

Pay each employee $50k per year average and spend .5 million per year on the building and the books.  That's $3150 per student per year.

If the teacher sucks, fire them.  For $50k you can find a hard working teacher.  If the student doesn't learn what they are supposed to, flunk them.

In Chicago, they spend $8000k per student.  A lot of that goes to administration nonsense.  I googled it and they say Connecticut spends $15,000 per student, but I find that hard to accept.

Regardless, the problem with education is we're spending too much money, and have a bunch of horseshit instead of serious education.

One of the many problems of modern public education is they try to teach students how to be "good people."  Forget that.  Teach your students how to read, write, and do math.  Then add electives, like music, theater and art, to give them a little more of a rounded education.  But quit trying to teach "morals" and "values."  That's for parents to do.  Sure, a lot of parents are bone stupid and will have equally bone stupid, immature, uncouth children, but society can deal with that.  What we CAN'T deal with is publically-funded indoctrination institutions.

Posted by: MWR, proud Tea Party Hobbit at August 08, 2011 03:50 PM (4df7R)

Being involved in the schools is just a fucking dodge because the union humps will steamroller you.  My wife was the head of the local elementary school's PTA when the very good principal announced she was leaving for another system and the two replacements they presented as possibilities were both fucking terrible.  None of the above wasn't an option so they got stuck with Door #2 and the school subsequently declined badly.  I yanked one of my daughters to a local private school; verrrrrry expensive but I could juggle finances to pay for it.  Even if I couldn't I'd have found a way to finance it because it's an excellent investment in your child's future; even better than college imo (she got into Columbia which was a big waste of money imo and probably her opinion too).  The other daughter stayed in the public school because I didn't want to force her to do something she didn't want to do (which my parents kind of did to me and, as you can surmise with somebody with a nic like mine, old grudges die hard) and she had a few good teachers; specifically in chemistry and calculus.  But the other teachers were fucking pathetic, especially the ones teaching grammar, and my wife and I screamed at them every goddamned parent teacher conference that she didn't know how to construct a simple sentence and those fuckheads told me she was one of the best students.  Finally when she got to college (don't get me started on what the graduation ceremony was like) she called up outraged one day that her freshman English teacher wanted her to go see a tutor.  Mrs H and I both got on the phone and ordered her to follow that advice.  After a few short sessions, the tutor was able to get what those useless cocksuckers couldn't do in years; namely get her to write lucid and grammatically correct sentences.

Spend a day with me and you'll be hep to the jive before you can chew through your restraints.

A "whippit"  basically looks like a Co2 cannister (the kind used in pellet guns) filled with Nitrous Oxide. These are used in cooking tools used to fluff heavy cream instantly into whipped cream. Huffing a whippit amounts to abusing Nitrous Oxide....commonly seen at all the old Grateful Dead and Phish concerts.

Straight nitrous without oxygen suppliments, will leave you feeling GREAT even as you get brain dammage from lack of oxygen. It's a lot like having Alzheimers. If you ever get it, you won't remember why you didn't want it.

89 So parents are the opposition?  Which makes students the battlefield right?

There's a school board election going on right now in Seattle, or maybe it's a primary.  I still haven't excavated my ballot from my desk so I'm a little vague on the details.  But given the varieties of corruption uncovered in the last year, we might actually see some turnover.

What makes me sick is hearing idiot candidates talk about being in a partnership with the Washington Education Association.  The biggest problem with all school management is the belief that they can be "in partnership" with a labor union.  The school board is management; the union is labor.  There is no freaking partnership and, legally, I don't think there can be.

And to any parent who thinks a teachers' union cares about their kids, just wait for the next pedophile teacher to pop up.  The union will defend the teacher and throw your kid to the wolves.

Yet somehow, the parents never seem to learn.

91 I't called living in a deep blue state. And while sometimes it's amusing to watch the idiots, most often it's just painful.

92 Yes, Stephen, it is painful, but one of my hobbies is adding comments to Jim McDermott's Facebook page.  It's a lot like poking  a hornet's nest with a stick.  They froth, they fume, they sneer, they yell.  They invariably accuse me of parroting the Heritage Foundation, which is funny because I hardly ever go there.

94 Schools don't fail. Some teachers fail to teach and many students fail to learn. While I think teacher unions are an aberration, unrealistic expectations for Little Johnny Xbox has to be factored into the equation here. It really is that complicated. I have had numerous discussions from a very conservative inner city school teacher. No one, not the teacher unions, not the top heavy and basically useless administrations, the parents who always side with their brats and the spoiled brats themselves (on the whole...there is a such thing as an IQ bell curve) wants to be held accountable.

A.      I enjoyed your entries on Toxic Words - such great thoughts and a wonderful reminder to watch the words I use - to be positive and kind and use words to build up rather than tear down.
