— DrewM Above the post update:
Bachmann received 4823 votes (28.55%)
Ron Paul got robbed! He finished 2nd with 4,671 (27.65%)
Tim Pawlenty 3rd with 2,293 (he's done)
Rick Santorum 4th
Herman Cain 5th
Rick Perry got 718 write-ins, more than Romney got. Hmmmm.
Apparently not receiving a lot of write-in votes: Sarah Palin.
Clearly the ticket will be Bachmann/Paul.
Original Post:
First let me say what a scam this is. It's simply a fundraising gig for the Iowa GOP. Candidates have to pay to get space and voters have to buy tickets to vote.
Also...Get over yourself Iowa. Someone has to go first and I guess you can make a case for Iowa. What drives me nuts is people who act as if Iowa going first was ordained in the Book of Genesis or something. Some Iowans seem to think living in Iowa makes them more serious about this process and that they have some preternatural ability to screen candidates.
Results should start coming in around 6 eastern. Now FNC is saying 6:45 or so. Maybe when I saw 6 is was central time.
The conventional wisdom is Pawlenty needs to come in 3rd or better with the assumption being Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann will be 1-2. Honestly, with Perry getting in today, I don't see how coming in anywhere behind Bachmann helps T-Paw. He's still in the back of the pack nationally, so, "I'm Number 3!" in Iowa (when Mitt isn't really competing and Perry just jumped in) changes that. There's just not a lot of rationale to his campaign at that point. He's also going to have trouble fundraising without some sort of jump here. This might be the beginning of the end for him.
Also baring a miracle, Rick Santorum probably fades away after this.
Herman Cain gave a great speech to a mostly empty hall after many people already voted. At some point soon he's got to figure this isn't happening and has better things to do with his time.
No matter how he finishes, Newt probably stays in since he's digging the attention.
Huntsman really is focusing on New Hampshire for what that's worth so today doesn't mean much to him.
The other interesting thing to watch will be the write-in vote. It's the first time they've had them so expect Perry and Palin to get some play.
Of course, all of this might change depending on the outcome. We'll see.

But we aren't the ones putting all the focus and attention on it. You douche bags are. As far as I am concerned you can have it. Save me the 40+ robo phone calls every Iowa Republican probably got this week petitioning them to come out, almost 2 years before an election, in support of candidates most people haven't heard of much less care about.
You pundit types make a big deal out of it, so the candidates have to, since the next election is all you ever want to talk about.
Iowa is a beautiful place, but national politics NEVER ENDS HERE. As soon as one election ends, they start right in with TV ads, radio, and personal appearances angling for the next. It sucks.

Every Tuesday for 17 weeks, three states hold primaries. The states go in order from least electoral votes to most. Obscure candidates have time to build name recognition while buying time in inexpensive media markets. By the time the biggest, most important states roll around, only candidates with a realistic shot at winning are still around.

Actually, I find many of his domestic policies to be very good. The only problem talks about them as though they are easy fixes, when they'd be damn near impossible to get through the house and senate.
There are such things as simple answers, but there are no easy answers.
Note, I think he's insane on foreign policy, but I wouldn't mind being back on the gold standard(or pegged to something of value), eliminating the department of education, and or auditing or abolishing the fed.

well, the justification that makes the most sense to me is to prevent hyperinflation.
making the political decision to turn on the printing presses is essentially a tax on all Americans that isn't subject to any vote in Congress. and it's a lot easier for a political appointee like Geithner (or Paulson for that matter) to do it than someone like teh Bernank, because Bernank's authority comes from the Federal Reserve Act itself and is much less susceptible to the ordinary political pressures to just follow the president's agenda.

The poll is a joke and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Ronulians buying it. The Democrats have to run their false flag campaigns to divert attention from the real candidates.
Bachman, Romney will remain. Newt will survive. But Cain, Pawlenty, Santorium will proably going over their books.
Huntsman is about as popular as a case of dengue fever.
But the Iowa straw poll did reveal Wallace is on a tight rope and is reputation is on the linbe. York comes across as someone hoping to be noticed by the Washington Post as its pet "conservative."
Perry's announcement makes no difference. As soon as voters realize he is an amnesty candidate qand is weak on abortion, stem cell research and is just another big spender he's toast. All the money will not buy them the Constitution when they have been silent while the GOP women have been in the front ranks fighting Obama.
So I doubt the results here have any import but the future isn't bright for the plastic men.

Could you please explain how you think she can win the general election? Because I will readily confess, I don't think she can win. She seems to be on the ideologue end of the political spectrum, and she has not had executive experience either. I don't know how that reassures a non-ideological voter that a vote for Bachmann would be a "safe" choice.
Posted by: chemjeff at August 13, 2011 02:52 PM (s7mIC)
I guess I'd agree with that assessment as well. But that's mostly because I think Palin is well and truly radioactive, and Bachmann merely less so. Both are certified losers.
Perry unites the streams. Looks like he's the one. Let's hope he doesn't have skeletons in his closet, and can sell himself to the Midwest....because that's where the race is going to be won/lost.

C4P is "unofficially official." It's nominally independent of Palin, but in reality they have deep lines of communication into Palin's team and are basically one of her semi-controlled propaganda arms. Pretty sure that Palin hired her #1 assistant (the deeply disturbing Rebecca Mansour) off of the site.

IMO, on the bright side, Bachmann winning this is proof that conservatism is starting to take hold. I don't think she can win the General, especially with Perry announcing today, but she does have a lot of things to contribute to the national conversation.
Now, I just hope SarahCuda doesn't decide to run. Y'all know I love her like a sister (and me being from Alabama, that really means something), but she's just too polarizing, thanks to the MFM. She's better off just playing the coy kingmaker and endorsing Perry later in the race.
Again, IMO. This shit is real. A. Dick has to be deposed as soon as possible for the sake of the nation.

At this point going into SC and Florida we will be left with Romney, Perry, Bachmann, and Paul, with Romney and Perry the frontrunners. Paul won't drop out because his cultish followers will continue funding him. This leaves Bachmann, who I believe could be the spoiler. The issue will be who does she harm more, Romney or Perry, and what influence she will want to have on the race. This will go at the very least until Super Tuesday and possible later.
One very positive impact that I think Perry will have on this race is that it will force Romney to actually work for this instead of simply being ordained as the candidate.

According to Rasmussen he certainly could. The head of one of the Tea Party groups said that if they ran a squish they would run a 3rd Party candidate and Rasmussen said 18% of the normal Republican voters would go with the Tea Party candidate.
It will not be Palin though as she is a Party regular and will support the party.
So all you Romneybots better keep that in mind. He truly is the unelectable candidate. Not only will he lose all the Southern red States but he will cause a 3rd party run as well.

He won't win SC as Perry is almost certainly a shoo-in. It's possible Romney could finish 3rd depending on how strong Bachmann appears to be at that point.
My guess is Romney will skip SC just like he did last time and head straight for Florida.

He is pretty much skipping SC as well. He will win in NH and then it is on to FL. Its the Rudy strategy that worked so well in 2008.

In many ways the Ames poll is not an honest one.
1)You can bus in supporters.
2)Delegates can give away voting authorization cards.
3)Delegate supporters (the voters) can lie and steel.
And that leads me to believe that Ames is a clever measure of a combination of political drivers. Money, strategy, level of genuine support, ability to get out the vote (at different levels of financial commitment) and probably some factors I haven't thought of.
It has its uses as a measure of factors that relate to campaign abilities as opposed factors that relate to the rationality of any given policy position.

Chemjeff, Perry just blew a big hole in everybody else's campaign today.
Romney just became an also ran. He's in danger, brought on by himself and his MassCare bill. The GOP establishment thought it was "his turn," alá Juan McLame. No such shit of that kind will be tolerated this time around.
They are becoming increasingly irrelevant thanks to the Tea Party, who will soon control the Republican party through a hostile takeover at the local level. People are bypassing them and sending money directly to their candidate, which I think is a wonderful thing.

You're living in the past, amigo. Iowa got rid of all their state-owned liquor stores in the spring of 1987. I remember, because I was a freshman at Iowa State then, and we bought a whole carload of leftover wine when the store in West Ames got down to 70% off. It cost us about $200 and we stayed drunk for......OK, we drank it all in a week. But we were all borderline alkies at the time, so it WAS a sweet deal.
And to summarize Iowa's role in the process, let me say this: Iowa isn't about picking winners. It's about being the Republican Party's Nelson Muntz: We point at the losers and say HAAA HAAAAAAAA. If you don't at least compete in Iowa, you lose the nomination.
Unless it's a weird year where a bunch of other douchebag states open their primaries to "independents" & Dems, then you get McCain as your nominee......and we all remember how THAT worked out.

Sarah Palin: “There is still a lot of contemplation that goes on within a family, deciding whether to engage in such a life-changing venture, putting yourself forward in the name of service, in such a position as President of the United States. So, we’re still thinking about it, and the impact on family. Family comes first in my life, and I just don’t want to adversely affect the family. So, we’re still talking about it, thinking about it. And that’s what I want supporters to understand. At the same time, I want to be very fair to supporters and not keep them hanging on in perpetuity. It’s fair to them to give them an answer here, in short order, so that they can jump on board with someone else. And/or to decide for themselves what they want to do. So, still haven’t made up my mind, haven’t decided when that announcement would be yet.”
David Brody: “Is that short order by the end of September? October?
Sarah Palin: “I think that that is a fair timeline for people, because Fall time, they can start getting engaged with different campaigns, but still thinking about it, and really, really desiring to be a participant in the positive change that needs to happen in this country. Economy getting back on the right track. Jobs created for Americans, I want to be a part of that whether it be as a candidate, or as a supporter of the right candidate. I’m still in that decision making phase.”

Our job isn't over once President Perry gets sworn in. We still have to hold his feet to the fire and make sure he doesn't do anything we don't want him to do.
This is why I'm not worried about his stance on immigration (if it's as bad as people make it out to be). We are the ones with the real power. Let's not forget that.
You are exactly right. That is what I keep trying to tell people. As long as the candidate isn't completely nuts on the issue, it doesn't matter too much what the candidate's views are, AS LONG AS we have a solid conservative Congress. That is why I just laugh when I see people bringing up things like T-Paw's one time support for cap-and-trade. Only Congress can approve such a thing and a conservative Congress isn't going to do it regardless of what T-Paw thinks.

I heard (a few threads ago, so it must be true) that Perry refused to endorse Huckafoo.
Yet another reason to vote Perry.

BTW - isn't that 2007 Conservative Blogger of the Year Award banner in the sidebar from CPAC, another pay to vote gig?

Strangely, that sounds appealing.

Why would we waste the best guy we have in the legislature to be in a useless executive position?

I didn't know Secretary of the Treasury was a useless position.
Posted by: jwb7605 at August 13, 2011 04:56 PM (Qxe/p)
I'd definitely support Ryan for OMB director. But he's too toxic at the moment (wish it wasn't so) and I could see him weighing-down Perry. Though that could (could) change if Perry is able to sell entitlement reform in a seemingly more personal way. But would Perry pick him even if that worked? Ryan also wants to be chairman of Ways & Means and he's about to start work on overhauling the budget system (including baseline budgeting), so he'll be occupied with that for some time.

You want your number two to be an asset to the ticket, I don't see Santorum doing that. Pawlenty on the other hand is would be a safe bet and really he would be a perfect VP. He could speak on policy without making an ass out of himself and let's face it, that would be as far as he could go politically.

Cool. Not certain I've seen one myself.
Back when I was 16 and doing the YCC thing at the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge, our work detail stumbled across an ailing Golden Eagle. One of the Utes on our crew (who also happened to be a yoot) nursed it back to health over the next few days. The rest of us couldn't help him because, being white folk, we're not allowed to touch them.

If you embiggen the pic, apparently he is. With a windowpane check shirt. Don't get me wrong, I am firmly in his corner, but there is something very used-car-salesman about the way he looks.

Lets say Romney is the nominee, there will be a concerted Democrat smear campaign on the weirdness of Mormonism. After this Obama will give a "historic and brilliant" speech calling for tolerance for all religious beliefs.
Take any Republican candidate and any perceived weakness.
Rinse and repeat.

McCotter wanted to make a speech covered on national TV and in the arena. He probably hoped for more last-minute votes, but he was followed by Cain, who was even better.
He's so darned likable.

That's not entirely true IIRC. You can give it to other campaigns and save it for later campaigns and do some other things with it, but you can't just buy a house with it.
Posted by: AmishDude at August 13, 2011 06:43 PM (73tyQ)
Winning the Ames Straw Poll is a negative indicator of your chances of winning the nomination and/or general election. Only George W. Bush won Ames and the Presidency the same cycle. Besides him, only Dole won Ames and the nomination.
It's just barely better than even chances (56.25%) that the winner of Ames will win the Caucuses in a few months.
Congratulations to Romney and Perry for not wasting the money on what is nothing more than a fundraising gimmick for the Iowa GOP.

Just got back from the state fair there. A local tv station sponsors a "cast your kernel" vote, where you get one kernel of corn and you drop it into a jar representing the candidate of your choice. In first place was Obama, not suprisingly. However, the Republic votes, collectively, outnumbered Obama's by 2 to 1. This is, obviously, totally unscientific. But I do remember in 2004 and 2008 that the kernel counts roughly reflected the state of things. So this was good to see.

Jeff B comments:
They're such nasty little backbiting shits over there, aren't they?
Then he goes on to say:
I have to say, watching Palin fans and Bachmann fans attack one another is a bit like watching Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia go to war against each other...pretty tough to decide which side you want to win.
And again:
He hates Michele Bachmann and will spend millions of dollars and the next year slandering her.
If Pawlenty stays in the race solely for this purpose, he's doing a service to America, the conservative movement, and the Republican Party.
Monumental lack of self-awareness and an ego the size of the great outdoors. Besides, how does this advance any political debate?
Must keep to my usual practice of scolling past any of his comments.
