An Unexpected Backbone
— Geoff

Remembering back to all their previous encounters, where President Obama displayed all the spine of a Democratic planarian, I really haven't expected much from him on the foreign policy front. In particular, I imagined that he'd continue to be pushed around by the Chinese, who have been using North Korea as a distraction from their own activities. This President has always valued his verbiage too highly, and his confidence in using it to achieve foreign policy goals has been completely misplaced.

So I must say that this was completely unexpected, and very, very welcome (if true):

Obamabows1.jpg
2009: Backbone check Fail!! Will 2011 be different?
The New York Times said Obama warned his Chinese counterpart that if Beijing did not step up pressure on North Korea, Washington would redeploy its forces in Asia to protect itself from a potential North Korean strike on U.S. soil.

Wow - the old iron fist in a velvet glove. I expected the velvet glove, but the iron fist? Quite a pleasant surprise.

The Chinese reaction so far has been exactly what you'd expect - vague threats to test our resolve:

Wang Dong of Peking University's School of International Studies said Washington's reported warning to Beijing was a slap in the face for the Chinese leader, who has urged the two Koreas to resolve their differences through dialogue.

"Playing tough like this, it might just backfire, I'm afraid," Wang said. "If this article represents the real thinking by American leaders, the danger of war on the peninsula can never be dismissed."

Exactly, friend Wang: walk a little more softly, because the danger of war can never be dismissed.

First? If so, that's a first for me, I'm usually way late.

Anyway, I'm going to take the high road here and give credit when the opposition does something that seems right.

I remember just before he left office, W told some of his friends that when the new President got a serious look at the reality of the international situation, he would be forced to adopt many of the policies that had been put in place during the Bush years.

Some of it may be political, but there is some hope that Obama may, just may be "growing" in office a bit, at least with respect to international politics, what he can realistically hope to accomplish, etc.

27 Obviously not Mr. Obama's intention, as he has no spine. Most likely, on the military brass suggested he bring this up, in this manner, and had O convinced that it would result in more "dialog". O, being an obviously superior intellect (/sarc), bought this, hook line and sinker. He delivered the payload, and the message was received and correctly understood by the Chinese. Even if the deliverer didn't comprehend he was merely a messenger. Thats my operational theory, as O so completely mucks up anything else he touches. Someone must have managed this and managed him.

Posted by: Follower of Cthulhu at January 21, 2011 04:38 AM (F/4zf)

30 And we should believe what the New York Times reports why?

Yes,  I heard Obama say "I told Hu,  I said that we..." at the press conference.  I also saw Hu tell us to mind our own business and IGNORE Obama while he spoke.

And I noted that Hu did not dress up for the State Dinner,  and he was 20 minutes late.

The NYT has belatedly realized that dining with a dictator doesn't look good,  so they are fabricating an imaginary tough stance which the Chinese will read and laugh at.

I did not fall off the turnip truck last night.

One thing I do know (and remember from the Carter years).  Obama can do all of this stuff and make speeches,  etc.  BUT if gas goes up to $5.00 and food prices continue to rise and jobs are still in the tank,  he will not get the votes from a large chunk of the electorate.

It will be like when I switched and voted for Reagan.  I remember thinking "Reagan cannot possibly do any worse and at least he won't be embarrassing."The misery index is on the rise,  and the New York Times and their allies cannot lower the price of hamburger, orange juice and bread.

Obama is trying on the guise of a tough-guy, for re-electability purposes obviously.  But in this case, he's only a sheep in wolf's clothing.

The danger with Obama's new approach is that he may misjudge a foreign-policy situation and cause it to spiral out of control.  The Cuban Missile crisis occurred (and WWIII almost initiated) because Khrushchev perceived JFK as weak and decided to up the ante by placing nukes in Cuba.

One of Sun Tzu's adages is that "when weak, appear strong".  However,  the Chi-Coms are great students of Sun Tzu and will see through this charade.

But it's still better than not doing anything right. Look, if the story is true, and if the President sticks to his guns (which he won't do w/o popular support, so get your pom poms in the air), then this was a great move. If he's all talk, then at least his talk has gotten tougher. No more "mutual interests" BS - let's get down to "pony up some regional stability or we'll do it for you."

I don't disagree that it's likely to be just more fluff, but that doesn't mean it isn't an improvement.

"The New York Times said Obama warned his Chinese counterpart that if Beijing did not step up pressure on North Korea, Washington would redeploy its forces in Asia to protect itself from a potential North Korean strike on U.S. soil."

Did the Norks come up with a much longer range missile than they've got?
In which case, hadn't he better restore funding to the ABM system he is in the process of dismantling?
And, BTW, thank you Bush for building the only ABM system this country ever had.

All this tough talk makes me wonder what kind of a concession he's compensating for.
If I were Taiwan, I'd be worried.

More like I feel that it's in our best interests to praise him when he seems to do well.

You were serious?  I thought this was a bit tongue-in-cheek ... I guess we say "snarky" these days.

It may be hopeless, but without some encouragement/approval from our side, he'll never improve.

Geoff, this is the way Westerners treat the arabs.  But the arabs never improve.  In fact, they move in the opposite direction.  You can't put Western thoughts and reactions into middle eastern personalities and it is just as errant to try and empathize with Hussein, whose interests, concerns, and way of thinking are nothing like normal Americans.  He has no American sensibilities, at all - not to mention no interest in helping the US (as has been made so clear).  If you praise him for doing nothing, he'll never improve.  He'll just get worse and worse.  I think we've seen enough examples of this that it shouldn't even be open to question.  Just look at his totally dishonest actions and words from Tuscon.  That wasn't too long ago to remember.

At least this way I can honestly say that I gave him every chance.

Exactly. US troops on the ground in Asia are no deterrent against a Nork missile attack on the US. In fact, having our troops there serves to give the Norks more leeway in launching a missile attack on the US (if they have the capability) since we can't just nuke the fuckers (or other equally effective direct means of introducing them to the nether regions) with lots of our troops in proximity.  Putting our troops on the ground, when the threat is long range missiles being launched from there, makes no sense at all ...

Sorry if you were offended, geoff.  That was not the point of my comment (though the tongue-in-cheek comment was meant to be a little funny).

It's all right. I don't do the "outrage du jour" and "Dems can do no right" type posts. I try to do original analysis (as in the unemployment stats) and pick stories that you're not likely to read 20 versions of in the Top 20 conservative blogs. And although I'm very partisan, I try to write objective posts. I've been a staunch Obama critic since the DNC convention 2004, but I'll always try to bend over backwards to be fair. It works out, because there's plenty left to criticize.

I've also been tracking China (economic & military stats) for over 4 years, and with the 2008 election results, I'd honestly given up hope that the US was going to do anything to even slow down their geopolitical ascendancy. This was a bright spot - completely out of the blue, and on the face of it, praiseworthy. It may be an NYT fabrication, or it may be empty words, but just imagining this President saying those words to Jintao Hu blows my mind. In a good way.

Meh.  So Prissypants finally listened to Coach Clinton, and is trying to save his act.  Yeah, it's just BS--posturing for political gain at home.  AS IF he'd defend this country rather than apologize for it.  Right.

I agree with Dr. Savage:  "Don't listen to what he (Obama) says, watch what he does."

Obie is a trainwreck.

the danger of war on the peninsula can never be dismissed.

If you'd pull the rug out from under the crazy bastard Norks, the danger would be greatly reduced.  Mix this with your very own Marshall plan towards them and in 50 years they may well look like the Sorks circa 1990.

Herein lies the difference between us and them.

174 Is the bloom off the rose for Christie? Last night, the stand-in host for Levin, some guy named TOm MArr, was going off on Christie, saying that the big man appointed a convicted Hamas supporter as a judge in NJ.

I think there's not information to say whether or not Christie was blowing Hu.  Lugar, sure, but Christie has the financial health of his state to think about.  I don't know what NJ's loan situation is like, but if China is holding some of them, it seems reasonable to be in the room.

176 We are begging the Chinese become a bigger presence to make us feel safer. ?! What would a pre-post-American President do? My guess: not that.

177 Looking at the president bowing is bad.  But look at the shadows on the wall behind him, it looks worse.

178 185 Is the bloom off the rose for Christie?

He's not running in 2012 anyway, so I plan to just let him do his thing in NJ and see how it shakes out.  I don't think it's appropriate to assess every statement and action he takes in the context of a POTUS bid since he is not running for POTUS... he's running New Jersey.

My dad, who is very conservative, loves him.  I think a lot of people are impressed by his no-nonsense approach to dealing with a blue legislature and unions over NJ's budget woes.

I think on issues that involve the law Christie's lawyer stripes come through, not always to his advantage.  He parses things like a lawyer and sometimes makes statements or decisions based on that outlook, making him seem to equivocate on things.  For example, when I read into the immigration statements (pertaining to the AZ law) from a while back my take on it was that he was narrowly focusing on the roles of the federal vs state governments, which made him seem weak on illegal immigration.  I think the proof is in the pudding on that issue.  I highly doubt a guy who is focused on fiscal issues to the extent Christie is would be nearly as bad/irresponsible on immigration as most of these crazy Democrats are.

South Korean commandos just wacked some Somalian pirates.

This year's video of Russian Spetznaz taking back a Russian cargo ship from Somali pirates is out there. And it's AWESOME. Old school war-on-the-high-seas justice.....they handcuffed the surviving pirates to their boat, then blasted the boat after sunset.

Pretty flames over a still sea.

Nothing has really changed. He is still a godsend of fiscal sanity for NJ. We knew his moderate views would make him problematic at best as a national republican candidate.

Two Points..

One, we are still technicly at WAR in the Koreas... its still just a cease fire.

Second.  Redeploy what?  The already cancelled Anti Ballistic Missle systems?

Oh... and a third point... notice that the only part of the US that NORK could hit, is Hawaii? and now Barry gets tough?

"The move to resume talks has required concessions from all sides. South Korea has had to swallow its reluctance to engage the North without an apology for its recent attacks. And the United States has had to abandon its resistance to resuming multiparty negotiations with North Korea, something Beijing has pushed and Washington has resisted as being a reward for the NorthÂ’s aggression."

So really, what have the NoKo's and Chinese given here?  NOTHING!

ObaMao's merely posturing tough while going along with his fellow travelers 5 year plan; with a propanda assist, natch, provided by the udeful idiots at the New York Times.

Not exactly. From Reuters: "Pyongyang bowed to Seoul's demands that talks specifically address that attack and the sinking of a South Korean warship last March, but made no mention of talks on denuclearization -- the central component of six-party meetings."

If it were me, I would have held out for an apology and reparations for the Cheonan sinking and Yeonpyeong shelling before even thinking about talking. But the South has seen this game many times before so they probably figured a promise to "address" the issues was the best they could get.
