And The Leading Candidate In CNN GOP Poll Is.....Rudy Giuliani?
— DrewM

2012- The Year of the RINO?

According to the poll, which was released Friday, 16 percent of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP say they would most likely support Rudy Giuliani as their party's nominee. One point behind, at 15 percent is Mitt Romney, with Sarah Palin coming in at 13 percent.

...

"Giuliani has the top spot in a 12-candidate field, but he doesn't generate a lot of enthusiasm. Only about a quarter of Republicans nationwide said that they would be enthusiastic if Giuliani won the nomination," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "But he's not alone - only a quarter would be enthusiastic if Palin got the party's nod, and only one in five would feel the same way if Romney became the GOP's standard bearer in 2012."

And if one NY RINO isn't enough for you, who is up for a George Pataki run?

Honestly, this poll is meaningless but it's Friday of Memorial Day weekend, so there you go.

11

Come on. A lot of us spend our days vetting and re-vetting possible candidates from the moment one election ends until the next one begins. I'd say about 70% of the Americans sampled in any given poll pay next to no attention to politics except during scandals, crises and the week of the general election. Giuliani is recognizable, likable and identified with as safe and experienced. I don't think Rudy would get more than 3-5% support in any poll of informed Repub. voters. It seems late in the season to us, but most people haven't even thought about 2012 candidates yet.

Posted by: Lincolntf at May 27, 2011 09:34 AM (Z05lF)

3. Republican (use their Obama plates to feed their dog): .5%
4. Conservative (voted for Ross Perot in 1992): .4%
5. The guy on the corner who gives us our NY Times: .1%

One of the few Republicans with strong appeal (so strong he was used profusely in House races in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, and New Hampshire). The REAL way to look at the electoral map is who puts the most BLUE seats in serious jeopardy. If Obama has to defend states like New Jersey, he is already losing Ohio, Michigan, Florida, Virginia, Colorado, North Carolina, Indiana and subsequently the Presidency. That said... Giuliani pissed me way, way the fuck off by not jumping into an EASY race in 2010. Him and Pataki could have tagteamed the Dim Dems running in the Senate, Gillibrand would be no more and even Schumer would probably have been up shits creek. It occurs to me that Bachmann, Cain, Palin, etc. better win this time around or they'll forever be rejected by the GOP base as "retreads who have already been rejected once...".

93 And this early, a poll of "Republicans and GOP-leaning independents" is probably polling in part just for long-term name recognition, not a final choice.

Posted by: Dave R. at May 27, 2011 01:40 PM (X/R05)

OK, folks, this is why we have IA/NH/SC primaries.

If we had "national primary day" or had early primaries in huge states, the only candidates that could break the ceiling would be those already nationally known. There would be one prize to win.  Trump would be a realistic nominee.

We haven't had the Ames Straw Poll yet.  That's August.

Then, there's the actual IA caucuses.

And you don't have to even win those, because NH is next.

Etc. etc.

94 This is a very interesting observation. How can we tell if Barry really has trouble in a place like NJ? Is it too early to say?

TRENTON — In a poll released today, New Jersey voters prefer President Barack Obama in the White House over their own Gov. Chris Christie.

A poll of 1,000 likelyNJ voters found Obama beating Christie 51 percent to 33.5 percent. The polled, performed by Stockton College and Zogby using live interviews, had a margin of error 3.2 percentage points

95 This is a very interesting observation. How can we tell if Barry really has trouble in a place like NJ? Is it too early to say? Posted by: George Orwell at May 27, 2011 01:56 PM (AZGON) Giuliani has always polled exceptionally well in the Garden State. Christie used him for his election campaign. I would venture to say that Giuliani could even scare Obama in the Empire State. He is one of that states most popular politicians, and even maintained his popularity post-office in New York City. Obama would still carry new york, but again, we need to play things like in 2010- don't go after the "easy" states and seats. Scare the Dems in the next batch. Democrats panicked in 2010 and actually abandoned dozens of races to defend the "next most blue" just to save face. Can you imagine what would happen if Obama lost a state like New Jersey, Maine, Oregon...or New York?

Posted by: CAC at May 27, 2011 10:02 AM (JEVge)

96 Since I've seen plenty of evidence that most morons will abandon anyone sufficiently savaged by the media, I'm obligated to say that Giuliani is damaged goods and he'd really have to have shown me some willingness to go back and study how to present himself to overcome his handicaps.  Perhaps he should be content with the Kingmaker title.

Did I get all the tropes?  Seriously, I'd vote for him.  WTF, at this point.

Kerry was in trouble in NJ and did last second defending there in 04, we'll know come about crunch time in the last month if polls show the Dem losing ground in tradtional blue states, if that happens it takes time away from getting states needed to win the election like it did w/ Mac in 08 in places like Indiana, Nort Carolina, & such.

They had to do 2 takes anyway, because the first one malfunctioned mechanically or due to operator error. A gun cannot hit (at least with dumb rounds) what it is not aimed at.

BTW, I have a lot of guns, too. Some of which I built myself.  I do not have a Soviet era 40 mm machine gun, though.

102 We need to run 2012 the way Obama ran 2008. Obama had Republicans in a tizzy in states like North Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, North Carolina, and Indiana- states that all went Bush by double digits. If we start planning the way he did, it isn't hard to imagine forcing him to waste $ in states like Oregon, New Jersey, Maine, and Washington- $ that can't be spent in Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Colorado or Nevada. Again, the math is good for G, but he burned too many people-including myself- to ever win a primary.

Guiliani is bald, old, has cancer and has a horrible marital history.

His best moments are a decade past and his main issues -- crime and security -- just aren't on the top burner.

I'm sorry that trump left the race.  I think the more the merrier.  the better the debates, the better the serious discussions, the better to get it all out on the table.  Make it a badge of honor, if you survive the republican primary proces, you can survive just about anything.

trump should get a bunch of accountants and Estates and trusts attorneys in to create trusts for each of his kids to run while he is running for president.  Then, just give his income from the apprentice and the use of his name.   If you put it all ITF the kids, then it's has nothing to do with him.  Other presidents have done similar things before.

The one kindly "little old lady" I heard speak with mark simone, sounded downright threatening.  Her man was mitt, no matter what reservations simone had, she said "well maybe he has some explaining to do, but" and then rattled on about not mentioning the others, particularly guiliani.  Oddly enough she was arguing that we need one true conservative in the bunch and that's mitt.  Now, I'm not a conservative but I didn't think mitt was a conservative, so who knows how people see things.

132 If Rudy could do for the country what he did for NYC that wouldn't be all bad.  His RINOism is mainly on the social side and as president he won't affect that much.  Plus he will tack right on those issues to get the nomination.  He is fifty trillion times better than Obama.

BS; I'll repeat what I said on the other thread:

There or some I consider as bad as Obama. Rudy is one of those. Any Republican who joins with a Democrat in a civil suit for the Supreme Court just so the Democrat can get standing is NOT a Republican.

And add that to the fact that he is a hardcore gun grabber. Not to mention a lying shit-weasel who can not be trusted.

But not to worry, I expect Rudy has about the same chance as Hunstman; ie zero.

136 So let's remember, the incurious one has suddenly jumped off the palin train because she went out to other sites and found her supporters to be too cult like and crazy.  But she was really really really hoping that Donald Trump would run, even though he was actively recruiting some of the nuttiest fringes to his banner with the birther stuff.

sometimes a good hard look at people and what they are spewing makes you wonder about the person or candidate that attracts those kinds of people.  I was a big Glenn Beck fan and that stopped but you only mention the palin stuff cause that suits your point.

I think all these folks should decide to run for president.  I think the more the merrier.  If you survive the primaries and the convention, which they are already saying in comments, is going to be "a split convention" which I don't even know what that means.  Then you are the nominee and you have the fight of your life on your hands.
