— Ace Three guesses.
It's not likely that a formal bailout will occur. As the OMB might say (the people who ware supposed to be crunching numbers and protecting the public fisc), the optics of that would be terrible.
But who knows.
But even absent a big, formal, declared bailout, there's some under-the-radar bailing-out going on.
The U.S. is coming to Europe's financial rescue. So far, America's role is fairly limited. But if the crisis continues to grow and the U.S. takes on a wider role, U.S. consumers and taxpayers could feel a bigger impact. The biggest exposure could come from America's status as the single largest source of money for the International Monetary Fund.
The latest round of American financial assistance came Thursday with a promise by the Federal Reserve to swap as many dollars for euros as European bankers need. In the short run, those transactions won't have much impact because the central banks are simply swapping currencies of equal value. If the move helps avert a wider crisis, it could help spare the global economy from another recession.
But over the long term, consumers could feel the impact of central bankers flooding the financial system with cash, according to John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics.
"This is a lender of last resort function," he told CNBC. "With the dollar injections that the Fed has done, it's like giving a patient medicine with really bad side effects." Ryding said the bad side effect in the U.S. has been inflation, which has picked up to 3.8 percent year over year.
Worse yet, Europe is doing this to avoid a political solution that its elites oppose for political reasons.
I am quite sure that I haven't the foggiest idea about how difficult it would be, in practical terms, to unwind this whole Euro/economies-joined-at-the-hip-of-currency Frankenstein's monster they've created. I'm sure it would be painful and difficult.
But I'm also sure that Europe's Elites have long made huge bets on this and are avoiding it at least partly because of the political repudiation that would follow.
So instead of giving that possibility a full and fair hearing, they keep doubling down on bailouts for the PIIGS, and we are enlisted to backstop this certain doom with our dollars.

Greece will bail first, so they have a sovereign currency to inflate to pay off their debts. As nobody pays taxes there, the downward spiral will go into overdrive.
Germany will probably bail right after, having said 'das ist verfikt' to the whole thing.

I was told that if a house wasn't completed, the government couldn't tax it, therefore, no house was completed.
I heard a similar thing. This guy ran a store where there were a lot of Costa Ricans. A lot of them would buy a carpet or a toilet or something, and then, before they even load it into their truck, they'd damage it. They'd even ask someone in the store for a hammer to borrow, and then they'd crack the porcelain, on purpose, in a back corner. In the case of carpeting, they'd burn it on an edge.
Then they'd send it to a relative in Costa Rica but avoid the tariffs on new goods because Look! it's damaged.

I was in Paris about 10 years ago, and my sister asked me to pick up some frog cosmetics. I went to a shop in some elegant and expensive neighborhood (think Rodeo Drive or Soho or Madison Ave.), where the clerks were actually trained to apply the crap as well as sell it. They were immaculately dressed young Parisians, all three were smokin' hot, and all three stank. Not just a whiff of body odor from a long day at work. It was full-on "I haven't bathed in three days" stench.
Disgusting. And they make fun of Americans.

No, what I've read is that the NATO treaty only requires mutual defense if the attack is unprovoked. The Israeli blockade on Gaza is legal and if the Turks try to run it, they've committed an act of war and NATO could opt out of coming to their assistance.

You're assuming rational decision making is taking place. Sadly, reason absented the premises a long time ago, probably about the time the folks building the EU said 'Sure, we'll let Greece in, we'll just tell them to behave and all will be well!'

Falklands were outside of the covered area
For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack:
on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France (2), on the territory of or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer; on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer.Attacking anything in Turkey, which they consider as a 'party in Europe' is different.

But I'm also sure that Europe's Elites have long made huge bets on this and are avoiding it at least partly because of the political repudiation that would follow.
Ace,
Repeatedly ignoring the votes against the EU have shown Euorocrats to be quite contemptuous of political repudiation. I think they're trying to avoid lynching, or at least reality forcing them to admit they were wrong and the peasant voters right.

We have no credit risk from Euro banks, that's not what's happening- there's no 'bailout' to not get repaid.
If you're worried about the Euro, remember:
1) It is wayyyy stronger than the USD right now, and
2) the swap will be repaid at the original rate.
So the US doesn't have any FX risk, the ECB just returns the dollars to the Fed. [As noted, the ECB can print all the euros they want to buy our dollars back anyway.]
The WH/Fed does a lot of dumb things, this is NOT one of them.

I see a 'Jimmy Carter' redux with all this tons of magic money being dumped into the world market the rocket has to take off sooner or later.
A couple weeks ago I went all in and invested. I had moved to cash back when the market was around 11000 the first time. Now I have stocks in companies you can't do with out - garbage hauling, food, gas and oil (particularly shale deposits), medical. I put a third into gold metal ETF as well.
You might want to stock in food and ammo. It won't go down in price that's for sure. If this goes Weirmar Republic or Zimbabwe you'll be miles ahead.
