Anderson Cooper Covers, Sort of, Fast and Furious
— Ace

An old left-leaning correspondent, Vonkers, tells me that media is covering Fast and Furious, and tells me Anderson Cooper did a piece on it last night in which he asked two questions: Was there any law enforcement goal here that you can imagine? And, Does this appear to be criminal?

He says the answers elicited were "No" and "Yes."

He does, however, set the piece up by saying that Fast and Furious was designed to track weapons sold to Mexico, which is patently false, and of course supports the Administration's "botched surveillance operation" lie, and then suggests that much of it was due to a "communication" error.

This is how he sets it up -- in the most Obama-friendly, nothing-to-see-here-folks-move-on way.

But my main gripe is that this is a classic example of assuming the answer to the question posed. The biggest question in Fast & Furious is Why? -- as of yet unanswered -- and yet Cooper purports to provide the answer right at the top of the report.

Now, as the piece unfolds, his correspondent undermines these premises. Supposedly.

I only have the clip below, which stops shortly after the correspondent begins to undermine Cooper's starting premises.

I'd be interested to see the rest of the clip, if anyone knows where it is.

Second clip: Down the page there is another clip on this. I've embedded that as well. It's this second clip where the interviewee says there was no law enforcement goal here.

12 Saw the last bit of the interview with the Sheriff last night. Damning stuff. IMO Anderson looked like he was about to puke, visibly shaken, towards the end. All the evils they have inferred to be Republican traits have come to fruition under the Obama and they are starting to realize it. This shit is by far worse than people know and heads should roll. NRA is covering it pretty thoroughly in its publications, some good info there.

75

I like the cut of Sheriff Babeu's jib.  I posted this on the other thread, but it bears repeating.  According to Fox News, 3 AZ mayors asked Sheriff Babeu to tone down his rhetoric in regards to border issues.  Here was his response:

Babeu, however, cited a rise in the amount of marijuana seized in his county, vehicle pursuits and calls to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in 2010 compared to those figures four years ago. In 2007, for example, 28,093 pounds of marijuana was seized in Pinal County, compared to 44,819 in 2010. Likewise, the number of vehicle pursuits in the country reached 340 last year, up from 142 in 2007.

"Feel free to 'drink the Kool-Aid' of Janet Napolitano, Dennis Burke and Barak [sic] Obama all day long, yet this threat to America remains, until our border is secured," Babeu's letter continued. "Their agenda is clear -- they want 'immigration reform' and must convince the public that everything is just fine."

Babeu recommends implementing a 10-point border security plan announced last April by Republican Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl. He also took issue with the mayors' attempt to begin a discussion on the issue.

"If your intent was to establish dialogue with me, you would have called, or at least waited for your letter to arrive by mail at my office, prior to releasing it to the media," Babeu's letter concludes. "You have done the very thing they accuse me of doing. I do not represent you, or the citizens of your community, yet I do represent the nearly 400,000 citizens of my county and the viewpoint of the solid majority of Arizonans, who laugh at Secretary Napolitano's suggestion that our border is more secure than ever."

Douglass Mayor Gomez responded late Wednesday by saying that Babeu "misses the point."

"No one is against border security or for drug/human trafficking," Gomez said in a written statement. "It is bad news to be predicting gun battles. He should appreciate our cityÂ’s law enforcement in preserving a peaceful environment at our bi-national border cities."

In an interview with FoxNews.com, Babeu said he has recently increased enforcement near the border with "constant patrols" by SWAT team officers armed with AR-15s and night vision goggles.

"I'm sending out deputies to meet these armed cartel members," Babeu said Wednesday. "And we will not use less than lethal force."

Babeu said the letter he received from the three mayors was an attempt to silence his stance on border security overall, rather than how he advocates for improving it.

"They want us to sit and shut up," he said. "Well, that's not going to happen. This isn't a time to sit on our hands and ignore the issue. It's a time for action."

Besides, we all know that those Mexican drug cartels are bad news.  Really bad.

88 Yeah, Anderson Cooper is a lightweight, light loafed pretty boy, but at least he does have a sense of humor and doesn't take himself too terribly serious.  That Celebrity edition of Jeopardy with him, Wolf Blitzer and Cheech Marin was the best evah.  He even subsequently was able to laugh at himself for losing to Cheech.  He even ran a little clip on his show about the humiliation of losing to one of the world's most famous potheads.  I don't think he's terribly smart, but at least he doesn't pretend to be (like Wolf, Andrea, David Gregory, and all those other idiots in the MFM).

It had moments. I like to think those occured when Lucas and Spielberg were taking a smoke break, brainstorming how to screw up "Jaws" by adding a talking CG dolphin sidekick with a slightly rascist Jamacian accent, and Harrison just went ahead and took over and adlibed a little.

I could have even done the aliens. Maybe. But really? And the part with the jerkoff from Transformers going through the jungle on vines. Hell, why was the jerkoff from Transformers even in there?

140 But my main gripe is that this is a classic example of assuming the answer to the question posed. The biggest question in Fast & Furious is Why? -- as of yet unanswered -- and yet Cooper purports to provide the answer right at the top of the report.

That's actually the text-book definition of "begging the question", not what most people think begging the question means (which is actually "posing" the question).

Obama calls it "Beggin' the question", but that's racist to point out.

I don't think so.  I don't see how they do that.  It's too big, and the penalties are too harsh for someone to be willing to take that hit.

Remember, with everyone else who went under the Obama bus (and the Clinton bus, before that) some cushy job (or, at least, reduced jail time) was waiting on the other end.

With this, we're literally talking "inciting war."  As in: someone could be executed for this.  I don't think you're going to find anyone willing to take that fall.

I think the SCOAMF and his Holder will cover this up as long as possible, and then get the heck out of dodge.

You know, this coverage by Anderson Cooper is still pretty brutal.  It may not be directly pointing the finger at Obama or anything but anyone who watched this could not have gone away thinking that this whole operation was anything but an Obama administration, big government disaster that got Americans killed by doing illegal stuff.

I especially liked the messenger--he broke it down directly and concisely; he spoke plainly and used small words so there could be no confusion.  Even your average knuckle dragging CNN viewer can understand what happened.

For as much as I cannot stand the guy, I agree with this assessment.  I also note that while Ace concisely summarizes AC's upfront F&F purpose statement, AC sure seemed to take quite a few stumbling words in an attempt to state that. I had to go to Laredo yesterday for work. Its too late down there. English is practically a second language and my spanish is no weno. To influence policy in US? More likely. Way too sloppy to have been a CIA operation. So, probably a ham-fisted DOJ operation? If so, what was DOJ up to? Okay, but how does that work?

Given that it was kept secret from the Mexican government, what does Obama (or the Administration more generally) gain from giving Calderon more ammo to complain about the US?

And Mexico already prohibits civilian gun ownership, IIRC, so it's not like we'd be helping them get "more stringent gun control" passed or anything.

what happened to the market?

Countries don't have a handled on all the money they owe, and the stock market is reflecting that.

The most important country in all of this is the United States. Remember that looming August 2 deadline with our country's debt ceiling? Before that deadline was imminent, the S&P 500 was comfortably above 1240. Then, when our government decided it wasn't going to get its shit together, stock prices dropped. That index has been bouncing between 1120 and 1230 ever since.

The daily news from places like Greece make it go up or down, but it seems stuck in that range.

255 I'd agree, AllenG, but you're assuming that Calderon didn't know about F&F.

I'm not assuming that, I'm deducing that.  It just doesn't make any sense to me that Calderon and Los Federales would have known anything about it.

They're having enough trouble with the cartels without us giving them even more weapons.

Calderon bitched about US guns in front of a Joint Session. How is that not a touchdown for the anti-gunners?

How is it a touchdown for them?  Last I knew, Congress generally doesn't give a rat's behind what the President of Mexico thinks about our laws.

Biden encouraged voters, "not to compare [Obama] to the Almighty, compare him to the other guy,"

Lucifer?  Yeah, I could see that.

258 [nothing] but blog fodder

You say that like its a bad thing. Don't most big stories now start as blog fodder? They sure don't start with MFM.

I'm not diminishing the importance of blogs. Especially after the Weiner smack-down that Ace was in on.

However, it will take someone with the power to fire the sacks of medical waste involved in Fast and Furious to get this party started.

Nothing starts with the MFM but Obama's next campaign ad.

Heh.  Happy to have added to your nickname repertoire, especially for that criminal Holder.  I hate him worse that SCoaMF and that's saying something.

268 What went on with the other gunwalker efforts in non-border states

Posted by: Jean at September 29, 2011 11:39 AM (WkuV6)

269 Sharyl Attkisson of CBS -- the only "big-time" journalist working this story on an ongoing basis, and she's been doing it well -- reported Monday that O'Reilly, one of the three WH staffers who knew for sure about F&F (because Gunwalker Bill Newell was in communication with them; another was Dan Restrepo) has been shuffled over to State and then sent "on a previously scheduled assignment" (nice touch there from the DOJ) to Iraq.

Hope Mr. O'Reilly is looking under everything that has an underside to look under.

maybe that's true for you but not for everyone else.  I know folks are clicking my links for a fact.  Most people realize the guys with their dicks thing, which was not gay porn, btw, and you are the only one who keeps bringing this up,  was an absolute error and embarrassment.  People think for themselves, they read the original exchange and they make their own decisions.

274 And Mexico already prohibits civilian gun ownership, IIRC, Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) is tired beyond tired of the trolls at September 29, 2011 03:14 PM (8y9MW) Not entirely, though restrictions and licensing are stricter than the US. There is at least one city that has signed a lot of civilians up for publicly-provided self-defense training (with guns) to try to fight crime. I don't have the link handy, sorry, and I'm rushing out the door.

277 "Last I knew, Congress generally doesn't give a rat's behind what the President of Mexico thinks about our laws." The left grabs anything within reach to bash 2A rights. It's a reflex. They know they have no traction to get anything done with legislation. They know they will not get a UN Arms Trade Treaty ratified. That doesn't stop them from pursuing their anti-gun agenda.

278 It seems to me like they hung the ATF Director out to dry the same way they are trying to do w/ Energy Secretary Chu on Solyndra. Obama deemphasized these dept. heads when he appointed all his unvetted super-Cabinet level people back in '09; so, now we're supposed to believe that people like Chu have all this authority? Am I wrong here? Probably posting too late again.
