— Ace No, really. You lot.
I was at his book signing yesterday in DC, at ATR (Americans for Tax Relief), for his new book, Righteous Indignation.
I spoke to him a bit. Here is the actual exchange:
Breitbart: "You have the best commenters on the internet."
Me: "I know, I hear that all the time." (Subtext: Stop complimenting other people and tell me something good about me.)
Breitbart: "Seriously, they're hysterical."
Me: "Mind if I quote you on that?" (Subtext: I'm funny too, you know.)
Breitbart: "No, go ahead, quote me. Actually, I usually don't even read the articles, I just go to the comments to, uh, see...."
Me: "To get a sense of the room?"
Breitbart: "Yes, to see how things are playing, what people are thinking."
Me: "Well, even though that's kind of a put-down [strained smile] I'll quote you on that too."
So, there you go: Breitbart reads you guys to get a sense of where the movement is heading.
He also, at the end, seemed to suggest some kind of plan to get you guys over on his site, but I'm not sure why he would think I would conspire with him on that.
By the way, I just put my last post into draft because it's long and has more of a "lazy Saturday afternoon long thinky-post" feel to it. I'll cut it some and post it tomorrow.
I also wanted to report a little more on the little bits of rumor I heard yesterday, but I really want to get this up before 5 pm. So I'm posting this part now; I'll do the other stuff later.
Added to the Dialogue: Yes, I'm going from memory, but most of it is actually accurate to the word. I forgot he did say "hysterical." I added that in.
And actually, this was the second time I'd heard this this very night (in a two hour span). Another guy (not a celebrity type) said the same thing.
I honestly do always hear this. Always. Usually the second thing after "I love your blog" or "It's the one I refresh fifteen times a day" (same thing) is the "You have the best commenters" line.

Not only is AoS a great military blog, it has the ability to shape opinion. Posters come for information, and with the wide range of respondents, many have knowledge bases that far eclipse what's available elsewhere. I come for the knowledge, snark, and entertainment, but stay for the ball busting and cooter jokes.

Good commentors, and good comments, are a reflection of the intellectual curiosity, tolerance, and open mindedness of the guy running the show. That and the right amount of valuerite. (I either need more or less, i can't tell which)
Nothing turns off people with something to add more than when the guy in charge tears into someone for disagreeing with him. That almost never happens here.

2) We establish our own identities in a semi-unique way.
3) The long, open comment sections encourage a "narrative commenting" that brings people back and "extends the conversation."
It's kind of a unique feel. We also have different day and night shifts, with a very different "flavor," though some people cross over.
Most sites either have a small in-group of regular commenters or a vast swath of random posters who don't really know each other, AoS kind of has both.
IIRC the "Big" sites have user ratings, which is kind of helpful, and kind of pointless. I haven't felt the need to really comment there, at least not enough to register. The conversations are short and strident.
The "barrier to entry" at AoS is pretty darned low.

I'll tell you why. Ace has no registration.
People who are insightful and funny are not going to bother with entering a password, enabling cookies, and generally fucking around with all the crap that goes into a closed system.
We weed out trolls on our own, and police ourselves. Getting a herd of sheep that agree to registration is the surest #1 way to mediocrity and boredom (see Hot Air). It's also the surest way to a cloistering den of fetid groupthink. Again, see Hot Air.
Breitbart can learn something from that if he wants a lively comment section.

I was one of those folks who never thought or talked politics. Until 2008. Somehow (I really can't remember), my first foray into politics started with following WND. Again, I don't know how I came across that site. I don't think it was birtherism, that doesn't draw me in more than a sideshow, a passing morbid curiosity. But WND did vent about liberal abuses and outrages. I didn't stay there long. Soon I learned of Michelle Malkin and made her site my home, then Hot Air.
After seeing Ace get linked a few times and Hot Air, I eventually visited the main page and read more than the one link. And I was hooked. I wasn't thrilled about the lack of RSS, but I love the content so much that I put up with it. I now consider AoSHQ my home for news. While the volume of contents keeps me from reading each and every one, I skim most articles'. I love the intelligence, wit, and humor in here.
My wife has political opinions in line with mine, but she doesn't follow the news. Her info comes from my parroting to her what I read here. (Some things I don't dare parrot, though.

I think the wild nature is both why this place is so cool and why it's so hard to move toward mainstream or commercialization (The "Big" sites are, to some extent, moneymakers and designed from the ground up to be so - as was Hot Air, Pajamas Media - not saying that's all they are).
I would like to see Ace make more money (I'd throw more in the kitty but I have no income right now - I'll try to remember when the money starts flowing again), but I can see how that's difficult.
I mean, look at some of the best Ace rants and imagine them as a "last appearance on Fox News before the restraining order." Which is kind of their loss because some brilliant formulations have come from the keyboard of the head Ewok.
The really sick, ironic thing is that if you could imagine a Bizarro World Ace, complete with eurodouche hipster hair and glasses, that was a leftist, he'd not only fit into the mainstream but would probably have a Schultz / Olbermann / Maher level TV show by now.
Also, while I *love* the 'shops, they would absolutely kill Pixy. Links and hosting sites, people.
If I had any energy, I'd maybe write a plugin or assist program that made it easier to host and create tinyurl links, edit text and paste it into the editor ready-to-go.
And maybe manage socks as well, that gets a little wonky sometimes.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit this. I read this site for several months (almost a year) w/out reading the comments.
I hate one-upsmanship, but feel compelled to make you feel better because I have a worse embarrassment. When I became interested in politics and started reading up on it on the net during the 2008 primaries, I mainly read DailyKooks and firedoglake. They were the first sites I stumbled across and once I became familiar with RCP, HotAir, AoS and others I read them all regularly for awhile to gather me up some education.
Never bought into lefty politics but it was a real eye-opener to see the contrast in which news stories were adressed or ignored on the various sites. And to see with my own eyes how blantant the MSM lies/slanders/distorts/etc. It also didn't take long to see what a huge contrast there is in the quality of thought behind comments at various sites.
At the risk of being a suck-up, AB is right, Ace commenters are the smartest and funniest hands down. Ace is a very smart and insightful writer. And smart is sexy.
I only visit the lefty sites occasionnaly now, to see how delusional they are on a given topic. But they're more into despair than hopenchange these days, and the posts and comments bore me to tears.

Btw, I never got banned by the pony-tailed bike riding ukelele playing horse's ass either when his insanity hit critical mass; I just completely stopped going to that cesspool. Posted by: Voice of Reason at April 22, 2011 04:47 PM (LNaCu)
Oh good media matters is here. Actually the clip that Brietbart posted did indeed show that Shirly Sherrod failed to help some farmers because they were white.
Later when they were days from losing their farm they called her back and only then did she agree to help them.
If they had not called her back or if she had been out of the office the white family would have indeed lost their farm due to Shirley Sharrods racism.
Not that facts ever mattered to media matters.

Posted by: Vic at April 22, 2011 12:52 PM (M9Ie6)
Brietbart's point in showing the video was not that Sherrod was a racist, but the NAACP crowd's reaction to her when they thought, at that part in her speech, that she was. He was pointing out the hypocrisy of the NAACP, which at the time was accusing the TEA party of having racists among them, by showing an NAACP crowd cheering comments that Sherrod later put into context. The point being that they cheered before those comments were put into context.

My kind of place. Take it for what it is worth. You have provided a place that like minded people come for good times and serious discussion. You deserve compliments. Thanks.

I came because of the DOOM posts. Monty's posts were the first things I've been reading that came close to my personal view of the US, EU and Chinese economic situation. I like HotAir, less so since these damn movie ads keep popping up now, but the economic news here has a more realistic feel to it, with no spin. It is what it is. I've also been REALLY impressed with Ace's commentaries and the others over the last few months too.
And the commenters rule too since the comments here sometimes approach how I truly feel about Islam and what should be done with them.

Well, that's a relief.
It's terrifying to write for so many people.
Actually, I've written for a bigger audience, but as a ghost writer. And yes, it's just an anonymous post written under the world's most stupid pseudonym but still ... you don't want to get heckled by your pretend internet friends.
Anyway, the thing I always loved about Ace of Spades is how ace managed to build a community, not just a blog.
I tried my hand at blogging sometime around 2004-2005 but couldn't build anything similar to what ace already had here.
So I started squatting on his property.

I despise Allahpundit but his commentors are even worse. I dropped by yesterday on the birther thread to make fun of them to their cyber faces----Ed was "embarassed", the commentors were all busy apologizing to each other.

And, I've mentioned before, dowtown Vegas is less expensive than the strip.

LGF followed the same pattern. The comments section used to be a quasi free-for-all with some really great posters until Comic Book Guy (i.e the CJ bereft of a bicycle seat) started inserting himself more and more into the comments section. Doesn't help that he went completely batshit insane after 2008.

In the first video, Sherrod describes how she racially discriminates against a white farmer. She describes how she is torn over how much she will choose to help him. And, she admits that she doesn’t do everything she can for him, because he is white. Eventually, her basic humanity informs that this white man is poor and needs help. But she decides that he should get help from “one of his own kind”. She refers him to a white lawyer.
SherrodÂ’s racist tale is received by the NAACP audience with nodding approval and murmurs of recognition and agreement. Hardly the behavior of the group now holding itself up as the supreme judge of another groupsÂ’ racial tolerance.

Because if this is all true (and again, I believe it is, more or less) I simply cannot understand why this man is not anathema. I cannot understand why anyone trusts what he says or views him with anything but the deep contempt reserved for those who falsely accuse. What Breitbart did is exactly on par with the loathsome Alan Grayson's loathsome "Taliban Dan" ads.
What do you think of this comment, Mr. Breitbart?
I'll tell you what I think of it, Mr. Concerned. Your comment is bullshit, and you obviously didn't read the article he posted with the video. If you had, you would know that he addressed your concerns. He actually stated exactly what you seem to be so concerned about. Didn't here that from the bullshit media, did you? You didn't do any research on your own, either, did you?

Morning.
I filled up for 3.89 at the pump this morning. There was a news crew there interviewing people on their opinion on gas prices. The news gal asked if I wanted to share my thoughts on air. I said sure but I told her I'd be saying that B. Obama could eat a bag of dicks.
Needless to say, I didn't make the news this morning.

Start talking about Long Bows. I double dog dare you.
One of my favorite unintentionally hilarious moments in the history of this blog.
Here is ace, as upset as I've ever seen him, screaming at people in the comments for being racist fuckwads ... trying to make several important points about why their chickenshit behavior is not only offensive, but is harming him on a personal level ...
...and two or three long time commenters are obliviously arguing about the fucking history of longbows in the same comment thread.
It's as stupid and off-topic as you can get.
Just reading the juxtaposition between ace's red-faced tirade and the clueless, history-nerd discussion happening around it had me doubled over in laughter. Especially when ace became so exasperated that he created a fucking longbow thread so that they'd stop diluting the current one with their discussion.

1) Necessary but obviously not sufficient, because you still live in that damned hole and will *not* poke your head out to see the world.
2) Do you have *ANY* idea what blog you are posting at? Have you *EVER* read anything here before? You're like some German tourist in downtown Tokyo with a French phrasebook, angry that no one speaks your language.
3) People who make false accusations do not deserve respect. This means you, because you seem to have a hard time dealing with simple propositions and everything has to be explained to you twice.
So the claim that Breitbart's purpose was to highlight the crowd's reaction simply does not stand up to the evidence and is not credible, and even if true would excuse the harm he did to Sherrod. It's the sort of argument that is only used (and accepted, I hope) by people who first decide what side of an issue they're on, then come up with arguments to use.
Posted by: Voice of Reason at April 22, 2011 05:49 PM (LNaCu)
1) Well, it's what he said he did. I leave it to you to come up with a devious conspiracy their about what he really meant.
2) You don't do harm to people by showing what they did, they do the harm.
3) I wasn't agreeing with your inane proposition that she's *not* a racist, she clearly is (she sent him off to be helped by one of his *own* people). I was just pointing out that you're abusing the context because of your personal vendetta against Breitbart, and demanding an apology from Breitbart for what Obama and his administration did.
Yeah, I'm bored. I'll claim it as practice on my tax return.

You seem to be purposely overlooking the fact that Sharrod being her racist self refused to help the white couple because they were white. She was being racist.
She later had a change of heart and helped them because that was her job. Racists do their job everyday, I am not going to applaud them for it like you evidently want to.
I never heard Shirley Sherrod apologize for failing to help them in the first place because of their skin color. Did you?

You present your assumptions as facts and then ask for factual refutation. Until you can point to an NSA intercept of Breitbart saying: "Wow, we set up that Sherrod woman, huh?", I'm just going to have to take his version of the events over yours since his comports with a very loooooooooong history of NAACP hypocrisy on race issues.

In fact, a lot of AoSHQ posters felt so at the time. I think Ace's theory of what happened (in the context of the NAACP ramping those "Tea Party racism" accusations he jumped eagerly on a piece of evidence that was just a bit Too Perfect) is correct.
But what else do you want? You want him to fall on his sword and let the jackals eviscerate him? I actually thought he should admit his error early on, but what's done is done, and given how much good work he's done, does, and will do, I'm not about to harp on it. Especially because Sherrod turns out to be a corrupt scumbag knee-deep in Pigford scandal money.
See? That wasn't so hard to say, and nobody's running me out of AoSHQ on a rail. Because there's a difference between the argument I'm making and what you seem to want, which is his public decapitation in front of live MSNBC cameras. You want his blood? We won't give you his blood.

Are you certain that you've kept up on the Breitbart-Sherrod brouhaha? You know,of course that Breitbart went with what he was given, and that if you watch the entire (released later) video, Sherrod's words, via transcript, make her look reasonably noble, BUT her audience's reaction, on the video at the time she is speaking, show something .. a bit different.
Sherrod's audience seems to hear her "dog whistle". Listen to her words and their reactions; Sherrod doesn't seem to be quite the victim you seem to be portraying. How is her lawsuit agains B. progressing?

Like I said in an earlier comment, I don't typically participate in or even read comment threads, not being a fan of echo chambers, but I've been seeing all my favorite bloggers continue to cite Breitbart, continue to link to Breitbart, continue to discuss Breitbart with respect and approval and I've been wondering why, why, why, don't all these people, whom I believe to be good and moral, see what a horrible thing this man did and demand that he apologize?
OK, every blog has its fanboyism. This one is no exception. It can be a place for serious debate, or it can be a place where you need to get with the meme of the day and otherwise shut up.
But I think you have your facts wrong about the Sherrod story. I thought she was telling a laughing NAACP crowd how she typically turned away white farmers, sent them to lawyers, in her government job. Breitbart's video showed this.
Then, she determined it was wrong and she would no longer be racist. His video did not show that.
Now she's a hero.

Not to suck our own cocks too much, but honestly, this site has the most diverse (and balanced) span of opinion from all corners of the right. Paleocons, neocons, RINOs, libertarians, curious moderates, lace wig aficionados, etc. For the most part we get along even as we talk shit to each other too. It's a good dynamic for the most part, until every now and then someone on one end of the argument or another gets a little too crazy.
And this may be before a lot of people's time, but I kind of miss Cedarford. He was a fun sort of crazy, almost a troll mascot to kick around.

Same here. I just lurked, and didnt stay long after Rather. I came back during the Israel war, and Pallywood, then left once everyone was a racist, and I couldn't figure out what proof he had.
I started with Rush of course, then I found Limbaugh... *ba-dum-dum*
Then I fell in love with what Michelle Malkin was saying (and other things), so I started going there, and when I noticed she didn't post that often, I started looking thru her blogroll... and guess who's first on the list...
After that, I've hattipped some things here, and at Jawa, made a lil video for a contest Newt Gingrich was running for free gas (I came in 2nd, in front of Zo!!) and then mainly lurked, or joined in the live blogs. Oh, and I play the Fantasy Football thang every year.
Well, anyway, thats me.. I all of a sudden felt like I was in a 12 step program LFGA or something lol...

Though argument about using money elsewhere to fight winning battles was correct.
Best fights we had were Natural Born citizen fights. Ace pisses me off, like Glenn Beck does on this subject. I say who care if Obama popped out of Lady Liberty's Anus! With tons of proof, doesn't change fact his father was never an American citizen. So yes Obama is citizen, but not a natural-born citizen.
Surprised Andy didn't say anything about Dave in Texas. Too me he's really the big toe around here. You ever hear the story about him at kids game and he got the runs? Hilarious!

Embrace the suck, folks! Br-rrrrrreit-bart! and Iowahawk and a whole host of other web celebs or otherwise, lurkers, and gov't ****s know where the shit's at:
Anyway, if the chief ewok offered a 'pay to the order of' name and a snailmail address, for a job well done, I'd be happy to donate anonymously, via money order, to an entity who has entertained, educated, stimulated, agitated, etc. etc. me over these past 7 years.
You know how to contact me, bro.

Oh yeah, I did that on purpose (why would I post that sort of bait otherwise?). C'mon, it's fun to clown on my persona sometimes, even I know that.
You can't be the way I am online and not expect to have a few shots get taken at you. I actually really like the funny ones (as they say in New York, "fuck you if you can't take a joke"). The only things I can't stand are people personalizing it (by which I mean using my family or friends in the attack). Everything else, though? Whatever, I can speak for myself.

Generally well thought of on Ricochet and Twitter as a wit and raconteur. Hobnobbed with the Big Names of punditry. But you guys rock, and I'm sometimes intimidated to post because some days I just ain't feelin teh funny. But often see a news story and think, "man I bet the Morons are tearing this up"

I came here through a link several years ago. I'll never forget the comment thread that roasted Al Gore over the coals by re-naming movie titles. I was laughing so hard that I cried.
Yes, I too got banned by Charles. Got fed up with his circular reasoning regarding Robert Spencer and Pam Geller and decided that it was time to get banned. Took about 30 seconds. HA!
When I first read this post, I wanted to feel all congratulatory for Ace getting recognized by Breitbart, but by the time I got to the end of the thread, I decided, "Fuck yeah" he needs to read this blog on a daily basis. The commentors here are definitely the best.
Last thing I read every night. Keeps me sane.

I have to disagree. There are a lot of great blogs with quality political analysis. Where Ace distinguishes himself is the quality and caliber of stories about stupidty on parade, and of course, the self-effacing humor. It's not called the Moronosphere for nothing.
