— Ace Pretty uncomfortable.
I think Ann Coulter sounds just a clumsy and desperate in playing the race card as the average lefty does. I don't think it's accurate to say Politico wouldn't have written this story about a white Republican.
That's a daft as claiming that conservatives wouldn't oppose a nationalization of health care if it came from a white liberal politician. They always seem to forget we did just that. (Oh, right, Clinton was the first black president.)
Meanwhile, Cain had his best fundraising day ever.

Perry refused to comment on the allegations of sexual harassment facing opponent Herman Cain.
“As a good rule of thumb until things go past allegations to a fact, I just try to leave them alone,” Perry said.

Yeah, I don't think this is racially based. This is pure mudslinging against a Republican, plain and simple.
If anything, the actual sexual harassment claims may have been racially motivated. I don't know a thing about the race of the accusers, but "everyone knows what black guys are like," right?
And no, I'm not saying that's what happened. Just that it's as much a possible storyline as anything else anyone's mentioned.
Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Hobbit at November 01, 2011 12:23 PM (4df7R)
I actually it might be productive to look for racial issues with the accuser's (the 2 women) motivations for targeting Cain.
If the interactions were as innocuous as Cain claims... and I believe him, I have issues with the fact he knew this was coming and didn't prepare, but I don't get any kind of vibe that Cain is a womanizer, anyway, if these women brought charges against Cain and he was just being friendly, were they extra sensitive because of race?
Is Politico supporting the accusations of racists against Cain?
Where is Gregory Peck when you need him?

I love Ann...great mind, but I think she's going too far on this. They'd flay a white republican equally. That said, I do think they're doing this because an independent-minded black conservative scares the s--t out of the media & the Left (but I repeat myself.) In the sense that they feel the need to make sure blacks & other minorities / victim groups stay on the ideological plantation, then yes Liberals are racist as hell.

It's not racist, nor is it really "mudslinging". We keep forgetting that Cain himself acknowledged that there were sexual harassment claims against him by two women, which were resolved by legal settlement.
Does anyone really think this wouldn't have come out eventually, or isn't at all worthy of coverage?
These claims were made in the 90's, so it would be absurd to suggest they were politically motivated. Perhaps the claims themselves were baseless or an innocent misunderstanding, maybe not. We don't know.

Maybe this matters or maybe it doesn't, but if his main qualification is his corporate leadership and he has a pattern of allegations against him (two not being a pattern yet, but it's early days on this story), then I think that's relevant. Moreover, since this is the guy who volunteered that he would factor religion into his hiring practices - then reversed himself after doing his act of contrition to the usual Islamist apologists - I honestly have no difficulty believing that he factors gender into his employment practices as well.
There are bad bosses out there and there are women who truly have been harassed at work.

Meh. IDK. If this is *ALL* they had, some spurious vague settled matter with no juicy details, I'm not sure they would push it.
And they (Dems MFM) do have a trend going here, a black conservative, spurious weak sauce allegations of harassment from God knows when. All too familiar.
I'm not saying there is any fact to the allegations of racism, I'm saying you *could* make an argument from it and not be totally in left field.
In reality if pushing this is perpetrated by the left, then I don't think they are doing it because they are racist against blacks, not to say that they aren't racist against blacks because they are, but simply not doing this because of it. They would be doing this because they think it will work, and they think it will work because they believe we continue to believe a tired stereotype about black men.
In short, it wouldn't be an indication of their very real racist beliefs, but evidence of how little they think of the us the Republican base. When they say we are ignorant racists, they do believe it, so why wouldn't this work in their mind?

Yes it's hyperbole if I'm right in my hunch, but instructive . And I agree Levy doesn't care for conservatives much on the show... always feels the need to call them out or point out any hypocritical thing he think he's seen or heard.

Reposted in full because it deserves to be repeated and emphasized. Hey there, Cain fans: is there a single one of you willing to pretend that this is somehow NOT news? A leading Presidential candidate has documented payoffs to multiple women in his past for sexual harrassment claims, and it's "mudslinging" and "racist" to report that? This isn't a case of a random woman coming forward with unconfirmed allegations -- there was a documented payoff at the time. Maybe they were BS charges, but that's for Cain to argue, not the media to simply decide to not report.

There was, consciously acknowledged or not, a list of reasons for deploying this particular "Think 'bad penis' about this man" story—a story that, as actually released, was of unpublishable quasi-non-story vagueness—and "Dude's black" is on that list.
It's possibly below "Dude's a Republican" and "'Baggers love him" and "He's a Jesus guy," but it's there.
Because, really, it's on the list of reasons why the intended audience would accept a "Think 'bad penis'" quasi-non-story about Cain, and put it to its intended use. Thomas is the obvious precedent, isn't he? And...why? Why him, too? Little of this, little of that, little "Dude's black."
The audience (picture them) wouldn't accept (or at least not properly use) the exact same story about Romney, would they? He's not right for the part, is he? They kinda would about Perry or Gingrich (because they're a certain kind of men, y'know?), but not really.
They wouldn't about any Democrat, except...whoever the black-Democrat equivalent of Joe Lieberman is (if there is one). And maybe Jim Webb, if they're mad at him again this week.
See what I'm getting at?
Coulter indeed doesn't get it, because she's about talkin' shit, not about getting things. And this is kind of a hard one.

-if Fox News or even Hillaries campaign had ran story this flimsy against Obama the left would call it race agitating (they would know) e.g. "white women scared of black men"
-The left is desperate to keep the lie that republicans are racists and must maintain a 80% of the black vote or they cease to be a competitive national party.
So those are the two race related parts of this story, I don't think Cains' race motivated politico but then they have engaged in a lot of pure slander against us sooo.

Are you crazy? What was "unpublishable" about this story as it stood? Please, answer that question in a way that doesn't make you sound ridiculously partisan. Say what you will about Politico, but they thoroughly reported out the story, investigated every angle, made no insinuations as to the truth or falsity of the harrassment claims, even examined the actual settlement documents, and gave Cain 10 days of lead time to respond, which he frittered away. That last part is FAR more than any candidate who was truly the victim of a "dirty" hit would ever get, and if anything speaks to the fact that Politico was really going out of their way to cover their ass on this.
If you have a problem with the story as reported, it's because you have a problem with the "bad facts." But you can't wish facts away. And the argument that it's somehow not newsworthy is nutty. The leading GOP candidate in the 2012 Presidential race was found to have made previously undisclosed payouts to multiple women to settle sexual harassment claims in the past. Seriously, just read that previous sentence again and then try to claim that it's not majorly newsworthy without laughing.

Y-Not, there was a genuine fear of the black man as over sexed. The idea many of the racists had back in the day was that the black man was dangerous around women especially white women. Hell, To Kill a Mockingbird was based on that idea. Here the left is making that old tired idea resurface hoping that it's subliminally present. They are hoping here for the reaction they thought they were going to get from the right when they gleefully exposed Dick Cheney's daughter to be a lesbian. Then already think the right is a bunch of racists (they, of course, are the real racists) and that reminding the right of the sexual predatory nature of the black man will float all that old fear to the surface. Hell they would love to reignite a full out race war. They figure if they play it right Bull Conner will rise from the dead and speak at the republican convention.
What makes this funny is that no one under the age of 45 gets it and those over 45 have to either be well read or from an area that whispered this kind of thing as late as the 60s. It's shocking to me that they remember so well that stereotype.

No, they did not give Cain 10 days. It's being reported like that but they WORKED ON IT FOR 10 DAYS not that Cain had 10 days to respond. Also, maybe if they were good reporters THEY WOULD HAVE INTERVIEWED SOMEONE WHO HAD WORKED FOR HIM OTHER THAN THE ACCUSERS.
They could have, you know, asked the other bazillion women he has worked with if he was that type? Every angle? Hardly.
This was a typical liberal msm hit piece on a republican. While they were suggesting he had different answers in the same day they never suggested that he got new information just that he lied. If it were Obama they would have been falling all over themselves saying he had new info, he had spoken to someone, he was briefed, etc. They wouldn't have suggested he lied because he had more information.

I've tuned Coulter out for years now, ever since I read her book, Treason, where she accused General George Marshall, one of the greatest American patriots of the 20th Century, of being a communist sympathizer. She made the accusation against General Marshall because the book was essentially a defense of Senator Joe McCarthy. In order to refurbish McCarthy's reputation, she had to somehow validate, rationalize, and justify McCarthy's last and most infamous accusation, the accusation that completely destroyed McCarthy's credibility (and made any subsequent attack on real communist subversives seem like witch-hunting persecution).
Coulter's attempt to murder the memory of a great man won't be forgotten, not by me. She's a hack. Everything she writes or says is suspect.

We're asking a good question and getting no answers: Why not just go with the racism charge? What do we have to lose? Do we not defend black candidates from (what are to me) trivial crap like this?
Isn't it good politics to be "just asking questions" about possible racism? Doesn't the "seriousness of the charge" demand questions being asked? Are there any black votes to pick up?

Posted by: AmishDude at November 01, 2011 01:04 PM (T0NGe)
Not sure what you mean, precisely, but I do agree that the charge has to be presented in the proper light, i.e. throwing the Left's own "principle" back at them, and not as a whiny claim to a "Get out of Jail Free" card.
But this idea of "lowering the bar"? Well, the aggressor establishes the mode of conflict, so you must match it if you want to win. As is often said here, "Don't bring a knife to a gunfight."

Exactly. I'm not sure because I haven't been paying attention to Rush since he went all anti-Romney and I only like Ann occasionally... at any rate. I'm glad she's with Romney, but I can only take so much of her.
If there is anything racist it would be that stereotype. That may be too subtle for Rush and Coulter. But they did hit on something they may not even be aware of.
Gregory Peck was the lawyer in to Kill a Mockingbird, defending a black man against the charge of rape.

That's not how to do it. Here's how to do it.
BREAKING: Unconfirmed reports have been obtained by Ace of Spades, Inc. LLC that JONATHAN MARTIN of POLITICO is being accused by local petting zoo officials of "unnatural" "acts" with a goat. The sources say that although the acts were not overtly sexual in nature, the goat is reported to be skittish every time he sees a person standing nearby with a notepad. Ace of Spades, Inc. LLC will have developments as they emerge but there has been no comment yet from POLITICO.
And then, you write a dozen stories about Politico's (non-)reaction to the story.

Posted by: Otis Criblecoblis at November 01, 2011 01:10 PM (fjoLg)
I don't have a problem with the media report this as it was apparently true. I'm sure they wanted to find a bigger scandal, or give the impression of one, but what was reported wasn't created out of thin air. That's not to say that the MFM won't blantently lie whenever they can.
Also, Ann Coulter has a total shrew thing going on. Is it true that she dated Bill Maher? If so, that tells me all I need to know about her. I don't think she's who she want people to beleive she is, but plays a part just to sell books.
Andy Levi can be a little too smug and smartass sometimes. I don't like the know-it-all presence that he puts out on the show. But I maybe that's his persona. I don't know what he's like outside of Red Eye.

Second, it will not have the impact you want.....you are not going to peel away any African American voters by launching a lame "its racism" against Herman Cain charge.
This is just argument by assertion.
I don't know that you have to scream "Racism!" to get the point across. Because I personally think the charges are petty, it might be politic to stand with My Man Herman. (He's not my man.) Sure, it's laughable to claim it would not have been reported if he were not black, but you could say that the hysteria about decades old workplace bullshit is racially motivated.
I'm thinking out loud, but not talking myself out of thinking this is a fair idea. Of course, I have no self-respect and no reputation to lose, either.

Yes and no. They have a niche that they exploit, but as Rush has said, he'd make a lot more money as a liberal.
Look at Mark Steyn. Steyn is so insanely talented that if he decided to be a liberal, he'd win Pulitzers every other year and be the top columnist at the NYT.
To say what they said about this whole thing is good for business. Everyone's talking about them.

I'm partial to the truth. It is racist. They would have reported it about the white guy but maybe not with NO EVIDENCE AT ALL.
Don't you find the lack of evidence a little racist. Like we should just believe it of Cain? Believe he's like Jesse Jackson Marion Berry Bill Clinton without thinking twice?

I really hate that I agree (once again) with the Liberal AosHQ Reader, but there you have it. I've always thought this, more or less. I don't think it's ENTIRELY true at all -- there's no question that both are genuinely conservative, it's not like they're playacting the way I've always been convinced Michael Savage is -- but it's hard to shake the fact that Rush Limbaugh never, ever, ever tells his audience anything other than what they want to hear. I listen to him extremely frequently, and not once have I heard him attempt to challenge the views of his listeners.
Actually, I give Coulter more credit than Limbaugh on that score: she's actually gone out on a limb (and hurt herself among a certain segment of her originally purely TrueCon base) by full-throatedly endorsing groups like GOProud and guys like Christie. Truth be told, I've come around on Coulter a bit: I used to loathe her as a self-promoting bomb-thrower, but I kind of like her as a canny controversialist nowadays.
She's just completely wrong on this one, is all.

Dagny: you and Chris Plante (who I listen to on the way to work on occasion) are 100% wrong. From Politico's original story:
"In a series of comments over the past 10 days, Cain and his campaign repeatedly declined to respond directly about whether he ever faced allegations of sexual harassment at the restaurant association. They have also declined to address questions about specific reporting confirming that there were financial settlements in two cases in which women leveled complaints."

He's wrong about that. There's a market for conservative talk radio, because conservatives (rightfully) feel like they are disenfranchised by the MSM. There is no similar widespread market for liberal talk radio, no matter how good the host, because despite what liberals claim ("ZOMG THE MEDIA IS CORPORATE CONSERVATIVE!!") their needs are being met by mainstream print and TV journalism.
There just isn't any money in liberal talk radio. There's so much of it in conservative talk radio that it's made a fortune not only for Rush Limbaugh, but for Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, and a score of others.

I like when Rush and Ann do their thing. Its not my brand but there are people like that format. The family guy crowd isnt the same as the NPR crowd but they all get the same basic talking points from their preferred genre/media medium. Diversity of genre/med medium is one of the largest conservative failings today. Red eye is one of the few to expand into conservative entertainment. We need more like that some less.
After a big game some people want to hear the coachs insights, some the players feelings, others the cheerleaders to escalate their emotions, others a fair unbiased commentator. If you want more people on your side, you have to cater to more peoples interests. Its not what you want.... its the consumer. (Joe Dirt)

I'm not sure what you are saying above, but oh well. I would make one more point though - does anyone honestly believe that Politico would print a story like that about say Romney, for instance, without having evidence to back it up? Without having sources they could name publicly?
But, since the story is just about a black man - a conservative black man no less, well then it's OK to print it without sources. Seriously?

I do, yes, when seen in the light of the pattern Coulter cites. It's quite plausible to state that even with a Republican the Establishment media would not want to push a claim that is self-evidently baseless. It's certainly nowhere near conclusive evidence, however, and I think that's what bothers Ace, et. al.

Posted by: Otis Criblecoblis at November 01, 2011 01:59 PM (fjoLg)
There's not a lot of "reason and logic" on display.
The accusations themselves ARE newsworthy. I know you're doing conclusion-first reasoning and want to believe they're not, but they are.
You seem to be claiming that Politico has to collect all the evidence to prove the matter of the claim before printing the accusation.
Wrong. The accusation itself, the fact that it was filed against him, is a story in and of itself.
If you're claiming that, were you running a newspaer, you wouldn't run that story -- about the accusation itself -- against a liberal, you're either lying to yourself or you are employing some bizarre standard of newsworthiness you'll have to explain.
______________________
Ok, I have to agree with you about the newsworthiness aspect, but were I the reporter in this case, I would have to personally interview the women involved and make my own judgements as to their credibility.
However, as to the racism aspect, given the points Dagny made above, I would have to agree that were the person in question a white man, the criteria for publishing a story like this would have been much higher.
Posted by: Racist, Right-Wing Terrorist in Midwest...Or Tea Party Member for Short at November 01, 2011 01:59 PM (F1JEL)
Um, yes, I do think they would. And for the last time, THEY HAVE SOURCES. They met the women, know their names, and presented their names to Cain as well. They merely declined to name them in the story -- and what purpose would that serve anyway, other than to allow people like you to start attacking them in the worst way possible?
Once again: this story is the farthest thing possible from "unsourced." It's EXHAUSTIVELY sourced: not only have they contacted the two women in question (who refused to talk because of their NDAs), they examined the original settlement documents, attempted to get Cain to give a statement for 10 days, etc. etc. You are living in fantasy la-la land if you think this was anything other than textbook journalism in terms of methodology and sourcing.
Posted by: Jeff B. at November 01, 2011 02:00 PM (hIWe1)
Not that I am a Cain guy, but she shouldn't have taken the money. If she was at the level of assistant something to the CEO. She wasn't exactly a single mom diner waitress where she was more or less forced into accepting the money. Being between 10k-99k very well might not have even been more then a month or two's pay. Also I think their might be more of these coming and at least one of them will have enough teeth for the fraudstreammedia to go all chupacabra with it.
Like I say everyday here, I don't think Cain will make a good president but let conservatives decide when/if to toss him overboard... still several eternities (in political time) between now and the nominations. That is why I am not real freaked out about this. Worst case scenario, conservatives get their turn at putting up a McCain, Dole, Poppa Bush. (electoral turd) Lets be honest the only two chosen by conservatives were Reagan and W. Bush. So both 2 termers and respectable track record, which is still better then the Republican establishment for both wins, reelections, and success as president.

Well, I'm 49 and grew up outside DC and my dad worked 24/7 during the race riots of the late 60s, but I guess I'm not "well read."
Point to me phraseology or context that Politico or the subsequent media outlets used that taps into this "black men are scary rapists," that's all I'm asking.
It's like any group that has a history (even extending into the present) of having been discriminated against. The onus is still on them to prove the affront.
Posted by: Y-not at November 01, 2011 02:00 PM (5H6zj)
Ann's other point she made several times was about Republicans having to protect the black man from Democrats. They were slow on civil rights, and still attack blacks that leave "their plantation".
Politico didn't seem to bring up that such small settlements may well indicate this was a nuisance suit. And they won't tell if their source was a rival campaign, whether Perry or even Democrats. They are not fair and balanced of course ... but while this was a story, it seemed coordinated for max impact against Cain.

Well she also had absolutely no reason to think she would be the subject of major controversy in a Presidential campaign, either. I mean, she's got a point. Herman Cain was just another businessman back in the day.
The fact is, if she wants to tell her side of the story, it's going to get out one way or another. It's only a matter of time now.

I read that the one woman about whom we have specifics was a mid-level writer/editorial person, not his admin.
Here's the problem. If you are a professional woman and you have this sort of accusation to level you are pretty much screwed.
If you pursue it informally (talking with the principal party, of course, but also to non-HR manager types and colleagues), you will likely lose the political battle, assuming the person you're complaining about is senior to you. There will be whisper campaigns against you, you'll develop a reputation for being "sensitive," etc.
If you pursue it via your company's HR department, you have to realize that their primary motivation is to PROTECT THE COMPANY. They may be legally obligated to tell you what your rights are and file the paperwork, but it's clear who has the upper hand. If they find against you, you're screwed. If they find for you, you are still permanently damaged at that company. The only way you're safe is if there are several women who have similar complaints who are all willing to make the complaints.
Your third possibility, assuming you are good at your job and would like to have a shot at continuing your career elsewhere, is to do what she seems to have done and leave the company with a severance and as few people knowing what happened as is humanly possible so you have a shot at getting decent references.
I'm speaking from experience here.
So although I am totally sympathetic to the frustrations people feel about false charges or all the bullshit "training" we have to go through, I would be hesitant to jump to the assumption that the women in question must have been gold-diggers and that Cain must have been innocent as a lamb.
I also have to say that in my direct experience, people either "get it" (ie: understand what the issues are that lead to a complaint) or they don't, irrespective of your gender, your politics, or even your cultural heritage. So I don't see this as a political issue except insofar as liberal politicians have tried to latch onto this for their own gain.

Well... the inconsistency of how they choose what to cover, how much to cover it, and when to do so is. The story its self is news, but... then so was Clinton's affairs, and Obama's accused affairs, and so was Edwards. Notice any difference in the coverage?
There's the bias. And race comes in here: Cain is a black guy - really black, not halfrican American. He'd destroy the "vote for Obama or you're in the Klan" tilt, and he'd give blacks a choice which makes them start thinking about policy and what they get from a president, economics and so on.
If you don't think that is looming large to the legacy media, you're pretty gullible.
