Any Recent Obama Converts? [ArthurK]
— Open Blogger

Had a chat with a friend yesterday who asked an odd question. He wanted to know if I knew anybody who didn't support Obama in 2008 but who does support him for 2012.

Well, I don't. But he wanted me to go public with the question. And I think it's a good question.

Do You Know Anybody Who Voted Against Obama in 2008 But Has Been Converted and Will Vote For Him in 2012?

It's not likely that readers of this blog will be among the converts. But the Army of Morons know all sorts of people. Is there ANYBODY who thinks, "Hey, I didn't think much of this chap but now that I see what he's done - I want 4 more years of it"?

I know lots of disgruntled Obama voters (here in Boulder) who are centrists, but they are so ideologically insecure, that once a Republican name and face is front and center as the potential president (and starts getting savaged by the media), they will run back to Obama instead of being a "troglodyte" republican voter.

29 I don't understand the harsh tone so many of you are taking here. Being President is a really hard job and it's not Obama's fault that he was handed the worst economy in 300 years and that 1/2 of 1/3 of the government is filled with terrorists trying to bring him down. We should all get together civilly and hope for him to succeed like good patriots.

35 Do You Know Anybody Who Voted Against Obama in 2008 But Has Been Converted and Will Vote For Him in 2012?

I don't know anyone who fits that exact description.

The closest I know is an old family friend who lives and works in the DC metro area who had been a registered Republican for years who switched in 2008.  I'm not sure if he switched before or after Obama got elected.  I *think* he voted in the GOP primary.

His wife is a flaming fruit-bat lib, but he had described himself as a fiscal conservative (but social lib).  He said that McCain-Palin (I think particularly Palin) pushed him over the edge to registering Democrat.  I saw him a few months ago and he was still supporting Obama.

The ironic thing (to me) is he's a real estate columnist.  How you could be a nationally-syndicated real estate columnist and not blame the Democrats for the housing crisis is beyond me.

62 There might be a few Hillary supporters who were too disgusted by the thuggish tactics that Obama used in the states with caucuses to vote for him in 2008, who will vote for him in 2012 because time heals all wounds.

But I don't know any.

Most of the first-time Obama voters in '12 will be 18 to 21 year olds who were too young in 2008.  And I bet he won't do as well in that demographic as he did in '08 -- there are one hell of a lot of 21 year olds out there who have yet to find their first job.

He really had only one job to do to ensure his reelection, and that was to drive unemployment back down to less than six percent.  That he didn't even understand why that was imperative shows that he's beyond hopeless.

Which is stupid, yes, but a big part of her rationale was the fact that McCain would have been almost as disastrously liberal as Obama, but McCain would have tarnished the Republican brand for a generation.   Of course, I expect her to come up with some other excuse why she has to vote for Obama in '12; but Meade, no way in hell.

Well...I know a brother in law and his hideous radical commune loving wife, who did not vote for the President in the last election, but...think that he and the wife will not only vote for him next time, they are joining some sort of cause to relocate to Wisconsin, specifically to Madison.

And there, they plan to join a commune.

What is worse was her bragging about possibly getting a part-time job at a bakery for...$500 a month! When I heard that, I let her know that it amounted to $6.25/hour and most likely had no benefits (less than 26 hrs/week).

She still did not get it.

I know it probably does not pass the sniff test of non-voter/now supporter test, but I thought everyone may want to know about nuts who do nothing and now are active in the "movement", for whatever that is...

Most of the first-time Obama voters in '12 will be 18 to 21 year olds who were too young in 2008.  And I bet he won't do as well in that demographic as he did in '08 -- there are one hell of a lot of 21 year olds out there who have yet to find their first job.

Yeah, that damn unemployment thing is going to be a bitch to overcome this next campaign.  But as a wacked out leftist little bitch told me once:  Fuck you, Obama is awesome.

150 I know people whose conditioned fight! response to anything even rumored to be Republican-related has been greatly intensified since '08, to the point where their everyday life is a constant metaphorical vote against all things non-Democratic, and so they're probably more likely to vote-vote too.

But I'm in a state Obama's taking by ten if he runs against God, so those people doesn't count.

But but, Obama doesn't need any converts. He won, and he has no legitimate competition (as of now).

And but but but, converts are an insignificant fraction of any vote. Non-habitual voters who either show up on fleeting enthusiasm or stay home because fuck-all-this are going to decide this one. Obama's losing a lot of those (as of now), but he has a lot to lose.

And no one else wants them (as of now), so... So.

Does anyone think that David Brooks would even have to make the 'switch' in 2012? Puhlease.

David Brooks rides the wave wherever it takes him. In the 1980s he was a free market reaganite, in the 1990s supported clinton, in the 2000s he supported Bush(until he became unpopular) and in 2008 he supported Obama.

He's like a weathervain.

That said, if my dream of getting play the real life version of Fallout and then getting to meet Jesus as the endgame is going to happen while I am still young enough to enjoy it then Obama probably needs to be reelected.

I say "probably" because events are already in motion regardless of who gets elected, with what has transpired in the middle east over the last 18 months, dwarfs Carters Iran mess.  In less then a decade Israel will surrounded by a nuclear armed radical Islamist people (no western funded governments to restrain them)  that outnumber Israelis hundreds to one.  Somewhere between there the Anti-Christ shows up and creates a brief period of "false peace."

I know one (an elderly aunt) who was browbeaten into voting for him by her kids. She definitely won't. But she is going into assisted living so I don't know if she'll get to vote at all.

My liberal-rich-educated elite godmother sounds like she's considering voting for someone else.  She asked a lot of questions about Huntsman, but I think/hope I put her off that idea.  She would never vote for a really blatantly out there "social conservative," but Rick Perry's "states rights" approach might be what she'd need to ignore that stuff and vote for him.  I gotta start working on her on that.

Still, it warmed my little black bean heart when one of my running bff's (a pretty liberal demotard who was a big fan of Ohaha in 200 was bitching about having to switch one of her kids off her husband's healthcare plan (they have 2) and putting him on hers because of "that stupid Obamacare shit" come 2013.   (It will be better for them financially to have one kid on each plan instead of both on one).  I had a smile on my face the rest of the afternoon.

They also just refi'd to a jumbo arm loan (for 2 houses).  I am sure the poop will hit the fan with them when the interest rates go up precipitously.  I told her I thought that was a risky thing to do, but it was the only way they could get financing.

263 Darcy, I fully expect to read a "How Romney lost me" post on Althouse in about 15 months.

But Meade?  No way in hell.  I understand what you're saying about his supporting her decision, in hind sight; and I don't agree.  But I can see the rationality of it.  We're just damned lucky that Ted Kennedy died when he did, and that they didn't win one or two more senators, or they could have pushed through crap-and-tax, card check, everything.

But whether it was  luck or foresight, we're not in a post-apocalyptic hell, at least not yet; and things are looking pretty good for 2012 and maybe 2016.  Had McCain won...who knows.  The pendulum must be allowed to swing every once in a while, or next time we'll end up with President Bill Ayers.

I think you have to have been reading Meade's comments for the last 5 or 6 years -- he once commented there much more than he does now.  Dude's to the right of Trooper York.

She left the Republican party (after a lifelong association) just a couple of months ago because they have been fiscally irresponsible, and she actually thinks that health care is a right and that Obamacare is a Good Thing. She argues for *more* statism and stimulus spending, citing FDR and Krugman. It's fascinating, watching someone who once had a working brain descend into lunacy. I can see the Dem talking points filtering into her thinking, and she's biting *hard* on the class warfare propaganda. Crazy things happen when your baseline assumptions about the role of government change.

The comments here are often entertaining, but they're frequently peppered with damned ugly comments like Jeff's.  And comedy is hard, I get that, you can't make mayo without breaking eggs; but he wasn't even trying for comedy there, it was just an ugly, stupid string of insults.

From time to time, the commenters here do say stuff that is stupid (myself included).  That's why we are called morons.  And we are definitely not a cookie cutter group--people feel free to speak exactly what is on their mind instead of kow-towing to a bunch of talking points or politically correct b.s.  It's what makes this blog so unique and fun.  You can't take some of the stuff said too seriously.  And you can't let yourself be easily offended.

This blog is full of people who are waaay smarter than me, funnier than me, and raunchier than me, and that is why I love coming here.  (We also have a few moby's and trolls so we do get the occasional stupid too).  One thing you should know, though, that when the chips are down, and there is someone in pain, the morons and moronettes on this blog will go to the mat for you.

We've had one person actively contemplate suicide while commenting on this blog, and some really amazing people came immediately to his aid.  We've had several deaths (both commenters and family members of commenters) and several births.  AoSHQ peeps have been incredibly supportive and caring during good and bad times.  It makes me proud to be associated with this amazing, amazing blog.

278 my mom, a lifelong libtard voted for mccain because:

my grandma, another lifelong libtard said she couldn't vote for obama because he's black. (meaning the only racist thing i've ever heard about obama came from a lifelong democrat). my grandma got sick and unaware of her surroundings, so my mom used my grandma's absentee ballot to vote for obama without her knowing. when grandma slipped into a coma, mom felt guilty and told God she'd vote for mccain with her own vote (swearing me to secrecy lest her husband be pissed at her) if He would heal grandma. grandma died and mom swore to vote for the dems from then on no matter what because God had told her to by taking grandma home. or something.

so to answer the question: do i know anyone who didn't vote for obama in 2008 that will vote for him in 2012? kind of.

282 Obviously there is a whole cohort of probable Democrat-by-demographic young persons entering into voting age in 2012 who will probably pull the lever for Obama.   But those are just "new Democrats" not individuals whose opinion about Obama has changed.

While there will inevitably be a FEW individuals who voted for McCain in 2008 who will pull the lever for Obama in 2012, that's really the wrong question.

Obama (unfortunately) carried 2008 so convincingly, that he doesn't really need to convert former Republican voters to win in 2012.

The question is, how many people who voted for him in 2008 are so utterly disgusted by him now that they'll vote Republican.

And the better question is, how many of those people are in Florida, Ohio, and other key swing states.

I think the answer is "a lot".

My gf voted for Obama (I didn't know her at the time) and will vote for a twinkie over him come next year.

Obama seems to be losing voters which is unusual for a President who seeks re-election. The rule of History is that a incumbent President is re-elected w/ converts and states he lost the last time around. The only times I believe an incumbent won re-election while losing voters and states he won  from the last election was Madison in 1812, Wilson in 1916, and FDR in 1940

I don't know anyone who fits that exact description.

The closest I know is a friend who lives and works in Pensacola area who had been a registered Republican for years who switched in 2008.  I'm sure he switched before Obama got elected.  Though I *think* he voted in the GOP primary.

His wife is as anti-Obama as they come, and he had described himself as a fiscal conservative (but social lib).  He said that McCain-Palin (I think particularly Palin) pushed him over the edge to registering Democrat.  I saw him a few months ago and he was still supporting Obama.

The ironic thing (to me) is he's a retired Navy Chief.  How you could be a retired military and not blame the Democrats for the (cough Chuck Shumer cough) economy tanking and retired military not receiving a COLA in the last two years?

338 Me, because no one that the GOP is running or likely to run in 2012 is any good and because, if there's a chance that the GOP will have both the Senate and House in 2012, you want a Dem in the WH to have divided government with blockage potential.

339 That is why the bucktoothed dipshit in chief doesn't stand a chance of reelection. He's lost massive amounts of the passive support that elected his worthless ass the first time around and he has picked up no one to make up for it.

340 Should be "the Army of Morons knows." The relevant noun is "Army." But no, I don't know anyone who now wants Obama. Don't think any rational person would make that switch.

341 I have a new, fun driving game. Whenever I see an Obama 2008 bumper sticker, I point my finger (no, not that one, moron), cover my mouth, and laugh and laugh. You should see them pointing back (yes, that finger). Ah, good times!!!!

344 I don't talk to the guys who voted for it in 2008.  They displayed a degree of cognizant dissonance that just wasn't worth drinking with anymore.

346 335 Do You Know Anybody Who Voted Against Obama in 2008 But Has Been Converted and Will Vote For Him in 2012?

Charles Johnson.

I'm quite certain he did not vote for McCain/Palin. He'd already gone loony by then.

350 The only group that I can imagine didn't vote for Barack Black Jesus Ocarter in 2008 but will in 2012 is..... those who just turned 18.

Now if we could only raise the minimum voting age to 30 (and while we're at it, add a maximum age of 70) maybe we'd have some good presidents again.  I say that as a 40-ish male who voted for Democrats up to and including.... John Kerry.  Ugh.

351 Jeff at 336:  Really?  That's it?  That's the legendary rhetorical smackdown?

Oh, burrrn.

"... wrapped in a smug layer of intellectually superior bitchery."

Do you know why you might perceive it thus, Jeffy?  Because maybe, just maybe, she actually is intellectually superior to you.  I know that's hard to imagine, because she's just a professor of law at one of the more prominent law schools in the country, and you're...whatever the hell you are, leader of the IT squirrel brigade, I guess.  Plus she's a woman, or as you call them, a bitch, ginch, or flabby piece of hippo shit.  Because that's how you roll, all intellectual and shit.

"PENIS MOOD: ASLEEP."

See, Jeffy, some of us use the internet for things other than fevered masturbation to tentacle porn.  Maybe you'll understand when all your pubes come in, son.

"Now why don't you run back over there and hump her hamhock, muttface, before you get your shit pushed in."

Oh noes, an internet tough guy.  And one that gets debriefed by IT squirrels.  I'm done for now.  I've heard about you internet tough guys.  In between MMA fights and mayhem arraignments, you guys all comment on political blogs and get really bad-ass debriefings from the IT department.  I don't know whether I should shit or go blind.

One question, though:  By "get your shit pushed in," you're actually making a homosexual pass at me, aren't you?  You're offering to compact the feces in my colon with your PENIS MOOD:WIDE AWAKE?  See, that gay stuff, that doesn't really fit in with the internet tough guy pose.  I respect your lifestyle choices and all, and to each his own, but it just doesn't seem very intimidating.  You might want to work on that, Jeff.

I suspect that Obama will pick up a few voters in the "Pre-Senile" block.  These are seniors who believed him when he intimated that the GOP was going to cut off their Social Security checks.  Many of these voted for McCain, back when they had functional fore-brain neurons.

Also, there will be long-term unemployed who think that the safest way to keep getting the government checks is with continued Democrat rule.  After all, there might be something to this "funemployment" gig.

Well there's Charles Johnson. And then there's, um, uh... hmmmm.... Ummmmmm..... Uhhhhh.... maybe possibly, uhhhhh... David Frum? Just guessing, I really have nothing to base that on other than the fact he doesn't like the tea party.

354 For me, it depends on who the nominee is. Santorum or Paul might cause me to vote for Obama, but more likely than not, I'd just stay home. In a more realistic scenario, if Palin, Bachmann or Cain get it, I'll probably stay home too. I'm in Texas so I can afford to be ambivalent if the GOP nominates a shitty candidate.

355 Few holdouts at the VFW. But they hate facts and statistics. Why do they get upset when I state them? I even had pictures and graphs. All three of them got mad and said bad things. I'm confused!!!!

356 If Libya wasn't such a shitshow, national security/foreign affairs types who give a fuck-all about domestic issues (ie, lots of folks in the military) might think Obama isn't a bad deal in 2012.  A lot of them were McCain voters in '08. Iraq is shaky, but OK. Afghanistan probably could easily have been handled worse. UBL's dead. KSM will get a military commission. Obama's been steady in those areas. But Libya is a shitshow.  And it looks like Obama's only idea about deficit reduction is to gut the Perntagon.  So...unless a complete fool is at the top of the GOP ticket, tough to see even someone who has been pleasantly surprised by Obama in some national security areas voting for him in '12.

358 I anticipate that there will be quite a few McCain voters in Chicago and some other big blue cities who have died between now and then who will be "converted" and vote for Obama the next time around.

360 You may not be able to find "Obama converts" now, but just wait until summer and fall of 2012. Then we will see lots of comments on blogs from people who voted for McCain-Palin in 2008 but who are appalled by whoever the Republican nominee is and as a result feel that it necessary to change their vote to Obama.

Nohype (#379):  You're partially right. There WILL be a lot of coment on blogs from people who say they voted for McCain in '08 but can't support the current nominee because the GOP has been taken over by tea bagging extremists yada yada. The thing is, those people will be LIARS -- lefties posing as "concerned" conservatives and/or RINOS who abandoned the ticket in 2008.

They'll also be a fair amount of commentary from the usual RINO talking heads about the "extreme" GOP nominee in 2012 and how much worse he was from the more reasonable John McCain -- all of whom (with the exception of David Frum) voted for The Whine in 2008. I've already got my tar and feathers ready for the first one to publish that drivel.

"I anticipate that there will be quite a few McCain voters in Chicago and some other big blue cities who have died between now and then who will be "converted" and vote for Obama the next time around."

Aint that the goddamn truth.

Actually, though, I hope that's true. That would mean Obama's failure as a President is so obvious that he's forced to resort to voter fraud to win the dark blue states, which would mean the light blue states like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, etc. would all be lost causes.
