Okay all you morons, put me some knowledge here. I have several hundred dollars' worth of matured US savings bonds (thank God for grandmothers). I've decided to use them to fund my Crash Stash (dry food, water filters, shotgun shells, etc.) and put the rest into junk silver for easy bartering. The question is, should I buy silver now or do you moron savants think it's about to drop some?

Why silver?
Because gold is so valuable now, that easily barter-able quantities are so small that keeping track or accurately weighing them is difficult. Whereas an ounce of silver is easy to weigh and trade and has reasonable value.

The strong dependence on internal properties indicates that emission of CO2 from natural sources, which accounts for 96 per cent of its overall emission, plays a major role in observed changes of CO2. Independent of human emission, this contribution to atmospheric carbon dioxide is only marginally predictable and not controllable.
So 96% comes from “natural sources” like farting and belching wild animals !! .. and the EPA wants to spend billions if not trillions of dollars to control the other 4% ?!?
OMG !!
Perhaps our money would be better spent if we had EPA employees run around on city freeways trying to slow down traffic .. sure we might lose a few to traffic accidents, but we should slow down 96% of them, the larger portion (and stop the remainder completely).

In Argentina, after their economy collapsed, people used gold chains (18 or 24 karat; no 14 karat). You'd go into a store and sell enough gold to buy just the items you wanted, breaking off links with a heavy pocket knife. Then you'd run out and buy food or whatever immediately, before your currency lost any (more) value.
In a real SHTF economy, the merchant would probably have a scale and you'd pay directly in gold chain segments. This would probably work for silver chain, too, but I haven't read any references to that.

Thanks for the tip about the meal moths- I have never heard about them before. Mrs. Nighthawk and I recently purchased a vacuum sealer and it works very well for dry goods and other items such as veggies and meat for freezing.
As you point out freezers are a problem if the power goes out. I think that home canning is the best way to get around that. Fortunately Mrs. Nighthawk grew up on a farm and can do that in her sleep. I'm still learning. The Ball "Blue Book" is a must-have resource on that IMHO.

Not quite true. While it's certainly not recommended, 5.56 will work in most commercial .223s.
HOWEVER, a steady diet of 5.56 will cause significant throat erosion in a .223, due to the shorter leade of the commercial chamber.
Still, your concluding recommendation is good advice.
