Okay all you morons, put me some knowledge here. I have several hundred dollars' worth of matured US savings bonds (thank God for grandmothers). I've decided to use them to fund my Crash Stash (dry food, water filters, shotgun shells, etc.) and put the rest into junk silver for easy bartering. The question is, should I buy silver now or do you moron savants think it's about to drop some?

Why silver?

Because gold is so valuable now, that easily barter-able quantities are so small that keeping track or accurately weighing them is difficult. Whereas an ounce of silver is easy to weigh and trade and has reasonable value.

The strong dependence on internal properties indicates that emission of CO2 from natural sources, which accounts for 96 per cent of its overall emission, plays a major role in observed changes of CO2. Independent of human emission, this contribution to atmospheric carbon dioxide is only marginally predictable and not controllable.

So 96% comes from “natural sources” like farting and belching wild animals !! .. and the EPA wants to spend billions if not trillions of dollars to control the other 4% ?!?

OMG !!

Perhaps our money would be better spent if we had EPA employees run around on city freeways trying to slow down traffic .. sure we might lose a few to traffic accidents, but we should slow down 96% of them, the larger portion (and stop the remainder completely).

114 My wife and I were wondering how you would barter with a Oz gold piece unless the item you wish to acquire was worth the same as gold.

Posted by: Velvet Ambition at August 05, 2011 12:05 PM (0OJd9)

In Argentina, after their economy collapsed, people used gold chains (18 or 24 karat; no 14 karat). You'd go into a store and sell enough gold to buy just the items you wanted, breaking off links with a heavy pocket knife. Then you'd run out and buy food or whatever immediately, before your currency lost any (more) value.

In a real SHTF economy, the merchant would probably have a scale and you'd pay directly in gold chain segments. This would probably work for silver chain, too, but I haven't read any references to that.

Call me clueless, but methinks there are bigger games afoot. Has this bank completely forgotten what it means to be a "Bank"?

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that the administration has been bitching and moaning about all that big, dirty money sitting around drawing interest. Right?

120 And I have to tell you, I say this to you politely. The media in America has a bigger responsibility than itÂ’s exercising today. The media has got to to begin to not give equal time or equal balance to an absolutely absurd notion just because somebody asserts it or simply because somebody says something which everybody knows is not factual.

It doesnÂ’t deserve the same credit as a legitimate idea about what you do. And the problem is everything is put into this tit-for-tat equal battle and America is losing any sense of whatÂ’s real, of whoÂ’s accountable, of who is not accountable, of whoÂ’s real, who isnÂ’t, whoÂ’s serious, who isnÂ’t?

137 As you know, government has been protecting us from a rash of delinquents selling lemonade from lemonade stands lately.  The is a great quote from the chief of police from the latest lemonade stand bust.  “We were not aware of how the lemonade was made, who made the lemonade, of what the lemonade was made with.”

Threat eliminated.  It's Miller time.

Extra credit.  Outline the chief's statement, particularly the phrase "of what the lemonade was made with."

139 For doomsday purposes, I'd steer away from the silver and just stick to basic emergency living supplies, in quantities large enough to be able to swap for other stuff you need. Canned soup is a fantastic investment for under $2 a can, also canned beans, chili, salmon, tuna, etc. I wouldn't overdo it, but at least a few weeks worth of canned goods is something you'll never regret having, and it transports well. I have two warnings for food storage: 1. If you don't have a way to keep a freezer going during an extended power outage, don't overdo your frozen storage. One of the most hideous sights and smells I've ever encountered was a post-outage freezer full of meat. That was probably hundreds of dollars lost in rotted meat, plus a very nasty disposal job. 2. Beware the meal moths. This wily insect will destroy your stores of dry goods, leaving behind eggs, larvae, and webbing (if you see wisps of cobweb stuff in food containers, that's our friend the meal moth). It is a very, very sad thing to have to empty out an entire kitchen's worth of flour and mixes. The meal moths worm their way right under flaps of boxes and can labels to lay their eggs. Ever since an infestation over 10 years ago, I've become a fanatical user of large ziploc bags and airtight canisters. I also keep whole grain flours in the freezer.

Thanks for the tip about the meal moths- I have never heard about them before.  Mrs. Nighthawk and I recently purchased a vacuum sealer and it works very well for dry goods and other items such as veggies and meat for freezing.

As you point out freezers are a problem if the power goes out.  I think that home canning is the best way to get around that.  Fortunately Mrs. Nighthawk grew up on a farm and can do that in her sleep.  I'm still learning.  The Ball "Blue Book" is a must-have resource on that IMHO.

149 "Amy P- Somebody in the other thread recommended Honeyville freeze-dried products. They're apparently packaged specifically for long-term storage. You ever checked into those?" Not specifically. I know there are some pretty good freeze dried meals for the backpacking market. It might be good to keep a balance of freeze dried and canned stuff since getting enough clean water is also a concern for emergencies. The freeze-dried stuff is so light, that it really is a very attractive product. I haven't yet done all the stuff that I probably ought to. For one thing, how to heat this stuff? My parents have a wood stove, which is all kinds of handy during their frequent winter outages, because you can heat up whatever you like by just sticking a pot on top of the hot wood stove, not to mention the heating.

Not quite true. While it's certainly not recommended, 5.56 will work in most commercial .223s.

HOWEVER, a steady diet of 5.56 will cause significant throat erosion in a .223, due to the shorter leade of the commercial chamber.

Still, your concluding recommendation is good advice.
