— Dave in Texas Hey, how about a tea partier shoutin and denouncing Perry in New Hampshire over a border fence?
It's an odd line of attack really, shoving into the right rather than the left. Which is apparently the only opening.
Speaking to hundreds of Granite State voters at a private reception, the Texas governor was asked whether he supported a fence along the Mexican border.
“No, I don’t support a fence on the border,” he said. “The fact is, it’s 1,200 miles from Brownsville to El Paso. Two things: How long you think it would take to build that? And then if you build a 30-foot wall from El Paso to Brownsville, the 35-foot ladder business gets real good.”
The answer produced an angry shout from at least one audience member.
Except someone who says he was there doubts the shout.
And the AP declined to provide the rest of his response in the report.
Instead, Perry said he supported “strategic fencing” and National Guard troops to prevent illegal immigration and violence from Mexican drug cartels.
Perry certainly has to shore up his positioning on immigration. But having watched it for 12 years, I can tell you it's consistent. He's been driving down on violent crime, and demanding federal action to protect citizens.
It isn't as hard as I'd like, but it's aimed at my biggest concern.

Everyone I talk to the answer is the same, "I love Rick Perry but he may be too far right to win." My response, "When we run someone right instead of liberal-lite, he wins." Their response, "Hmmmm, maybe you're right."
Keep spreadin' the word.

Sorry, but his immigration stance is tepid at best. If he gets elected it will be George Bush Jr. all over again. Somewhat better than now, but still no substantive results. And his statement about the length of the fence and ladders just shows how unserious he is.
He had a chance with the latest Texas legislature session to show some leadership on the issue and results. Instead he let big local businesses shoot down some needed changes.
Perry is not the guy.

Make everyones Social Security Card a tamper proof card like a credit card and make all employers slide it through a card reader that is connected to a database of valid social security numbers. Jail the employers if they don't do it.
All the illegals would self deport because they coudn't work.

Well, that beats the pants off of SCofMF all over again. And, Ace had a post up, I dunno, within the last few weeks, about how we need someone who can BEAT OBAMA and it's time to sacrifice deep for broad. Ace said it better, but that's the gist and I could not agree more wholeheartedly.

There's no need to fence every damn inch of the border if the most common crossing areas _are_ fenced and patrolled, if the children of illegal aliens born in the US are not automatically citizens, if illegal aliens cannot receive aid beyond emergency medical care, and if businesses that hire illegal aliens are penalized.
No need to deport many, either. Once the gravy spigot's turned off, most will self-deport, the rest can be deported, and we can go back to being a sovereign country that has control over its lawful immigration.
If Mexico's such a terrible place, let the Mexicans fix it.

Bullis Gap leaps to mind.
Then take a good look at the Mexican side. No towns, no roads, nada.
There is a reason nothing is out there in lots of places.
A fence won't work as a single solution. Perry is right about that.

Perry is the guy.
President Perry. It rolls well off the tongue. He and a Republican controlled Congress are our only hope.
Obamaism must be dismantled ASAP. Then the ground must be burned and salted.
Posted by: BackwardsBoy at September 04, 2011 04:22 PM (d0Tfm)
And which candidate are you shilling for? Mutt Romney, RuPaul, the Divine Sarah? These random, fact-free attacks don't really gain much traction around here.
The fact is, the lefty media -- and the Paulbots, Palinoids, etc., etc. -- always cut Perry's responses short. Any action regarding illegals begins with enforcing the law first. He consistently says so.
What happens after a president finally decides to uphold the laws -- as they are sworn to, but which Dubya and Osama Obama routinely ignore(d) on this issue -- is another matter, and I suspect Perry would be more likely to heed the wishes of voters than make an unpopular move than, say, the arrogant Muttster.
Anyone who thinks Perry is perfect is delusional. But he's looking damn good, and so far strikes me as our best hope for beginning the long process of getting the country straightened out.
And he's not a stuttering clusterf*** of a miserable failure.

How good a candidate is Gov. Perry on these issues? He stinks. He is the worst of the Republicans and here are 10 reasons why:
1. Open Borders: Former Congressman Tom Tancredo, in a devastating article that appeared in Politico on August 11, 2011, notes that Gov. Perry gave a 2001 speech in Mexico, no less, saying he supported completely open borders, in which he called for the “free flow of individuals between these two countries who want to work and want to be an asset to our country and to Mexico.” Apparently, there can never be too much immigration from Mexico for Gov. Perry.
2. Border Fence: If you’re for open borders, you don’t want a border fence. The AP reported that in the same 2001 speech in Mexico, Gov. Perry says, “But the idea that you’re going to build a 1,200 mile wall … is idiocy. It absolutely would not work.”
3. An Arizona-style Immigration Law for Texas: Gov. Perry is against interior enforcement of our immigration laws. During the debate over Arizona’s anti-illegal immigration SB 1070, he opposed enacting something similar in his state, saying, “It would not be the right direction for Texas.”
4. Amnesty: Gov. Perry said Congress didn’t have the “maturity” to reform our immigration laws, by which he meant granting amnesty. The “Washington Watcher” at Vdare.com notes Gov. Perry has called for a “guest worker program that takes undocumented workers off the black market and legitimizes their economic contributions without providing them with citizenship status.” In other words, at a time when a record number of Americans are out of work, Gov. Perry’s job-creation plan is to make it easier for foreigners to take more of our jobs.
5. Birthright Citizenship: An article at Youth for Western Civilization’s blog notes that Gov. Perry “supports granting citizenship to children of illegal aliens, and opposes legislation to change the current policy which grants citizenship to any child of an illegal alien.” According to the Washington Post, he has said any change of our current birthright citizenship policies would be “unconstitutional.”
For generations, politicians were afraid to touch the question of birthright citizenship, but thanks to Tea Party groups, that is starting to change. By means of a deliberate misinterpretation of the 14th Amendment, any pregnant woman who manages “to fly, crawl or flop across our borders” as Jared Taylor once put it, can give birth to an American citizen. Professor Lino Graglia of the University of Texas has ably refuted this absurd view of the 14th Amendment.
As Mr. PerryÂ’s views become better known among conservative Republicans, they could turn against him. Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann have both spoken out against birthright citizenship.
6. E-Verify: E-Verify is a federal program that lets employers make sure their workers are here legally. Vdare’s “Washington Watcher” notes that when Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson challenged Gov. Perry for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2010, she called for E-Verify for all Texas state employees. Even that was too much for Gov. Rick Perry, who stated: “E-Verify would not make a hill of beans difference when it comes to what’s happening in America today.”
Illegal immigrants who are secretly working for Al Queda or MS-13 could get jobs as state employees, but Gov. Perry is opposed to even the most basic effort to weed them out. Apparently, it doesn’t make a “hill of beans difference” to him.
7. Illegal Aliens as “Undocumented”: The same Youth for Western Civilization article reports that in a talk about his big ideas for Texas school students, he said, “And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers.” (Emphasis added). “Undocumented” is the pro-Amnesty Left’s favorite code word for illegal aliens. Needless to say, that “vision” includes college education, jobs, and everything else. It is easy to foresee a Republican-promoted amnesty of the “undocumented” under a Perry administration, just like the one the last Bush administration served up.
8. In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens: In 2001, Gov. Perry supported and signed the Texas “DREAM Act,” which lets children of illegal aliens pay in-state tuition at Texas universities. It you live in neighboring Arizona, no in-state rates for you; but if your family sneaked illegally into Texas, Gov. Perry wants to give you tuition breaks.
Even the voters of liberal Maryland managed to upend the liberal elites’ goal of passing a “DREAM Act” in that state. So unpopular was the law there, that after a successful petition drive, Maryland voters can now decide its fate themselves in 2012.
9. Bragged About it in Mexico: After he signed the Texas DREAM Act, Gov. Perry went to Mexico to brag about it. According to the Washington Times, he said in Spanish: “Educacion es el futuro, y si se puede.” (Education is the future, and yes we can). Gov. Rick Perry, a supposedly conservative governor from the conservative state of Texas, brags in Mexico about transferring more Texas gringo money to more illegal aliens.
In 2009, Mr. Perry received the “Defender of Jerusalem” award, which is given to public figures who show a commitment to defending Israel and Jerusalem as its capital. “I have long supported the right of a Jewish state to exist in the Middle East,” said the grateful Mr. Perry. He is obviously unconcerned about the rights of a Texan state.

Race42012 features a story that the Bushies are leaning hard on Christie to get in and promising a ready made organization for him.
Who knows?
But if so, it would be a move designed to split the Establishment vote between Christie, Romney and Perry.
The Bushies are now reported to be strongly hoping Palin enters also, closing off Perry's safety valve in the event of a three way Establishment split.
No wonder the Perrykrishnas want that Palin endorsement so badly. If this comes to pass, they're gonna need it!
But about that fellas, I heard there was a speech this weekend...
Posted by: njinfl at September 04, 2011 04:29 PM (M2X9r)
He said he wants strategic fences, which means fencing off the areas where the crossings are, not wasting time and money fencing off places where nobody is crossing. He also wants the National Guard on the border.
He also said his first day in office will be spent dismantling as much of ObamaCare as he can by executive order.
If Perry is not the guy, who is?
For me, the guy is the person the GOP puts up against Obama.

It's way too expensive and it's also hugely ineffective. They come right back. Particularly the worst of 'em. The only way to do it is to enforce employment sanctions and they will self-deport. It happened in Arizona and it is a very easy, clean solution for the rest of the country. Enforce E-Verify, rain down financial hurt on the employers who don't comply, require proof of citizenship for food stamps, section 8, medical assistance except for life-threatening emergencies and, bingo, problem solved.

Fences work very well in highly populated areas with heavy cross-border traffic like San Diego. El Paso would be another prime location. But hundreds of miles of fence along rural borders would cost billions and be easily breached. It would need as much patrolling as unfenced areas to be viable.
That's just reality.

Dave - great post.
Isn't it interesting that msm outlets such as AP can without broad implication, attempt to create dissonance over the fact if a conservative candidate for president is conservative enough. And then in the same breath, write about how out of touch the candidate is for being republican.
This is a game to the mainstream media in which they perform like three card monty. Except they aint' performing in a back alley but in the public domain with clear intention to manipulate that which they cannot stand ------ republican platforms.

1.) Pershing and his entire army didn't stop any illegals from coming in.
2.) He brought back with him undocumented Chinese who were eventually granted citizenship after his venture into Mexico.
However, you know:

Translates into:
"There's nobody out there better than Perry, so no matter what I say you should go ahead and support him."

So, virtual fence.
Buid a fucking real fence. How long would it take? Pick a number. County backward from today by that number. If they had started building it then, when folks were asking for it, it would be done by now.
'They'll just climbs over it!' Then make them climb. If the fence is mostly symbolic, that's OK with me. We could use a symbol that says "This is our land. You will enter it in the light of day, with permission."
I like Perry. But this is big with me. Bigger than his economic record in Texas.

Watching "The Miracle Worker" on TCM. Great movie.
It's incomprehensible to me that Helen Keller, who benefited so greatly from free market capitalism and would have been left to rot in a living death in some Soviet asylum under the best of circumstances, could become a communist. Think back to late 2008, early 2009 and the pure elation and overconfidence that the messiah truly had arrived that the MFM exuded. You couldn't have gotten any single member of the MFM to fathom a set of scenarios where Obama became not only ineffective, but boring and irrelevant.
Yet today, as we approach the hard start of the election season, there is much hand-wringing and despair on the left. Many of them don't even believe he can deliver a simple jobs speech. Really, the smartest, smoothest, most gifted orator of all time has his cheerleaders questioning his ability to even give a basic speech without looking like a waste.
I believe in those early days, they believed they would even be able to play it straight this election. Obama's wondrous works would allow them to simply trumpet his awesomeness and watch him cruise to a 2nd of an eventual 10 terms with none of the usually required heavy lifting. All they had to do was get him elected the 1st time...he was surely the chosen one to deliver the rest.
Now they are reduced to back-peddling, second-guessing, and back-seat driving. All the while lamenting what should have been and gearing up for what will certainly be the most partisan "neutral" election coverage this side of the Kremlin.

Who's your candidate?
Posted by: lu at September 04, 2011 08:57 PM (KXvWm)
Well, apparently a guy who thinks race-baiting and anti-Semitism is a feature not a bug. So, who does that leave?
Posted by: AD at September 04, 2011 05:00 PM (tZyw2)
Incidentally, it wouldn't bother me at all had someone shouted out "NOOOOO".
That's a valid shout.
I'm a bit bothered about the selective reportage. Not hugely, I expect it.
But let's all know what it is.

Hey, bro! Here's the thing: when I can afford it, I can't take the time; when I have the time, I don't have the discretionary funds for the kind of vacation I like (skiing/Rockies/nothing less than a 4-star hotel). But, I did have those almost-2-years of unemployment and, aside from the certainty that I would never work again and was fully boned, I enjoyed the livin' crap outta that.

muse, no you have it exactly. .Which is why we should always ask them "who's your candidate"?
Which of course they dance around. But hey, Huntsman, that's who the real conservatives are gathering around (hahahaha).
Or Charles Martel.
Posted by: Dave in Texas at September 04, 2011 05:07 PM (PjVdx)
Depends, were you around here in '08? This is actually pretty toned down from their previous go-around.
Sure, it seems counter-productive, but I the Paulbots were much worse than this.

*So it's just a claim. By the AP. I trust them implicitly. I'm sure you do too.*
Not at all. But I not so quick to scream Conspiracy. It is completely understandable that someone would call bullshit on Perry's dodge. And hopeful.
I don't think I can recall MSM making shit up to serve a conservative position.

Killing Obamacare dead wouldn't hurt.
Mostly, though, I want rid of Obama, and would really prefer not to have to vote for Romney, who does not strike me as the sort of man who will do these things.

So, Perry then.
I have some issues with the guy, which I already stated here, but you either pick a guy or you're engaging in intellectual masturbation.
Say, he stands by his position. Then what? Argue here who's the better candidate--i.e., more conservative with a chance to beat Obama.
Posted by: AD at September 04, 2011 05:16 PM (tZyw2)
CJ, noting convenient edits by the AP is hardly "conspiracy mongering".
Come on, even without the "yell", the selective quote is purposefully damning.
FeralPaulBot, the first debate is next week. He doesn't have to explain shit to me, I've been watching for 12 years. You go coach Martel honey.

Dave,
First, I LIKE Perry. I don't enjoy throwing cold water on this. But:
1. The AP didn't "edit" anything. It sends the article out and outlets edit. Yahoo News took out the followup line about (sigh) "strategic fencing."
Different versions of AP articles appear in different outlets every day.
2. So one blogger was near Perry and didn't hear it. If he wasn't near the shouter, that could be the problem.
3. Is the theory that the shouter was actually protesting the followup line? That makes even less sense.
I can't believe we might nominate our third candidate in a row who is a sellout on border security. Fuck.

Uhm, I kinda think you're too smart not to get the point of that, without quibbling over "oo killed oo".
>> I can't believe we might nominate our third candidate in a row who is a sellout on border security. Fuck.
And now you lost me.
What is your border security solution? I'm actually not opposed to a guest worker program, actually knowing and documenting who's here doing productive work as opposed to crime.

"Solution" to the lack of border security, how about "secure" the "border"? Start with a fence. Start with more manpower. I don't care if all the smarty pants say it's "hopeless." The symbolism of an unsercured border disrespected at will is devastating. A nation is not a nation without borders, and borders that aren't defended and recognized are not, by definition, borders.
We are a pathetic country in that regard.
That is totally seperate from guest workers, etc. I'm for that too. Let migrants come and go, but documented in and. If you come just to work and have no intention of declaring citizenship, fine. Don't lie. Leave when the work season is up.
Everyone is welcome. Just come in the front door and leave when asked. That's fair, doable platform.

Somebody upthread said 'Blackjack Pershing' I just got back from a two hour trip down memory lane. IMHO Pershing knew exactly how to deal/message/optics our 'moose-limb' 'problem'
Of course back then ROE was more like 'how long do I wait before starting the carnage?'

Damn, does FeralCat get around, or what? Go to any article about Perry and there is FeralCat, posting his same, tired crap gleened from Ron Pauls Daily Paul and the lunatic Alex Jones' website.
But ask him to do anything but give talking points, and the guy disappears.
Now, here is the thing FeralCat, and his minions, will never tell you about:
Texas is bordered by mountains and a river. Going over the mountains with a fence is tough enough (it only took the Chinese hundreds of years) but how do you put a fence in the middle of a damned river? Or do you just exercise eminent domain, which FeralCat bitches about, and take the land from the Texas ranchers who use the river to water their cattle? If you can't put the fence right down the center of the river, do you just give the entire river to the Mexicans? Yeah, that should work out well.
Boots on the ground; enforce existing laws; punish employers who knowing hire illegals; get California to stop giving them welfare checks; and make Sheriff Joe VP.
Posted by: zane at September 04, 2011 08:22 PM (EXFdr)
I don't really give to hoots WHAT he thinks about this particular issue.
BUILD THE F'N FENCE. BUILD IT NOW. Then come talk to me when/if it doesn't work.
I'm beginning to think he's just a more glib and facile liar pol than Mittens. Let's see if he starts flipflopping around in a few months on stuff that he starts catching flak over.

There are some damned good reasons why Perry does not wish for a wall all along the border. He wants fences along populated ares, border patrols with the authority to DO something andthe law to be upheld.
Don't believe Perry cares about illegals. Hell, we have more illegals locked up in Texas than the US government has. Perry even let 'em execute one.
Posted by: Peter at September 04, 2011 11:35 PM (Gv80f)
Seriously. Miles of desert doesn't stop them, but a fence will?
"I'm sorry, Maria, we can't go to America. Wire cutters are too hard to come by."

I will probably end up voting for Rick Perry, but I have no doubt that he is more liberal on immigration than George Bush is.
I also think he says some things in his book that will give him problems.
Such as social security is unconstitutional..well, does he plan on taking that to the Supreme Court? And medicare..he complains about Part D...but he thought Hillary Care was a fine thing.
The problem with Perry is that he has been in office so long he has a record and a book to deal with.
That can be good and that can be bad.

Perry is correct. How could America spend billions on a fence, as nothing more than a symbol (hey wait, a fence would at least be a symbol of something to the illegal alien trying to enter, as well as the liberal traitor comparing us to East Germany, both symbols would be great ways to spread the messages they respectively represent) of our wasted funds and excess, when there are hundreds more potential Solyndras to spend billions on?
This idea America has money to defend its borders with the oldest, best defense (a fence) is absurd, and if you don't live in Texas, then shut the hell up, CAUSE YOU DON'T GET TEXAS JERK.
In Texas, they don't lock their car doors. After all, people start locking their doors and the sales of car lock slim jims just go up... you can't stop it... jerk.
And logisitics don't matter in Texas: making folks go hundreds of miles into the bush with a 40' ladder isn't going to deter anybody from anything ever, and only a jerk would think defending against invaders from invading as opposed to jailing their potential employer (who didn't realize it was their job to enforce the federal government's obligation via the constitution) is gonna work.
NOT. IN. TEXAS.
PUNK.
We need employers thrown in jail, Hell, prison (we'll get those rich bastards) and any rapist or robbing murderer who doesn't want a job to waltz right aside the end of the small, urban fence Perry might scrape some cash together to build.
Posted by: twoslaps at September 05, 2011 05:43 AM (Bo7bD)
Let's ask *all* the candidates about the issue of illegal immigration.
Let's ask Sarah Palin too, whose supporters claim she is a candidate.......even though we are not allowed to ask her the same tough questions that are being asked of the other candidates.
Just because Perry is governor of a border state, why is he being singled out for scrutiny on this subject?......Since when is it a governor's job to seal the border? That is the Federal Government's job.
Building the fence would require the use of Eminent Domain to take miles and miles of private land. Are people okay with that?

-----------
That is simply not true, on both counts.
When have any of the other candidates even been asked a question about illegal immigration? From what I have read, and watched, this issue has only come up after Perry entered the race.
All the other candidates [even Palin] have squishy sound-bite positions on the issue of the border and illegal immigration.......if you can even find anything on their 'positions' on this. At least Perry is against amnesty, which separates him from Bush.
Perry has had this issue forced upon him because he is the governor of Texas..... But it is Federal issue that each of the candidates should be forced to elaborate on.
Posted by: ConservativeMenAreJustHotter at September 05, 2011 07:29 AM (riffu)
I thought we'd learned from Bush that if the candidate sucks on an issue, the only way to get any action on the issue is to hold his feet to the fire on it, relentlessly.
We need more partisans for conservative positions and less partisans for conservative politicians.
Rip Perry when he deserves it. He does on immigration.
Posted by: Emperor of Icecream at September 05, 2011 08:45 AM (epBek)
183:
Are you serious? Do you think the people in Texas want an open border? What a joke. Perry has always been weak on illegal immigration and he has not done anything to enforce the borders. He has gone out of his way to attack others though.
Perry is a candidate of the media. He is bad news.
