Apologies To Rush
— Ace

Readers tell me I read the Rush situation wrong-- that he isn't boosting Trump, not really, and that yesterday he was sharply critical of Trump.

They say he's just attempting to establish that which I think is 93% true -- this kid gloves treatment that has generally been granted to Obama is due for retirement. Obama can and should be hit and hit hard; just like any old routine Chicago machine operator. Which is all he is.

The 7% false stuff is about my doubts about highly-personal stuff working. As I've said before, while it's true that "negative ads work," people also like to believe they're above that, and only respond to "substance." Given a negative ad, then, they to tend to internalize it and hold it against the target, but they also hold it against the person making the attack.

Now, if it's plainly "substantive" in nature, most of that is avoided. (But oddly not all -- the squoosh-middle muddleheads are conflict averse and like policy matters being worked out quietly without their notice or input, too.)

I don't know what exactly Rush has in mind, but harsh attacks will work and are called for, so long as they're on subject matters the public is almost ready to believe, even without the attack. You can't lead public opinion by too much. If the public is almost willing to believe Obama is feckless, indecisive, and weak, then definitely hit the crap out of that.

If they're not willing to believe he's got a hidden anti-American agenda, and wishes, literally, to destroy the country through socialist rot, then by all means don't push that meme. It won't have the effect you want, and will in fact cost you more in lost goodwill and credibility.

This is why Drew and others are telling me my "Release the Transcripts" campaign is a bad idea, I'm guessing. He thinks they are not willing to believe Obama is less than very smart, and further, I'd also guess, that the middle has that Trained Aversion to thinking about anything that might implicate, even indirectly, race and Affirmative Action. Start going down that road and the Trained Aversion kicks in, and they say, "Oh, I don't want to hear about all that."

I can't rule that out. This one is on the edge. I think I'd advise most politicians to stay the hell away from this and let surrogates and pundits lead the charge on this, except few pundits have the cajones to do so.

If I were a Trump political advisor, I'd advise him to stay away from the transcripts stuff. Not because I think he's wrong. No, I think he's probably right. But politically, it will probably backfire against him, and he never will get those transcripts.

If what is suspected is true, Obama will never release those less-than-stellar transcripts. And his buddies at the ultraliberal Ivy universities will guard that secret with their very lives.

But I'm not a Trump advisor and I really do want to see this issue dug into so I'm happy that Trump is pushing it. Maybe some other people, some other pundits who appear on national TV, will get over their stupid reflexive internalized racism and just ask of Obama what they'd ask of any other candidate, especially one sold as a "genius."

I think this inquiry will both hurt Trump and hurt Obama. I am not particularly upset by either prong of that.

But yeah, generally, I'd tell actual candidates to stay off the transcript stuff (well, don't undermine those pushing it, but don't bite too hard on it yourself), but I'd also tell the whole GOP to push the issue.

If you're not running in a competitive election, or you're just a party functionary, why not start asking these questions?

It's not racist to ask if someone claimed to be a genius actually managed a B average.

Why does Obama need so much cover on this issue?

Or, as Captain Kirk asked, "Why does God need a starship?"

4 I'd tell actual candidates to stay off the transcript stuff (well, don't undermine those pushing it, but don't bite too hard on it yourself)

If asked directly:
I can understand why some people might be interested. But I don't need to see them. I'm more into interested in debating his failed policies.

Continued dialog on the same subject. (The reporter who won't give up that bone)

Well I have worked with a lot of very smart, intellectual people, geniuses really, and Obama doesn't strike me as being in that league, so I can understand why some might be interested in his academic background after so much political commentary on his exceptional intelligence and performance. Again though, the policies he has implemented and his lack of leadership as President tell me enough about him to know that America doesn't need, nor can really even financially endure another term of Obama Presidency.

Continued dialog on the same subject. (The reporter really won't give up that bone)

Well I think Americans expect a certain level of transparency when it comes to the President. His grades at Harvard while pursuing a Constitutional law degree can be reasonably seen as relevant and pertinent to his suitability for the office of US President. So yes, since it is reasonable and relevant, I think the President in the interest of transparency should release those transcripts.

Continued dialog on the same subject. (You guess the obvious question)

Why yes, actually I *just* happen to have a copy of mine right here with me. Here you go.

Yeah, collateral damage would be good.  I think people find Trump appealing because he is not afraid of Obama.  He is not afraid of the media.  He doesn't care what the ruling class says.  He has never backed down.  Unfortunately, our side is always compromising and trying to be bipartisan.  They are weak and scared.  Trump has been a breath of fresh air in this regard.  I don't want him to be our candidate, but I am glad he's definitely leaving some bruises and dirt on Teh Annointed Won.

Posted by: runningrn at April 27, 2011 03:59 PM (ihSHD)

19 Uh, Trump isn't going to be the nominee.

Not even close.  No organization, he doesn't seem to be wanting to spend Perot-type money and no constituency.  In Iowa, he'll finish behind Bachmann if he even pulls the trigger on a run.

So I see no problem with anything that he's doing.

No, not now,  But years from now, when Michael Beschloss or some other noted presidential historian puts word to paper (or pixels to a monitor), it will reveal the clear cancer that has eaten away the heart of America.

It won't be the immense deficits and debt that bring down the country, it will be the "birthers".

It's a narrative that can't be left alone. It will be part of the greater meta-narrative that will haunt us all 'till our dying day.

Guess what. Same is going to be true of his college transcripts. He's not going to release them until/unless they become a real political liability. My guess, by the way, isn't that Obama was a D-student. His grades are probably acceptable, though not stellar. I suspect, instead, that his transcript is larded up with touchy-feely liberal arts stuff that, with the benefit of hindsight, probably doesn't look too good. Remember Obama himself said that when in college he liked to hang around the Marxist professors.

75 Trump is attempting to deconstruct Obama one issue at a time, Trump claims to address an issue then intimates something weird about Obama that neither the press nor the elites will question on their own. The GOP can throw up their hands and disavow it. But the press rubs their hands in glee that they can press for more with the intention of humiliating Trump with the public. It backfires because he is largely unvetted.

I am not so sure it would help all that much to go after Obama with stuff like the birth certificate issue. The media went after Bush when he was running for reelection and even though the Democrats pulled all kinds of stuff, he was still reelected. Maybe it was because people already knew him, and telling the American people that Bush was a dummie and a draft dodger and that he was somehow responsible for 911, did not get Kerry elected. It was fun for the left, but it did not win them the election.

It is one thing to take off the gloves when it comes to policy, but to make personal attacks that blow up in your face...well, I doubt if that helps anyone but Obama. What if they get his grades and they are pretty good? And what if they aren't? Do people care one way or the other?

I think most people are more concerned with the price of gas and high unemployment than they are this stuff.

One thing about Trump, he does know how to create jobs and employ people.  He has had huge business successes and failures.  Obama has never employed anyone in his life.  Shoot, Obama's never had a real job where he had to make a payroll, live and die on a budget, or create/produce anything.

Obama doesn't have a clue about "the art of the deal" because he never sponsored any meaningful legislation in all his time as a Senator.  He has abdicated executive duties to Nancy and Harry.  He thinks he can rule by executive order instead of trying to work anything out with the other side.

85 My guess, by the way, isn't that Obama was a D-student. His grades are probably acceptable, though not stellar.

No.  I'm thinking "B".  Lots of A's in upper-level courses (i.e., easy A's in electives and subjective grading) C's generally in required courses.

Remember, he majored in political science.  He wasn't exactly loading up with calculus or organic chemistry.

I suspect, instead, that his transcript is larded up with touchy-feely liberal arts stuff that, with the benefit of hindsight, probably doesn't look too good.

I think it'll be clear that he didn't take anything that wasn't soft if he didn't have to.  I think the real killer, though, is the titles of his courses.  You know at least 3 have to have Marx in the title.

The whole point of this strategy is to force Obama to play defense. If he gets to set the agenda with the cover of the msm he does whatever the hell he wants. If he is made to constantly answer questions, well people start to have questions. We've been told endlessly that Obama is a genius with Magic Negro type powers. Everyone who already buys this shit is going to vote for him anyway and those that don't aren't going to vote for him if it turns out he's Einstein's smarter younger brother. But there are plenty of people for whom the jury is still out on Obama. If his aura of awesomeness can be chipped away at by questioning the Obama/msm narrative those are votes that can be captured by team us. All Obama has is manufactured awesome. Then so what?  It's not like people are going to say "ZOMG I guess the last 4 years didn't happen! I guess he's awesome again!"

Besides, people are getting caught up in the immediacy of the moment here: we are more than a YEAR AND A HALF away from the election, i.e. several lifetimes.  This is a story which will play out, if at all, over the next few months or so at most.  It'll be dead long before the real race begins.

Which is one reason why the strategist in me says it's a win-win bet to go for broke.  Again, it's about softening the motherfucker up in advance of the real game.  Take the sheen off of him, make him look like just another sadsack failed President.  Remember folks, Carter was originally hailed as a "super smart nuclear scientist" before he became a hapless clown dishing out "more mush from the wimp."

177 AND there is nothing wrong with asking for a guy's school records -and how it was paid for -  look at the hell Christine McDonnell was put through for hers? Hell, any employer will ask for that info (not the who paid for it part, but the grades, class rank, etc)

The problem we run into is when we become invested in saying he did poorly. That is where some of the birther stuff went awry for some. People who were invested in him being born in Kenya did look silly - however, it was not wrong to question why he was so resistant to releasing the actual one - AND it didn't even require him to travel to Hawaii.... it was a mere phone call away. Him stubbornly refusing to release it just seemed curiouser and curiouser the longer it went on.

189 I know, I know.  But what is more effective, arguing about font sizes on birth certificates or asking the jackass about gas prices?

We agree on that.  But here's the thing: it's a two-layered game.  I would be mortified and worried if our Prez candidates started picking up this Transcript stuff (or any other small beer, for that matter).  You're right that they should focus on the big stuff: horrible fiscal stewardship, Obamacare, incoherent foreign policy, gas prices etc. etc. etc.  But us?  And useless vanity candidates like Trump?  We have a different set of operating parameters.

This, incidentally, is EXACTLY the sort of game that the left has been running successfully against us for over a decade -- hitting hard on this nasty crap below the belt while leaving the Official Politican Types free to float above it all.  If the blogosphere and talk radio is worth a sweet goddamn as a meme generator, it will be to push this stuff.

We did it with Kerry's Swift Boat stuff, to be perfectly frank, and it succeeded.  Nobody wanted to touch that shit in the MSM or even the mainstream GOP political class.  But we forced it out there and it had an effect (and rightfully so, because Kerry was a lying disgraceful weasel about his war service).  Why not try and replicate the same thing here?  It goes to the heart of Obama's identity and character as a nominee.

Candidates should remain focused on substantive issues and the Democrats abuse of procedure.

We shouldn't expect conservative candidates to make the personal and nasty arguments. That's up to us. Take every opportunity to slam this guy for every one of his numerous flaws, particularly his serial lies, lack of transparency etc, when just bullshitting or when talking loud in check-out line. Try to make sure everyone you know and everyone you just met are fired up to vote Obama out of office and those that aren't fired up have their doubts..

I don't expect candidates to carry that water, eg. transcripts, Obama condescension, whatever. If this were a war, it must be total war. In total war targets aren't limited. All are good. Media too. Let these mushy independents in on the secret that the MFM lies through omission daily. It was not just a passing fancy, as Trump published a campaign book, The America We Deserve, one week before the DowÂ’s Grand Supercycle top on January 14, 2000. 198 I think that the transcripts thing is only kinda partially a thing - the point is that Mr Open and Transparent has to be forced into openness and transparentness. But I don't think people care whether he is a super genius or not. If you don't like him, you probably think he's a dumbass already, and if you do like him it doesn't matter cause he's so damn dreamy. Al Gore's grades and IQ stuff was out there, and the fact that he was a C student didn't faze people on thinking that he was just a genius on global warming. W's grades and IQ were out there, and that didn't stop people from thinking he was a retarded chimp if they didn't like him. So I don't see the profit. Rush is right (surprise!) that people (meaning right leaning GOP kind of people) want to see a candidate who pushes back at least as hard, if not twice as hard. Not slinks in the corner and goes "I better not respond because some soccer mom in the Cincinatti suburbs turns the wheel down on her controller when she hears conflict." Look, Obama is a partisan, snippy hack - if people aren't turned off by his slammage, guess what - you can get away with it too. Remember when Rush said he hoped Obama would fail and everyone except Ann Coulter said that he was out of bounds? Well guess what, he's still there and richer than ever. And a lot more people hope Obama fails at his attempt to "fundamentally transform America."

As I recall, last few days of the campaign, North was ahead by a couple of points in the polls, and the Dem candidate unloaded a ton of negative ads. And of course North lost, by a razor thin margin. I recall the last line of the film was essentially. "Shit, I let up. I'll never do that again."

Start going down that road and the Trained Aversion kicks in, and they say, "Oh, I don't want to hear about all that."

What a load of bullshit. Get Erik Erikson to ban anyone who mentions it while you're at it. If I was advising Trump I'd tell him full speed ahead. Why?

Because Obama got into office running as a blank slate with some nice happy thoughts and promises written on it. Over the past few years those thoughts and promises have gotten steadily erased as each has proven to be a fraud. People are not happy about that. Now there are lots of open spaces on that slate and not surprisingly things like "Where's the Birth certificate?" are sticking because Obama doesn't have anything good to write there. Obama erased that today. The answer to that isn't let's be nice and just play Tic Tac Toe on the blank slate. You replace it with "Where's the Transcripts?" and force Obama to erase it...or leave it there and let people wonder. People are starting to wonder. Either Obama gives them some more hopey, changey stuff or we give them something.

244 Look, let's get this in the open right now.
Trump ain't running for President. Period. Not this time, not next time, not any time. He's never even considered actually running, not seriously. He doesn't need to. He makes more money than the POTUS, has more power than POTUS, and doesn't have to kiss hands and shake babies every four years to keep his job.
And this, more than anything else, is what scares the fuck out of BlowBamma. Trump has absolutely nothing to lose in any of this. He already has a job, more money than he could ever hope to spend, private planes, yachts, you name it. Unlike someone like Huckabee or Mittens, if he actually ran - and lost - he'd just shrug it off and head back to Florida to make some more money. So - he has no reason not to keep plugging away at all the stuff that Barry has managed to keep secret (with the help of the MFM). All the carefully crafted subterfuge, gone in a flash, and all done by someone who is just digging around for the hell of it.
Brilliant.

251 "...the middle has that Trained Aversion to thinking about anything that might implicate, even indirectly, race and Affirmative Action. Start going down that road and the Trained Aversion kicks in, and they say, "Oh, I don't want to hear about all that..."

Respectful disagreement.  (1)  When it comes to Affirmative Action (AA) the only real aversion the middle has is for affirmative action itself.  Whenever they have been given the chance to vote on it, they reject it by wide margins, even in such reliably blue states as California and Michigan.  In Michigan in 2006, when ending affirmative action was on the ballot along with the Governor, the gutless (and clueless) Republican gubernatorial candidate DeVos opposed ending affirmative action, aligning himself with the Proto-Obama Democrat incumbent Granholm.  DeVos got his ass handed to him but the constitutional amendment passed by 56 percent, a vote identical to what the Democrat governor.  That means an awful lot of folks who pulled the lever for a Democratic governor also pulled the lever to end affirmative action. (And the voters will never be honest with pollsters about their real views on affirmative action either.  A month before the election where it passed with 56 percent one poll had the amendment being defeated with only 40 percent supporting. Either those polled were lying or every undecided voter broke in favor. )

(2)  A lot of voters who took the leap of faith to vote for Obama in 2008 have got to be wondering, what the hell happened?  They are going to want an explanation.  Some  A lot may be willing to go back to square one with the guy and start asking some basic "who exactly is this guy?" kinds of questions.  One such question could be, is he as smart as the media led us to believe? and another could be, "how come we don't know as much about him as we were told about McCain, Kerry, Gore, Bush, Clinton, etc?

Ask and you shall receive, Muckdog.

Also on the energy issue, Trump declares: “Obama’s moratorium on drilling has been a total disaster. How could this guy have people not being able to travel, not being able to fill up their tanks with gasoline, and he’s got a moratorium on drilling? We should drill in Alaska, and we should drill all over until we don’t need foreign oil. We should use natural gas and clean coal. We should use everything in our power.”

Noting that the prices of food and clothing have also been rising, Trump says “part of that is because the dollar is so weak. He’s allowed the dollar to fail.

“He likes it because short term it’s a little bit good for the country in terms of trade. But long term, it’s a disaster. He’s allowed the dollar to go so low that it is becoming a laughingstock, just like him.”

Jeff B.  first of all good work, yesterday - I watched it unfold! It was great. Now, Rush addressed the issue you just put forth - a woman caller was on about Trump being a doofus, and expressed concern that he would spoil it for others. Rush politely led her through the current list of contenders and asked her if she thought they would win against Obama. When she realized none of them, and it was so funny listening to her reaction to each of them -  then Rush said so what is wrong with Trump? Or something like that. His point being that those of us who want Obama out would vote for a wet bag of potato chips if it was running against Obama. The media isn't going to like anyone of the current bunch contemplating running, and will like any more conservative even less. So, just relax. If Trump decides to run and he wins the nomination, we will support him over Obama. Hopefully someone else comes along, but for now, Trump is the only one really out there taking Obama on.

I went on a field trip with my daughter's fifth grade class last year to a "green house".  The tour guide was telling the kids that someday they would have to live by riding a bike to make the toaster work, or the TV, all that crap.  When we were driving home I told my daughter that woman was insulting her whole class because she didn't give future people any credit for coming up with a better solution to the problems of today.

I think the same way about my health.  It's incurable now, but it's not deadly, so I have time for someone to come up with something that will help me.  I will say though, having the country going to hell at the same time is kind of bad timing.

285 From Beldar:

And by November 2012, no undecided voter is going to be much interested in drawing inferences about Obama's likely performance as POTUS in 2013-2017 based on Obama's college or law school transcripts. It's not that the old evidence will become irrelevant, it's just that it's going to be massively outweighed by the much more obvious (indeed, inescapable) and much more current evidence of Obama's massive incompetence combined with fiscal and regulatory recklessness as POTUS.

The problem with this thinking? Obama will run on the "give it time" line the same Bush did with the Iraq War. The transcripts show why more time isn't going to help.We need to give people an explanation of why this was bad policy to begin with. Part of that explanation is that it was made by a pretty mediocre politician, that's why.

Rush can take care of himself. Remember all the screaming over his 'imitation' of the Chinese Prime Minister's speech? I don't think Rush ever apologized though the entire the chattering class was after his head. I heard him make fun of the episode.

Keep the pressure on. I don't care about the grades, I want to see the various college admission records, tuition records and anything else that might show what kind of aid Obama may have received as a 'foreign student'.

298 I don't know what exactly Rush has in mind... Posted by: Ace at 07:43 PM There's an easy way to figure that out... (1) tune in to his free show on the radio or (2) read the free transcripts on his website. You do the same thing of which you accuse liberals of doing RE: conservatives. Instead of actually going to the source and finding out the answer to your questions, you simply speculate. As you point out, liberals do this all the time INRE conservatives. Instead of going to the source to figure out what conservatives think, they speculate about conservatives. Try tuning into his show on a regular basis or just reading the transcripts from his show he posts online each evening.

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at April 27, 2011 07:59 PM (NITzp)

299 Also, you stated this in your last Trump post: "So why the heck is Rush boosting him every day? ... Does Rush not know the man has given mostly to Democrats?" If you bothered to listen to his show or read his transcripts, he actually interviewed Trump on 4/15 and asked him about this very thing: ----- RUSH: But you, you. Last time you were here I shared with you some questions I had from members of my audience uncomfortable with donations that you have made to Democrats: Rahm Emanuel, Chuck Schumer, and so forth. DONALD TRUMP: Right. RUSH: You explained that. You have to do business in the places you live. They're the ones that hold power, hold office. You mentioned compromise just now. Donald, what are you gonna do if you're elected and all of a sudden they start accusing you of wanting to kill babies and kill old people, which they will. That's what they do. Your friendship's gonna go out the window with these guys when it comes to their political power, Donald. They're gonna come after you the same way they go after anybody else in the Republican Party. DONALD TRUMP: Yeah, you're right, Rush, but I will say this. You know, I've dealt with Democrats and Republicans all my life, and somebody said, "Oh, do you have that much experience politically?" You know, I've dealt -- and understand this better than anybody. I've dealt with politicians all of my life. I've also dealt with foreign countries. I'm doing jobs all over the world. I've dealt with foreign countries for a long period of time. The fact is, I think somebody that got along with the Democrats -- and I do get along -- now, you know, that could change instantaneously. You understand that. But the level of animosity... You know, in the old days "across the aisle" wasn't the worst thing. People got along. Today, the level of hatred, the level of anger -- and I'm the most militaristic person there is, if they treat me improperly. But I think having a little bit of a relationship on the other side of the aisle is not so bad, Rush, where deals can be made. But good deals, not the deal like Obama gave the other day. That wasn't a deal, that was a campaign speech. That was his first campaign speech. RUSH: But they're not gonna want you to succeed at anything. They will stop progress for America. Your relationship with them will change once you become elected. If you become president, you might have the ability to bring them in line, but they will not start that way. They will be out to destroy you to preserve their way of life, their political ideology. Remember, their power derives from creating more and more people dependent on government for their daily needs. DONALD TRUMP: Right. RUSH: You don't believe that. DONALD TRUMP: Rush, you're probably right and probably it won't work out in the kind of manner which makes sense and would be good and then they'll see the real Donald Trump, because I do much better under adversity than I do the other way. I'd love to see it work where people could actually get together and go down the line and straighten out this country. You're probably right, and that's fine, and then I'll do I think an even better job. RUSH: Well, it would be fascinating to me because you do know them. DONALD TRUMP: I know them so well it's unbelievable. RUSH: You have socialized with them. I think that if they tried to attack you the way they attack every other conservative or Republican, you might have a leg up on them because you've got years and years of being able to say, "Well, Chuck, you never said that to me before. You never accused me of wanting to kick old people out of their houses. Why do you think I want to do it now?" DONALD TRUMP: Mmm-hmm. ----- Seriously, man, stop acting like the liberals you spent an entire long post describing the other day. 300 I think people find Trump appealing because he is not afraid of Obama. He is not afraid of the media. He doesn't care what the ruling class says. He has never backed down. Unfortunately, our side is always compromising and trying to be bipartisan. They are weak and scared. Trump has been a breath of fresh air in this regard. Posted by: runningrn at April 27, 2011 07:59 PM Yep, just take a look at all the popular people in the GOP right now: Sarah Palin, Chris Christie, Herman Cain, Allen West, Donald Trump. What is the common factor among all of them? They go on the offensive against the Left and don't back down. People have had it with the milquetoast, squishy, go-along-to-get-along RINO GOP candidates like McCain, Huckabee, Romney, etc. They want a fighter. Because they know that we are in a political war with the Left for the future survival of this nation and it is going to take a fighter to fight this political war.

Sean Hannity made a good point last night while explaining why he doesn't care what Obama's grades were.  It wouldn't matter if the President got all A's in college.  He's still a lousy president.

One of Obama's campaign promises was to reduce the federal deficit. By how much has Obama reduced the federal deficit?

307 Why are some people angry at Trump? He won't win the nomination for the GOP, and he will make life a living hell for Obama over the next month or two.... What is so wrong with all that?
