Are You Ready For Senator Ron Paul?
— DrewM

Ron Paul!

"It's certainly crossed my mind," Paul told The Ballot Box of a potential run for Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's (R-Texas) Senate seat next year.

New numbers out Wednesday from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling found Paul was second only to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst (R) among Texas Republicans asked who they want to see run for the seat in 2012.

The poll found Dewhurst to be the top choice of Republicans, garnering 23 percent support. But Paul was right behind him as the pick of 20 percent of GOP voters.

Really Texas? Really?

Personally, I don't believe any polling at this point. 2012 is just too far away. if we learned anything from the pronouncements about the death of the GOP after Obama's election, it's that everything can change in 2 years.

Still, Paul would have a lot of advantages in a primary race: high name recognition, a huge fund-raising base and of course an army of, um, dedicated followers. Oh and don't forget the blimp.

On the upside, if he does run for the Senate, at least the rest of us won't have to suffer watching him run for President again.

5 Ron Paul has been playing the same tune for too long. He hasn't actually succeeded in getting anything done. Maybe a less doctrinaire and more realistic approach would work better.

That, and what Ben said. He is a very creepy guy.

7 Really Texas? Really?

No.  Not really.  Ron Paul would get pretty well creamed by any of: David Dewhurst, Roger Williams (former Sec State, also current, very successful, businessman in Weatherford), or Michael Williams (currently a Railroad Commissioner).  I even think he'd lose to Tom Leppert (current mayor of Dallas).

11 I think that if Paul wins the primary, he still doesn't have the chops to win the general. We're a red state, but we've got 2.5 (maybe 3 if you count Austin) big cities in this state. Democrats are still dangerous here.

31 Unfortunately Buz I think he can run in the primary with out quiting the House. Unless someone primaries him for the House seat he will still have plenty of time to make a filing deadline. (I say this not knowing the exact filing deadlines in Texas. But in general there is no ban on running in a Primary while occupying different seat.)

Good, because he has enough of a name to gain 20% of the vote in an unfocused race..  Especially with those who say "well, I like his views on fiscal issues."

Rand is surprising me by not being...insane.  Ron has no such controls.

Plus, Ron Paul is 75 years old.  He would be 77 upon assuming office.

Isn't Michael Williams a possible gubernatorial candidate?

36 How much influence would Ronnie have on issues that he is wacky on?  Not much is my guess.  His optics aren't the best, but there are so many Senators already in there that drive me nuts because they are so easily swayed by statist impulses.

Also, let me second the cage match with Al Franken, and I hope Ron wins because Franken is an embarrassment to my state.

For Senate?  No.  There's word he's looking at a Presidential run (despite his protestations otherwise), or that he'd be open to VP, but I think he's done all the legislating he ever cares to do.

Remember that as Lt. Governor under W, he had a lot more to do with actual bills that got passed than he does now as Governor.

This is also why I'm not terribly concerned that Dewhurst is a RINO.  He's more of a squish than much of the state, but that still puts him as solidly more conservative than, say, Lindsey Graham, or John McCain.

Personally, I'm looking at Roger or Mike Williams as my two favorites.  I'd really rather Dewhurst stay in Austin.

As part of the Railroad Commission, Mike Williams comes close- understands fiat regulation better, I suspect.  So they're neck-and-neck in my view.

We did have Governors George Dukemejian and Pete Wilson for two terms after Moonbeam, solid by Cali standards.

But then, the GOP elites, partly out of immigration romanticism, partly out of a greedheaded desire for cheap gardeners and maids, put out the word that excessive underclass illegal immigration was not to be dealt with. Those who would deal with it (Pete Wilson, Tom Tancredo) were to be shunned. Those who "Hispandered" (Jack Kemp) were to be promoted.

It has been downhill since. The best way to reduce bankruptcy, poverty and corruption is to *stop importing it*.

Because, in Texas, the Republican Primary is the election.  At the moment, anyway.  Short of a complete unknown (some state Rep, or Tom Leppert of Dallas, for example) winning the Republican Primary, the Republican won't really have much competition; the Democrat bench in Texas is empty.

Bill White would make a race interesting, but Democrats for National Office in Texas have the same problem RINOs do against Democrats:  They have to play Republican-Lite.  And, typically, we like our Republicans fairly pure.  In addition to that, Bill White has, thus far, shown absolutely no interest in running another campaign right after getting creamed by Rick Perry in the Gubernatorial election.

What do ya live in Pittsburgh or something?

I do not and am not a fan of either team, but Mark Sanchez vs. Steeler D in the ketchup bottle in 20 degree weather is kind of cruel and unusual punishment.

Poodles vs. gladiators in the Roman Colosseum would have been a closer contest.

I've been a steeler fan for 35 years.  My two older brothers gave me the choice:  black and gold or die.  I picked the black and gold lol.

The jets have no idea what they're walking into on sunday.  10 million terrible towels, and 55 very focused, angry men.

I heard they played the Renegade video at Jets practice to "get ready" lol.

Can I interest any of you in some campaign literature ("President" and "2008" crudely redone with a magic marker) or a free DVD copy of "Loose Change"?

I buy gold coins and handgun ammo, do you?

Such compelling issues, so much like witchcraft and onanism prohibitions.

We are trillions of dollars in debt and the federal government is regulating our light bulbs and gearing up to off your grandma on account of the cost-benefit analysis.

Who cares if the guy is kind of bug-eyed. Compared to the rest of them he's a freakin paragon of a sane, lucid, rational policy maker. You gonna get hung on whether or not he flirts with conspiratorial kooks or is an isolationist?

What do ya live in Pittsburgh or something?

Yes, I do.

The Jets offense has beaten Pat and Indy defense in the last two weeks. I don't believe either of those defenses is in the top 20. The Steelers have the number 1 D in the league. They gave up an average of 58 rushing yards a game. They've had  One 100 yard rusher against them in the past 50 games.

Sanchez has had it easy.

The only way that the Jets win this game is if Pittsburgh has a special teams meltdown, which is entirely possible.

But offensively we're better and defensively we're better.

Barry has jinxed the Bears by saying they'll win.

The fun part is I remember seeing him on TV the night before Super Bowl XLI, when he was technically a Senator from Illinois, refusing to pick the Bears over the Colts, because he didn't want to offend Indiana primary voters.  I was with my best friend (at the time a "ham sammich" Democrat; in this last cycle she worked for Jim DeMint and Tim Scott, I'm that good ) and neither of us could believe what a pussy move that was.  Even the women office-holders who wouldn't know a football from a hockey puck claim to be fans of the team they represent....

Why does Michelle Obama hate fat people?

Well, she said she was going to help military families, so I for one am glad she's not following through with that. Oh, wait, she totally is:

...a three percent increase over last year...

Aides say the first lady has spent a great deal of time with military spouses and relaying their concerns to the West Wing staff.  When pressed to outline exactly what the first lady had done to make this funding happen, an aide stressed it was a "team effort" and that while Mrs. Obama has played a role in conveying the concerns and issues that military families have around the country, she has not been directly involved in any budget negotiations.

It's not like the Ravens who are always at our throats. Or the Patriots who beat us in the AFC championship in 2001 because of a penalty on a punt.

159 Re Giffords, the reason I switched to FN was the presser with Gifford's husband.  She's being moved to a state-of-the-art facility in Houston.

That's wonderful, and I pray she has a full recovery.  What a shame that if Obamacare does get through, the rest of us won't have the same care should we need it.

Just had to step away from the news for a while.

It was partially a caricature of my ex-roommate, who was a SERIOUS Paulian (guy had $300 of yard signs, stickers, and literature left by the Kentucky primaries) and partly general entertainment value.

Hell, my wife and I protest-voted for Ron in the Tennnessee primary (Fort Campbell splitting the state line, us living south of post) because teh Fred! had packed it in. We didn't take our yard sign down until well after the inauguration.

Doesn't anyone know exactly where the bullet entered and exited the skull? It seems to me like she is progressing fast. Did it not hit an important part of her brain?

This is sounding to me like there was little or no impact to the brain at all, as if the bullet hit the temple and blew away part of the forehead and skull, but made very little contact with actual brain tissue.

Gird your loins, Morons. If she returns to public life as a re-committed Democrat, the Rhetoric Police will grant her Ultimate Moral Authority to say anything she wants to say, and damn all who voice objection to her words.

Is there an unneeded part of the brain?

Yes, the part we keep in Joe Biden.

I once prosecuted a case involving the robbery of a convenience store in which the clerk was shot in the head at close range with a .22 caliber pistol.  The bullet hit her at the hairline, didn't penetrate the skull, move an inch or so under the skin then exited the head.  By the time the cops got there, she was back behind the counter helping a customer.  (I didn't prosecute the charges against the shooters.  My guy was a friend of theirs who painted their vehicle and provided them with cash to flee the area.  They did flee the area, got to Idaho, and killed two people in a home invasion robbery.  At least one was sentenced to death in Idaho.  I'm not sure if I ever heard what the other guy got.)

If you had your choice between someone like Jim Demint or Ron Paul, which would you choose?

DeMint. If it's a choice between Hutchinson or Cornyn and Paul, I'll take Paul.

Paul is not the only man who can save America, he's not even the most likely man, he's kind of kooky, and you'll need more than one man at any rate, but if he happens to become a senator, he is an asset to be welcomed.

Whether or not he's the best we have (he's not even close), he will be on the right side of the battle in general, and I'm not talking about the partisan battle. He'll be voting for DeMint's bills, and he'll be a pain in McConnell's ass, and he is the kind that would have contributed to a fillibuster of O-care where all the Snow's and Collin's failed us catastrophically in a way that may literally kill your grandmother, no hyperbole.

Unless she is Israeli.

Overblown bullshit. Dude might be a racist, don't know don't care. He isn't trying to kill or harm anyone.

He just doesn't want to stop the Muzzies from doing it.

Nope, probably not. So what? You don't need him to - he's fine to refrain. Others can stop that. It is not the only evil in the world. You shouldn't go looking for one person to solve everything anyway.

Got news for you: if the US winds up broke and busted, ain't no US politician gonna be prosecuting wars against terror in the mid-east because there won't be no money to pay for them.

191 If it's a choice between Hutchinson or Cornyn and Paul, I'll take Paul.

And, lucky for us Texans (or Texicans to use the classical term), our choice is not between Hutchison or Cornyn & Paul.

I think even David Dewhurst is far, far better than either of our current two constituents, and I tend to think that he'll be pulled even further right by the electorate no matter what he wants to do.

So, if, by some freak accident, Ron Paul ended up winning the Primary, I'd vote for him.  Until then, I plan to oppose him as much as possible.

Entropy at 140 - What's the difference between an idiot who thinks guam will tip over, and an idiot who thinks a gold standard will answer all our problems?

Both of these guys are currently in the House. There they are just one voice of 435. In the Senate Paul would be one of a hundred and one of two from one of the largest and the most dynamic state.

That is a much bigger deal than the House. Paul is already the one the MSM goes to when they need an interview to make all conservatives crazy. Can you imagine how often he would show up on MSNBC if he was a Senator?

Be careful you don't wind up with a Texan's version of McCain. If you can do better, go for it. But Paul is not the one your opposition should be centered on.

If you're preparing to do battle with paulnuts, it is probably because you're facing the wrong way. Turn around, numbskull.

The paulnuts are useful idiots.

You don't have to agree with them about everything, or even anything, that's the beauty, the whole point is they're trying to leave you alone.

198 Really that's a much better position for him than president.  I'd rather have Ron Paul tugging the Senate in his direction than another centrist RINO.  (Though obviously those may not be all the only choices; it is early still.)  But senators aren't Roman consuls, and especially on foreign policy one senator isn't going to cause disaster.
