Are You Ready For The Next Solyndra?
— DrewM

But we're not done with the first one yet!

Meet Nevada Geothermal. You already know their main champion, Harry Reid.

A recent audit by Deloitte & Touche expressed “significant doubt” about Nevada Geothermal Power’s “ability to continue as a going concern.” The company’s vital signs are not looking good: it “has incurred net losses over the past several years, has an accumulated deficit of $44.0 million and an anticipated inability to retire its long-term liabilities,” the audit concluded.

Nevada Geothermal enjoyed significant backing from the federal government. It received a $79 million loan guarantee from the same Energy Department program that helped finance the failed solar company Solyndra. It also got $66 million in federal grants from the Treasury Department.

Reid was instrumental in securing that financing for Nevada Geothermal, the New York Times reported on Monday. “Mr. Reid has taken the nascent geothermal industry under his wing,” the Times noted, “pressuring the Department of Interior to move more quickly on applications to build clean energy projects on federally owned land and urging other member of Congress to expand federal tax incentives to help build geothermal plants, benefits that Nevada Geothermal has taken advantage of.”

Reid defends this kind of corrupt waste by saying if the federal government didn't invest in this type of high-risk speculative project no one would. Which is kind of the point. If the upside outweighed the risks then private investors would do it. Of course, there wouldn't be anything in it for politicians if they couldn't spread around your money to buy votes for themselves.

I think this "green" loan program is going to be a rich source of material for the GOP in the coming year.

Meanwhile back in the original scandal, top administration officials were warned that Obama shouldn't visit Solyndra's plant.

A Silicon Valley investor and senior administration officials warned the White House to reconsider having President Obama visit a solar start-up company because of its mounting financial problems, saying he might be embarrassed later.

“A number of us are concerned that the president is visiting Solyndra,” California investor and Obama fundraiser Steve Westly wrote to Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett in May 2010. “Many of us believe the companyÂ’s cost structure will make it difficult for them to survive long term. . . . I just want to help protect the president from anything that could result in negative or unfair press.”

Yes, so unfair that this corrupt deal is hurting Obama.

Obama himself says, meh no big deal.

“Now there are going to be some failures,” he said. “Hindsight is always 20/20,” the president added about being warned about Solyndra’s financial problems. “It went through the normal review process and people thought this was a good bet.”

Yeah, who could have seen this coming? Except for the Bush administration which rebuffed the company's efforts to get the money sooner and Obama's OMB which called the exact time of Solyndra's bankruptcy.

Thus, they look good to the dummies (see Wall Street Occupiers) while preserving the source of future big donors capital. Solyndra was a failure before US invested. The investment allowed Solyndra shareholders to unload their real investment with taxpayers dollars. Bail out of Dem donors is the story.

Now that is telling.  The pilots (from what I understand) are the best clued-in employees (outside of actual corporate staff) as to the health of an airline.  If they want out, it's much, much more likely to be in an irrecoverable dive.

110 25 It doesn't matter how corrupt this deal or Solyndra was. It matters noting at all unless the Republicans do something about it.

Instead they tried to cut a few million from the green fraud to balance the additional money for for FEMA and the commies threatened shutdown again.

Crying Boner folded like a cheap suit.

I agree it doesn't matter unless the Republicans do something about it. However, about the funding- because of the fact that FEMA found they did, in fact, have the money to last through the end of FY 2011, no offsets were needed. Instead, all of the new FEMA spending starts this fiscal year.

As for green schemes in general, I hope the final appropriation bills have more cuts to these programs and I think DOE- Loans Programs (specifically) should take a serious hit. The Republicans are unlikely to do this, but they should (do it).

The business owner has been under this "servant" order for 10 months and is prohibited from owning any possessions,  prohibited from working, etc... http://www.lawinjustice.com has details about this disturbing case.

I think Ms. Knox may be pulling an OJ. I don't know why, it's just a feeling.

I hate to say it, but it's likely because the media wanted her to be guilty.  It's more "sensational" that way.  The lurid descriptions of what she and her boyfriend allegedly did (and now we'll never know, because the investigation was completely botched) got their creative juices all flowing.

And that's the problem- it is exactly the same thing that killed Mike Nifong's career- "Hey, here's a sensational case, I'll use it to become famous!" instead of "Oh my God, how could someone have done 'X?'  I must be meticulous in my investigation to ensure the criminal is given the due justice he/she deserves."

132 Harry Reid has some work-related connections to Nevada Geothermal (former employees):

"During the tour, Mr. Reid had a chance to see electric generation equipment installed by a company called Ormat Technology, which is a Nevada Geothermal partner. OrmatÂ’s lobbyist in Washington, Kai Anderson, and one of the companyÂ’s top executives, Paul Thomsen, are former aides to Mr. Reid.

Just last month, again with Mr. ReidÂ’s support, Ormat secured its own Energy Department loan guarantee, worth $350 million, to help support three other Nevada geothermal projects that are expected to produce 113 megawatts of power.

Mr. Reid has received some support from the industry, in the form of at least $43,000 worth of campaign contributions from the geothermal industry since 2009, according to an analysis of federal campaign finance records."

There are two ways to make deals with the Dems. One is to compromise conservative principles. This is McCain, and results in the "ratchet," or "boiling frog" effect, where the welfare state grows, albeit slower than under the Demtards.

The other is what I would call a Ryan model of principled conservatism, where you garner support for a liberal goal (e.g., "healthcare for all") by implementing with conservative means (maximizing free choice, leveraging market forces, eliminating bureaucracy).

Compromisers like McCain, Romney, and yes, W (a famous fiscal liberal) rarely get this. They are all too eager to fold to liberal temper tantrums and a hostile press eager to crucify them for stepping outside liberal orthodoxy (see Ryan, et al).

He was orginally sentenced to considerably more and suddenly the prosecutor supported a lesser sentence. The guy apparently has a mile long rap sheet. Meanwhile, just the fact that AK filed an appeal pissed off the prosecutor so much that he wanted to amend the sentence she was already serving to life in prison.

There are claims that her original leaked "confession" about being in the house and hearing Miss Kircher scream wasn't exactly how it seems. The claim is that after a rigorous overnight interrogation they told her to "imagine" she was in the house. Where would you be? What would it have sounded like? That kind of shit.

If this scenarios is true, and I have no clue if it is, then I'd LOVE to see a video of the interrogation.

Same.  So long as the federal government is so powerful, there will always be incentive to game the system for private benefit.  Hell, even if you took the campaign cash and graft out of the picture we'd still see this kind of thing going on.

It's hard to blame special interests like GM and Solyndra from contributing and lobbying when a relatively small investment in such can reap huge rewards in the form of grants, loans, regulations that hurt competitors, etc.

I actually don't think we necessarily could draft anyone else but it's always worth a shot. After all, we have had more influential conservatives in the presidential race this year and some non-candidates were led to reconsider bids (and not just due to Establishment pressure, either). So voters do have more of a say in some parts of the process but we also know the Republicans will want to "play it safe" with the eventual nominee. The unconventional nature of modern politics makes it difficult to predict how certain aspects of this election season will unfold.

Meh.  The first couple of seasons were great.  Then it just got boring.  It may be better, now, but I've moved on.

The same was true of CSI:Miami.  Great fun for the first 3 seasons, then it just went off the rails.  The Original CSI lasted about 6 seasons, I guess.  CSI:NY Is still good (and I support Gary Sinese, even if he only ever plays Gary Sinese).

Favorite show currently on TV: Bones.  Though the new show Unforgettable isn't bad, either.

Posted by: F4U Corsair

Corsair was a great plane, but the Lightning was no slouch. Also, the pilots were trained on how to react to a loss of one engine so they wouldn't flip over and crash, so you'd have to get both radiators. The radial engine is under appreciated, though. Nice Sexy power to weight ratio.

This is America, where we supposedly have freedom and capitalism. One of the features of this system is, a thing or a business or a product happens when somebody figures out a way to make money doing it.

Government command and control of economic activity does not work. Apparently this concept is beyond the comprehension of mental giants such as Harry Reid.

(Reuters) - Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he wants to bring ex-Soviet states into a "Eurasian Union" in an article which outlined his first foreign policy initiative as he prepares to return to the Kremlin as the country's next president.

It would be naive to attempt to restore or copy something from the past. However, a stronger integration on a new political and economic basis and a new system of values is an imperative of our era," Putin wrote.

Russia's relationship with its ex-Soviet neighbors has been troubled by trade and political disputes and even armed conflicts such as the 2008 war with Georgia.

Putin said he saw the new union as a supra-national body which would coordinate "economic and currency policy" between its members. It would also be open to new members.

WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - The Obama administration is lobbying Congress to unblock $200 million in aid for the Palestinian Authority that was frozen due to its bid for U.N. recognition of statehood over U.S. and Israeli objections.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Monday the administration was in "intensive" discussions with key lawmakers who had put holds on the money, a financial lifeline for the fledgling Palestinian government-in-waiting.

"We still have some money in the pipeline but the concern is that if we don't get this going with the Congress in short order there could be an effect on the ground," Nuland told a news briefing.

507 F4U and P38, Your arguing about Yamamoto reminded me of an old Baa Baa Black Sheep episode. IIRC, it involved some Army Air Force guys in P38s who show up on the island to team up with Boyington's squadron to go after Yamamoto. It's been at least ten years since I saw the episode, but I think as they're trying to figure out which squadron will get the honor of going after Yamamoto while the other flies cover, one of the Black Sheep screws up, so the AAF ends up as the primary attacker. Total fiction, of course.
