— Ace The neatest thing about this remains the fact that they did it at all. They built a six or eight year business plan on the idea they'd make some movies about Marvel's second-tier properties, with an eye to doing the big team-up in The Avengers. No one's ever done that before.
I think it's just going to be a standard comic book movie, when everything is said and done, but still, it's neat to see the heroes interacting, as they always do in the comics and never do in movies.

Can't watch the trailer at work- but I will when I get home tonight. I've been salivating over the Avengers movie since they confirmed they were planning to do it several years ago.
And the fact they chose Joss Whedon (sp?) to be the Director? Bonus.

A lot of the new movies are based, in whole or in part, on the "Ultimate" series from Marvel (started around 2001). In that version of the Avengers, Cap doesn't wear his mask (or didn't in the few issues I read).

I'm sure the plot will revolve around an alien coming to earth to blow up a gas station or something to show how powerful it is. Maybe an amusement park.

It kind of depends on which version of the Avengers. He is a major Avengers villain, though, so it works.
I believe the plot is (sort of) that Loki starts the Skrull invasion to take over earth. That seems a little weird for Loki (based on the comics), but who knows?
I'd like to see the sequel ('cause you know there will be one) use Baron Zemo (the only guy who routinely causes the Avengers much grief).

Whatever his personal politics, I cannot find fault with any of the stuff he's directed being "pinko." And I don't know his personal politics. The number of closet conservatives on the Buffy and Angel casts suggests he's not all that pinko, though.
Firefly, especially, could easily be seen as a Conservative show.

I've never read any Avenger's comic books. I loved spiderman and would occasionally read x-men, but that's it.
While Iron Man was a great movie and essentially a homage to capitalism, individualism and Ayn Rand, I didn't care for The Hulk movies, and i didn't even bother seeing Captain America or Thor.
Posted by: Ben at October 11, 2011 07:52 AM (wuv1c)
Isn't that what we pay for, though? And, with the exception of Thor, they're all nicely American heroes.
Iron Man: Capitalist King turns super-hero. Oh, and he's pro-military to boot.
Hulk: Okay, well he's just a monster who happens to beat on bad-guys.
Captain America: 'Nuff Said.
Hawk-Eye/Black Widow: SHIELD (read: CIA) Agents
Really, what's not to like? Besides, they'll get to beat up the rather effeminate Loki.

I guess that sums up my other problem with these comic book movies. The same, redundant, story lines. Loki was in the Thor movie. Why do we need to see him again? He was boring there - a totally uninteresting villain.
I guess we'll have a cameo by the Fantastic Four for the inevitable Super Skrull appearance.

I'm certainly not the first one to comment on it, but don't forget that costumed superheroes are our culture's version of the Gods of old (Thor perhaps most explicitly). "Serious" people tend to roll their eyes at this stuff and call it juvenile entertainment, but recall that this was deadly serious stuff for most people throughout human history. Stories like this are how we transmit our deepest-held beliefs in morals, ethics, and -- for want of a better term -- spiritus mundi. In this post-religious age, superheroes are as interesting for what they're not as much as for what they are.
Modern comic writers are of the opinion that heroes are more interesting when they're flawed. They get divorced, get into fights with their spouses, have money troubles, and have problems with alcoholism (Iron Man) -- which is very much in keeping with the Greek/Roman mythology tradition. Superman -- guarantor of truth, justice, and "the American way" -- tends to be a fairly boring superhero simply because he is truly Godlike: all-powerful, immortal, pure in both heart and mind. Batman was created in many ways as Superman's antithesis while still being a "good" guy, and is the far more interesting character of the two. (Which is why, generally speaking, Superman movies suck and Batman movies don't.*)
*Yes, yes, Donner's Superman was good and the Val Kilmer/George Clooney Batman movies were bad. Gimme a break here; I'm trying to make a point.

Yes, she did occupy the top spot of my "worst women scientists ever" list for many years until I had the misfortune of seeing Tara Reid playing an archeologist in Uwe Boll's "Alone in the Dark". Now "Christmas Jones" is 2nd on my list, but a very close second only exceeded by Reid's performance.

Nonsense. It gave Willow a reason to become RAGE BIATCH and pay off the whole magic addiction thing. You can argue about that whole plotline (I personally think Alyson is far too cute to pull that off, but the part where she was magic-battling Giles was awesome) but at least it got it to the end.
Also, Whedon is a secular hero at campus womyn's studies departments the world over, so you're on a serious uphill climb claiming he's misogynist. They write actual peer-reviewed papers in journals about how Buffy made it OK for women to have pooters and stuff. (Clearly they haven't met Ace).
Oh, and he's as pinko as charged. (A lot of his fans took the university's side in the recent blowup about the Nathan Fillion poster). But he's very good at keeping it out of his writing. Serenity is pretty much all about what happens to the good intentions of liberals in real life.

What's great is that the movie doesn't have to waste time with individual "origin" background storylines (like Marvel did with the X-Men movie) since that's all been established in earlier films.
Should make for a stronger overall story. Glad to see Marvel learned from its mistakes.

One of the talking heads was breathlessly reporting the group is very organized and has committees that meet every evening, to do things like figure out which stores to contact to solicit food donations. And, yes, they have a womins focus committee. Of course they do.

"Steam valves are for losers. Pans of gasoline, baby."
Here's the link, the main movie is "Reefer Madness", but the shorts are first. It's done live:http://tinyurl.com/5rucs5c

Thor always was kind of a silly superhero, and I actually liked the way the movie sort of played on that. The guy who played Thor played him as an arrogant but good-hearted galoot, and that's the right tone for that character. (I thought I'd hate Anthony Hopkins as Odin, but he did a pretty good job with it.)

Kensington, do you mean streaming movies that you can control (stop, pause, etc)?
The riff track is a small audio file (about 30mb) that you simply play like you'd play a song. All you have to do is play it while playing the movie. They tell you exactly when to start playing the riff track, too.
In other words, they choose a specific point in the movie (such as the production logo fade out) and tell you to press play at that point.

Hopkins is great at Shakespeare and Thor has always been a Shakespeare-ian story. Having him and Branagh on the film was inevitable which ended up being a on par with Cap and Iron Man IMO. Wish Branagh was doing Thor 2 as I can't see anyone else hitting all the notes in the same way

MWR, are you familiar with megaupload? If you want, I'll link the address to The Room movie that already has the riffttrack on it.

I think it's the other way, Shakespeare derived his plot elements from the mythology...

I'm wondering if anyone has actually had that experience or has had a relatively good experience using a streamed movie rather than a DVD.

Hey, that's not cool. Those guys put in the effort, and they should be paid for their work.

I second this.
Now I will go download QuickTime and allow it to infest my computer again because I'm a stupid fanboy.

Rifftrax allows people who don't want to go through the bother of getting the DVD and getting the rifftrack audio file to donate on their website.
Mike Nelson understands this happens and all he asks is that you pay for the track.

Ace, don't you understand now from this why you should be using your power to interact with President Obama? He's like Iron Man and you're working with Dr Doom and the Green Goblin

One of the targeted homes is Jamie Dimon's (JP Morgan boss) who is currently out of town, so they'll be protesting at an empty house.

In other words they'll be protesting in front of a bunch of big Obama donors homes. Barry should try to get a better handle on his little rent a mob or he'll end up pissing off his money men

Joss Whedon has never done anything good. If you're gonna tell me, OH BUT BUFFY! OH BUT FIREFLY! OH BUT OTHER HIPSTER BULLSHIT! OH, THIS PIECE OF CRAP HAD AN ATTRACTIVE ACTRESS AND THAT'S ALL MY REPTILE BRAIN DESIRES, then leave your balls in the bucket by the door.
God, I hope he doesn't ruin this, but I bet he will. Fuck. Why couldn't it have been anything but Whedon?

It's on there.
It's also pretty lame.
I don't need quicktime or itunes or other apple garbage on my computer. Good grief.
Anyway, I will wait for it to be on netflix. I doubt I'll watch more than fifteen minutes of it at that point.
