Awesome: Tyrant Toddler Julian Assange Might Just Have Murdered Zimbabwe Opposition Leader
— Ace

He prances and preens like he's some kind of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, but he's really a child running around with a shiny new toy of scissors.

Zimbabwe's last best hope is probably going to wind up getting the death penalty thanks to Captain Oblivious' utter inability to do any sort of homework. Selectiveness is difficult, requiring hours of reading and evaluating. Better just to put all of Pfc. Manning's cables out there and let other people, like insane dictator Robert Mugabe, figure out what it all means.

Mugabe has tortured this guy and tried to kill him multiple times. Last time round, he only wounded Tsvangirai, but did manage to murder his wife. Julian Assange has given Mugabe pretext to do what he's been trying to do secretly for years, now finally "legal." Because WikiLeaks has exposed that behind the scenes, Tsvangirai was agitating for sanctions and restrictions on Zimbabwe diplomats' travel.

Publicly, Tsvangirai opposed the measures out of political necessity. In private conversations with western diplomats, however, the ascendant Tsvangirai praised its utility in forcing Mugabe's hand in the new unity government.

Now, in the wake of the WikiLeaks' release, one of the men targeted by US and EU travel and asset freezes, Mugabe's appointed attorney general, has launched a probe to investigate Tsvangirai's involvement in sustained western sanctions. If found guilty, Tsvangirai will face the death penalty.

And so, where Mugabe's strong-arming, torture and assassination attempts have failed to eliminate the leading figure of Zimbabwe's democratic opposition, WikiLeaks may yet succeed. Twenty years of sacrifice and suffering by Tsvangirai all for naught, as WikiLeaks risks "collateral murder" in the name of transparency.

Before more political carnage is wrought and more blood spilled – in Africa and elsewhere, with special concern for those US-sympathising Afghans fingered in its last war document dump – WikiLeaks ought to leave international relations to those who understand it – at least to those who understand the value of a life.

Take a bow, Julian. Thank God we have you to protect us all against secrecy. Like the horrible secrecy of an opposition leader hoping to depose an insane, murderous tyrant.

That's not entirely true - he has been selective with the cables for purposes of blackmail.

He's sitting on hundreds of thousands of cables that will only be released in the event of his serious arrest or demise.

8 I was wondering why the CIA or the Mossad had not finished Assanger, but to be honest, so far all the leaked cables make both Israel and the USA look good. Not Obama so much, but The USA as a whole pretty good. It's the rest of the world that talks about of both sides of their mouths.

Posted by: nevergiveup at January 04, 2011 03:31 PM (0GFWk)

9 So, to be clear, you're blaming Julian Assange for letting Robert Mugabe act like... Robert Mugabe? I mean, the guy's a douchebag, whether or not you agree with his ends or means, but put the correct blame where it is. Mugabe tortured and murdered the family of this guy, it's not like he needed some sort of fucking rubber stamp by what passes for Zimbabwean (?) law to finish the job.
Next up on Ace: Chinese oppression of human rights dissidents ALSO the fault of Wikileaks.

14 It's amusing watching the WL fanboys breathily defending their pale hero Assange in the comments, some going so far as to imply that Mr. Tsvangirai is getting his comeuppance for trying to undermine his political rival Mugabe.  The great irony in this article, however, is that it appears on the Guardian website; perhaps their editors ought to have thought twice before colluding with Assange in the first place.

Two more things on WikiLeaks that explain some of Obama's seemingly ridiculous actions (admittedly coming from lefty moonbat blogs):

1. The DOJ's witchunt over the torture memos was a sham just to give the Heisman to other countries who actually would have prosecuted our guys.

I personally blame Holder for releasing the memos in the first place, which caused the entire mess.

2. Sir Golfsalot's executive order decrying the GOP keeping Gitmo open is to let Hillary! work with other countries to keep our counterterror ops going.

26 My late dad took amazing pics of the airport in Congo when he took part in a secret operation in the early 60s.  He had amazing pics of the blood-splattered walls of the airport, and the bullet holes.  He also took pics of Soviet henchmen stepping off their plane.

He was sitting in a bar at the airport, drinking with a British colonel, when the colonel suddenly said, "I say, I see a spot of trouble over there."  He and my dad hopped onto a jeep and rode over to a fence separating a bunch of angry people looking to riot on the airfield.  Dad said the Brit stood up, spoke in English to the mass of people, they had no idea what he said, but applauded and left.

Those were the days.

No, but I don't care that the Wikileaks released the US cables either. Like I said, I was trying to figure out whether the objections to Wikileaks were parochial or principled. If they're parochial, it seems then that, to take the position people here seem to be taking, there has to be an unquestioned assumption that the USFG makes correct decisions when choosing to classify documents, and that those decisions should remain functionally unquestioned.
So my followup question is: why do you make that assumption? Why trust the government in that decision as opposed to any other decision that they've shown no particular competence in making?

37 @35: Invalid comparison. Individual privacy is a fundamental freedom that is protects us from the state, and can only be taken away by the state. The government has no freedoms, and therefore has no expectation of privacy. In fact, it has an obligation to the citizenry to expose itself to scrutiny. Individual freedom comes at the expense of the state, state freedom comes at the expense of the individual.

And it's not so much about hate as a desire for justice.  Assange wants to play at spycraft, so he needs to be treated as such.  And professionally introduced to an empty elevator shaft (Or polonium in his milk if it turns out he does have stuff on the Russians).

36  So, according to your line of reasoning, if a government knew that in exactly 7 months a meteor was going to strike Earth, wiping out life as we know it, then they should not keep that a secret -- even though intelligence gathering had proven that telling the world's population would cause mass hysteria, chaos, and suffering -- they should just let people run riot for 7 months raping, pillaging, and murdering, 'cause it's all truthful and principled and shit?

And please, so not use this arguement of mine and come back with: but people could come to some higher philosophical understanding and they would all buy each other a Coke and sing and hug...because if you believe that, I have some things to sell you (and people who are all up with Assange are, from what I have seen, thinking along those lines: no more secrets means everyone will learn to love and be honest with one another!...sucker please).

54 Assange views the USA as led by a criminal government. His goal is to make it harder for our government to operate. He believes that the more open the various parts of our government is with the other parts, the more effectively they can carry out their "criminal" activity. Therefore, he wants to make it as difficult as possible for the parts of the government to work with each other by exposing everything he can get his hands on. Knowing this, our government, in his view, will be forced to do less sharing, making it much more difficult for it to be successful in its ventures.

The killing of our allies is a feature, not a bug. By making it harder for anyone to work with us, we are less effective in carrying out our foreign policy.

Assange is a threat to the security of the USA, and should be killed as soon as it can be arranged.

59 @47: "That's why we elect leaders" is a perfectly reasonable response, but then my question is: why stop at matters of "national security"? If someone truly believes that the government is more competent to make a decision in policy area X (where X is not national security), do you have any non-arbitrary reason for why the government shouldn't be given unfettered discretion in policy making, or, at the very least, in information disclosure?

90 @69 - I don't think that I, or anyone else, should have any sort of unilateral power at all. I think that the rules of the system should take individual discretion out of the equation. I'd be in favor of a rule that prohibited government secrecy altogether, yes, but there's good arguments for rulesets that clearly define limited areas of acceptable secrecy (troop movements, etc...).

71  Well, continuing with my cherry picked arguement, you mean to tell me you couldn't "meet your death in a manner most befitting" in the few hours prior?  I suppose there would be all that estate planning to do.//

And by the way: my arguement was cherry picked for a reason: it was pretty over the top but pointed to the concept of doing something for the greater good.  Now, governments keeping secrets on surface does not look like the greater good...but sometimes reality isn't black and white.  There are probably things that the "average folks" probably should know; hopefully through the process of voting we have a government worth trusting with those secrets; although it isn't always the case, true.  Still, how would knowledge of any of it do any good for the "average folks" -- is this helping the "average folks" of Zimbabwe?  Did it help the "average folks" of Afghanistan? Does it help the "average folks" of anyplace else?

Or did it get Julie and his groupies another moment of pud pulling while fantasizing themselves to be Fox, Scully, and 007 for another day?  A little bit of the old feeling important after all?

107 @85: Bill Buckley, when arguing with Murray Rothbard, would complain that a Libertarian or Anarchist would look at the situation in Vietnam, and as opposed to proposing a solution, go sit down with the soldier in the field, and talk to them about the moral necessity of private roads (I'm paraphrasing a bit, but that's the gist).
Rothbard replied that yes, that's exactly what should be done, because the situation's already fucked beyond repair anyway, and maybe you can do some little bit of good explaining to an average solider just how it is he ended up in a rice field in Vietnam in the first place, and that way, maybe if he got home, he'd realize just how corrupt the state, all states, truly are, and refuse to be a part of it.

What if I want to go do all the shit I've never done? What if I wanna go rapin? Why the fuck should you get to make that decision for me? Do you also support doctors not telling their patients if they've got a fatal disease?
The problem with your "average folks" formulation is the question of who gets to decide what constitutes "average". The only delimiter between "average" and "non-average" we have in this situation is who they work for. If it's for Uncle Sam, they're non-average, if it's for their Uncle Tony, they're average. That seems to me to be an arbitrary and unhelpful distinction that puts all the power over information in the hands of the group with the biggest incentive to keep the populace as ignorant as possible.
Of course the Afghans and Zimbabweans aren't better off b/c of WikiLeaks. They're so far down the scale of fucked that it's completely irrelevant for them. We're better off for it though.

Your argument is asinine.  It's the kind of thing that someone with the mental sophistication of a nine year old comes up with.  When it comes to national defense there are secrets that must be kept.  And since the government is responsible for national defense, who else is there to trust with those secrets?

My male cousin in FL is rich and successful, and married to the meanest, fucking harridan on planet earth.  My sister believes that he must have killed someone while at FSU, and his "wife" knows the details.  Thus, in spite of having no children, he's stayed married to the world's ugliest, meanest, cruelest bitch ever.

At my dad's funeral, the bitch bragged to my husband that she was a Razor Back cheerleader.  D'oh responded, brilliantly, "Well, that explains everything.  Soooeeeeh Pig!"

simplistic, childish.

I don't know if you were paying much attention lately, but in the last election there was a considerable amount of "unrest", just not the kind you and your ilk cause.

No, you cause people to question reality by making them think that the government is keeping secrets about who killed the twin towers or who flew a plane into JFK's head.  Idiots like you need to be put in rooms with padded walls so you can't hurt yourselves.

202 @171 - No, of course bad things would exist without government, they'd just be overall less bad than the bad caused by government. Nor do I think that anarchism is an acceptable solution for everyone. I do think that everyone should strive as much as possible towards absolute individual autonomy, and away from slavery, and it's helpful to know which direction you need to be pointed in.
Yes, that does make me simple and childish, doesn't it? Much more so than an automatic trust in government and belief in the goodness of the state. I mean, a child is someone who's capable of taking care of themselves, and doesn't need a daddy making all their decisions for them, right?
And really, if you're incapable of making the distinction between "There is a very good, non-zero possibility that government is fucking us in ways that we don't even know about" and "TOWER SEVEN LOLZ", then you're no longer worth the effort.

228 @183: I have my head up my ass? The history of government is a history of oppression and incompetence, wherever you want to put your finger on the timeline. The ONE constant with government is that it ALWAYS fucks up the job, and usually kicks you in the dick on its way out the door. After looking at thousands of years of government that failed to be even basically competent at much of anything other than killing their own citizens in one way or another, I decide that I don't trust government, and I have my head up my ass.

249 @233 - Yes, if you get to define anarchism as a complete lack of order, that'd be chaos. I don't think you get to do that, though, without evaluating the various flavors of ordered anarchism that have been proposed. I'm sure that I can come up with fairly reasonable responses (or at least, reasonable in the context of someone who's willing to honestly engage argument) to whatever objections you may have. Now, you might not accept my underlying argument that, in the situations where my responses are non-perfect, that the cost of government would still be higher, but I think that's a fair point of dissent.

Lawmakers voted last year to allow the seizure of cards after two to three years as a way to raise about $80 million and help balance the state's budget.

But in November, a federal judge temporarily struck down the law.

The Record of Bergen County reports the state isn't giving up though. State treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff has told a judge that the state will appeal the earlier ruling.

---

I gather the treasurer is a Christie appointee and a Republican.

I guess I reserve judgment/outrage until I learn more about why the federal judge temporarily struck down the law.  Was that a good/sound legal decision or not?

293 289 267...Seems pretty problematic to me...the Christie for POTUS fan club will have some splaining to do

Well, I guess I'd want to know more about the law the legislature passed and Christie's role in that.  My recollection is he's dealing with a very blue state house. I think NJ was one of the few states where there was no net (or appreciable, anyway) gain of red seats in their state legislature.

So if the law is on the books - and if it's a good law (has sound legal standing) and the judge's ruling was a (legally) bad ruling - then I would not be surprised for a lawyer-turned-Governor who is trying to balance his budget to pursue an appeal.

He's a lawyer.  Even when I read his statements on illegal immigration, they're very legalistic sounding.  He mostly opined about the federal vs state roles in immigration in the statement that got him into trouble with some conservatives.

The latest anti-gun charge is 15 years old (that campaign commercial), so I'm not too worked up about it.  And he did just commute the sentence of the guy with the gun conviction, as requested by the guy's lawyers.  But obviously he's for gun control, which I realize is a big hurdle from some people.

310 DMXRoid,  let's take a little trip back in history.

Before the United States entered the Second World War,  Churchill and Roosevelt had conversations about aid, refugees,  what Hitler was planning,  etc.

These were Top Secret conversations,  because it was imperative for the safety of the UK that Hitler think that the British were isolated.  Had Hitler found out about those conversations,  he probably would have sent the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe to demolish Britain.  Fortunately,  he thought he was safe ignoring Britain for a while and went after Stalin instead.

Are you suggesting that this information should have been released?

326 319 Should have been a full pardon not a commutation. That guy gets stuck with a felony on his record for life

He requested the commutation.  The lawyer explained in an interview that was podcast on some NRA site (I can try to dig up the link if you haven't listened to it) that the pardon would take too long and they were completely confident in overturning the conviction.  And one reason that they are confident is that Christie basically fired (did not re-appoint) the judge because the judge had a history of horrible rulings.

Honestly, I know Christie is not an ideal guy on gun rights because he is for gun control, but he did do the right thing in that case.

384 @347: Anarchism as the reverse of statism doesn't imply anarchism as the reverse of order. Order and statism do not necessarily go together. History is full of example after example where those two things are completely in opposition to eachother. I think that if you're going to define anarchism as chaos, I get to define democracy as slavery, in that I only have whatever freedoms I have at the will of some master who controls my destiny, and whom I can only hope to influence in order to retain whatever autonomy he currently grants me.
If you're going to use the Constitution as your bright line between legit and illigit government power, that doesn't make you not-statist, it just means that your preferred version of the state is less sucky than most. That doesn't make it GOOD. There's plenty of things in Article 1, Section 8 that could come right out without doing any damage to humanity.
The argument that governance on the State level is superior to governance at the Federal level is only true at a pragmatic level, and only sometimes at that. Resolving the question of the division of authority on the basis of pragmatism leaves too much leeway on the part of government to make the kind of subjective evaluations that result in the growth of the state and the destruction of individual freedom.
Furthermore, why should my freedoms depend on my persuasiveness? Obviously I understand that in a statist reality, they DO, but why should they? Why should I need 50% of the populace to agree with me in order to exercise my autonomy if my behavior doesn't hurt them directly? That methodology didn't work out particularly well for huge chunks of the population in the US in the past, I don't see why it would going forward.
### I must admit that I don't read much about anarchy, but the idea of ordered anarchy/anarchism seems quite odd and a misnomer, at best. In any event, I'm pretty sure that my concept of decent governmental organization requires more structure than you would allow for. ###
I think it seems odd because you're unfamiliar with it. The 2009 Economics Nobel went to a couple of people who've been studying the very question of spontaneous order in the absence of state intervention for decades, for example. There's tons of literature out there about it, and really, we see examples of spontaneous order in pretty much every human interaction. Any time you have more than two people interacting without a cop, that's a little microcosm of the bigger concept.

408 Well shoot I gotta go, so let me answer my own question for the benefit of DMX.  People stop at stop signs even when nobody's around because we live in a culture that respects the rule of law.  Teh Evil State doesn't need to enforce the law absofuckinglutely everywhere because we do it anyway - for just laws, that is.  But if we didn't live in a culture that respected the rule of law, then no amount of legislating would matter - we'd just break whatever law we felt like, and it would take a fucking police state to enforce all the laws.  Such a place would not be free.  The lesson I learn from this example is that what matters most is not the goodness or badness of the government, but the underlying culture.  A culture with traditional values of respect for family, laws, liberty, etc. will yield a government reflecting those values.  Libertarians don't realize this and think that it's the government that's causing all the problems.  The government is only a reflection.

412 @421: I have no problem with individuals enforcing their property rights through violence. That's a fantastic idea. There's apparently a misunderstanding, I'm not a believer in the idea that humanity can all love each other, I believe that one of the reasons people would behave in the absence of a government is because otherwise, they'd get shot in the face by the people they'd try to fuck with. Of course, in that arrangement, the individual would be way more responsible for their own protection than they are now, but there would still be solutions. Private protective agencies are just one example.

As for ordered anarchy (hahahaha) and "spontaneous order" in response to a lack of order:

Do you know anything of the Taliban's rise to power in Afghanistan?

Hell, have you even read up on the Donner party and accounts of shipwreck survivors? (but I repeat my Lord of the Flies remark).

History has shown that people do attempt to generate some sort of spontaneous order in cases of dire lack of the same -- it usually isn't at all pretty.  Definitely not a more attractive alternative to a stable government, warts and all.

444 jackoffs like this guy automatically assume they'd somehow be on the top of the anarchy food chain, or at least an equal to all those around them.

reality is, when it's come down to the survival of my band vs your band, you lose.

the only reason I don't do that now, is we have a government and a system of laws that makes society work. I don't need to go raze your little commune, take your shit, throw your fat ass in the smokehouse with a little lemon honey glaze, and imprison your women so I can increase the size of my band later.  That government that I, and a few millions like me elected, keep losers like you from becoming long pork on a massive scale. I want that government in place keeping the peace, and occasionally blowing some third world saber rattling country back into the stone age, because the alternative you think you want is fucking abhorrent.

But if you feel you want to try living in that other world, you might want to take a hard look around your room right now. You have print outs off your second rate date site, I have a couple dozen large caliber weapons. You're what's called easy meat. You might want to think about that.

The year is 1947
        >
        >         Some of you will recall that on July 8, 1947, a little over 60 years ago, witnesses claim that an unidentified flying object (UFO) with five aliens aboard crashed onto a sheep and mule ranch just outside Roswell , New Mexico . This is a well known incident that many say has long been covered up by the U.S. Air mForce and other federal agencies and organizations.
        >
        >         However, what you may NOT know is that in the month of April 1948, nine months after that historic day, the following people were born:

471 @438:
### Actually, no. Individual privacy isn't about protecting us from the state, it's a matter of culture that we value it. Other cultures don't value privacy. But my privacy isn't for "protection from the government" purposes. It's about my personal freedom. ### You think there's no correlation between privacy and freedom from the government? Look at any tyranny, and you'll find no privacy. It's got nothing to do with culture, the fact is that a government who can pry into all of your business has severely curtailed your freedom. If you don't believe that's the case, then I assume you support the kind of mass camera deployment that the British have engaged in?
### Actually, my privacy is threatened more from busybodies down the street than the government. ### Not really. The busybodies down your street can't access your bank accounts to see what you've been buying, or your video rental or library book history, or your tax records, or put cameras on your property, or go through your house and then turn you in for the gram of weed on your table, or search you and confiscate your cash. They're just annoying.
### Government secrecy has nothing to do with any notion that it has a "right to privacy". Government secrecy is part of the necessary defense of the nation and operations that any other entity engages in. ###
First off, let's not pretend that government secrecy is merely limited to matters that would negatively impact national security. If anything, the Wikileaks dumps proved that. The cables released to date have been, for the most part, fucking harmless other than causing some embarrassment, and yet they were all classified in one way or another.
Second, I was using the comparison to explain why my requirement that the government be transparent does not translate into a requirement that I personally open up every aspect of my life to whomever asks. I can't tax people, I'm not the agency with a monopoly on the legitimate use of force, I have no obligation to disclose anything about myself to another private citizen. The government asserts its monopoly on force, so it has to behave more openly than the rest of us.
### The State doesn't have any "freedom". ### That's true. I should have said "power", my bad.

In the context where I have to accept the fact that there's already statism and that there's nothing I can do about it, sure, keep wartime shit secret. Keep it all secret. You fucking made the statist bed, you sleep in it, not my fault. 526  Why should they take your money protecting you (and thus risking themselves), then they can join me and get your money anyway (with little risk, as you are a poor shot...everyone in my family isn't...and have knowledge of more than just guns)? With the promise of more money too?

Since you're wanting to play this game.

DMXroid,

Have you ever studied a pre-state society in any depth, so that you have an idea of how they actually function? I think doing so might be a real eye-opener. Can I suggest Medieval Iceland, an almost perfect libertarian society (law, private property, silver used as currency by weight, no executives, no military, no police force), as a beginning point? There are a large number of Icelandic family sagas available in translation, enjoyable reading, and Jesse Byock has a really nice book called Viking Age Iceland that explains how the society functioned. Go on to study other early medieval societies form there.

Hint: It was pretty violent, and there wasn't much individual autonomy. Being "kinless" is a pretty unpleasant fate when your safety depends on having a family to support you in a blood-feud, but families also control their members to avoid being dragged into trouble uncessarily.

535 @567: Assange is not Wikileaks, he's the public face of WIkileaks. It's not the same thing. I can simultaneously thing that Julian Assange is a douchebag (which he is) and that Wikileaks is doing good work (which they are), and there's nothing contradictory or cowardly about it, unless by "cowardly" you mean "disagrees with me."
Re: not having an exact proscription for the perfect anarchist community, why do I have to? The whole benefit of putting the government out of business is that people with an incentive to find a solution will do so. Yes, private banks will probably be where it starts, but who am I to say that someone else won't come up with a better idea and sell people on it? Why would I want to constrain myself like some sort of bullshit legislator and make rules for how people can conduct private business? Not my motherfucking job man. I mean, there's plenty of literature out there about private money, but you're not going to read it, and I'm not going to explain it all to you because that'd take to long, so "the market will work it out" is a convenient shorthand for "Go bone up on the underlying ideas before you come play in the big kids sandbox."
Re: time training us, I meant repetition, asshat. And driving schools teach you how to drive according to the law, not according to rational rules for driving. Absent the law, you don't think that driving schools would teach people to caution when coming to an intersection? It's not like if you don't have the government making rules, people just go retarded.
I don't have to have a principled response to the Churchill scenario because the scenario is constructed in such a way that the principles I espouse have already been ignored well past the point of being relevant, so why would I try to constrain myself to a framework of thought that has no function in the cherry picked example?

Posted by: DMXRoid at January 04, 2011 07:03 PM (vd872)

536 Second, Wikileaks didn't drop a dime on us to the Nazis, they leaked some fucking diplomatic cables.

If I'm playing in a statist world where "pragmatic" subjective considerations trump rule based decision making, I can just argue that the damage done by a leak of diplomatic cables is less than the damage done by keeping them secret.

This is why slavery persisted in the ancient world.  Which would you rather be, a slave or a free man (or woman) without property or protection?  If someone did you an injustice, you might -- might -- get an audience with the local governor.  More than likely, if somebody, say, kills your child and you aren't important you have the option of taking retribution or moving on with your life.

Most Libertarians at least go back to the founding and recognize the need for limited government to perform certain key functions.  But this asshat thinks he knows better than civilization.

562 @578: In fact, I have, and while 11th century Iceland is hardly an example of awesomeness, it does provide some interesting insight into possible ways to handle disputes without an overarching authority. However, there are far more recent examples than that of state-less societies. There's an awesome book out called "The Art of Not Being Governed" that goes into the history of civilizations without states.
I may not have been clear about this, but I'm not supporting anarchism as a model for the United States to switch to. I don't think it would work at all, people here are too dependent upon the state, and have been trained by 235 years of statism to behave that way. However, that 300 million people, or even 6 billion people, could not function without a government doesn't mean that nobody can, or that there's no hope for the descendants of those who are currently incapable of functioning without the long arm of Daddy behind them at all times.

In a scenario where I am forced to accept the existence of the state, and have to give you the ability to set all the preconditions, I will not even attempt to use non-statist principles to solve a problem the statists created. If you would like to go further back, and go over the original causes of the problems that the statists crated, then yes, sure, anarchism is a valid response framework. But you are not allowed to buttonhole me into your framework as though it were valid and then expect me to use mine to get you out of the shit you shoveled on yourself. use psychiatrists and sociologists to measure the “relative happiness” of workers or their “despondence and grumpiness” as a way to assess their trustworthiness.

Trying to prevent more WikiLeaks embarrassments, the Obama administration is telling federal agencies to take aggressive new steps to prevent leaks of classified documents, including instituting “insider threat” programs to ferret out disgruntled employees who might be inclined to leak classified documents, NBC News has learned.

As part of these programs, agency officials are being asked to figure out ways to “detect behavioral changes” among employees who might have access to classified documents.

586 @630 - Waterhead, it's not my fault if conditional logic flies past you, but let me try it one more time.
IF we get to start at 0
THEN I will defend anarchist principles
ELSE IF I have to accept statism
THEN I will argue in favor of the most limited state possible, but I feel free to make pragmatic exceptions to rules, because the principle I'm fundamentally defending has already been violated to the point where I'd only ever be able to defend half of it.
So, with that laid out, YES, in the scenario where I am ONLY able to act in the limited circumstance you present me, and can do nothing to affect the preceding events, I think it was the right thing to do for Churchill to not go "Hey Nazis, guess what" because the consequences of that would have been severe. I also think it was OK for Wikileaks to leak the cables, because the damage is not severe.

I wonder if he realizes that some concept of "the state" has been in existence since the first civilized societies (you know 'roid, the things that made us into something other than little, piddling groups of hunter gatherer nomads and cavemen who lived truly short, brutish, and hard existences)?

Hell, even the cavemen had a bit of the concept of "the state"...even some of the lower animals have a concept of social hierarchy and power structure.

I wonder if he realizes that "keeping secrets" has been part and parcel of that? (yes, even lower animals keep secrets of a sort, if we really wanted to stretch the concept, and why not given the stretches in thinking already supplied by Mr. Roid -- usually they involvie bluffing to avoid confrontations, as those can be risky).

No...this is all about "stickin' it to da Man" (which is like so cool and rebellious and free and shit).  Newsflash: you're da Man too fool (to paraphrase a Tool song).

Sadly, this is most of contemporary Libertarianism in a nutshell.

You know the name of Julian Assange, but you don't know the names of the hundreds of thousands on all seven continents who are waiting to help his cause. He is another innocent man the US are after, just like they are after all of us. We are all J. A. and this is not just a phrase

(The text you pretend you know appeared in the Guardian on 8 dec, Assange was in prison then. Both Guardian and WL redacted the text, so it is not one man's fault.
And there's another thing: Mugabe has tried to kill his opponent number of times so far, he will hardly need WL to do so, he already knows his enemy. WL is not Zimbabwe's enemy, it is their dictatorship.)

DMX,

Are you talking about actual, in-the-wild societies, or utopian communities?

Any real functioning society has to be able to defend itself (Iceland was only as stateless as it was because it was immune to foreign incursions) and to deal with malcontents permanently. That is one of the reasons why socialism sometimes is workable on a small scale, but never on a big: Small, utopian communities can simply expel those who refuse to cooperate and are protected by the state in which they happen to reside, but nations must force people to conform and protect themselves.

You've already stated you're jacking off to your boyfriend Assange over releasing diplomatic cables because states shouldn't have secrets. Then you stated you're fine with keeping state secrets because it will stop Nazis. So which is it, fucknuts? Or is Assange your arbiter of what should be released and what not? Remember, I don't fucking care that you think your bullshit "ordered anarchy" that you're too chickenshit to live yourself would "solve" this problem. I had hopes that they could get it together to shore up the limited-government movement, but they've become pathological.

And one of the key "features" of a pathological way of thinking is that it isn't really open to discussion, i.e. no matter how high the post count gets, the absolutists aren't going to reconsider their opinions.
