— Purple Avenger Easy for him to say as he makes a hasty exit stage left.
...Obama's chief political strategist, senior adviser, close friend, late-night sounding board and comedic foil is done at the White House. This was always his plan: two years of insider work from his office near Obama's in the West Wing, then home to family and more freedom in Chicago...So, you're joined at the hip with this Obama guy riding him to the top, so naturally your "plan" was always to bail on him when he needs you the most facing the most hostile political environment he's ever had to face and dump the mess in 2nd stringer Plouff's lap to try and sort out? Right. OK. Sure.
..."Probably more than any time in my lifetime, it's an unfathomable race," Axelrod said of the field of potential opponents...OK, my bad. I was obviously too naive and accepting above, this sounds a lot more like it. Translation: "This isn't an election we're going to be able to astroturf or bullshit our way through, or rig. It might be hard, we could actually lose. Those ignorant serfs want some steak along with their sizzle, but this Obama guy is kinda light on substance, and I don't have a fracking clue how to fix that sort of problem."
"We're going to play big...We're certainly not going to hunker down."As Tonto said when the shit got kinda deep for the Lone Ranger: "What you mean "we" white man?
The Axelturfer is taking a powder, beating feet, getting out of Dodge, making himself scarce, and otherwise insulating himself from aftershocks, consequences and of course sharply declining book deal payoffs should Obama lose in 2012. Losers and their inside story are generally interesting to political strategists, as bad examples and how not to do it, publishers and the general public OTOH aren't as fascinated by the story of losers.

Obama is a narcissist. I'm quite sure he believes broad hand waving and platitudes equate to the heavy lifting to make something happen. Narcissists are like that - stating something to them is like making it happen. Then when it doesn't happen, others will be blamed for the failure.

You know... maybe we should all pose as Obama-bots and email him telling him how awesome he is and how much of thumb in the eye to those evil Rethuglicans it would be if he just didn't hire a new political director and managed his own campaign. Then he could show how awesome he is at managing things (those evil 'thuglicans still think he's a terrible executive) while also shaming them into slashing their own staffs (staves?) by saving on that salary...
That would be a train-wreck worth watching if he tried that...

Enthusiastic youth voters -- many engaged in politics for the first time -- helped fuel Obama's 2008 presidential bid. How will Obama win the votes of young voters who may face tough employment prospects?
"We need to communicate vigorously with them," Axelrod said. "...there are obvious things that we have done that are meaningful to younger people that go to their particular interests. I think younger people more readily than anybody should appreciate what the president -- and will appreciate what the president -- was saying the other night, about how you build the future and what we need to do to secure the kind of future that they are going to live in. I think we have a strong case to make. But we just have to make it."
...
"And so, well, [former President] Clinton repositioned himself and, you know, [Obama] must be repositioning himself. I think what we've done is we've returned to first principles. So much of what he's done is a reflection of things that he said for a long time.
"If we were guilty of anything the first two years, it was we were getting so in the weeds of governance that we did not articulate consistently our principles, our values and our vision. But the principles, values and vision that he is projecting now are completely consistent," Axelrod said, referring to Obama speeches at the Democratic National Convention in Boston and to a college in central Illinois, "with the guy who stood, who spoke to the convention in 2004, who spoke at the Knox College commencement in 2005."

I think the narcissist Obama's version of hunkering down is trying to govern in campaign mode. Its the only thing he knows how to do.
In this regard, Obama is more incompetent than Carter who at least understood the electioneering had to end, and the administrating begin after the election was won. Carter understood what the job would actually entail, even though he was poor at executing it. I don't think Obama is comfortable with this executive position at all, nor do I think he has a full appreciation of what the job specs were/are.

Based on what do you find him to be RINOish?
So far the only knock I've found against him is that he signed into a consortium of western states on carbon trading (WIC). I think Utah may have pulled out of it (under Herbert).
Reading circa 2008 news articles about him, I'm finding him called a "centrist" who angered some conservatives because of three things: he loosened our liquor laws here, supported civil unions for gays, and the WIC thing. He was re-elected with 78% of the vote.
I am still researching how the WIC thing came about -- but I will say we have a serious smog problem in this state in the winter time b/c of the geography of our most populated valleys.
He paid lip service to a path to citizenship for illegals (similar to Palin's statements from around that same time), but did not veto any legislation on addressing illegal aliens. Obviously he's spotless on guns. Also reportedly fine on abortion restrictions and reported good on taxes in the local media (so far as I've seen).

"Another 2012 possibility for me, who is not on this list, is Jon Huntsman. He is a rare governor with foreign policy experience, as well as private sector. He is suitably conservative on most issues. As a former missionary in Taiwan, he speaks fluent Mandarin. President Obama appointed him as ambassador to China. Huntsman has been awarded six honorary doctorate degrees, so he's frightfully intelligent. He graduated from University of Utah and got his bachelor's at U Penn. But he dropped out of high school to join a rock band, loves metal and played with REO Speedwagon at a state fair. As a Mormon, Glenn Beck has already spoken favorably about him as a primary candidate. He'd easily win NV.
Before people worry that he's too moderate after working in the Obama administration, he was a White House staff assistant during the Reagan years, Bush Sr.'s Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce and ambassador to Singapore and a Deputy US Trade Representative under W. This guy has serious policy chops, and I look forward to hearing his ideas."

OT, but it's been a while since we've had any decent Assmunch dickery to bash, so I just have to share.
From the UK's Daily Mail:
'They're informants... if they get killed, they deserve it': New book reveals shocking disregard of Julian Assange towards Afghans named in WikiLeaks cables
Now I only believe so much when it comes to hearsay, but given Asshat's generally blase attitude towards the safety of anyone but himself, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find this is true. I certainly wouldn't call it "shocking" coming from the twisted piece of excrement.
Also:
As he tried to flee to his Norfolk bolt-hole last November he dressed up as an elderly woman to avoid capture.
James Ball, who works for WikiLeaks, says in The Guardian's book 'You can't imagine how ridiculous it was. He'd stayed dressed up as an old woman for more than two hours.'
AWESOME.

Tattoo, Was that from one of our Beehive morons?
I remember some criticism about him here over an effort to have school vouchers in our state. My recollection was that he was criticized for failing to promote the pro-voucher side when it came up to a vote. The guy on the other side of the issue (some business guy - perhaps the Overstock.com guy - who was paying the bills for the pro-voucher side) was really vicious about Huntsman in the press, so it looked kind of personal.
Anyway, my read was Huntsman chose to not wade in on that issue because our public schools are grossly underfunded on a per capita basis (lots of kids per family, low wages in Utah) so a voucher program could be a problem.

One thing I'm curious about is how Jr's environmental policies jibe with his family's business interests. On the one hand, that reassures me that he is not an eco-nazi, even if he needs educating on AGW. On the other hand, when he took the Amb in China, at the time I did some reading and was a little concerned there was a potl for conflict of interest because of the ongoing activities of the Huntsman Corp in the far east.
I don't mean to imply I'm pushing him, but I am a little frustrated by the misinformation I've been reading about him around the intertubes and the laughable characterization that he's some big social liberal.
FWIW, I've read in the local media (from 2008 archives) that Huntsman Jr, unlike his dad (who is an Area Seventy - LDS church official), describes himself as not being a very devout Mormon. I think Mitt is a more devout Mormon than Huntsman Jr. I don't think this is a walk-back to appease evangelicals, but really how he sees himself.

That's why I pointed out his private sector experience. Huntsman Corporation is a global chemical company with 11,000 employees and revenues of approximately $8 billion.
Huntsman serves a variety of end markets, the largest of which is consumer durables and non-durables, followed by paints and coatings, insulation and other construction materials, chemicals, energy and aerospace.
Huntsman holds global leadership positions in MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate), polyurethane catalysts, epoxy adhesives, epoxy powder coating systems, aerospace composites, electrical insulating materials, textile effect chemicals, polyetheramines, ethylene and propylene carbonates, and maleic anhydride. First, the U is an excellent state university.
Second, almost every Mormon male transfers. They start out their schooling, then go on their mission, then come back. It's actually a pain in the ass for the state universities here because our retention rates look so bad. The really telling thing is he got into Penn and didn't wind up at BYU.

Your "argument" for his admission into Penn was that he got into a local university and then transferred to Penn... plus the building name.
Eliminate the transfer argument for a moment, acknowledge that his dad has his name on buildings, endowments, and programs in many universities - including BYU - and ask yourself if your argument makes sense.
Or do you really think Wharton is that shoddy of a school?

No, I don't necessarily "want" him to, but I think if for some reason another candidate pops up as the nominee, I'd like to have the option.
I'm really undecided about Huntsman. My main interest now is seeing if he really does resign (which the local media are now saying he's going to do, too) and learning as much factual information about his record as I can and seeing what his platform/priorities would be.
Right now it seems like there's a strong undercurrent of "purity" running through the GOP. Those folks are less impressed by what I'd call qualifications/resume and more concerned with perfection in what a candidate says. If that continues, then I suspect Huntsman has no chance and that the GOP will lose in 2012.

And our professional colleagues from other schools shared similar stories. So I'm curious where you've worked that you've seen otherwise.

If there is a market for their products being used in creating windmills, they're not profiting from subsidies. Unless Hunjtsman Corps is also in bed with the insidious sports equipment lobby. My argument was that perhaps he has some insight into alternative energy production besides ethanol subsidies, and that makes him more open-minded than just drilling, which will be a tough sell to independents after the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
