1 Topic for discussion - who is a decent *nationwide* bank, if any? IIRC BofA lost (or settled) another lawsuit recently, but it's probably small fries compared to Countrywide. It had something to do with overdraft fees (and how they applied charges and credits during the course of the day to maximize overdraft fees).

36 From Forbes:

Who would have thought that Bank of AmericaÂ’s most precious asset would end up being Merrill Lynch, the investment firm that was on deathÂ’s doorstep in 2008 until the bank stepped in and bought it?

Well, thatÂ’s certainly the case today about 2.5 years after the acquisition. As BofA struggles with record losses and an ugly stock performance Merrill LynchÂ’s investment bank and brokerage business are generating profits that the bank desperately needs.

But that marriage might be trouble. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Bank of America would consider issuing a separate class of shares tied to MerrillÂ’s performance in an effort to raise capital. The idea of creating so-called Merrill tracking stock was in response to a request from the the Federal Reserve which asked for contingency plans if things got worse for the bank.

Wachovia was on the ropes after a couple of major Obama bundlers got rich selling them subprime mortgages.  So WF had to buy them to save them.

That said, I had an account with First Union originally and my mortgage was through WF after being sold a couple times so having them in the same place is handy.

So I'm like "Here's a link to a ZeroHedge article."  Then they are like, "Go kill yourself."  So I'm like, "Here's a link to Toots McCain at the Daily Beast."  And she really reminds me of me, you know.  And then they are like, "Seriously, go kill yourself."  And that really hurts my feeling, you know.  Here I am, sharing the results of my tireless online searches and what I hear from my many dear friends, and these people just don't value me.  It's like I'm on this team here, but every time the team bus stops somewhere for meals and bathroom breaks, they all just stake me out on the ground and leave a bowl for passers-by to toss their loose change in after they have their way me.  It is so terribly unfair.  I am better than them, but they just won't see it.  God, are you still there?

God:

117  It had something to do with overdraft fees (and how they applied charges and credits during the course of the day to maximize overdraft fees).

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at September 02, 2011 05:59 PM (bxiXv)

I believe they would pull the larger charges first so that if you made a few little charges before the larger one, they'd get taken out after the overdraft occurred and they'd charge you the overdraft fee on every single one.

That happened to me once - I made a couple nickel and dime purchases (less than $5) without realizing my account had been emptied (a big bill came through sometime after I checked my balance that morning and I hadn't realized it) and got charged a large fee for each one ($30/piece?  Or was it higher?).  Pain in the ass and there was no way to argue about it - or to tell them to just deny your card, which would have been preferred.

That was another thing - they enrolled everyone into overdraft protection by default - instead of denying charges as the default.

I'd rather be embarassed that the card was denied than have to pay $100 or so in fees.

And I do hope they get rid of Merril Lynch.  My account got ported over there and now I can't get a damn thing done without jumping through hoops - and nothing can be solved while at a bank branch.  It's always a phone call and then haggling.  Biggest pain in my ass ever.  Can't even replace a debit card without talking to several people about it.

123 With respect and good wishes to the workaday B of A employees - the ones who actually make it work - B of A is as bloated as any business could be. It has scores, possibly hundreds, of overpaid do-nothing executive wonks whose claims to fame are going to the right meetings and kissing the right asses.

I work for a smallish entrepreneurial sport, and we brought in one such B of A exec. She was a "legend" in sports marketing and sponsorship, and lasted all of 8 months.

I won't even go into the damage she did in that small period of time.

Fact is, large corporations have these people, who are written about in the press, hit all the right cocktail parties, and "control" large numbers of actual workers, who do. Nothing.

If B of A or any organization wants to make cuts, it shouldn't be the struggling single parents who get no glory, nor should it be the actual executive decision makers, who work 120-hour weeks and age prematurely. If they want to trim fat. they need to look at the six-digit VPs of nothingness right outside their doors.

By the way, said "legend" is now chief of staff for the Democratic National Convention. They deserve her.

141 It's because of the ATM's...

But seriously, I first opened up a Bof A checking account as a Freshman in Santa Fe, in the mid 1990s

I thought it would be pretty cool to do my banking at the grocrery store but Noooo, I couldn't just set up a checking account and promise to use the ATM whenever possible rather than bother a teller.

I, seriously, had to make two seperate appointments so that some asshole in ABQ could "approve" my account live via their glitchy telecom system.

"So, do you not trust the manager here?  Is he shifty or what?"

"Why would you say that?"

"I dunno, you're the ones who don't think I should not trust this banker until I talk to someone in Albuquerque via Tee-Vee.

Me and my accounts are from a local bank, in Illinois.  I had no idea that this guy here *points off screen* in Santa Fe was potentially so shifty"

"Mam, we are just trying to make your banking experience more..."

"STOP right there!  You have done NOTHING but make banking with you a needless trial."

"Open up a fucking real branch and let me open up a checking and savings account WITHOUT having to conference with ABQ on your crappy computer connection or don't. And if you DARE try to show me a video about "Banking in the Future" I will stab this pen into the manager's throat"

"You shouldn't have said that...I could get fired!"

"Eh, I would have stabbed myself in the ear first.  But you know that!"

"Yeah, but HQ is gonna be pissed."

"But are WE cool? As far as accounts and stuff?"

"Of course!  Man, I'm sorry.  I really shouldn't have put you through all that."

"You shouldn't be asked to put anyone through all that, no matter what their balance..."

That laser analogy thing bugs me -- I spent 21 years in that industry.

Lasers are NOT focused.
You need optics (lens and/or mirror) to get that.
It's all about optics.

Lasers operate at only a very very narrow wavelength.  A thousandth of a millionth of a meter determines whether it can operate or not.

So, thinking about it, I guess the analogy holds.
Obama is narrow minded and is all about the optics.

186 Drive up ATMs with braille still freak me out.

You're not supposed to notice it but it makes you worry when you DON'T see someone selling pencils on the street corner!

Holy Crap!  All the Blind Guys must be DRIVING!

Probably to this ATM, with the braille.  There's no way they're gonna see that light turn red.

Oh, Holy Mother, please intercede on behalf of all the innocents at this intersection, for they know not where they tread.

Please be merciful to the children punted aside by the bumpers of the blind as they sojourn to this ATM and comfort their parents in their suffering.

Let us most fervently pray for a smooth trip home by the afflicted.

Unmarred  by suspicious bumps that could be curbs or speed bumps or bodies.

196 44...exactly...we are truly in bizzaro world when the federal government forces banks to make loans they don't really want to make, gives them billions to help them recover when said loans (predictably) go poof, and then sue those banks for costing the federal government money.

And, I was in the industry at the height of the sub-prime boom.  I can assure you with some certainty that BOA, Wells, and many "A paper" banks did not want to lend money through some of the programs Fannie and Freddie forced on them.  Yes, for a time they made gobs of money on the programs and no doubt high-fived in the board rooms as earnings and profits were reviewed.  But, without being "encouraged" by Fannie and Freddie, they would not have entered that market.

The CRA loans (Community Reinvestment Act) should have been called the CRAP loans.

I don't understand how Chris Dodd and Barney Frank sleep at night, knowing full well the destruction and doom they fostered through their social engineering banking.

203 In our neighborhood, ATMs hang out at the playground at all hours of the day and night. Kids here are terrified of 'em. Their parents have been subjected to harassing calls from modems late at night after they've called the cops to roust them out.
Last night I caught three of them rummaging through our trash, looking for credit card applications. When I stepped out of our garage to confront them, one slipped in behind me and stole our shredder. Now I'll have to take the applications to work for shredding until Staples has a sale.
Right now I hear the sound of glass breaking over there. Another weekend of drunken mechanical revelry on tap, I'm afraid.

B of A thought it was being shrewd by picking up CW's best-in-class automated underwriting system (which Fannie Mae basically stole and then forced all other lenders to use), servicing platform, and sales force for a song. They never fuck up my direct deposits, and I have five branches near here, so until I have a really compelling reason to, I'm not going to change over. Now do I have my mortgage there? Fuck no. I wish I could have kept it at the bank that did the construction loan and converted it to a nice 30 year fixed. But they resold it to GMAC.

221 There is a second, unreported terror in our nation's airports. TSA's pedophile grab-assers is the first, of course. No, what I'm talking about are the mechanized gang wars in the concourses between the ticket kiosks - "The Tiks" - and ATMs - "The Bloodsuckers".
Both gangs hate the "greasers", as they call us humans because of our oily fingers. Trouble's a-brewin' because both sides are converting en masse to the Religion of Peas, whose tenets require that their women cover themselves for modesty's sake. Half the kiosks and half the ATMS in airports will be rendered unusable and the males will defend their honor to the death.
The next time you're in an airport and you hear, "Get your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!" spoken loudly, it won't be from a "Planet of the Apes" marathon playing on the TVs. It will be the start of "Cardageddon", as the 'chines call it.

224 If we conservatives EVER allow the MSM to live down having compared Obama to GOD, we have no one but us to blame the next time a socialist is elected. Some guy named Smerkonish on MSNBC voiced his preference for Hunstman because HE believes "global warming is REAL!," while Perry doesn't believe in evolution. Now, actually that is not what Perry said. Peery's position, in effect, is that the religious sensibilities of millions of people should not be blithely ignored. However... The REAL issue, it seems to me, is not the utterly irrelevant and inconsequential belief or disbelief Perry has regarding evolution vs. creationism, but Obama's continuing non-scientific belief in a failed economic theory discredited decades ago. Unlike a belief in Creationism, Obama's belief in Socialism is destroying this country. And the whole time, the MSM has seen that as a positively divine attribute of Obama.

266 Amadeo Gianinni, the founder of Bank of Italy and later BOA was featured in the book "They Made America"  They grew by aggressively strong-arming other banks to either merge or else.

Every small bank we were with in CT got snarfed up by Fleet, and then finally Fleet got inhaled by BOA.  The folks were nice, but their service fees were higher than others as well as their loans, which were half a point higher than People's.

The final straw was when the free checking account became "unfree" and they started siphoning off fees each month.  When I was in there trying to get that straightened out, a customer passed by having told a teller he did NOT want to open an account.  The manager sprang up from our meeting and cornered him, saying "It's not like we are going to steal your money!!"  When she got back all I had to do was stare at her and they refunded all of our back charges.

269 258 I can't wait to learn that the liberal Tools have installed a Muslim foot bath in the US Capitol building. And don't think all the radical anti-Christian Atheists would object to that.

Well when Sharia is allowed in the US thanks to the libtards at some point I'm sure they'll be the first infidels to take advantage of slavery being re-instituted through Sharia to take care of all their housekeeping needs without resorting to even paying less than minimum wage to illegals.

/sarc, but sadly I could potentially see this happening given how fucked up society has gotten about ignoring the flaws of other cultures in the name of self flagellation and multiculturalism.

Geller, Spencer, and now BigFurHat at IOTW simply DO NOT KNOW WHO THE ENEMY IS. Oh, they say they know, they can even point them out in a line-up. But guess what, if you spend this much hostile fire on allies, you have No God Damn Idea who the enemy is. I f*cking hate idiot blog wars. This all started with Geller labeling Perry a Dhimmi, which was pathetically over-the-top and counterproductive. Now it's "all hands on deck, abandon rationality!" Let's see how many other political allies we can drive a wedge between before the election, maybe everybody's God Damn hypochondriac outrage can keep Obama in office and finally put an end to that pesky USA. Dicks.

273 As a side note to paying off a mortgage, make sure you follow up with your county to verify that the bank has sent a release of lien on your property. I had to call Citibank a half dozen times over nine months to get them to do what they are supposed to do. it's especially important the way banks are selling off mortgages these days.

I have been ripped and ripped good here for supporting John Boehner, who is also a personal friend of mine. I got over it. IOTW is too witty and fun for me to worry about getting in a pissing match with the commenters here. Same goes for AOS. This is really a none issue with me and it should go away. I am voting against Obama. Obama , the Leftist Democrats and the communist thug unions are the enemy. Families can argue but they are still family. At AOS nice rack is a compliment amongst we commenters, as long as you are a girl. Being politically correct is not held in high esteem. Back in the <good | bad> old days, I linked a post that Geller had, because it was relevant to whatever post Chuckles had put up.

I was warned to NEVER mention her or link to her.
