— Ace Most of the teams that looked like contenders last week are actually behind now.

Here's a funny video about a forgotten hero from the early days of pro football.

A big WHEW! I wasn't sure if I'd get the backup QB I had requested so I did a quick swap out for McCown last week. When I got the QB I wanted, I let McCown go.

31 On the last thread about the media: Here's what's going to happen - the media is going to dump O'Dipshit and say, "Okay right wing assholes, you're right, we didn't vet this twerp properly. Guess what we're going to do to make up for it. Cram a microscope up the R candidate until it's light shines through his nostrils...and you told us to do it.
So business as usual then.

Best Halloween costume ever: A co-worker wore a white shirt and tie with a beautiful navy suit jacket with a press badge tucked in the pocket. Once you cut through the crowd to see him up close, he was wearing bikini bottoms, thigh highs and women's shoes.
Not surprisingly, he was the first drunk to pass out that night and we took lots of compromising photos of him.

And, I wasn't being sarcastic with the VS remark. Many years ago I watched a "making of" video about the SI swimsuit edition. One of the models was also a VS model. She was in a tiny bikini in the freezing cold in some place like Alaska. She was being photographed in a very similar pose and these little old overweight women walked by and remarked about her back-fat.
It must have been 15 years since I saw that and I still remember it for its absurdity.

Yesterdays 'Day of rage'protest report in condenced form.
At William Street, they were blocked from proceeding toward the stock exchange, and the march ended in front of a Greek Revival building housing Cipriani Wall Street. Patrons on a second-floor balcony peered down.
As some of the patrons laughed and raised drinks, the protesters responded by pointing at them and chanting “pay your share.”

Just my two centavos, the lady in question has the perfect body tone.
Workin' on a bit of a pot belly, can't count her ribs and a bodacious ass. With the twisting she's doing, that fold is perfectly excusable and probably was only visible for the one tenth of a second it took for the camera to capture it.
Homos.

The Jags haven't had a game blacked out since the second to last game of the 2009 season.
The Bucs, who I believe won 10 games last year, had all their games blacked out last year, and will this year too.
The Chargers, who have had much more success on the field than the Jags, have been blacked out.
Just wanted to clear that up.

Well 2009 was around the last time I was really paying any attention to game blackouts. Didn't they actually reduce their seating around 2009 in an effort to stop blackouts?
Posted by: buzzion at September 18, 2011 01:23 PM (GULKT)
Yeah, Mr. Diversity, Sir, I'll stop. Glad I'm not getting the game. Got a sweet little kid who lives next door who probably shouldn't hear all the bad words I'd be screaming if I was.

I thought there was one b/o last year but I am clearly wrong. But, as you pointed out, bigger cities with better team records have also had trouble. Considering the size of Jax, I think we do pretty well.
One thing I haven't been happy with over the years has been letting go of some of the players while they were not yet out of the game: McCardell comes to mind.
The original Thunder.

Just wanted to clear that up.
I was a season ticket holder from day one until last season when I lost my job and couldn't justify the big bucks anymore. I got to watch the Jags demolish Miami in the playoffs from the Club seats. Damn, what a game that was.
Posted by: Tommy Gunnarson at September 18, 2011 01:26 PM (ybA9f)
"To be fair, Wayne Weaver buys a lot of tickets when they're in danger of being blacked out."
So do other owners. The Glazers, who own the Bucs, admitted as much three years ago. But when a team has 20,000 tickets to sell for one game to avoid a blackout, owners wind up losing more money than would make having the game shown on local TV.
The NFL allows owners to buy up to 17,000 single game tickets per year. For the regular season, that average out to about 2,000 tickets a game. If a team is truly struggling to sell tickets, they're going to have multiple blackouts, no matter what.

Posted by: Oldsailor's poet at September 18, 2011 01:33 PM (ZDUD4)
They actually reduced their seating in the early 00's, because the stadium was too large for the market. After they got the team, Wayne Weaver wanted a stadium that seated 65k. But the Jacksonville city fathers wanted to keep the FL-GA game in town, and for that they needed a stadium that could seat 80,000. For Jags games, capacity is about 67,000.
Yes, in 2009, the team had 9 blackouts. The city was embarrassed. That was how Touchdown Jacksonville got started. TD Jax, lead by former Jag Tony Boselli, aggressively markets the team in the community, and they've done a terrific job.
By the way, in fairness, I am not ruling out blackouts this year. People are very frustrated with Jack Del Rio. It's only my opinion, but I feel he adds nothing to the team.

I figure that Green Bay, New England, New York (both), Dallas, Chicago, Indy (with Manning) and maybe Washington and Denver are teams that probably never have to be worried about blackouts for games.

Diatomaceous earth! I talked to the master gardener at my local county cooperative extension office because my garden has been completely organic and I kind of wanted to keep it that way. I wasn't completely opposed to chemicals but preferred to try other stuff first, mostly because of the dog. I'd tried boiling water. That works (or at least encourages them to leave the area) but I was going to need a LOT of water.
I took a long stick and disturbed the next and sprinkled them with the
dust. They kept moving around a little bit but were much slower. From everything I'd read about the diatomaceous earth, I thought it might take a while (or several applications) for it to work. Three hours after putting it on one of the piles, there was no sign of life. It's much cheaper than the chemicals and is so safe I could eat it (not planning on trying it).

From Wikipedia: Diatomaceous earth consists of fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate.

I thought someone said the spread was 3 and thus a push?
Indeed it was. Had the new kid reached out just a bit more...
Still, I'll take it. Oh, and if Jay Cutler, Rex Grossman, or Kyle Orton are the answer, it was a stupid question.

Some pretty exciting football games today. Shaking my head at Oakland/Bills. Ref comes out to a half-empty stadium to announce that they've reviewed the last play that beat the Raiders and yes, it is a TD? This would be funny if it wasn't so damn stupid.

Also, the exoskeletons act like bunches of teeny, tiny razor blades and they cut the critters making them lose fluids. The moisture/humidity thing is a problem but it's very inexpensive and I bought a couple of bags.

Boric acid will do the same thing (works great on fleas and cockroaches). You can buy the fancy, high-dollar kind, or you can just buy a box of 20-Mule Team Borax and it'll do the same thing. Super cheap.

Orton did alright by me tonight. Not a superstar, but well enough that, so far, I'm not regretting the decision to bench Eli.

Tony Moeaki and then Eric Berry out for the season. Now Jamaal Charles may have a torn ligament and end up on IR. Time to think of playing for Andrew Luck if Charles is out for the season.

Chiefs are completely hapless and looked lost out there. I feel bad for them but then I remember that they took a chance on a guy who never really even played QB in college. I hope they do get Luck next year. I think Dawson was the last true franchise QB that team ever had.

--Goes to show the value of a supporting cast, given how well he did in 2008 with the Patriots. Still, with a good RB and now Jim Zorn coaching him he should have improved. If Charles is gone for the season we'll never know (at least this year) but I'm happy to get Luck. On the other hand, Ricky Stanzi may be a diamond in the rough, but no way the Chiefs should pass on Luck if they can get him.
