— andy Ace really hates rattling the tip jar, so every now and then the cobloggers do so on his behalf. This is one of those times, but we're going to do it a little differently.
The little, lonely PayPal button over there on the left side of the blog remains option A, and Ace swore he wouldn't blow all the dough on hookers and booze. This time.
But we're instituting a new program here at the HQ that lets you do something you'd do anyway, namely order stuff from Amazon.com, and simultaneously kick some dough towards the head Ewok.
It's simple. Just use the search widget below the fold instead of going to Amazon's home page to do your Black Friday shopping.
Ace is working on making this a permanent feature of the blog that'll have a search widget somewhere on the main page and direct links (like in Monty's Sunday Book Thread) that hit his account. But you elder morons remember the New Site, right? Yeah, you get the idea ... I'll take the over on 2013.
HARD TIMES ADDENDUM from lauraw: Seriously, guys? King Moron needs some new bling-bling. I think you can agree that this look is just starting to get a bit dated.

That's a several-years-old picture of our fuzzy, prolific content-provider, by the way.
I can't show you what he looks like now because it's shameful.
That hat-feather broke off to a nub ages ago and was never replaced, customs officials confiscated the leopard skin and fined the solid gold dollar-sign right off his chest, and the metal in his mouth was recently traded for five cases of Ramen noodles, twenty-four e-cig refills, and an urgently needed flea dip.
The man is a walking shambles, barely differentiated from the hobos he hunts for food, and in desperate danger of being mistaken for prey.
If you're going to shop on Amazon anyway, please do it from here, and know that you are helping out a guy who looks like a giant talking woodchuck.
OH - and who also writes things that inform you and make you laugh. Either/Or. I think the woodchuck thing is cooler, but YMMV.
UPDATE TO THE UPDATE [DiT]: Hookers and blow don't grow on trees.
As far as I know.
UPDATE TO THE UPDATE UPDATE [rdbrewer]: I see in comments some are suggesting turning off adblock and allowing all blocked items on the page. Not necessary. If you have Firefox, click on the little red stop sign shaped button at the lower left in the Firefox frame. Click on "open blockable items" in the box that comes up. Find the two or three Amazon widget items. Right click on them one by one and hit "disable filter" in the box that comes up. That way you don't have to disable adblock for everything on the page.
Open thread in the comments.
Enter your product search in the text box in the top part of the Amazon thing below and press "Go". Selecting the item will take you to Amazon's site in a separate window.
Note: If you use Adblock, it needs to be disabled for this to work. (Thanks to GnuBreed in the comments)

Plus, as happened here in CA, those affiliates are no longer paying income taxes on those earnings. One estimate I saw said the state lost about $265 Million in tax revenue on affiliate earnings.
The state of California is so good at shooting itself in the foot it doesn't even need to take off its shoes to target a specific toe.

It should work so long as you have cookies enabled in your browser. AFAIK, when you go to Amazon from an affiliate link it creates a single session cookie that lasts as long as you remain within the Amazon domain.

First you have to go to adblock "options" and disable adblock. Then go to the noscript options and "allow all this page" in that order. Then you need to reload the page.

Ok, I want to help, but I have a couple of questions. Let's say I search "black friday 2011", then I see a 42 inch tv, I click it and it takes me to the Amazon page, but it is not the 42 inch tv that I already was looking at earlier today. Now, the question .... if I browse away, or search using the Amazon page that has been presented, do you guys still get your commission on the sale? I will be happy to look up model numbers and whatnot prior to populating the search box on your page, if that is required in order to get you paid, but I would rather not ... being human and all, you know like really lazy and basically slothful to the core. Next question ... I suppose you WILL make that widget MUCH larger at some point in the future, RIGHT!? Burning out my eyeballs to help support your excellent site would not be my first choice of things to do (remember, lazy-slothful-averse to squinting or leaning forward-etc.). Let's shop!! I shop, therefore I am!

You know what the real shitter of this kind of situation is? The little bastard is most likely a minor (that's the new paradigm for home burglaries). So these are the consequences:
1. If an adult touches him they are in serious trouble, so your bother can't beat the shit out of him.
2. If your State is like mine he will be charged under some type of "youthful offender law". He will NOT go to jail and most likely will not be punished at all even if he has a rap sheet a mile long.
3. When he turns 21 that rap sheet will dispensed into the void.
These laws were designed for the youth of 100 years ago, not the little hardened bastards we have now.

Has anyone ever managed to buy five of these mega-deals? They are a very clear bait-and-switch, and they never stock enough inventory. Either that or the TVs are new stock of a 3 year old model. But look, this years model is only a bit more expensive and so much better...
Black Friday is a joke. An absolute joke. There are no real deals to be had for the vast vast majority of everyone who puts their lives at risk today. These stores want to get in the black, not give shit away for nothing. There's no profit to be had for offering a big TV for 100 bucks, so it's clear there are other motives at play. Yet the rubes can't see through it.
I bet there's a strong correlation between Black Friday participants and Obama voters.

First, I will use the Amazon link for Ace.
As for Black Friday. I shop it on-line and my kids do the in-store thing too. It depends on what you're looking for. They've gotten great deala on major appliances, washer/dryer and freezer, all name brands and warrantied. They don't go for the toys and clothes, plenty of sales later. And they skip the big box stores and Best Buy and go to chains like HH Gregg where they get the same price on a better brand and no crowds. They did get one of the $99 Wiis on-line this year and some other things. And unless you have money to burn, looking for a sale is not being a "rube" or an "Obama voter." They and I are very Conservative, they have organized Tea Party events and a 912 group. But I imagine you can back up that "correlation" claim of yours.

One thing different this year that I've noticed. Crowd control. That Waffle vid. wouldn't happen now. No Large Box Retail Store would ever allow that to happen these days. They are certainly aware of the bad publicity that comes from scenes like that, and no one wants that to happen at their store.

First, I said "I bet.." Wouldn't be the first time someone used a hypothetical on this site. I was stating a hypothesis, not a statement of fact, and pointing out one known exception to the generalization doesn't make it any less valid as a hypothesis. There will always be exceptions. The word "correllation" implies that it is acknowledged that there will be exceptions.
Second, I didn't say anything about online shopping. Obviously, since I mentioned safety issues, my comment didn't reflect online shopping at all.
Third, based on their behavior, your kids are the exception, not the rule. They don't go to the big box stores, they don't camp out, they look for very specific things they need. This is not typical Black Friday behavior. And, I bet those same deals could be had on other days. The idea of a great deal happening exclusively on Black Friday is pretty rare - once-in-a-lifetime deals exist, but in such limited quantities that you really do need to physically shove your way to the front to get them, either by camping out or trampling people. This is why people do it - they know the deals are so rare they have to take extraordinary measures to get them. I question the rationality of anyone who feels they need to do that to get a once-in-a-lifetime price on material good. That is a clear case of priorities being out of whack.
The rest of the "bargains" are typical sale prices. Sometimes they are decent sales, but nothing extraordinary. Like I said, these retailers are trying to get into the black, not give things away for free. Most of the stuff on sale is either barely marked down or marked up prior to discount.
Don't believe me? Choose an item, not one of the showcase bait-and-switch items, that seems like a great deal today, then check it in a few weeks, and then just after the new year. When the excess inventory buildup needs to be liquidated, the same deals will be available on comparable items, if not better.
Fourth, there's nothing wrong with trying to save a buck, especially when you're in the market for something anyway. However, there's something very deranged about camping out, trampling people, using pepper-spray on people, fighting over limited inventory, driving like maniacs, and in all other ways acting like a SCOAMF just to save a few bucks on a material good. And, the retailers have encouraged this behavior year after year with more and more obvious tactics. They are desperate to rake in the cash, and they'll overlook a lot of hooliganism to get it.
I just can't relate to the mindset of anyone who would subject themselves to that sort of environment, even if they aren't doing the horrible things like the worst of the lot. I don't get it and never will. I'm as far from wealthy as it gets, but the almighty sale price is a false idol if there ever was one.
Is it worth being t-boned by an idiot in a hurry to get to the next
doorbuster sale, just to save a few bucks on a tv or appliance?
THAT is where my bet about the Obama voters comes in. This Black Friday stuff just isn't rational behavior most of the time.

Posted by: Deanna at November 25, 2011 12:26 PM (jCfoL)
That was the BF price at WalMart. My daughter tried to get one last night at midnight when she went to work but they were all gone already.
Normal price is 299.

And, I bet those same deals could be had on other days. The idea of a great deal happening exclusively on Black Friday is pretty rare - once-in-a-lifetime deals exist, but in such limited quantities that you really do need to physically shove your way to the front to get them, either by camping out or trampling people.
Posted by: grognard at November 25, 2011 12:27 PM
Well, as a former store manager(among other careers), yes it is true that some deals are really "once in a lifetime." The big box stores will always have loss leaders, but Black Friday is often an exception because the manufacturers co-operate and usually offer a deal for a short time frame as well. Smaller chains or chains with smaller or select inventory...jewelry, clothing, electronics, etc. will seldom have really big loss leaders. They can't afford it. So their Black Friday deals usually feature an item that is very low, often a loss. Naturally retailers hope you come in and purchase other items as well to make up for the loss. Again, big box stores don't need to worry as much because of the large volume of inventory and variety of items. People will return to Walmart and Target again in a few days to shop for other items they need, while the specialty store may not see that customer again for some time.
As for the stampede, I think there's an exaggeration by the media as to how many of these incidents actually occur. Friends that have managed/worked for big box stores have never had a serious problem at their store or heard of one other than the news.
And you know, it's not new either. I can recall as a child, back in the dark ages, my mother standing in line and other women crowding to get into a Filene's Basement sale...trust me you would not want to get in their way. LOL

Amazon has been screwing around with the deal and people are pretty pissed off. The originally offered it this morning with a $50 credit or gift card(didn't see it.) but withdrew it and no one got to purchase. Now it pops up again for last deal tonight but sounds like same deal as Microsoft has. Considering it has been almost impossible to get many of the Lightning deals at Amazon lately, waiting lists are a joke.

I checked Amazon after talking to daughter and it said $295. No BF tag on it.
Microsoft is the only one that had it for the original BF price of 199.99 that I have seen thanks to you. The order went through, no shipping but did charge State sales tax.

_________
Heh. I've had a need for another SDHC card, so I popped into Staples to take advantage of their "$5 if you buy it before noon!" deal on a 4GB card. They only had one. Then I wound up standing in line for 5 minutes or so while the cashier tried to sell an extended warranty on a digital camera to the folks in line in front of me.
Apparently my "can I *please* give you this money so I can get the fuck back in my car?" look is not intimidating enough.

I'll just have to give up a few bottles of the Woodford Reserve and do more of the cheap stuff. No big deal.

You may not think you want it but the system is severely downgraded without it, especially since a huge amount of the best software is only sold as downloads. The 4 GB of flash memory in the base unit can fill up very quickly between downloads and save games.

I was looking at that. Will usb hard drives work or memory sticks?
Posted by: Vic at November 25, 2011 09:33 AM (YdQQY)
You can use memory sticks in a very limited fashion. You can allocate up to 16 GB to be used as a dedicated partition for Xbox 360 content. It will not be readable on anything else due to DRM encrypting the partition.
The FAQs at Xbox.com cover the details. In general, you really want the hard to use the machine's full potential. The big firmware update on December 6 is adding a bunch of new functionality that will still more reasons for it. Mainly the IPTV support.

Posted by: Vic at November 25, 2011 09:59 AM (YdQQY)
It could be worse. Before the current 'slim' model, the Arcade no-hard drive models were entirely dependent on proprietary memory cards that were even more overpriced compared to SD cards and flash drives. It placed severe constraints on access to download purchases and demos, and in turn caused Microsoft to severely limit the size of the games offered through the download channel.
But the transition to online content poses some complicated problems for console makers. They still need the support of big retailers to sell the system but the systems have no profit margin. So retailers do it for the game and accessory sales, where margins are pretty good. But this means some items can end up being very over priced compared to other versions of the same thing. Microsoft gives retailers a really big margin on the hard drives because their primary use is to buy stuff through a channel that bypasses those same retailers. So they need some motive to carry the product.
Sony chose to avoid this by only selling the PS3 with a hard drive. The down side of that is you cannot take full advantage of cheap notebook drives because you cannot get a less expensive PS3 with no drive and add your own. You can only upgrade the drive that came with it. Likewise, Nintendo uses standard SD cards as the external memory for the Wii but limits what types of content can be stored there. If the built-in 512 MB becomes full with content that can only live there, you have a problem.

Based on my grandkids ages 6 and 10, you shouldn't have a problem. If he wants to play games there are plenty out there to buy that are reasonably priced, many under $20 for older ones which will be new to him, without downloading any. The kinect games are newer and will be more, so find him one he will really like. It was still a very good price as far as game consoles go.
Posted by: Deanna at November 25, 2011 11:02 AM (jCfoL)
Anyway we'll have to see. It comes with one game and he'll take a while to get tired of that.
Posted by: Vic at November 25, 2011 11:12 AM (YdQQY)
Heh- just bought one this morning locally- Microcenter also has them for $199, and there's a store 10 min from my house.
Got there (tired and quite hungover) at 9:15am; they opened at 8am. Must've been 50 people in line outside the store; amazingly (for me) I actually stood in it for 10 minutes till I got in.
The Kinect thingy is pretty darned cool, though I'm not sure how much I'll use it. The entire point of getting a console (I have a reasonably fast PC and video card) was to veg out on the couch and play games.

About fuckin' time you got an Amazon link.
I just ordered seven Blu-Rays two minutes ago through here. Too bad you missed the order I put in last week.

"AoS T-Shirts" is kind of a sore point from early in the blog history. For some reason, the word "fiasco" keeps coming up.
