— CAC Courtesy Bloomberg News, the latest poll on the President, the economy, and his re-election chances show a solid base of support for President Obama, so I suppose we might as well accept the media meme that it is safer to bet on his re-election than on his defeat:

Oh yeah, that other half of the poll results, that sort of stings.
In case our resident trolls wish to opine that Bloomberg used a biased sample, Rasmussen currently pegs the nation at about R+1.5, whereas the sample breakdown here was 27R-32D-39I (and 2% totally clueless as usual).
There is of course bad news for Republicans here- some responses showing an electorate that is weary of actual hard cuts to entitlements- but not by the margins you would assume after the President's repeated trashing of Ryan and the vilification of conservative cutting proposals. Fear of a Republican candidate "going too far" however is far outweighed by retarded economic growth.
The economy is the only thing that matters, despite Democratic attempts at deflection. Anyone arguing otherwise, that a persistantly horrible economy won't be enough to sink the President, is presented with the following fish slap to the face:
Perhaps my assumption of a hard shift in 1.1% of the electorate away from the President is too timid. Under my current postulation, the President already loses North Carolina, Indiana, Florida, and Nebraska's rogue congressional district. If the above numbers hold, he will be lucky to break 200 electoral votes.

And this will determine how they vote in 2012. Yes, the left will roll out enough of the government class to avoid a wipe out in the deep blue states, just like in 2010.
But right now, this is Obama's challenrger's election to lose. It can be done - but it will take a McCainish level of incompetence to pull it off.

If we aren't careful, we will see a repeat of 2004 - where Republican squishes and liberals manage to throw away their mandate - and in 2012, that would probably doom us to serious political instability as I think we have one last chance to do something about the creeping national socialist state...

I've been looking at the map and thinking the Nebraska district, North Carolina, Virginia, and Indiana almost assuredly go back Republican. Florida and Ohio also, in a "probably" category. If those line up we're at 266 and need only a single extra state to win, with several swing states to choose from.

It depends what happens with NoVA vs. the rest of the state.
Northern VA is heavily blue because so many government parasites live in areas like Arlington. If the blue elements in the southern part of the state turn out and/or they get a huge turnout at universities like last time, Obama can win. I don't see either happening, though, considering how badly the Dems did in the 2009 Governor's race and the total lack of enthusiasm by the young for Bambi this time around.

Brandon, I don't see the economy improving but only getting worse. Of course, the MFM will tell us that we are doing better, they have already declared "The Greatest Recession Since The Great Depression" as being over when it's not. We still have yet to see the true costs of Dodd/Frank and Obamacare to fully kick in. Both of those bills are job killers as well as creators of hardship for ordinary Americans.
WSJ had an article on Sat. how Dodd/Frank's causing retailers to limit the amount of money customers can get in a debit card "cash back" transaction to 20 bucks. They are also starting to implement "minimum purchase" policies before customers are allowed to pay for things with plastic instead of cash. These are things that are going to cause hardship for a lot of people (especially lower income types). It is essential that the Republicans tie Democrat policies to these inconveniences/hardships that regular Americans are experiencing. The media will not report it, and the Republicans need to get that message out loud and clear.

Rick Perry
Cap and Trade/AGWIn 2009 he trashed the Crap and Tax Bill
Note that there are multiple cases of him trashing that bill in 2009.
He is suing the EPA over “bad science”. I think he and TX are the only State that has done this.
Strong positive here
Gun ControlLOL, what can you say? He carries a weapon and shoots coyotes while jogging and he is from TX. If he came out pro-gun control they would run him out of State.
Human Events article on this subject on Perry's site.
He wears a Gun Dealer shirt on Fox
He gets praises from the NRA (A+ rating)
Nuff, said, strong positive here
Small government in general (spending and regulation)
TaxesOn The Issues has him speaking out against taxes in general
He is also list as a member of the Tea Party movement
When the TX Comptroller causes Amazon to leave the State over the “so-called” internet loophole (which isn’t) he went ballistic. He called for legislation that restored the ruling that distribution centers with no storefront would be forced to collect sales taxes. Unfortunately the quest for taxes in the State legislature overrode him.
Some of the liberal “fact check” organizations like to ding him for signing into law small tax hike bills on stuff like fireworks to fund different projects but I don’t see that as an issue.
I will give him a positive on the tax issue.
SpendingI can’t find a whole lot on his policies for spending. It looks like that he is against big spending in general but it is hard to track down any specifics. I understand that TX has a huge deficit right now so there had to be some “spending” going on. I will have to give him a neutral here mostly for lack of information.
Government RegulationI will have to say that his record here is poor to mixed. As evidenced above, he is strongly against burdensome Washington regulations and control over the States. But there are instances that really hit him hard in TX.
First the infamous Trans-Texas Corridor project which he pushed to further the connections through TX from Mexico to Canada. He would use imminent domain to take a massive amount of TX land and fund the project through tolls on the roads. After massive opposition by Texans the legislature passed a bill to defeat it. He vetoed the bill (after returning to the State from overseas) just before the legislature adjourned. It appears he fought hard for this massive project including proposing legislation which would “reform” imminent domain making it EASIER to take land. I have seen posts here by his supporters that say he finally backed off on the deal. I can’t find anything to support that contention. It appears that the massive project was killed first in Washington and then in Texas by the State Legislature. If any of the Morons have any info with links to show anything different from that please let me know and I’ll update this. But to me, this is a MAJOR negative hit.
Another hit is the infamous Gardicil Vaccine via executive order (something we have been killing Obama over). This order created a huge controversy in TX for several reasons. (1) It was done via executive fiat (2) It was expensive costing $360 except for “poor” (3) Social cons didn’t like it over the sexual implications (4) A lot of people worried about the safety of the drug even though it had FDA approval (keep in mind that at the time ALL vaccines were under attack because of the bogus Lancet study.) (5) In addition, there was a huge conflict of interest with the makers of the drug and Perry with implications of cronyism and possible corruption.
His supporters maintain that there was an opt out provision. The problem with that was that it required the parents to request and complete paperwork. IOW, work through a social bureaucracy to maintain your own personal choices. Although we will never know how that would have ultimately worked, we know how it has generally worked in the past (poorly). The legislature passed a bill that killed this requirement and he “allowed” it to go into effect.
My position is kind of mixed on this. I am generally in favor of immunizations, however, in one of this nature it would have been much better to work through the legislature and debate a bill rather than do it via executive fiat. If he had done that these problems would have been avoided. Now we donÂ’t know if killing this was a good deal or not. I have to give him a big negative on this one as well.
I canÂ’t find much else about Texas regulations in general. I did find that he had established some kind of record on the number of vetoes but no details on what he had vetoed.
So in the end on regulations, I have to give him a strong negative. That, in my opinion, pushes him into the negative category for small government. That seems hard to accept for someone who is supposed to be a member of the Tea Party, but that is the way the cookie crumbles.
Socialized HealthcareHe strongly opposes Obamacare and wants it repealed. The Texas AG has joined with the other States in the civil action against the law.
However, much like regulations, he is in favor of the State implementing socialized medicine. He helped establish the childrenÂ’ social healthcare program in Texas.
His best action thus far on health care was the fight to reform Texas medical liability laws.
IÂ’ll give him a positive here, but it is not a strong one.
Border control/AmnestyHis support for the TTC is the first hit here.
His rhetoric is that the Feds need to put boots on the ground to halt illegal immigration and enforce existing law.
He opposed a Texas version of the AZ law saying it is not right for TX.
He has stated he opposes the notion of sanctuary cities and led the fight pushing for the Texas Sanctuary cities bill which ultimately passed.
I could not find any position that he had taken on the 2006 McCain amnesty bill.
It appears he is trying to walk a thin line here to prevent angering TX Hispanics. I give him a neutral here.
AbortionHe is a strong right to life candidate.
He also pushed through a bill requiring TX women to get a sonogram before an abortion. (Good for anti-abortion, bad for regulatory stance).I would rate him as positive here.
Summary
4 positive, 1 negative, 1 neutral
Overall he appears good, but I have some serious concerns on his “small government” bonifides. His stance on border control/amnesty is somewhat weak as well. I can support him as a candidate and he would go on my short list if/when he announces. He is worthy of support, but I would caution the Morons on trying to make him the “Party Savior” for 2012 because the rest of the field is not satisfying their needs.
I do hope the club for growth does a wrap-up on him and is able to get some more info because that is the area that he is getting killed in here.

Geithner: We Need ‘Revenue Increases;' Cutting Deficit by Spending Cuts Alone 'Irresponsible'
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Tuesday that a deal to raise the legal debt limit, which he expects to be completed in the next few weeks, will be only a short-term “down payment” on solving the nation’s debt problem, and that it would be "irresponsible" to reduce the massive federal deficit anticipated over the next ten years with spending cuts alone.

Like it or not, Obama stands for something in many Americans minds. He represents a powerful image of a mixed-race man from a broken home, raised by grandparents and worked his way up thru some of the best schools in the country to become a community leader, a state legislator, a US Senator and now POTUS.
It's a uniquely American success story and the mythology attached to it is VERY powerful, regardless how incompetent the actual man is.
Many Americans will vote for Obama just because it makes them feel good about themselves and the country.

Yup! Like Rush said, when the MFM was lying about how bad the economy was when George W. Bush was in office, people were like "I'm doing ok, but it sounds like other people aren't" and they didn't question the assertion. They just accepted it. Now, like you said, people are in real pain and feeling the pinch. It's hard to say that everything is getting better when so many people are suffering and know other people who are suffering as well.
Out where I live, not too many people are suffering. We're kind of in a bubble. I don't know too many people who have lost jobs and are getting foreclosed on. My area of the country is an anomaly, though. When I went home last summer, it was a different story on the East coast. People were already experiencing hardship there, and they still are now. They are truly hurting.
Meanwhile, they can see a disinterested, detached president who is golfing, vacationing, and partying on their dime. I hope it is all sinking in.

Chavez going will help most of the people of South America and Central America, IMHO, given that Chavez has funded revolutionaries in Colombia while propping up half-assed Marxist regimes in Ecuador, Bolivia, and elsewhere.

Posted by: Brandon In Baton Rouge at June 22, 2011 10:18 AM (UvFnc)
But hasn't NoVA being full of government workers been pretty much the norm for decades? Republicans still won the state regularly every four years, even when they didn't win the Electoral College overall (up until 200
. It did get close a few times, with Carter and Clinton getting within 2% in 1976 and 1996, but Bush 43 won Virginia by about 8 points both times, and the Nixon, Reagan, and 1988 Bush campaigns took it by over 10%.
Still, I agree that enthusiasm is going to be a huge factor. But on their side it's going to be almost entirely shifted from the blissful "We're for Obama! If he wins, he's going to save the world!" of three years ago, which significantly fewer of them believe in any more, into a more panicked "The Republican candidate can't be allowed to win! They're evil! EVIL! And if you don't agree, you're evil too!" That's motivating too, but mostly to the core that's already highly motivated.

You want the perfect pictoral representation of the entitlement mind? I give you Valencia, Spain. Because grown adults wearing diapers to protest government funding cuts is the BEST way to prove you're not a leech on the public teat.
WARNING: The link is to a Netherlands site, so it's in Dutch, and some of the pictures are of the NSFW variety. In particular one full-frontal of a very unhappy man (who has multiple reasons to be unhappy, if I'm any judge).
Here's the Google Translate translation of the pictorial's subheading:

Vic,
The bulk of our budget is healthcare and education. Part of the problem is the legislature circumvented Perry and accepted stimulus money for education. The school districts went nuts with it and hired a buttload of teachers and implemented expensive programs. Now the stimulus money is gone and Texas has to either make up the money for the increased spending or "cut" spending (meaning not increasing spending). As it turned out, they "cut" 4 billion from the education spending. Healthcare costs are problematic, as they are for everyone, but the majority of the "cuts" (62 million) here are to Planned Parenthood, which is a feature, not a bug, IMO. There is also a deliberate shortfall built into the healthcare budget, so that cuts can be made in the future as needed.
Our Constitution requires a balanced budget, and the legislature seems to be achieving this with Perry valiantly keeping their fingers out of the $9 billion rainy day fund.
Overall, Texas is facing a budget crisis, but, IMO it's being handled well under the circumstances and we're still in much better shape than the rest of the country.

From Brandon's link:
During normal times, Mr. Chávez dominates Venezuela's airwaves and public space. He is prone to break into television broadcasts of baseball games and Venezuelans' favorite soap operas to opine at length about matters such as local news events and the latest manifestation of U.S. imperialism.
Perhaps following Mr. Castro's advice to get some rest, Mr. Chávez has been noticeably silent about the week's events in Venezuela, where 5,000 troops are fighting to squelch a prison rebellion that so far has taken some 40 lives.
Romer Guevara, a 41-year-old court bailiff, said he didn't have any problem with Chávez governing from Cuba while recuperating. Mr. Guevara, who said he was politically neutral, added there was one thing he is sure he hasn't missed during Chávez's absence. "We don't like those long speeches," Mr. Guevara said. "We get tired of all that talking. He interrupts our shows all the time. He cuts in all the time when I'm watching baseball or a basketball game."
Bwhahaha! I'd prefer if Oblahblah governed from Cuba too. Oh, and Chavez's mystery "pubic abcess"? Hmmm....
