— Ace At Hot Air, clarifying, I guess, the debate about whether the House would cut $100 billion or just $60 billion (pro-rata for what's left of the fiscal year); the full $100 billion, he says. I think.
But I still think the references to $60 billion are more right. Maybe the House will cut $100 billion, in its own bill. But they probably have just signaled what level of cutting they'll negotiate down to with the Democrat-held Senate.

So would you rather they not cut anything? 'Cause, right now, that the other option.
I'll take $100 Billion. Think about that, regardless of our current deficit, that's a huge number. It does two things: it proves the Republicans are going to (attempt to) keep their promises and it shows they're actually serious about making some cuts- and at that level, its cuts that will (potentially) hurt.
It's the reverse of the Tax Rates question from the end of the year: and they're answering the way I expected. The argument on my side was "Tax rates now, spending cuts later" because we saw spending cuts as less hard to do. This is an extension of that.
Would cutting 1 Trillion from the deficit be better? Yes. It's not going to happen this year or next, though, so don't have that fight. Instead, take the baby steps you can so you're in a better position to get it done when you have a better chance starting in 2013 (assuming the world doesn't end Dec. 2012, but I think we're safe).

I can't remember where I saw or heard it, but a lot of the dems' infatuation with Ocare is waning. If the House really does send up a bill to repeal this clusterfuck, I'm starting to wonder if there might be enough dems in the senate that see 2012 rolling around to really do this thing. Maybe I'm dreaming, maybe not. But I think there might be a possibility.

“With common-sense exceptions for seniors, veterans, and our troops, we will roll back government spending to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout levels, saving us at least $100 billion in the first year alone[.]”
Rep. Ryan when asked about back-tracks (NRO):
“We will be cutting $100 billion-plus over this calendar year when it comes to fiscal year 2011, and our appropriations coming this summer for fiscal year 2012,” he said. “So if you think we’re stopping shy of $100 billion in cuts you’ve got another thing coming.”
Yuval Levin says that is 20% of domestic discretionary spending.

300 billion "off the books" was borrowed.

Math is hard!
I can't remember where I saw or heard it, but a lot of the dems' infatuation with Ocare is waning. That wouldn't be surprising, given that Ocare opposition still polls at about 60%+. The Dems are evil and corrupt, but they aren't politically stupid. They saw the shellacking their brethren had at the voting booths in Nov and enough of the fools may vote to repeal it to save their sorry hides. Alas, Obama will still veto the repeal.
If that scenario comes to pass and Boehner is able to muster enough votes for a Presidential veto override - I will quit my current career path and serve the tanned man all the days of my life.

If the Constitution was amended to reinstate the voting rule that only property (land, home) owners could vote, the political atmosphere in DC would change immediately.

On the first full day of legislative business, House Republicans introduced measures on Wednesday to block the EPA's proposed regulation of greenhouse gases and new rules limiting toxic air emissions from cement factories.
The bills represent what is certain to be a concerted effort by the new House majority to address what they consider to be burdensome environmental rules, part of a broader assault on what Republicans characterize as job-killing regulations from the executive branch.
This is nice, but what would be better would be to just defund the EPA altogether.
Posted by: Vashta Nerada at January 06, 2011 01:54 PM (9T/th)
Provided they sell it as "Sorry, but we're having to cut everything by x%" I don't think it would hurt too much. If they could sell it as "Hey, we defunded all this crap [insert list], and then we still had to cut x% of everything else" that'd be even better.
Of course, that would require them to be savvy enough to get around the Democrats and MFM and straight out to the American People to explain WTF is going on.

Make no mistake. About the best this congress can do is staunch some of the bleeding (and maybe not the worst of it). Even with a Republican President and Senate, we'd have to tread carefully- anything done by Congress can be undone by Congress, so we need to make sure the people are on-board with our full agenda, not just the sound-bites.

We must be prepared to strike. If our bonds stop selling, and they could at any time, cutting the crap will be required, debt limits and constituent wishes notwithstanding.

Posted by: Soona at January 06, 2011 02:10 PM (k8smy)
Agreed (mostly). But that's a communication thing more than a policy thing, at the moment. Remember, we don't own the Senate or the Presidency.
Passing a budget that cuts massively from the unconstitutional growths (even excepting Medicare and SS, for the moment) and explaining it will be a huge step, but it'll get negotiated back to something closer to this $100 Bn anyway- so lets also set the correct expectations.

I agree. It will require very, very careful handling. But SS (especially) and Medicare are both Ponzi schemes. Both are going to fall down eventually no matter what we do. Better a controlled demolition than a random collapse.
The hard part is educating the public about that.

Yeah. Let Ocare put down those people. It's much more merciful.
Posted by: Soona at January 06, 2011 02:17 PM (k8smy)
That's why we save SS etc for last. Use their constituency first, then we can ask them for sacrifice. Who knows, a lot of growth, a bit of inflation, limiting future increases, deregulating, increasing domestic energy production, and cutting the shit out of everything else, might mean we don't even have to cut the existing entitlements.
Just don't increase them.
Like I said, I'm optimistic that running out of money will upset the chess board and the old political paradigm will be replaced.

See, this is the problem, isn't it? It's the problem with entitlements in general, but those that target the elderly (that is: the largest voting bloc in the nation) especially. Once they're on, they don't want off.
Maybe we should make taking SS and Medicare optional: but you have to give up your voting rights if you take them.

Actually, I heard the House was considering sending some entitlement reform bills to Obama, starting with Medicare and Medicaid. But the handful of reps who have discussed it aren't sure what those final bills would look like.
I could tell them exactly what they'd look like. They'd look like type-written words on white pieces of paper.

BTW - you don't have to cut the EPA totally, you just write their budget prohibiting expenditures for the Greenhouse Gas Emissions rules.
