Boehner's Kinda Awesome Speech
— Ace

All the right notes, and I think he means them. What he's stressing is not the details of governance but the central assumption of it -- democracy, where the people rule.

I actually was taken with this as he spoke, and (I've mentioned this before) I tend to hate speeches, finding them pretty meaningless, even as broad announcements of vague goals. Discussing speeches tends to just be rating oratory and stagecraft and guessing what will happen in the polls, not anything important beyond those horserace/public relations considerations. Reviewing speeches, for me, is as important in the scheme of things, even in politics, as reviewing an especially dreary TV show.

But a vigorous, repeated call for the people's representatives to remember who serves who? That's actually pretty important, especially after the summer of 2009, when Democrats gave the entire country a proud middle finger of elitist, entitled disdain.

Here's the video, and some of the best bits in transcripted form:

The people of OhioÂ’s Eighth Congressional District continue to afford me the privilege to serve, for which I am deeply grateful.

We gather here today at a time of great challenges. Nearly one in ten of our neighbors are looking for work. Health care costs are still rising for families and small businesses. Our spending has caught up with us, and our debt will soon eclipse the size of our entire economy. Hard work and tough decisions will be required of the 112th Congress.

No longer can we fall short. No longer can we kick the can down the road. The people voted to end business as usual, and today we begin carrying out their instructions.

In the Catholic faith, we enter into a season of service by having ashes marked on our foreheads. The ashes remind us that life in all its forms is fragile – our time on this Earth, fleeting. As the ashes are delivered, we hear those humbling words: “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

The American people have humbled us. They have refreshed our memories as to just how temporary the privilege to serve is. They have reminded us that everything here is on loan from them. That includes this gavel, which I accept cheerfully and gratefully, knowing I am but its caretaker. After all, this is the peopleÂ’s House. This is their Congress. ItÂ’s about them, not us. What they want is a government that is honest, accountable and responsive to their needs. A government that respects individual liberty, honors our heritage, and bows before the public it serves.

LetÂ’s start with the rules package the House will consider today. If passed, it will change how this institution operates, with an emphasis on real transparency, greater accountability, and a renewed focus on the Constitution.

Our aim will be to give government back to the people. In seeking this goal, we will part with some of the rituals that have come to characterize this institution under majorities Republican and Democratic alike. We will dispense with the conventional wisdom that bigger bills are always better; that fast legislating is good legislating; that allowing additional amendments and open debate makes the legislative process “less efficient” than our forefathers intended.

These misconceptions have been the basis for the rituals of modern Washington. The American people have not been well served by them.

...

Let us now move forward humble in our demeanor, steady in our principles, and dedicated to proving worthy of the trust and confidence that has been placed in us. If we brace ourselves to do our duty, and to do what we say we are going to do, there is no telling what together we can accomplish for the good of this great and honorable nation. More than a country, America is an idea, and it is our job to pass on to our posterity the blessings bestowed to us.

A particularly important quote is over at Hot Air, and a link to hyperliberal toddler Ezra Klein admitting, well, you'll see what he admits.

Klein seems to chalk it up to cunning and stagecraft, but I think it was more than that; maybe I'm a sap, but I think Boehner meant it.

2 I loved how he kept repeating the word "serve" and how he referred to the House as the peoples house.

And just for giggles, I mentioned earlier it would have been fun to see him with a cocktail and smoking a cig at the dais.  The PC crowd would have committed mass suicide.

3 I'm not high on speeches.

What I want to see is these guys getting to work, and not going wobbly as is their usual habit after a short period of time. Get that repeal bill going, begin the process of defunding the crap that needs to be defunded, and get the necessary investigations underway.

The clock has started, now get going.

7 Not a word, not a syllable of it do I believe.  Not until he proves it with actions.  When LackwitCare and the GM bailout and all the other fascist crap passed last year is history, when the federal budget actually gets cut in real dollars for the first time ever, when he spits in Harry the Red's eye and then kicks him in the balls ... then maybe, maybe I'll believe it.

Not before.

8 Very good, but not great

He could have edited out some of the Expected Platitudes and notched up the statement of an overall theme & purpose.  He is head of 'the people's House; but he's also the leader of the Republican Party in the House

Posted by: SantaRosaStan at January 05, 2011 02:34 PM (UqKQV)

9 My greatest disappointment was he didn't "trip" and bash Pelosi in the face with the gavel.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at January 05, 2011 02:34 PM (UOM48)

10 We may have different – sometimes, very different – ideas for how to go about achieving the common good, but it is our shared goal. It is why we serve.

psssh-yeahhhh.

Okay, that's out of the way.  On to a more positive attitude.

Posted by: pep at January 05, 2011 02:35 PM (P18+/)

11 and I think he hit both the Man-Tan and the Dewars before taking the podium

12 Meh, if he would have called on Allen West to accept the gavel for him, then we would have been getting somewhere.

Finally, someone gets it.

After reading all the toe-sucking drivel over at TepidAir, one would think Boner slashed the deficit, killed Osama ObamaScare and shrank government -- not to mention Ending War -- all in one speech.

We've had months -- years! -- of big talk. Now, it's time to walk the walk.

I suggest the perp-walk if the dumb shits do as they always do, which is dither, blather, orate and spend.

Prove me wrong, Congressional numb-nuts. I dare you.

It's why we have a republic, not a democracy.  FFS you'd think the speaker of the house would have that figured out.

Here's the other thing. You always blame Democrats for things like Social Security overspending, but remember how it was Republicans who originally brought us this program, then demonized anyone who tried to cut or privatize it?

85 @ 21, the Kraut got mentioned a while back by Clinton, and he's never been the same.  Every damned comment and column since then has been a shrouded invitation to either Clinton, or even better ODipshit, to give him another shout-out.

I used to love the guy, but recently he has begun to show his true RINO establishment colors.

It's a darned good thing Boehner didn't include any of that old-timey language in his speech.

88 But you knew that boner is a thorn in their side when David made Brian feel uber uncomfortable as he displayed his medical acumen claiming that boner needs a shrink.

It's truly sad that a person is not permitted to display their true emotion.  It's like NOW.....NOW is only for libs/dems and women willing to abort their fetus at will, not for conservative or even republican or even independent women....guess the new behavior code for "men" only applies to libs/dems....not conservatives, or republicans or independents....only libs/dems are allowed to display their emotions....other men are expected to "suck it up"...

Oddly enough, Beck takes a beating even on here for the crying...

With what these guys must know maybe not crying constantly is the real trick...

89 “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” - gets me every Lent - I was tearing up when Boehner spoke because he a truly down to earth guy who made good.  He reminds me of Kipling's poem about a true man and he walks with kings and poor people without ever changing who he is.

I'd like to be alone now with my warm fuzzy Boehner moment.  Thx - I'll take the note off the door when I am thru. LOL

90 I caught a glimpse of an interview with him and his wife and they seemed to have such a lovely relationship....like a normal relationship and she seemed perfectly fine with who he is and his emotion....

I think if more people acknowledged their emotion we might have a better world....

Have to say though....Boner really loves this country and the American people...

So does Paul Ryan....OMG....they showed him walking up the steps of capital hill with a cup of coffee and that magnificent blue shirt and red tie and well fitting suit....and OMG....that man is just the sexiest man alive today...

91 You know, I always thought that if  every respresentative had to spend a week with a normal, run of the mill family gang of felons at Corcoran State Prison it might do them some good.  They are so far removed from our daily struggles.  Make them sleep in the guest room (or on the sofa) solitary, eat with us whatever swill the trusties cook, spend time with us at work making license plates.  Go shopping with us at the jail commissary, using only their $1.29 hour proceeds from work.... no perks, no aides.  Just one of them spending time with a family their peers, and future cellmates. Posted by: jewells45 at January 05, 2011 06:55 PM

See how easy it was to make this worthwhile, jewells45?

Actually, Corcoran isn't what they deserve. Since Alcatraz is closed, San Quentin might be better, especially if the warden would reopen the Hole.

I don't like it when men cry in public.  Maybe I'm old school, but the place where a man cries is in his house in a room by himself.  A crying man in public, in my opinion, gives the impression of emotional and physical weakness.  And these are times when men have to, at least, appear strong.

93 RE: The democracy bit He's playing the hand he has. The House has the shortest terms, and each district is the smallest building block of the the elected federal government. The check/balance over which he presides is the one component that can flip every two years. It flipped fairly decisively, and that was the democracy part of our republic in action. With the other chamber, the executive branch, and a sizable chunk of the fuckheads in black robes abetting that stutterfuck felon in his smash-and-grab lootfest, the Speaker is wise to emphasize the differences that give his office its special legitimacy. What he accomplishes with it is a different story. I am hopeful.

102 One other point, which I posted earlier.

I got a robo call from the RNCC at 6 O'clock today with a recorded message from the Speaker and a short poll and of course the pitch for money.

Told the woman I send a check after I see the follow through.  Told her I'd been watching all day, she was a believer, not a hourly worker.

They are not waiting around to call the donors!

Dat GOOD!

104 Klein seems to chalk it up to cunning and stagecraft, but I think it was more than that; maybe I'm a sap, but I think Boehner meant it.

Klein et al presumed that Tea Party members were astro-turfing because that's what Donks do.  Today he is doubling down on his projection.

Maybe I'm a sap too, but I think what Boehner realizes and what Klein ignores is that if the former tries the same old, same old he can be primaried out [see Bennett (RINO-UT)].

I'm getting a visual here of a tearful John Boehner laying on a couch and telling Gunny Ermey that the color yellow makes him sad.

Doesn't instill much confidence that the new Weeper Of The House is the right man for that job. We could be in even deeper shit here, folks.

But for the time-being I'll give him the benefit of the doubt (and a tissue)and say that it remains to be seen, I suppose.

I'd feel better about John Boehner, though, if those fuck'n birds would stop falling out of the sky.

109 Thought experiment: If Boehner only gave the speech for cynical political purposes and didn't believe a word of it himself, how would you know the difference?

110 114 Thought experiment: If Boehner only gave the speech for cynical political purposes and didn't believe a word of it himself, how would you know the difference?

That's easy.  Try to envision Obama giving the same speech.  He's a great orator, right?  In touch with the American people, we've been told.

Here's the thing.  It is simply unimaginable that Obama could give that speech because Obama and his cronies are so out of touch with the mood of the country they couldn't even write the damned thing.

So either Boehner is a "brazillion" times smarter than the great Nobel Laureate Precedent that he is able to dream up a speech that says just the right things at the right time -- "Impossible!" I hear you say in an outrageous French accent -- or Boehner, like Obama, is running true to his nature.  He's sincere.

118 I believe Mr. Boehner is a good guy. By that I'm saying he is the real deal. The guy is clean and honest. He has never abused the trust placed on him, never bellied up to the public pig trough or brought the pork home to his district or state. He belives in the Constitution and the idea it is government by the people for the people of the people. He comes from humble roots. What more you want to represent you? You know any politician who can claim these bonifieds? And that whole thing about crying, well I got to admire the guy, it isn't weakness, it is passion and belief in something bigger and better than himself. Mr. Boehner has faith. If you got faith you got everything. God Bless him. We could use a lot more men and women like him in our government.
