BREAKING: August Unemployment Rate Steady At 9.1%, ZERO Net Job Creation
— DrewM

The Wall Street Journal says the expectation was for 70,000 jobs to be created. Missed it by that much Chief.

But, but he said he was going to give a speech!

More here.

I just saw a guy on CNBC say the ZERO (ZERO!) net job creation is the first time since 1945 that the government has reported no jobs created in a month. Unprecedented!

Also...June and July job creation numbers revised downward. So what happens when this August report is UNEXPECTEDLY revised down next month?

Liberals are fond of pointing out that Reagan was in bad shape around this time of his term so Obama can still pull it out. Well, as we know Reagan had laid the foundation for a roaring economic comeback. Clearly what Obama has done and failed to do has laid the foundation for a double-dip recession.

4 Barack Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure.

Does this mean the Democrats will allow him to be impeached?  It's not like there isn't plenty of justification, and then their protestations of "We're not with him" might actually gain some traction in 2012.

8 AP's pre-runner was:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Businesses likely shrugged off recession fears and kept hiring in August, although not nearly enough to lower the unemployment rate.

Analysts forecast that the economy added 93,000 jobs last month, down from 117,000 in July. The unemployment rate is expected to stay at 9.1 percent, according to a survey by Factset.

Good lord.  I really need a job.  I mean, I REALLY NEED A JOB.  My credit report looks like a Jackson Pollock painting at this point.  People out here are really panicking.

I keep seeing all these stories in the banking press about hundreds of regulatory jobs being created, and that is what I do, but none of the banks I talk to are even hiring those people - they are instead spending millions in outside legal fees to protect themselves.  And even the law firms are scared to hire, they are just overworking the attorneys they have.  The Dodd-Frank bill has them all tied up in knots, not knowing which loans are legal, not knowing which regulator now has jurisdiction over what activities.  It's a total fucking mess.

I can imagine every other industry has the same fears - why hire someone when you don't know how much their health care is going to cost, you don't know if your bank is going to pull your line of credit because some rookie bank examiner tells them it is too risky to loan you money, you don't know if your operation is going to be raided like Gibson Guitars on some whim of the Justice Department or the Fish and Wildlife Service, etc.

Anyone who cannot see that our government has once again become the "invisible foot" that Reagan spoke of, is just willfully blind.

14 Well, as we know Reagan had laid the foundation for a roaring economic comeback.

Actually, by this point in 1983, the economy was already coming back.  The current economy is trying to find some place to hide before Obama comes back and kicks it some more.

One of the ugly ironies - That union strike of 45,000 Verizon workers worked AGAINST the hiring number! So, whatever the number MIGHT have been was reduced by at least 45,000. Also, this from the AP:

"The weakness in employment was underscored by revisions to the jobs data for June and July. Collectively, those figures were lowered to show 57,000 fewer jobs added. The downward revisions were all in government jobs."

47 Liberals who claim Reagan was at the same place at the same time in his term are morons. But I repeat myself. This is like saying there is not much difference between an F-18 climbing through 10,000 ft on afterburner and Flight 93 passing through 10,000 ft on its way into the fields of PA. Hey, 10,000 ft is 10,000 ft, right? Wrong. It's the vector that's important. Really, the unemployment number isn't all that important relative to the speed and direction of the CHANGE in unemployment, I think.

51 If I were a republican in either of the houses of Congress, and if I chose to attend Obama's speech next Thursday (I know Joe Walsh has already said he won't), I would be waiting for the SCOAMF to say, "There are some here in Congress who are willing to put party ahead of country," or some variation thereof.  And as soon as he said it, I would stand up and walk out.  No theatrics, no overwrought antics - just calmly get up and leave.  And when questioned by reporters after the fact about why I left, and didn't I think it was an insult to the office of the President, I'd say, "Gathering the House and Senate in a joint forum to present a so-called "jobs" speech that is nothing more than a poorly veiled campaign speech of divisive rhetoric is an insult to Congress and to the American people."  And then I'd just walk away.

She probably is the only one- because it's a fantasy.  She'd need an act of Congress to do it, and even a "conservative" congress isn't going to do that.  Certainly not right away.

The fact is, whether we like it or not, we have to fight this incrementally (yes, I know, "we don't have time," I actually agree with you), because if we go too fast, the Republicans just get elected out of office in 2014, and we're back to square one.

So, what most of the candidates are talking about is "reining in" the regulatory agencies and reducing their powers.  That's what we're going to have to settle for, at first.

85 “When I talk to Democrats outside and inside the White House, as I did today what I heard was a slightly different message,” Howard Fineman said on tonight’s “Hardball.” Fineman reveals that the Democratic strategy for the presidential and Congressional elections will be “down and dirty.” “It’s not going to be a ‘Morning in America’ campaign, it’s going to be a darkness at midnight campaign about the Republicans. It’s going to be about the fact that the Republicans in Congress pushed Paul Ryan’s bill Medicare, about how they pushed Cut, Cap and Balance. It’s about how Republicans wanted to dismantle Wall Street reform. It’s going to be about how the Republican presidential candidates have embraced the Tea Party.” “Those are going to be the two central messages of a campaign that’s mostly going to be about attack. I think this is — just like 2008 was in some respects an uplifting campaign, from both sides, this one is going to be down and dirty from the beginning from both sides.” Yeah great reporting. A real scoop. Like we didn’t already know that you jackass liberal.

I applied for a job with the Philly Fed last fall; after an excruciating four hours of interviews, I heard nothing for three months and then, after about 100 phone calls and emails, the affirmative-action bitch who was the HR person just airily said, "oh, I'm sorry, I was so busy, I could not get back to you, we hired someone else for that job weeks ago."  SO BUSY.  They had like five jobs open at the time.  This is what you get with government nowadays.  My husband applied for a job with the Justice Department in March, and he is still waiting for an interview.

I'm convinced that people have died waiting for government jobs to come through.  It is a total mystery how people get hired.

And what about those trade deals he hasn't yet sent them?  They haven't passed those either.

So I blame the Tea Party because they want to hang blacks from trees.

92 No one could fix ( I thought Barry had god-like powers) the mess that Bush made in only a couple of years and now the Tea Party is trying to destroy all of Barry's work to fix the economy.

Of course that's their tactic- what else do they have left?  The problem for them is that the American People (historically, who knows about our current crop) have never accepted "no one could..."  The typical response has been, "So you're giving up then?  Fine, we'll find someone else to give it a shot."

Sort of OT.   I was just over at PJM (checking out Ed Driscoll's take on the Shelby Steele column Rush was talking about yesterday), and I saw this headline by in the Tatler sidebar and it gave me a giggle:

Is Bob Beckel Senile?

Roger L. Simon continues:

Or is he just living in the past? Thursday night on “The Five” he kept referring to Majority Leader Eric Cantor as “Mickey.” I assume he was thinking of Mickey Kantor, Clinton’s 1992 campaign chief. Of course, there’s the third possibility that Beckel thinks we’re all alike, but I won’t go there.

I think everyone can agree that Beckel is well past his sell-by date and should be put out to pasture without delay.

Seeing as the economic news is so depressing today, I thought y'all would appreciate the easy laugh.

Rockmom, I have no idea how they hire. I had a friend apply for a government job, didn't hear anything for five months so, obviously, she figured she didn't get it. She was pissed they didn't have the courtesy to tell her no months ago. Suddenly, out of the blue, she gets a call saying she got the job. Five months later? After she started she asked if she was brought in because some other hire didn't work out. They told her no - that she was the only person they hired for the position. It's whacked!

Some personal perspective on this:

I am a programmer for a large bank with HQ in Europe. I am f'n miserable. From a working conditions perspective Milton in Office Space had a corner office compared to what I endure. And that's only about 30% of my dissatisfaction. 40% is my jerk of a team lead and the other 30 is management's overall dismissive attitude of employee concerns about anything.

Have been looking hard since July. Have had several interviews yet no offers. Trying to leap to anything non-banking.

I think many hesitate to offer because they know where I am with salary now. I'll admit I'm a bit inflated because they convinced me to come back in 2007 after downsizing me in 2006. They made it worth my while. Every place I've talked to is probably going to involve a 10-15K annual pay cut if I get an offer. And I'm so miserable I'm willing to do it (hard to not let that attitude come out in interviews). My wife who is a stay at home mom has even said she'll take a part time job if necessary to absorb the hit. She said the misery is really starting to wear on me.

Another trend seems to be a perference for contractors. I prefer to be FTE but I bet as a 6 month contractor I could have something right away.

First off, because he's too dumb to realize that, right in the middle of their season, they're a little busy to take the kind of time it take to see the President, even by invitation (yes, they work long days every day, too), and second, because he didn't realize that, in all likelihood, they'd be much more comfortable here at the HQ than hob-nobbing with the NRO crowd, for instance.

That is certainly part of it, but halfway-intelligent government policy could have helped smooth the effects of the unwinding and had us well on the road to a real recovery now.  Instead, Obama just had to punish the banks with Dodd-Frank and ram Obamacare through just to say he did, he just had to take over GM and Chrysler to save the UAW's ass, he just had to let Nancy Pelosi write a ridiculous and useless $800 billion stimulus bill that sent all that money down a proverbial rathole.  So now the government is out of money for any actual stimulus that might work, investors are terrified, and employers are not hiring because they would basically be idiots to hire in this environment.

Milton Friedman was right -- recessions are part of a normal buciness cycle.  Depressions are always caused by government policy.

148 Overall, the U.S. economy broke even, adding/losing zero jobs in August,

Are you really that stupid, or do you just pretend to be so you can troll here?  The United States adds somewhere between (last I checked) 80,000 & 100,000 new workers to its workforce every month.  Which means the rather anemic "growth" we've had in the last several months has actually been losing ground anyway.  By adding 0 net new jobs, we have, functionally, lost between 80,000 and 100,000.  Even if we factored out those government job losses (btw: those aren't in states that are taking control of their budgets, I'll point out.  Wisconsin, after Scott Walker's "Union Busting Tactics" was able to save tens of thousands of teachers' jobs that would otherwise have had to be cut) and let you claim the 17K jobs in the private sector, that is (minimum) 53,000 fewer jobs than we need just to break even.

Now, as for Republicans cutting budgets, etc.: You bet they are.  Government spending does not add one cent to the economy.  It -always and only- removes wealth.  If you'd get your head out of your messiah's rear long enough to look at the real world, you'd realize that every recovery after a recession has come about because of stability (that is: not adding several thousand new regulations like Mr. SCOAMF has done) and government finally ceasing to do anything to the economy.

Whenever intervention has been tried, it has -always and only- made the economy worse.

It's Friday, and I've had a week full of trolls already, so this is as nice as you're getting.

Bullshit.   The Dems are the kiss of death for real jobs creation.   Whenever they manage to wrestle the mantle of power from responsible people, things go to shit.

As soon as it is obvious to all that they are going to get the boot, real investment and job creation will begin anew.

The problem is policy.  You can't grow a country by stealing wealth from the creators and giving it to the shitless layabouts that comprise the Democrat base.

You can only spur growth by removing the obstacles that have been placed in the way by the Dem. Political Class.

Why are all these rich bosses so stubbornly refusing to hire? Why is it only THIS president who gets stuck with such a long recession? I suspect much of it has to do with him being black.

You want to know why Obama proposes things like the stimulus?  Because he has NO IDEA how to fix the problem and he just hopes that by throwing money at it it will magically improve.

Keynesian Economics - NEVER WORKED no matter how many times it is tried - yet the left believes in it.

Supply-side Economics - HAS WORKED every time it has been tried yet the left claims it doesn't work.

I talked with a client yesterday who runs investments for a private investor (read: really rich guy) and he said that they are "hunkering down" until after 2012.   Funny that:  I've heard the phrase "hunkering down" a lot lately, usually from businessmen-types or investors who have skin in the game.

Forget about polls and projections and all the political consultant mumbo jumbo.   The people who make the American economy work are already voting, and they have come to the conclusion that Obama has been a disaster for business, and will continue to be a disaster for business until we get rid of him in 2012.   The last thing on earth they want to hear is another "soaring" speech from President Just Words.   The next political speech they'll tune in for is the Inaugural Address of somebody else, anybody else.

Previous to his unprecedented administration, the rule of thumb for non-union labor measured Republican administration low taxes but high unemployment (yes, resulting from previous Democrat Spending/Mandate administrations) against contrasting Democrat administrations with jobs (resulting from previous Republican policy) but such high taxes as to deplete remaining wage earner income to poverty level w/o benefits (those reserved for the unemployed).

Obama killed the goose that laid golden eggs, now extinct, and is too incompetent to consider at least cloning it.

This is largely true.  As has been pointed out, nothing that either Hoover (who actually started the programs that would become "The New Deal") or Roosevelt did helped the American economy.  Even WWII did not directly fix the economy.  What finally fixed the American economy in the wake of WWII was innovation being unleashed by the Government getting out of the way (some, at least).

Reagan didn't improve the economy by anything he did, but rather by what he forbade the Government from doing.

We even have a good example in one Presidency: in the .com meltdown of 2000/2001, Bush cut taxes and got out of the way, and we came roaring back pretty quickly.  In the meltdown of 2008, he went all-in on "stimulus" and look at where that's gotten us.

What Obama lacks that Roosevelt didn't was a War (note the big W) to distract us from how miserable we are.  Also a true monopoly on media and communication.

He's done.  He may not realize it, yet, but the Congressional Democrats should.

Rockmom - to secure a Federal position is a career in itself. First, you have to know someone in the office you wish to apply to and know that they want you. Second, you must matriculate through the Federal hiring system. Third, the agency has to be allowed to hire new people (on-off). Generally the easiest way in is as support contractor. After a year or two supporting an agency function you know them (since you do their work) and they know you (feel comfortable with your personality) and finally you are tipped to an opening coming up and pre-prepare for the hiring process. Even with this foreknowledge, Government agencies must give first current Govies first dibs on the position before hiring new.

Bottom line - securing a Govie position is a long and tortuous process. Once in place, you can pretty much take your pack off because firing a govie is twice as hard as hiring one. Quick answer, interview with the agencies support contractors. They can hire you in a day if they like what they see.

Another tip.  Get an entry level job you're way over-qualified for in the gov.  Admin assistant or something.  Once you're in, it will be easier to move up to a job you're qualified for, since you can still use whatever private sector experience you have, but you'll also get the "current fed" status.

Posted by: yinzer at September 02, 2011 06:12 AM (/Mla1)

218 The biggest difference between the Reagan years and the Obama years is that in 1980 the rate of inflation was 13.5%. The recession was caused by the Fed in its attempts to get inflation under control, and though that recession caused very high unemployment rates, it did get inflation under control. In 1983, Reagan's third year in office, the rate of inflation had declined to 3.5%. People were willing to forgive the high unemployment rate because it had accomplished something--the reduction in inflation. Also, unemployment dropped from 9.4% in July of 1983 to 7.6% in September of 1984 with the very high GDP growth. What will the high unemployment rates of the Obama years (since he took office, we have had more months with unemployment above 9% than all other administrations since Truman combined) accomplish?

The Obama partisans who are trying to find solace in the Reagan story are only looking at a tiny bit of the picture. The whole comparison should be very discouraging for them.

219 Now that I read that the "zero" was a result of cutting government jobs, I don't feel quite as gloomy.

I'd prefer to see 2 private sector jobs added per public sector cut, but cutting some government is at least a step in the right direction.

I do note that most of that comes from the "small government" side of things (city/county/state).  We need to whack DC government jobs.

Who's still ignoring the fact that Americans (and Europeans) were ALL on rations during WWII? Sure, women got jobs men were shipped off leaving behind.

But for everyone working together FOR A SHORT "DURATION" TERM of only four years I'd argue that was easier for everyone than our current circumstances being bankrupt, not merely in Depression, AND being thrown by our potus/NATO/UN directive (ignoring the US Constitution and roles/limits of US government branches, not to mention US sovereignty) into never-ending ever-escalating perpetually re-deployed Military Personnel AND National Guard wars permeating the globe.

Imo, Obama has been and IS using his wars to distract us from how miserable we are -- but he's such a clusterfuck-of-a-failure he mismanaged that -- as if most Americans today are as "trusting" of official messaging as in the first half of the 20th Century. Disillusionment has a way of changing perception-- having eaten the fruit from the tree of knowledge. Matters whether good or evil feed the propaganda machine. That people see through the Oz curtains now does not mean that Obama hasn't still as true a monopoly on the MFM and Federal CyberSecurity internet surveillance, propaganda and interruptions as FDR, Stalin or Hitler could only dream of abusing.

Posted by Katharine Abraham on September 02, 2011 at 09:39 AM EDT

TodayÂ’s employment report shows that private sector payrolls increased by 17,000 and overall payroll employment was flat in August. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.1 percent, a level that remains unacceptably high. Despite a slowdown in economic growth from substantial headwinds experienced throughout the year, the economy has added private sector jobs for 18 straight months, for a total of 2.4 million jobs over that period.

225 What finally fixed the American economy in the wake of WWII was innovation being unleashed by the Government getting out of the way (some, at least)

Rather, Federal Contracts and Congressional Mandates streamlined all efforts towards winning a global front war based from two continents across the major oceans from America. (--morons need not assume incorrectly that given Japan/Germany declaring war on America, we should have stayed neutral--no one declared war on Switzerland.)

You're arguing that those were "getting out of the way of business"?

Tell that to the American manufacturing industries and machine shops fabricating domestic consumer items /vacuum cleaners, toasters.

That Americans united under attack was by choice.

The bagel on the scoreboard records the jobs created figure. The 14 Trillion on the other scoreboard is - well guess what that is.

That is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure in terms sports fans can understand.

Blue Falcon,

I can't see America embracing the Draft to fight all of Obama's wars.

I also don't see the humanity of perpetually redeploying our troops, particularly to fight UN/NATO/Obama destabilizing wars enabling the abusive powers of global authoritarianism.

The storm was due to Bush's policies creating accelerated global climate change and my income is lost because of Bush's horrible economic policies. But, I will survive to help president Obama get a second and third term. We must have faith in President Obama and hope his plans work soon. the sooner we arrest Bush the sooner we heel as a nation people. Let's get with it !!!!!

For those 'rons & 'ettes saying that the unemployment rate should have gone up, it actually did.  The U-6 went from a seasonally adjusted 16.1% last month to 16.2%. I haven't wasted my time looking at the U-3 category for over a year.

236 What I recognize is the necessity to defend America's borders, protect our interior and our national sovereignty -- to maintain US Constitutional Governance.

The business of fighting an ever growing number of wars in Islam, now aimed to ally the empowerment of Muslim Theocracy, is insane.

If that's as good as Obama's propaganda can mount after Bush's compassionate PC warfare failure to "win the hearts and minds of our enemies", then two words:

Impeach Obama.

Spend our tax funds rebuilding America's manufacturing industry, at the heart of national sovereignty and economic security, rather than directing the rest of the world's improvements.

MBA corporate raiders don't produce goods or "good jobs". Investments in frauds (Federal Reserve) don't produce a nation's wealth.

/on that note, who else saw the ironic headline: Freddy/Fanny M&M are suing Bank of America, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs for financing fraud at taxpayer expense. Talk about pot/kettle distracting finger pointing that won't produce anything but more wasted tax dollars.

Posted by: Scott J at September 02, 2011 09:51 AM (/bVuS)

I just had a very promising phone interview yesterday with a smaller consulting firm that works with most of the big and medium-sized lenders doing process improvements and the like.  They are getting a ton of business because the big firms like Accenture keep selling the banks with high-quality talent and then once they get the contract they assign a bunch of dumb recent college graduates to the project and they produce nothing useful.  This firm also has a good track record of getting its consultants placed in key jobs within the banks.  I am really hoping this one works out.

I am also waiting to hear on another good job with a bank that is based in Canada.  All the U.S. banks are screwed, there are going to be mass layoffs this fall at all of them.

I don't know if I am counted or not.  I have been looking for work for over a year since my last consulting gig was canceled, but my unemployment benefits ran out in 2009.

In my upscale neighborhood of 22 homes, there are five of us who are long-term unemployed.  That's a bit more than 20%, and I think this is fairly typical.  And this doesn't count the teens in these households who want to work but can't find a part-time job.

242 Two points, one relevant, one not.

1. Can we finally call this the Obama Depression?

2. I'm in the Detroit area, and the media is a-twitter with talk of an upcoming UAW strike against Ford- in fact, the UAW admits to targeting Ford. As all good morons know, Ford is the only one who did not take the bailout, and therefore, is not owned indirectly by the UAW. This feels really illegal to me. Just saying.

246 The only people to lose their jobs in Wisconsin were employees....of the union.  Not.  One.  Teacher.

Not 100% true... Jobs were lost for some teachers in Wisconsin, but ONLY in areas such as Milwaukee which signed new union contracts before Walker's law took effect.

OTOH, areas which were given the freedom to negotiate on things like the health care provider for teachers cut overhead by so much that they were able to hire new teachers.

If it weren't for the almost certainty of the NLRB interfering on the UAW's behalf I'd said now is the time for Ford to relocate all its domestic manufacturing to Right to Work states.

I said that was their job - that is what they are supposed to do - I didn't say anything about how good a job they were doing.

254 Strike at Ford plants. I've got a great election strategy for Future President Perry. Hold a joint telecom with Barry and ford Executives. Declare that EPA and the CAFE standards dictated by the Federal Government are beyond the scope of limited government declared in the Constitution. Declare that those standards are not enforceable in Texas, and invite Ford to relocate whatever manufacturing they want to Texas. Guarantee that they can make cars with whatever bumpers they want. With or without airbags. Getting whatever gas mileage they want. OSHA regulations out the window also. This will immediately give Ford about a 5K per vehicle advantage over every other pickup truck in the world. Tell the Federal government that they might as well dismantle the regulating organizations unless that organization was authorized under the Constitution or it's many amendments. Now, you might have to declare that these vehicles will not be sold outside of Texas to avoid the inevitable 14th amendment argument, but that's do-able also. Then let every other state follow suit, and we might get back a semblance of limited government and strong state governments. And as long as I'm dreaming, lets have Texas refuse every dollar of federal money, and by the way REJECT every federal mandate ever issued related to that money until there is a full State sponsored determination of whether that mandate was in excess of the limitations put on the federal government by the constitution.

Didn't read the posts... but...

They say there were Zero jobs created last month, but that is AFTER they lower the baseline, by saying less jobs were created the months prior.

So, based on the numbers from before the 'adjustment' there would have been JOBS DESTROYED...

So... how do you ensure that headline does not run? You 'renorm' the data...

East Anglia Mathmaticians would be proud.
