— LauraW DETAILS DEVELOPING....
Rick Perry and his top-notch economic advisors are releasing the framework of a startling and paradigm-shattering new plan...
We here at AOSHQ along with some large media outlets and other, lesser, blogs are in the process of receiving the bare bones of this plan, with fill-in details to come later.
All we can tell you right now is that they call it:
"8-8-8."
All credit for this joke goes to scottw.

It worse than that, his 9% tax on businesses only allow investments, purchases (from american companies only) and dividend payments to be deducted from the companies gross income.
No labor, insurance, attorneys fees, rent, or anything else except what I mentioned can be deducted. Even if you lose money you would have to pay taxes. It's a business and job killer.

Why would we add another tax? That's the democrats job. Why don't we make it a 9-9-9-9 plan and make the last 9 represent the dissolution of 9 divisions across our armed forces? If we're going to do the democrats job for them, why not go all out?

With regards to Newt and why he has risen above Romney and Cain in my estimation, my feeling is that he's a skilled politician who really knows DC. I credit him with staying on focus attacking Obama and delivering a conservative message. Aside from what I see as weaker resumes, I simply can't forgive Romney for demonizing the Social Security reform stuff or Cain's race-baiting crap.
He's obviously done and said some dumb ass stuff, including in the personal arena, but he knows what conservatism is and I think he'd tackle the big stuff with more skill than Cain or Romney because he knows the Beltway. We'd get some of the usual suspects, but I prefer that over the invisible advisers Cain is using (what's up with that?) or the circle Romney seemed to travel in in Massachusetts (there seem to be reports every week about some lib who was a Mitt adviser).
Now, whether or not a guy like Newt can win is a separate matter. I think he is qualified enough to win and politically well-connected enough to win, but I don't know if voters will go for him. I vastly prefer Perry.

The 9% sales tax eliminates the SSI and Medicare tax (which is the payroll tax). The 9% federal flat tax replaces the federal income tax we pay now.
So let me get this right.
it gets rid of the SS and Medicare tax 12.4% and 2.9% (if you include both employer and employee).
We get rid of the income tax and replace it with a flat 9%.
Right? Then we add a 9% national sales tax.
Right?
Two problems with this.
With what do we fund medicare and SS with? I haven't heard him say word one about reforming or eliminating either program. And while I am not eliminating them or reforming them at least, I acknowledge that while they do exist, they need to be paid for. So we'll completely cut contributions and ________? How do you fund it if you're not eliminating it? I get the idea that revenue will probably increase over the long haul due to the tax decrease, but that takes time. What do we do in the short term 5-10 years? More importantly, where does the money to pay for these programs come? The General fund?
Second problem, what happens if maybe, just maybe, the Republicans don't control the House, Senate and Presidecny for the rest of our lives.
What's to stop them from keeping the sales tax and then reverting us back to the old income tax with FICA taxes included?
Put it in the constitution? Two more questions. Could we get a 2/3 majority to put it in the constitution? Secondly, do the democrats ever abide by the constitution anyway?
It sounds snappy and easy, but it's fraught with real problems
Posted by: Ben at October 13, 2011 06:18 PM (tEGzl)
I like Newt, he is someone we really need for at least 4 years. But you, willow, and everybody else who knows this shit also know that the sheep will listen to the negatives the fucking media bring up ad-nauseum. There will not be one major media outlet that will give Newt the benefit of the doubt. None! His best bet is a cabinet position. That's why I wondered why he jumped in the race to begin with. He doesn't have to convince me he's qualified, he has to convince the dumbasses. That is a tough sell when he has no media support.

77 Fuck no. Cain is really losing me here and I was really starting to like him. And Perry's wife didn't do him any favors tonight with her stupid remarks. We really are boned...
She obviously cares about her husband a great deal, and I certainly get that a Presidential campaign is a difficult thing to go through.
But please spare me the stuff about brutality. If she thinks this is bad, wait till the SCOAMF hit squad goes into action in a general election campaign.
I also saw a comment from her saying that when she heard 9-9-9 she thought of calling 9-1-1.
OK, if you are going to interject yourself into your husband's campaign beyond moral support and encouragement, and go into criticizing the other candidates proposals, you leave yourself open to criticism.
Anita, where is your husband's plan? Cain's plan may be rubbish, but he's got something out there. And by the way, what was that stuff about 'Rick not really wanting to run' all about, going on to say that you basically had to implore him to do so.
A lot of people question whether he ever really wanted any part of this, and I think her comments indicate that just maybe he didn't.

Personally, I believe any one of the candidates running can easily beat Barky. So, the test for Perry is not whether he could win. The test is whether he could govern effectively. I think that question was answered today when his little wifey felt the need or was told to come out publicly to defend his namby-pamby ass. The boy is from Texas for Christ's sake. Texans never ask their wives to fight for them. Just ain't right.

It's not loyalty.
I just don't see that on the day that Perry made a major policy speech and spoke intelligently about Iran on CNBC, some stupid ass comment that his wife made venting about why her husband had a rough month matters. I never care about the spouses unless they become shadow government officials or do something so egregious that you can't ignore it.
Let's see how his jobs and energy plan looks tomorrow and his tax plan (when he releases that later).
I think people are getting way too emotional -- parsing out every single sentence and interpreting every single gesture or look. But I base my vote on accomplishments and experience more than on rhetoric.

I don't mind that they don't pay taxes. I mind that nontaxpayers vote.
But democracy, like entropy, increases over time . . .
This is why I am endorsing Obama as the true Conservative choice in 2012. [Or, at the very least, I'm endorsing a Right-wing boycott.] I don't expect this Constitutional system to survive. The sooner it crashes, the sooner we have a new, oligarchic (or monarchic) Constitution. We the producers will be better off for it.
Posted by: Boulder Monophthalmos at October 13, 2011 06:25 PM (6GvAC)
Easy, the "10% Plan." A ten percent cut in all federal spending--today. It has as realistic a chance of passing as Cain's but exposes the fact that Cain has bought into the lie that all we need is more efficient tax collecting. Pro-tip, Cain: Revenue is not the problem and all your plan does is provide revenue without doing one damn thing to stop borrowing or spending.
Remember, Cain is the guy who couldn't name any federal agency that needed cut or reduced. Cain is the "one-gimmick" campaign; a poster-board slogan of a campaign that can't be defended under any serious analysis.

Indeed, while I'm for it in theory, it's not going to be great when Barack Obama is able to run as the guy who is keeping taxes down for the poor and lower middle class.

Look, when Scary Perry entered the race we knew he would be painted as a Bible-thumping wacko. And that certainly has been part of the portrayal. I don't support Perry out of loyalty either. He's simply the best of the lot.
He's the most electable conservative of the lot.
His biggest weakness is debates, but so what? He'll do better in one on one debates with SCOAMF. All he needs to do is hold his own.
People are puting a little too much emphasis on the value of debates. Obama didn't destroy McCain in the debates, George Bush didn't thrash Kerry in 2004, Gore in 2000 and McCain in the 1999 primaries, did he?
The economy is going to be terrible in 2012. Same as it is now. Perry will simply need to not screw up and I think he can do that in a one on one format. Also, all of the things that are considered weak positions in the primaries aren't negatives in the generals. Is Obama going to attack his immigration policy? His Gardisil policy? What is Obama going to attack Perry on exactly? Perry's record of job creation?
Perry is a good candidate. He excels at raising money, giving stump speeches and the the retail in person hand shaking crowd pleasing politics.
He can beat Obama and he's more conservative than Romney on EVERY issue.

Is Newt a better leader than he was when he was essentially forced to resign in 1998? I realize that a large part of that push was due to questions about behavior and electoral losses, but there are still genuine conservatives on the Hill who dislike him because he had a hard time listening to other people. It was ultimately all about Newt. So has that changed?

Well, yeah, but we didn't know he would crap out so badly during the debates. He was billed as a GREAT debater... NOW they tell us that debates aren't really his strong point. And it's just not the debates... the way he's running his campaign is messed up. Why is he waiting to start an effective ad campaign to counter the inevitable Media caricature of him, and to try to ameliorate the debate damage?
His campaign and performance has been half-baked. His debate performances sucked because he hasn't spent at least two years studying the issues. I think he just wasn't ready to run for President, because he did it on a spur of the moment - and it shows. Chris Christie new you can't just do a presidential campaign on the fly, without running into the pratfalls Perry has. That's why he didn't run, and he was right not to.

Here's the big deal - Men still elect presidents in this country. Like it or not, if you don't get the majority of males to vote for you, you will lose the election. So, when men see Perry's wife out there trying to defend him, it makes him look weak. And, he's done nothing in the debates to indicate he would be a strong leader. So, in my opinion, this little speech Mrs. Perry put on today will be very damaging to him. Sorry to say it - I had high hopes for Perry, but not anymore. I think he's done.

Newt, Mitt, Used Car salesman.
Fast talkers, know how to play to an audience, tell you what you want to hear, and in the end empty your pocket and fuck you over.
Newt is tearing it up at the debates. Why? Because he's attacking the media? Well gee whiz I wonder if he's playing to some sort of audience that is natually predisposed to hate the media?
I've enjoyed Newt at the debates, but he's intentionally giving us red meat. You can't forget what policies he has supported, his many failures and overreaches as Speaker of the House, his global warming stance, his back stabbing of Paul Ryan, etc.
Being entertained at debates as one thing, casting a vote for him is something completely different.

Well we've got to defend ourselves from the encroaching alien secular urban culture somehow.
Also, I'm pretty sure the original 'get right with Jesus' comment wasn't meant in a religious sense, unless Newt's had an awakening I missed. It seemed more of a sort with the "come to Jesus moment" which is generally used interchangeably with the notion of "getting the clue" in the most severest sense, such as a stupidity-induced brush with death (and make no mistake about it, this country is at death's door, it's just that the nature of economics is that it chugs along by inertia until all of the sudden, the bottom drops out of everything).

As a marketeer, my first impulse was to bristle at the 9-9-9 plan because, while I am in marketing, I also work side by side with finance and yield folks. One of the first red flags for us is when we see clean, round numbers or numbers which are too clever by half. It usually indicates that someone at the top of the food chain had a clever idea that everyone else will have to back into somehow. The results are never good.
My very first impulse was to question the REAL numbers behind 9-9-9 because it IS a marketing gimmick, although a very transparent gimmick at that.

I do wish his campaign would post his upcoming appearances. They did at first but they don't seem to any longer. One of the memes his opponents are spinning is that he's Fred 2.0 and not campaigning hard. I know that's not true, but it's hard to refute without being able to point to his travel schedule. Mitt has been following Palin, Ryan etal for months. He's the clean up guy. Where they dropped the bombs, he's come in behind as the guy to profit from it. At no point, when Obama was popular, was he out there leading any charge against him. Fuck Romney.
Romney, so opposed to Obamacare was he that he said nothing the entire time it was debated. About how it wasn't appropriate at the federal level. Nothing. Fuck him.
In fact, Romney still isn't leading on anything against Obama. Just meaningless platitudes about how he'll do better or whatever. Fuck him.

Thanks for posting that. Nice pix!
Geez I wish he'd come to Utah.

I'm not merely speaking of his infidelities. Again, Newt is the ideal politician but that's the reason why he had such a difficult time as Speaker of the House. He could over-think things and his ego eventually got in the way of progress. Other lawmakers (including some current conservative veteran congressmen) started hating him because he thought he was the smartest man in the room, which led him to ignore other opinions, even on little things. You can't do that when you're President of the United States and I want to know whether Newt learned his lesson.
Posted by: Miss'80s at October 13, 2011 07:14 PM (d6QMz)
I didn't mean to say Ryan was wrong or anything, just that the damage was done.
It was the headline that did it. Ultimately, though, it may not matter as much because he's still not allowed to endorse anyone with this fundraising role of his. So he can continue to positively comment Perry and Cain or whoever else without making it official.

I dunno about this either. I think Newt thinks he is smartest person in the room. Hell, it's DC. He probably is the smartest person up there. That's not a huge task though. Look at the mental midgets you are comparing him to.
Newt has been blowing up the debates. He's been awesome in every single one of them. He's on point; he's detailed. He doesn't attack everyone else - he goes after his target (Obama). He doesn't dodge questions. After debates, he's awesome on TV with interviews.
I love Cain but I think 9-9-9 is going to blow up in our face. Sooner or later. People are going to realize its a tax increase on 48% of Americans, while rich people get a tax cut. You cannot give democrats that sort of easy talking point - especially when it's your centerpiece.
Right now, I'm Cain or Newt. Romney is a chicken fucker. I'll vote for him in the general, if it comes to that. I pray it won't.

My primary concern is that he'd return to micromanaging. I recognize that presidents always make the final decision but they have advisers for a reason. That's my primary question, is whether he'd now be able to avoid the desire to micromanage things. What I'm seeing thus far indicates he (still) can't.

I guess Rubio goes in the bin with Christie as could've-beens-that-didn't-pan-out.

He'd be a damned good debater, and especially hard for Obama to prep for. After all: nobody knows WHAT the hell will come out of Newt's mouth.
You know, I'm starting to think he'd be a good VP.

So Rubios chief of staff and former Romney campaigner pushed to have the Floridah primary pushed up?
I've warned people that he is still something of an unknown. I see signs he could go either way.
Rand Paul however? Still awesome.

It sounds snappy and easy, but it's fraught with real problems
Posted by: Ben at October 13, 2011 10:18 PM (tEGzl)
Yes, it comes out of the General fund and as such increases the opportunity for waste, pork, and corruption a hundred fold. Also, the 9-9-9 boondangle is just phase 2. The third phase is a 30% tax on all goods.(not sure if it includes services). Not something to look forward to with a smile. Cain is dangerous,..even more so than Mitt.

I've been thinking that for a while.
Perry/Gingrich or Cain/Gingrich would be awesome against Obama/Biden.
A leader against a poser and a genius against a moron.

No, no, that was h8, h8, h8, like, you know, racist hate, or something like that. Um... maybe not....

What's stopping 8-8-8 from being turned into 9-9-9 by a future congress?
#14 Posted by: Cain's Ideas-Bankrupt Opponents and their Flunkies
If you turn it on its side it's oo, oo, oo.
#18 Posted by: Michelle Bachmann
But if you turn an 8 upside down it is still an 8!!! A 9 turns into a 6.
See, it is better already!!!

That's as far as any "endorsement" should go, since the devil's always in the pox details that blanket endorsements are meant to hide.
Come back tomorrow and count yourself lucky to be granted an audience. The Great Oz has spoken! Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!
