BREAKING: Herman Cain Wins Florida Straw Poll
— DrewM

Wow is the general reaction I'm seeing.

Cain 37%

Perry 15%

Romney 14%

Santorum 11%

Paul 10%

Gingrich 8%

Huntsman 2%

Bachmann 1%

Supposedly Romney wasn't officially participation and then there were rumors his team was voting Cain to deny Perry the win. Either way, Perry only coming in 1% ahead of Romney? a CPAC event?

Ouch.

Via Josh Trevino...Perry was trying hard to win this.

Bachmann got beat by John Huntsman? Shows you how important Ames is.

Jon Huntsman - 60
Michele Bachmann - 40

12 So if Romney was sabotaging Perry and Cain was being Cain and thus garnered what Cain wouldn't have garnered save for Romney's skullduggery, then it would seem we have homeostasis, politically speaking of course.

Posted by: journolist at September 24, 2011 01:59 PM (Fb9Q0)

13 Hoping that like Huckabee placed second in the Iowa straw poll and won the caucus, Perry gets his game on and wins Florida.

35 Seriously, I like and respect Herman Cain. He's a decent guy, a successful American businessman and, like Clarence Thomas, goes against the leftist meme of what a black American ought to think and do. He's not polished, nor is he up on foreign policy issues. But both of these can be overcome with the right people. And as all successful CEO's know, it's the people you surround yourself with that make all the difference in the world, and I think Cain would surround himself with the absolute best and brightest conservative minds around. The question of the election game is another matter. All I'm saying is that Cain is a great American. Isn't that what we really need? And is that enough?

65 Herman Cain is great, and I would be proud to vote for him and work to get him elected, but the really great part is the shift in the matrix it would cause to have a real black man run against a half black man.  And then, of course, to have the real black man actually fix things!  And no, Perry is not done.  IMO, it is just a 3 man race, rather than a 2 man race.  Let the best man win.

69 Perry needs to walk back that "no heart" race card bullshit.

There's nothing I hate more than being called a racist by left-wing Obama-scum -- just cause I disagree with their leftist crap.

To have Perry repeat those race card lies is really fucking aggravating.

It was a betrayal. I know I like Perry's policy stances more than Romney. Don't call me a racist, then ask for my vote.

And yeah, I know he didn't explicitly play the race card. But he used the exact same language the Left uses when they play it.

80 At some point the GOP is going to have to admit the whole thing was started to damn early. Had T-Paw not got out he could have started appearing relatively sane. Even though he still had no real shot, my opinion. This will prolly end up being the fable of the tortoise and the Hare. Cain, Gingrich, those that have not acted crazy and just maintained could win this race. We are going to be so burn out on Romney and Perry and the petty shit they are both guilty of espousing about each other. The whole thing has become tiring.   Thinking that what you saw of Perry in those debates wasn't the bona fide man, but someone who was following a script that he had no chance of understanding. And I believe that was done as a pander to the "moderates" and indies, so as not to give the impression (as is seen by the establishment) that Perry is a firebreathing extremist. 105 This is a shocker for sure. I was thinking that all the applause he received during the debate was nice and hoped it was sincere and not just a patronage. Like for an entertainer. Don't forget Hermam Cain had or still has a radio talk show. People know where he stands. He is a very tough conservative. I like the fact that he is definitely an out sider. If elected if not be by big establishment money. He would be our candidate not Bilderbergs!!!!

Huntsman could earmark his 2% or prorate it.

Kratos, which route would be more viable in a purely scientific model?

I don't think you mean "earmark", but I'm drawing a blank as to what you actually mean.

But let's make the proposition moot and have one of the front-runners from this poll pledge to make Huntsman Ambassador to China in their Administrations.  It might make Huntsman happy and besides, he can't do that much harm as an Ambassador.

I'm surprised Santorum did as well as he did.  Perhaps he picked up a prodigious amount of sane former Bachmann supporters?

111 To those who think this is as meaningless as the Iowa straw poll, you're wrong. This is much bigger because 1) it's a slap at Perry, big-time, 2) it's a sifter straw poll. The voters sifted out Bachman, Santorum, Huntsman, et al.

The race is now down to three people.

Hell, the Trib even has a staff member who writes love stories about convicted murderers, claiming they are sooooo  good that they need to be spared the needle for their crimes.

The straw poll in Orlando was non-binding and voting was limited to about 3,500 delegates who had paid $175 each to attend Presidency 5, hosted by the Florida GOP.

Does anyone really blow that much of their own money to vote in something like this?

Cain must have dropped damned near a quarter of a million dollars, incidentals included. to get that vote.

While its a losing proposition to explain a joke, here it is.  The leftard rap on conservatives is that we hate blacks.  If we nominated Cain, that would kind of deflate that crap.  So a bumper sticker that makes an exception for Cain while preserving our traditional black-hatred is, you know, kind of funny.

We've had a few chances to see him on the defensive -- post-muslim comments, for one -- and he continues not to flap. His line about "America needs to learn how to take a joke" is the best line he's delivered, I think. It's kind of the antidote to Eric Holder's "We're all afraid to talk about race." Normally, I wouldn't be for a guy with no previous political experience, but these are not normal times. 2012 is the time to make a statement.

It's looking more and more as though Perry is a dud.

He came into the race an odds on favorite, and since then has has fallen flat on his face in three straight debates.

The nomination was pitched to him under hand, and he whiffed.

If Chris Christie enters the race, he will become the next president of the United States. If he doesn't, we may as well run Romney (shiver), who looks as good as Perry on TV in a suit and can at least speak in complete sentences.

Cain knows that he doesn't know everything, and is willing to admit it and learn. That lack of arrogance is a big plus. He knows he's going to make mistakes, but he also has admitted and shown he's willing to learn from them. And he has enough business experience in govt and private to know what direction this country needs to go in.

He's not in it for power,  that's a big plus. I like Perry for the same reason, but with Perry's thursday showing, its undecided how he would fare.

310 306 Cain's most impressive trait, to me, is his demeanor. The guy is unflappable. (I speak as a very flappable guy.) We've had a few chances to see him on the defensive -- post-muslim comments, for one -- and he continues not to flap. His line about "America needs to learn how to take a joke" is the best line he's delivered, I think. It's kind of the antidote to Eric Holder's "We're all afraid to talk about race."

Normally, I wouldn't be for a guy with no previous political experience, but these are not normal times. 2012 is the time to make a statement.

Cain, now, double wow!

It's not just that Cain won, its how solidly he won it.  That shows some real organizational and campaign skills and politicking mojo that I hadn't expected from him.

I don't know if he's ready for primetime yet, but he's making real strides.  I will be taking a second look.  He just doesn't have the baggage that wafflin' Romney and open borders Perry the crony capitalist have.  He has real executive experience,, he has leadership, and the guy's conservativism is obviously heartfelt and deeply thought.  He is who he is.  He lacks political experience, which is a negative, but if he continues to improve that factor wouldn't  be dispositive.

Also, electorally, Cain would force the Dems to renominate Obama and would discombobulate the media, offer for the first time the possibility of shaking up the monolithic connection between the Dems and the black community; make independents feel comfortable voting against Obama . . .  Electorally his inexperience means he'd probably make some gaffes, but Obama trying to make political capital over his political inexperience would be a laugh.

Dunno.  I'm not all in, but my vote in now Cain's to win.  If he continues to surge and continues to polish himself politically, I'll be a AOSHQ Cracker for Cain (official motto: Fear the Brown Person!"

This isn't the Ames poll where candidates literally bus in supporters from from around the state and wine them and dine them. This as a meeting of conservative activists, independent from any one candidate. Perry very publicly said he was "putting all his hopes into Florida" and spend a lot of time courting delegates and spent a lot of money. Both Romney and Bachmann declined to even participate in the poll. Their names were on the ballot as announced candidates but they did none of the fluff and buff. This was in a sense Perry's base and not Romney's. For Perry to lose this badly is going to put another huge dent in his campaign and equally important his fundraising. Great day for Cain. The Florida strawpoll is a bit more sophisticated than Iowa. These people are activists, the ones that work to influence people and get out the vote.

------
Don't forget that when the spotlight was somewhat on Cain (before Perry entered) he shot himself in the foot a couple of times.

I think Perry can recapture supporters from Cain much more easily than if he had lost them to Huntsman or Romney.  Because he naturally wants to tack right.  His problem has been trying to defend from the far right (Bachmann) on fringe issues.

If the voters want an economics guy and a manager/executive and they are not choosing Romney (could they be responding to his McCain-like attacks?), Perry should be able to make the case that he is a better choice than Cain, whose experience is pretty limited (which showed in early debates).  He just has to get back to basics and start attacking Mitt.

Of course, that's if any of this means anything.  It sounds like many of these straw poll thingies are prone to unusual results based perhaps more on intensity of activists types.  So I don't know if this one reflects what Floridians think.

However...this is September.  The big boy debates start in a couple months and someone will be the "anti Mitt, Tea Party guy".  It probably will still be Perry barring a Christie run.  Lets see how Mittens handles front runner status and constant attacks from the newly liberated, more conservative underdog.

377 If this straw poll is really activists and not kids candidates bus in or whatever, then I still think it's bad for Romney because it really does seem like they are trying to send a message to Perry to tack right.  Otherwise, they would have crushed him by throwing in with Romney (if they all supposedly know Cain is not viable).

I mean, if they are so pissed at Perry they want him gone, they could have (should have) thrown it to Romney, Perry's strongest opponent.

Because it seems to me that donors are not going to suddenly go all-in for Cain and Perry backers (national donor types) are not going to suddenly switch to Cain based on this result, whereas they might have given up on Perry if Romney crushed him in this straw poll.

Lets see how Mittens handles front runner status and constant attacks from the newly liberated, more conservative underdog. Don't count on Cain hammering Romney too hard. He did endorse Romney last campaign. Matt Kibbe, the sideburned leader of Freedom Works which is probably the largest and most organized Tea Party groups, has been out the last couple days basically laying down the Buckley rule and saying that its not too late for Romney to win their support. There's a reason that second time candidates do well the next time. Running for the Presidency is one large minefield and all it takes is a couple "if you don't support illegal children getting in-state tuition" to put a major ding in a campaign. Candidates that jump in with tons of fanfare often can't sustain the pre-game buzz. But I agree and have been saying for a long time, its very early with a long way to go.

But I don't think Cain has momentum.  Gingrich seems to have had the momentum based on the past couple of debates.

What this does say is that Romney is not necessarily the safe, electable candidate some have been painting him to be.  It really seems to suggest that a sizable chunk of informed voters (if I understand what the composition of this straw poll was) do not want Romney.

Seems to me if that was the message the Florida straw pollers were trying to send, they should have voted for Romney.  They didn't.  Nor did they throw it to Bachmann.  They are sending a message about issues that are important (fiscal) and imho indicating that they are not sold on Romney's plan.

I don't think this result is a victory for Perry, but it's not a defeat for him either (and it could have been).  And I really don't see how this should warm the cockles of Romney's heart.  Saying he didn't try in Florida when the dude has been campaigning for three years is a little silly.  He's a known quantity.

477 eh.  I was all over hammerin on Perry early on for a couple of his policies and the perry cult that was forming.  But I will defend him now.  There is a long way to go and he can correct these things.  Romney continues to make the mistake of defending socialist healthcare, Perry shouldn't make the mistake of defending things that just don't fit in the conservative field.  Instead of defending against a wall for instance, he can just say all of the above.  He has a lot of time.  Straw polls are just straw polls.

However, if the Romney team really did switch votes to deny Perry, then that tells me Romney is a duplicitous bastard and we already have one of those in the WH.  Good riddance.

I bet you will see over the next couple of days that this was indeed a big defeat for Perry. The fact that Romney is a known quantity is very true and that's why he's picking and choosing his battles. This was a meeting of conservative activists and the Romney campaign also knows its targets. This was not one of them. CPAC Florida is not a representative group of Floridians. It is a representative group of Florida conservative activists. He was never going to be the darling of conservative activists and so he played this down. Perry on the other hand, wanted this badly. He was seeking to become the conservative hero and stretch his lead over Romney. He sunk considerable time, money and political capital into the race and beat Romney by 1 point. I know it doesn't make you happy but this was a very bad result for Perry.

488 It's a bad day for Perry, no doubt.  It's a good day for Romney, but let's not overhype it.  Romney probably is locked in right around 35-40% of the primary vote that he can grab.  Maybe 50% plus in some more moderate states, but maybe as low as the 20's in many of the red states.  He can weaken anyone that emerges, but that just means someone else is going to pop up, because there are going to be up to 60% or more that are going to line up with someone else no matter what IMO.

Obviously, right now, it looks like he's going to get that desired split amongst the other candidates, but that has to be maintained for several more months.  He's done a very good job putting Perry on the defensive, but he isn't going to want to have to take the same tact on someone else or it will really start to weaken his numbers.

It's hilarious to hear supposed "conservatives" pumping up a bullshitting, mediocre, half-wit politician like Rick Perry, while talking down a guy like Herman Cain.

Cain has actually been successful in the private sector and the public sector.  He's articulate, genuine, and decent.

He needs to get a better grasp of foreign policy issues, but, you know what, that's what these guys have advisors for.  Refreshingly, Cain knows what he doesn't know.  That's a hell of a lot better than having a suit like Mitt who thinks he can solve all of the world's problems by somehow designing a better corporate model.

Well, I agree with you.  That's my argument too.

I think this result shows that Romney is not the default safe vote that we have been led to believe.  It also shows that the conservatives have not given up on Perry -- they threw their vote to a *extremely unlikely to be viable* candidate rather than to Romney or Bachmann or Huntsman or even Ron Paul.

M80sB summarized it well.

Just as with MB, Cain is not in it to win but is instead a functional Romneyite stalking horse.

Palinistas have discussed the obvious collusion of these two with the Romney camp since they entered the race, originally with the purpose of dilluting Palin's strength and persuading her to stay out, since Mitt knows full well what's going to happen if she gets in.

Many at this 4Perry site scoffed at this explication, but now you've seen it put to work on your guy.

What do you say now?

Perry's entry into the race served, for Palin, as a response to Mitt's stalking horse strategy:  Perry became, for her, the blocker care that ran Bachmann into the ditch and slowed Mitt from running away, all the while unable to pull clear of the field himself.

Now Rick is going to have to spend even more time tearing up Cain.

End result:  Mitt's stalking horses to the glue factory, Mitt and Perry both terribly weakened and ripe for the picking, especially if Christie dillutes their base vote even more.

And Palin has yet to spend a nickel and is proving harder to kill than Keith Richard.

Um, no.  Conservatives don't think the DoD needs to be well run?  News to me.

We have more than a dozen cabinet departments, dozens of agencies, millions of federal employees, a budget in the trillions.  And in our wildest dreams, in the kind of presidency where choiring angels sing and alien space bats from heaven ride in on laser beams to pass impossible bills through Congress, we maybe reduce all that by 10%.

But executive ability doesn't matter.

Bush torpedoed the Republican Party when it turned out he didn't know how to run a war effort, how to evaluate management talent, how to get FEMA working, or how to work an effective communications and PR strategy.

But executive ability doesn't matter.

If the President were the Chief Executive, that would be different.  But he isn't.

Executive ability doesn't matter.

Romney should have won more votes from disenchanted Perry voters, if electability is what they were looking for in this race. Instead, those voters went with Cain, which signals that they want a candidate who is authentic, sure of himself, and well-spoken.

Well said.  It's why I said earlier that no matter what, Mitt faces a big challenge in a few months when the shit gets real. (Probably Perry but who knows...)

There will be an anti Mittens candidate.  It will coalesce around one guy.  I won't make a prediction on who will win that struggle, but it will be intense.  The flame wars will be "fun".

Hell, I see people here on a leading conservative website misstate Romney's actual record everyday. It was pretty apparent many people didn't know much about Perry's record and frankly, still don't. But they are learning. But Romney has been effectively positioned as the northeast RINO with a touch of Mormon bashing which even goes on here so lets not pretend it doesn't exist particularly in strong conservative areas and the south. It's still early. Perry can make a comeback. But he better do it fast. A couple more weeks like this one and he's toast.

At DeMint's South Carolina non-debate thing Romney said that Obama should have called him so he could tell him what worked and what didn't with MassCare.  I'd love to hear him say what he thinks worked with MassCare, but I doubt you ever would because that might hold him to a specific position he might have to defend and indicate what a piece of shit his "Replace" portion of his Repeal and Replace plan would be.  And his Repeal part I consider to be a bullshit campaign promise as well that will be one of his first broken.  His "Everybody gets a waiver" plan is step one to modify ObamaCare so it will "work"

And that's what Romney the business man comes off as to me.  He wants to make things "work."  And so he would be a "what can the government DO" type of manager.  I don't want that.  I want a "how can we get the government out of your way" type of manager.

I'd like to hear his answer, too. I'm reasonably confident it won't the, er, curious, reply that Perry gave about calling India when Pakistan's nukes got loose but maybe not. I'm surprised that one hasn't gotten more play. That was a lot more troubling than anything else he said the other night.

I do believe him.  He started his political career in a deep blue state he had worked in for years.  It's a tenth amendment issue.  The people of Massachusetts supporterd Romneycare overwhelmingly.  If I happened to live in that state, I would not have supported itl, but I've seen little to indicate that he supports it nation-wide.

Heartless racist that I am (at least according to you-know-who), I wonder if you think Rick Perry would actually be tough on illegal immigration, or would just be a redux of George W. McGrahamnesty?

571 There was an incident in the 90's when we lost to Michigan and dumbass students decided to burn couches in the street and that was the big news like there were riots in the streets.

Burning couches in the streets?  Sheesh.  Times sure have changed.  Back in the 70s, flipping cars on High St. was the norm on Game Day Night.  I was a student supervisor for a housekeeping crew one night when two of the staff wandered in drunk an hour late.  One of them had a knot on his head the size of a golf ball.  When I asked him about it, he told me that a  double-line of Columbus cops swept High Street while armed with knee-knocker guns "and they weren't aiming at the ground, either!".  As he was from Youngstown, you can add the appropriate language for his description of the events and the heritage of Colombus' Finest.

He is the only Republican beating Obama nationally and also in states like FL where he is up by 7. Do you really think there are that many people who are going to be troubled by Romney's alleged flipping in a general when Obama "Don't raise taxes in a recession - We must raise taxes in a recession" has taken the economy into the toilet? Or are they going to look at a tremendously accomplished turnaround businessman and think that might be a pretty damn good thing to have in the Oval Office? Ain't no way Obama is going to out debate Romney. Obama is lost without his teleprompter and if you go back and look at the debates this cycle and last Romney has won or tied ever one. Posted by: chemjeff at September 24, 2011 08:47 PM (s7mIC) I don't think this is just "some" hypothetical right of the people. We are dealing with the fundamental right of Pursuit of Happiness... the right to spend your money as YOU deem best, not how the government sees fit. Let's be clear on this point: the Bill of Rights is not an exhaustive list of our rights; the constitution specifically states that simply because all rights are not listed, does not mean they do not exist. When Congress exceeds its constitutional authority... it is trampling on our rights. Government in this case if attempting to force young people that do not need insurance to buy it, to in effect subsidize insurance for older people against their will. We may quibble over the difference between mandate and tax, but at least a tax is an honest bill for a stated purpose presented to tax payers. The constitution authorizes taxation: I see nowhere where is authorizes mandates. That idiot Justice Kegan stated that government can mandate that we eat our broccoli. Was the American Revolution fought so that one day American government could mandate everything we buy, everything we eat? It's the principle of the mandate that offends. If we don't stand firm against this, like the colonists held firm against a piddling British tax on tea... we will suffer exactly what they fought to save us from.

If we don't stand firm against this, like the colonists held firm against a piddling British tax on tea... we will suffer exactly what they fought to save us from. Well not to put to fine a point on it but those weren't just any colonists, those were citizens of Massachusetts. The principle they were fighting over was no taxation without representation. It was the people of MA that came out overwhelmingly in support of the MA healthcare plan. I wasn't one of them but the majority spoke and the MA Supreme Court has upheld the mandate as permitted by the MA Constitution.

CoolCzech, I agree with every word.  But that is not the basis of the current constitutional challenge to ObamaCare.  All I'm saying is that there is no inconsistency in taking a federalist position and saying that ObamaCare is unconstitutional on a federal level but constitutional on a state level, based on the current challenges that are out there.  Now whether an individual mandate would be unconstitutional on a state level because it violated a basic right guaranteed by the Constitution is a new argument, I think, and hasn't been addressed by the courts.  But maybe our moron lawyer brigade could answer that.

657 @667: The Lone Ranger is captured by the Indians, who tie him up at the stake. Right before they are about to light the fire, Chief Squatting Dog walks up to the Ranger and says, "You have always been an alright guy; we just have to burn you on general principle. We hate to burn you like this, but will grant you one dying wish!" So the Ranger says, "Can I speak to Silver one last time?" The chief lets him, so the Ranger whistles and up trots Silver. The Ranger whispers in his ear, and off races Silver, like a lightning bolt! A short while later, a wagon full of the local town whores pulls up. Out jump the whores, and service the entire Indian village. As they depart, to the cheers of the Indians, Chief Squatting Dog walks up to the tied up Ranger, smiling. "That was Mighty White of You, Ranger! Just for that, we'll give you one more wish!" So the Ranger asks for Silver one more time. Up trots the faithful horse. The Lone Ranger grabs him by the bridle and hisses, "Posse! POSSE!!!"

So flies out as Superman, to cool off. On he flies through the night, until he is above the corn fields of Kansas. Way down below, with his supervision, he spies a naked Wonder Woman, apparently in the throws of self-induced passion. As his super hearing picks up her insistent moans, he thinks to himself, "Self... you know, with my super speed, I could nail that in a heartbeat, drain my superballs, and fly off without her having any idea who just gave her the Coupe de Pork!" So in a mere microsecond, he swoops down to pork Wonder Woman's Holy of Holies, does the nasty, and flies off home with a super smile on his face. Meanwhile, back in Kansas: Wonder Woman: What the hell was that? Invisible Man: I don't know, but man, my ass is on fire!

680 As Bachman is so fond of saying, it's going to be a long road and she doesn't plan to drop out.  I think these debates have grabbed the country's attention.  After this debate people were saying Cain should drop out.  Sure, it is politically expedient for the republicans to have a 4 man race but it may not be acceptable to the American people who like things just the way they are.  Funny, I've heard of independents registering republican to have a say in the primary.   Will be interesting to see what their impact is, if any.

Posted by: CoolCzech at September 24, 2011 05:41 PM (niZvt)

692 I'm bemused that people are trying to spin this as anything other than a disaster for Perry and a stunningly good outcome for Cain and Romney.  The triumph of hope & desire over logic, I suppose.

It's Romney's win more than Cain, really, as he managed to nearly tie Rick Perry despite not even competing in a straw poll of conservative activists.  This wasn't his crowd, and he explicitly declined to compete -- he should have lost to Perry by 20%, and that outcome wouldn't have been blinked at by the media, it would have been completely expected.  I can't emphasize this enough: Romney should have been destroyed by Perry here, and that was what every political reporter and spinmeister had been prepared to report, and moreover to report as "no big deal," unsurprising news given the people voting in this straw poll, who are congenitally averse to someone like him.  The fact that he didn't even show up and yet finished in a near-tie with Perry is...bleak.

Meanwhile Cain had a great day, but he isn't going to be the nominee, and that was a fact acknowledged by most of the people casting their votes today, according to the reporting (they wanted to give him attention for a possible V-P slot).  But Romney may well.  And incidentally, as much as it's going to pain the readers of AoSHQ to find this out, Romney & Cain are a mutual admiration society -- Cain pointed out that Romney would be his VP choice during the debate, and endorsed him last time around, and Romney & his team go out of their way to praise Cain both in public and behind the scenes.  It is a 100% guarantee that if/when Herman Cain drops out of the race, he will endorse Mitt Romney.

Me?  I guess I'm hoping for the Fat Man to get into the race at this point.  Otherwise it's Romney. Perry looks like he's Texas Toast unless he engineers a major turnaround.  I can't believe he frittered away a nomination that was basically handed to him on a silver platter.

Posted by: CoolCzech at September 24, 2011 05:42 PM (niZvt)

697 Uhhh... no, I'm not so sure of that. NO STATE can deny Bill of Rights rights. The SCOTUS has long held that liberties protected by the Constitution cannot be overridden by the states. And my objection to a state government imposing such a mandate is exactly the same as to the federal government doing it. Oppression, really, is oppression no matter WHAT level of government practices it.

Posted by: CoolCzech at September 24, 2011 08:44 PM

Nothing in the Bill of Rights prevents an insurance mandate.  The lawsuits are all about Congress exceeding its power under the constitution.  The Constitutional limitations on the powers of the Congress don't apply to the states.

The states mandate all kinds of stuff and always have, reaching way back to the constitution.

State-level healthcare insurance mandates are a bad idea, as Romneycare shows, and they are kinda oppressive in that they meddle in people's lives for no real public good, but they're not unconstitutional or violating the sacred principles of the Constitution or anything.

Posted by: The Q at September 24, 2011 05:46 PM (CJIam)

702 JeffB,

If Perry was such a lock, why was he trying so hard?  Who was his primary opponent (I honestly don't know but I had not heard it was Cain)?

If conservatives had rejected Perry to the point of wanting him to drop out, why back a candidate who does not appear to have the campaign chops to win?  This is a non-committal vote.  Why not eliminate Perry's chances for garnering support/donors by throwing in with Mitt?

I think they were signaling to Perry to up his game and they were also saying that they will not back Romney.  They didn't vote for him because they reject him, not because he didn't campaign there.

Finally, why doesn't it bother you that Romney is not acceptable to conservatives... especially when we've been told for the past couple of weeks by his supporters how he's more conservative than Perry?

708 >>>You think Romney will be able to avoid the siren songs of Rubio & Susana Martinez to pick Cain as VP?

No, I don't think he will, and moreover I don't think he should.  I think Cain would actually play poorly in a general election as the VP due to his past fuckups, both on foreign policy and especially the "no Muslims" thing.  It'll open up the whole "not yet ready to be President" can of worms that got Palin into trouble and provide a wedge that would be completely unnecessary given the availability of Rubio.  Really I can't imagine that ANY nominee would pick anyone other than Marco Rubio.  It's as no-brainer of a VP decision as any party has ever had in the past four cycles.

If Mitt Romney won the election, however, I'm 99% sure Cain would be his Secretary of Commerce or perhaps his appointment to the NLRB.  Romney will try hard to find a place for Cain in his cabinet -- as I said, they like each other A LOT.

Everyone -- EVERYONE, including me! -- wanted Perry to be the 'knight in shining armor' who would come in and take the nomination as an experienced, electable, real conservative from an important state.  That's why he instantly leaped out into frontrunner status in the race by a margin of 10-15% nationally.  That's as close to having the nomination 'gifted' to you as it comes these days.  All he had to do was play a creditable defense and not blow it by saying stupid shit and defending the chinks in his record in a slick way (look at how Romney does it!).

And he's pretty much blown it.  I mean, it's definitely not over yet, but assuming Romney doesn't implode himself (and it's unlikely given how controlled he is) he's going to have to pull a serious makeover in order to recover.

722 That's why he instantly leaped out into frontrunner status in the race by a margin of 10-15% nationally.  That's as close to having the nomination 'gifted' to you as it comes these days.

OK, that's not my definition of having a nomination handed to you. That's my definition of a popular upwelling of support from a diverse group of regular people.

My definition of having a nomination handed to you would be having the chattering classes and big money folks backing you.  I think that is really more true of Romney than of Perry, not that it matters much.

You're right that we're all probably overreacting a bit, and that it's not "over" at all yet.  There's going to be a nice long pause now until the next debate, and it'll be interesting to see how Perry repairs the damage during that period (and studies up for the next debate, hopefully).  If he comes out strong next time around, he can *definitely* restart the engines.  But the problem is, I don't know how he suddenly develops the smoothness and command over issues that has seemed like such a yawning gap in his candidacy in that timespan.  Maybe he's just been complacent, and can snap into shape.  Would really like to see it.

if your husband does thereapy (he probably should), cognitive behavioral therapy is the only kind that's been shown to work in studies.

It helped me out, a lot more than the pills did.  Pills can screw you up.  I would avoid them unless hubby is flirting with suicide.

Also, lots of sunshine has been scientifically proven to help.

Also minimum 20 minutes of cardio, at least 5 days a week.  That has also been scientifically proven to help.

I was there at the P5 and CPAC events. The Perry people WERE really pushing for a win but so were Romney's. I would say they were putting in the same effort. Huntsman's people, however, were up there with the Paul-bots in aggressive campaigning.

Cain and Santorum were EVERYWHERE. I mean the men themselves. You were able to run into them frequently and talk to them. Santorum went out of his way to show up at parties/hospitality suites. He got into the mix. You, the voter, had to go to Romney. Even Newt and Callista went walking around a bit to be seen. I didn't see Romney or Bachman for that matter at all. They also didn't turn up at Radio Row to do interviews after they spoke at CPAC whereas all the others stopped in to chat on the air. (My husband is a radio guy.)

In their final speeches Cain brought down the house and fired everyone up. He was great. Inspiring.

The RPOF was also able to keep the Paul-bots from stealing the vote. It was discovered that Paul had bussed in 10 bus-loads of supports who were trying to get other people's credentials. At one point some big guys in the RPOF were asking people to just vote Romney or Perry to deny Paul a victory but Cain's speech and Gov. Scott's admonishing to vote for the best person it went to Cain. They also had counties state their number of delegates and accounted for their votes. That helped.

Late to the thread. .....Congrats to Herman Cain! Have always liked him. ....Would have no problem voting for him if he gets the nom......but unfortunately I think this straw poll victory is one of those little flukes that happen.

Bachmann won the Iowa straw poll. And now look at where she is.

As poorly as Perry did in the debate in FL, I was prepared to see him way down in this straw poll.....not in second place.

I was expecting Romney to win this one.....since so many said they thought he won the debate. So this seems like a repudiation of Romney.

People want to hear straight talk...on the issues. Not sniping at each other.

Herman Cain has not engaged in any of the attack-dog stuff that Romney, Bachman and Santorum have been doing. ....Perry finally attempted to do some of it and failed miserably at it....plus insulting people with that "have a heart" remark made it even worse.

Still hoping Perry can rehabilitate himself. ...If he has someone coaching him on the debates, he should fire them. ....Hire some joke writers. Something. ....I just think that Perry is the one who stands the best chance of beating the SCoaMF and getting us out of this economic mess.

Y-not....sorry your going through such a rough time. Hope it gets better soon.

CoolCzech....thanks for the jokes, those were great.

I LOVE Mr Cain  ALWAYS HAVE

He is the right man for the Job. His class and poise, One think I have noticed at the debates is when some one else is speaking, Mr Cain turns to listen to that person. To me that shows Respect class and dignity for himself and others. Perhaps is a sign of my age and a loss of respect in this culter. I admire mr cain

Posted by: Coldwarrior57 at September 24, 2011 09:01 PM (nYTrG)

792 Obviously it's a big win for Cain, and could catapult him into the range of contenders just as the debates start being winnowed down.  It's a tough loss for Perry, who has had an awful performance since entering the race with all that fanfare.  The expectations were set too high, the guy never was the New Conservative Hero, he's a strong conservative and good governor but no Reagan.

It helps Romney by the damage it does to his main rival, Perry.  People can crow and mock at his third place all they like.  It's a freakin' straw poll.  Bachmann won the Iowa Straw Poll just six weeks ago yesterday and is on the verge of dropping out now.

Look at J.S. Sefton's comment about Cain.  It is almost a primmer for what was wrong with Obama.

Obama was polished, but in  what? In the main, Obama surrounded himself and filled the government with people like himself.

"He's not polished, nor is he up on foreign policy issues. But both of these can be overcome with the right people. And as all successful CEO's know, it's the people you surround yourself with that make all the difference in the world, and I think Cain would surround himself with the absolute best and brightest conservative minds around."

Hopefully, Cain would reverse the current trend.

796 Obama was on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Everyone knows he did jack shit, but he opposed the war. Foreign policy was the entirety of his campaign platform. "Bush lied, people died. Hillary voted for the war. I alone opposed it."

797 Herman Cain has not engaged in any of the attack-dog stuff that Romney, Bachman and Santorum have been doing. Bachmann had to take out Pawlenty. When she did, it went to her head. Going after Perry was stepping out of her weight class. Santorum has no business being in this race. Neither are nice people, but Iowa is their only shot. Cain will see some money from this win, and he can maybe stay in till SC.

802 "Supposedly Romney wasn't officially participation and then there were rumors his team was voting Cain to deny Perry the win."

Absolute genius - only Ace or a cob-logger could present such mathematical intuition.

1) Cain 37%

2) Perry 15%

3) Romney 14%

Tell me, Rocket Surgeon, how many points did the Romney team have to shift to Cain to deny him 1st place, and where would Romney had been if he did not shift the points?

803 deny him (being Perry) 1st place

804 Straw polls are stupid. Why even have them?

805 I am not an activist. I am a ordinary 54 yr old woman with a 4 yr business degree. On Fri. I drive alone to Orlando to the CPAC conference. I liked Cain but was not necessarily supporting him. I happened to have the opportunity to hear him talk. As I was leaving I had an Epiphany. He absolutely can win. His solutions were common sense and non political. We need a honest no nonsense electable conservative that is capable of solving the massive economic problems. One additional necessary ingredients: EXCITEMENT ENERGY ENTHUSIASM. We got it with Cain. He had seven standing ovations at the Fla. Straw poll. Did you see the euphoric faces of the delegates when his name was called? In addition he can absolutely clean Obamas clock in a debate. Google you tube for Clinton and Cain. He had ole Bills head spinning a few years back. Do not believe the establishment talking heads like rove kristol or their ilk. Never again will they tell me who the nominee will be. Cain is not an anomoly. They are going to do their best to marginal him. All I ask is do your homework. The more I did, the more I like him. If by chance you endorse him, be prepared to fight our own side. Never again will I hold my nose to vote for the political machine. I want a problem solver. No more career blow hards. Go Cain.

806 Cain is an entrepreneur, he knows marketing and sales. He knows how to sell himself. I think he could be a good president.
